This is a very special episode as it's our 100th episode of this show! When I sat down to plan this season and saw episode 100 would fall just before Christmas, I wanted to make sure we had a really special guest. And we do. I am so excited today for this episode on the nostalgia and traditions of family at Christmas with one of my favorite people in the world, Fehrn Hesse. Otherwise known as Mama, my grandmother. She instilled in our family a love of Christmas. To sing it loud for all to hear. To watch every heart be light. To bask in the inescapable glow of making spirits bright. I love Christmas for the way it brings us together—one song, one cookie, one smile, one movie at a time. In my family, I've named myself the Chief Holiday Cheermeister—and that love of the wonder and true meaning of this season is due in large part to our family matriarch, Mama. Not only has she raised our family, Mama also taught as a professor in the nursing department at Mt. Saint Mary's for 24 years and worked for 40 years as a mother-baby nurse at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California. If you've met her, you've probably received a hug from her. She radiates love and encouragement and it's a real gift to me this season to get to talk with her here about the love of a mother at Christmas. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. WHAT'S YOUR CAUSE? I love female entrepreneurs who do it all and Dr. Kay Durairaj, aka @Beautybydrkay, is a woman who does it fearlessly. Dr. Kay is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, and board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. She is also a clinical professor at UCLA/Olive View Medical Center and Chair of the Department of ENT at Huntington Memorial Hospital. On top of her list of qualifications and achievements, she is highly respected as an artist and surgeon both inside and outside the medical community. Her natural approach to facial rejuvenation is sought after by patients from around the world. As both an artist and a surgeon, she believes in the science of beauty and wants to teach her approach to her colleagues from around the world through her Mastery of Aesthetics course. In 2018, her podcast, Beauty Bytes with Dr. Kay: Secrets of a Plastic Surgeon premiered at #2 on the iTunes Fashion & Beauty Charts (here's my episode on her show!). Dr. Kay is also a business owner, a mom, a content creator, and is considered a huge influencer in the medical and aesthetics industry. She has turned her Instagram presence into a larger brand with her own skin care line, events, speaking engagements and more coming up! I don’t care if I sound like a broken record but I’m going to keep showing these wonderful examples of professionals who show up consistently online and how it explodes their business. Industry influence is real, and now, because of the brand she’s built, Dr. Kay can take her business and personal brand in any direction she wants, which is exactly what she’s doing. In this episode, we cover a lot of ground. We talk about: how content has changed her business her content process and how she’s branded herself how she’s running (and now scaling!) her business to keep up with demand who is influencing what people want to look like influencer marketing - both working with influencers and as one herself how she can reconcile body positivity with the fact that she’s making changes to others what she tells teenagers who want work done when and how she says no to patients & more! I really wanted to have this conversation because there is still such a stigma around the aesthetics industry. And there shouldn’t be. I do not think there is anything wrong with making enhancements or improvements when it comes from a healthy place. Whether we like it or not, appearance plays a large role in perception - not only how other people see you, but also how you see yourself. It’s a topic that seems to bring up a lot of feelings of shame and judgement, and it's something most people don’t want to admit they care about or maintain. Aesthetics is a huge business and only getting bigger. And it’s also not just for celebrities - these conversations around body positivity need to be happening openly because we are watching new generations grow up in a world where altering your appearance in some way is a regular thing - whether it’s Facetune, filters, injectibles, or surgery, so please enjoy my conversation with the very talented and accomplished Dr. Kay. Listen Now A 2012 National Academy of Sciences (Institute of Medicine) study titled, "Best Care and Lower Cost," found about one quarter of all medical spending is wasted, much of this excessive spending going to pay for treatments that are of unknown effectiveness. With medical spending now accounting for one-sixth of the nation's GDP, or over $3 trillion annually, how do we limit spending to treatments that are proven effective or are of high value. How do we increase the use of evidence-based medicine. While this issue or problem has been, or is being, addressed by several federal health care agencies including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the the ACA-created Patient Centered Outcomes and Research Institute (PCORI), progress has been frustratingly slow. (For example, a day prior to this interview a Health Affairs blog post discussed the persistent use, despite clinical evidence to the contrary, of pre-cataract surgery blood analysis and EKG testing.) During this 23-minute conversation Dr. Feinman discusses how his background as a hospitalist led to his co-founding Doctor Evidence, what explains the variation in the use of evidence based medicine, how Doctor Evidence is working to improve the timely collