When Hugh Weber was officially announced as the Seattle Sounders' new President of Business operations there was an awful lot going on. The team was deep into the process of updating their visual identity; preparing to open a new training facility that would also house the business side; and had just unveiled their new shirt sponsor Providence Health. Things have settled down a bit since then, but are getting ready to ramp back up. On Tuesday, the Sounders will unveil that new visual identity and they're now just months away from officially opening their Longacres training facility. Last week, we had a chance to meet with Weber to discuss all of these things as well as things like the Sounders' interest in exploring the possibility of building a stadium at Longacres; how their relationship with OL Reign could evolve; the status of some of the promises around the Providence sponsorship; and learned that the team is currently enjoying very robust season-ticket renewal rates while also taking a record number of deposits on new ticket packages. A limited version of the interview is available here or wherever you normally get podcasts delivered. There's also an extended version that's about 20 minutes longer that is only available to paid subscribers, which you can become for as little as $19/year.  Sponsors Full Pull Wines Watson's Counter Nos Audietis is the flagship podcast for Sounder at Heart, which became a reader-supported website on Aug. 21. Hugh Weber, President at Harris Blitzer Sports Entertainment, didn't envision himself someday running professional sports teams, but he did set out to have an impact. He was always interested in running teams and motivating people to achieve complex objectives. If you're tackling big challenges, naturally, you will experience failures. Hugh instead thinks of blunders as honing your craft and finding your authentic self. In the chat, he shares some failed moments from his early days running teams at a food industry startup. Hugh literally weathered the storm of Hurricane Katrina to help bring the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) back stronger and more successful. He draws some parallels between how the organization had to adapt to that challenge to the pandemic we are all experiencing. After rebuilding the team and making it successful, Hugh was fired. Learn why being let go was a great experience and how it led him to HBSE. Hear some failures from handling the COVID crisis in a business where gathering people together is core to what they do.

This week Brandi finishes sharing the second half of her road trip through the midwest and all of the interesting, and inspiring things she found!   Michelle’s week: This past week was the 4th of July and it was Michelle's daughter's birthday. That meant planning the birthday party, and that party was completely unicorn-themed. Including unicorn dog (Just normal corn dogs, not rainbow flavored). Lots of colors and Michelle made it through alive! So proud of her! Michelle is also very busy with work as it as they begin to film a new series. She got her introvert time by going home, cleaning a bit then, having dinner, and then watching the Bachelor. And Michelle is getting a massage before she starts another week of stress. Michelle didn't bring a song this week, but she has been listening to a lot of Billie Elish.   Brandi’s week: Brandi saw Spiderman Far from Home and she liked it a lot. Brandi is also catching up on Handmaid's Tale and she likes where they are taking the show. Brandi also found a new podcast called Bring Backup. It's a deep dive into each episode of Veronica Mars podcast and Brandi is loving it. She also had a big party for the 4th of July as it is her mother-in-law's birthday. And she is also working on getting some freelance gigs going which is a bit of a pain, but it will all be worth it in the end.  Inspiration on the road: Brandi's highlight from Chicago was the Museum of Science and Industry. It was mainly her husband Kenny's top choice, but she ended up loving it as well. She especially loved the Tesla Coil.  Also in Chicago, they rented Devvy bikes to ride around the wooden garden and Japanese Gardens.  They also stopped at a mirror maze that made Brandi feel like she had walked through the looking glass. It had colors that changed which was so fun. It also gave her a lot of inspiration for here Alice book cover that she has been working on. They also stopped at the Art Institute of Chicago. And a tip for those traveling, It's usually cheaper to visit museums if you get a yearly pass because they come with free stuff and you can visit special exhibits for free rather than paying extra. Plus, if you go back within the year you get to visit again for free! And on the last day in Chicago, they went on an architecture tour of Chicago. To Brandi, Chicago feels like the “lovechild” of New York and San Francisco. It has the big city vibes of New York and the chill vibes of San Francisco and Brandi loved it. Next stop was Sioux Falls South Dakota which is where Hugh Weber is from! Brandi and her family got to meet up with him for lunch and then a stop to see the actual Sioux Falls. Next were the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore at sunset. They stayed at the KOA in the Black Hills which is like a full resort KOA!  Next stop was Denver to visit Family and eat at Torchy’s tacos which is now in Denver. Brandi says they are better in Austin. And the last stop was camping for Father’s Day at Navajo Dam. How to Find Your Voice As a Designer – Episode 096

Design Speaks

Play Episode Listen Later May 2, 2019 45:42

This week Brandi and Michelle are taking a leaf out of Sean Wes’s book and recovering the topic of, how to hear your own voice when you are working for someone else. Brandi and Michelle encourage fellow creatives that it’s okay for you to have your own voice. It is your work and it’s okay to be in it. Michelle’s week: Michelle has had an interesting week thus far. She got to see Death Cab for Cutie live which made Brandi jealous. And Michelle is working hard at work on Easter stuff. Her daughter is on a soccer team so weekly they are at games. And she had a wild experience with her daughter the day of this recording because she and her husband were having coffee with some friends. Her daughter disappears for a minute, comes back, and when they asked where she went her response was, “I bought a burrito.” And sure enough, she had taken Kelly’s (Michelle’s husband) debit card, went to the register and bought a burrito! Brandi’s week: Brandi got a new pin this week from Two Girls Co. and it says "girls who design" and it is her new favorite pin. Brandi loves being a representative of girls being in a different sphere so that was really exciting to find. She's also working on the higher ed review portfolio for AIGA. This will be her last one as education director as she is transitioning into president very soon! And she was able to get in a good conversation with Hugh Weber this week! She has also been working with her daughter Jasmine because she is in a craft fair on Mother's Day. Jasmine has been making jewelry like crazy lately so this is an opportunity to sell and show off what she's been making. And something that has been inspiring Brandi this week is that she needs to just do things. She decided to do the 100 days challenge and she is doing something creative every day, and in order to do something creative every day, she's having to go back through inspiration folders on her phone to see what has inspired her in the past but hasn't used or posted yet.    Things to remember: Being creative is a vulnerable thing to do. Your voice matter. You are in your designs even if they are for someone else. You can’t take you out of your work. A style is different from a voice. A voice is what you have to say and a style is how you say it. You are hired for you. Your style and your voice are what make you different from all other designers Find your voice by making things. It will take time to find it, but by making things you find your voice; you find what makes you special In finding your voice, the things that you find yourself attracted to are probably part of your voice. And look for consistencies in what you do in your personal work and in the work you do for clients   Songs: Michelle’s song: What Sarah Said by Death Cab for Cutie Brandi’s song: If You Want Love by NF       This Quarter's Book: We are reading and reviewing books on the podcast every quarter!                   This week Michelle and Brandi talk about the significance of the support of those key people you have around you. We also talk a bit about our Patreon and how you can support us :) How important it is to have a support system   Whether that be a partner or friend/friends or family or even all of the above. When the people around you understand the amount of time creativity can take, and they support you, it can really make life so much easier.  Communication is key. Communicate what this will look like for you, and for the both of you. Make it clear how they can support you. Be willing to have them ask you the hard questions. To help talk you through it so that you don’t end up getting over your head or over-committing yourself. When you do get asked the hard question, receive what the other person is saying   “Have someone who asks you the hard questions and receive what they are saying.” [clear-line] Michelle’s week: Full of allergy season and work. Work has been a bit challenging on the focusing front of things,  but also fun at the same time. One day was a bust, but you can always start your goals again! Also, she got to be interviewed about the enneagram which is super exciting. [clear-line] Brandi’s Week: A pretty good week! AIGA has been approached by the mayor of Albuquerque's office to work on a possible mysterious partnership. She can't talk about the details yet. She has also been talking to Hugh Weber about some things he is working on. As far as goals go, she started setting up Jasmine's Kickstarter but realized she needs to do more research first to make sure that's the best platform to use.                     This week we get to answer a question from a listener on how to be a better typographer, and we are so excited about it!  Featured Music: Boygenius - Bite the Hand Starflyer 59 - Wake up Early [clear-line] Inspirations, Thoughts, Opinions, & Updates What We’ve Been Up To Michelle: Has limited the number of parties she’s going to this Christmas season, but is still watching many crappy Christmas movies Has been listening to girl bands on repeat And she is going to have the wrap party for the webisode series, Newclear Family, and she got to watch part of the unedited shots. Brandi: Has also been watching Christmas movies, but she didn’t cry at the end of the Christmas Chronicles which Michelle is shocked about She did watch the "The Man Who Invented Christmas", and it perfectly describes what a creative feels like when they get knocked out of their creative zone. Be listening for this topic in a future episode. *wink wink* Also watched "Into The Spiderverse" and it's an epic work of creativity--Go see it! And she also had a great conversation with Hugh Weber, but she can’t talk about it too in depth. However, Hugh will be on some future episodes! He’s a fan of is, we’re a fan of him, it’s great. Oh! And she got her hair dyed this week! It's called Oil Slick and it's basically CMYK and amazing [clear-line] Five Ways to Be a Better Typographer  Research Books (always) LogoLounge & Other Logo Books 1000 Series Book Cover Design Poster Design Books Practice Being an Active Observer of Type Type is everywhere, look at it closely In one class Brandi had to do a project where she had to crop in closely on a single letter to study typefaces. Look at individual letters, spaces between lines, really see the details. Which you can use in the real world because once you know a font when you see it in the real world you can get a sense of what something is about based on the font it had. (i.e. Netflix original shows) Become an "Art Director" Look at and critique Kerning, Type Choices, and analyze every aspect of the type Brandi also suggests to plan out your hierarchy. Hierarchy is the order you want your viewers to see your design. Study the layout, the sizes the colors. Where the letters are, even the spaces between the letters. Pretend to be an art director if that helps so you can get better at studying where everything is in your designs Practice Combining Typefaces  Once you understand typefaces you can start combining them together. Some fonts work really well together and can help you in design, but be aware that that also means some fonts don’t work well together. Know why you are combining typefaces together. Play Games! Brandi also has some font apps that she has on her phone to practice font recognition in a fun, interactive way. What the Font Brandi said Font Book but meant "The Font Game" Arial vs. Helvetica There’s a  lot more to fonts than you may think. Type has personalities just like people do.   THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK!!!! "I started listening months before I decided to launch an independent design business and binged until I caught up. Binge listener, which at the time was only about 15 episodes only. This has been so helpful as I started my own business only a few months ago. I am constantly referring new friends to this show. I appreciate that Brandi and Michelle are always responsive to their audience. I was thrilled when I sent a question on Instagram and it was answered in an episode. I am thrilled to hear that there will be book reviews in the near future. It can be overwhelming to know what to use to continue learning because there are never ending resources out there, but this will always be one of my regular listens. Keep it up ladies."  - NaoGee on iTunes

This week we were incredibly privileged to have an amazing conversation with Hugh Weber. Hugh is laser focused on bringing people together and is a passionate advocate for design. Prepare yourself for one of our all time favorite guests. Some amazing takeaways from today's conversation with Hugh Weber! The easist pathway to create change is a simple introduction of two people. Design can really only exist in community You can design the life that you want. Lok for opportunities to make connections and create community Designers are "extraordinary bridge-builders" 46:01 - Design is everywhere but people don't notice or care, much like a fish swimming in the water who isn't aware of it (see link below for David Foster Wallace" Links to stuff Hugh referenced: Article: Is the Answer to Phone Addiction a Worse Phone? OTA Compassion International David Foster Wallace "What the Hell is Water?"   Podcasts Hugh is a part of:  The Potluck Society Leading Good                     Hugh ended the episode with some amazing encouragement for Michelle and I on what we're doing here on Design Speaks and I felt it was worthy of sharing: “I listened to a number of episodes [of Design Speaks] before I came to Albuquerque… One of the things I think is worthy of celebration is that your willingness to leave this at a conversation level, to make it accessible, to leave it unpolished, is a magical stroke in both great design but also self restraint. I mean, I think that the tendency to wanna perfect things is an inherent designer trait, and I think that in this way, you’ve made design more accessible both by the partnership that the two of you have, but also the willingness to say, 'this is an open conversation, and that we’re not sure where it’s gonna go'. But we know it has the directionality of better understanding designers, and designers better understanding the world around them; and that’s worthy of celebration. So thank you for continuing to have this conversation; I know it’s meaningful to the people that are listening in, and I can tell it’s meaningful to the two of you.” THANK YOU HUGH!!!!     Find us on all forms of social media via @BrandiSea on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and you can email us any burning questions you want Brandi to answer on an episode at brandi@brandisea.com.   HUGE shoutout to Vesperteen for letting us use his genius (“Shatter in The Night”) track in every episode of Design Speaks. Who owns your favorite sports team? There are still the Jerry Joneses and MarK Cubans of the world that drive their team with cult of personality, but more and more family owned teams are being replaced by corporate ownership for financial stability. The owners of the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and Crystal Palace of the English Premier League created a new organization called Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment (or HBSE)with the goal of acquiring and growing sports franchises and venues. Owning one franchise is difficult but owning several across different sports and in different countries all over the world presents it own set of problems and opportunities. I sat down and spoke with Scott O'Neil and Hugh Weber of HBSE to find out what it's like combining sports and business.

While Montessori and Froebel share a number of common traits, in particular, their emphasis on the individual needs of each and every child, they radically differ on a wide range of issues. In this podcast, the fourth in our ongoing series, we sit down with Hugh Weber, a Montessori parent, connector, catalyst and community builder; as well as Charlotte Wood, a primary guide at Baan Dek, and a thought leader in this space. We discuss how Montessori enacted a transformation in education, and, more specifically, how her system of learning was designed to encapsulate what is traditionally conceived as the kindergarten year. The importance of Montessori Kindergarten, as the completion of a program that was carefully designed to meet the individual, developmental needs of the children, at this biologically formative period, is discussed within the broader context of fostering learning, as a whole.
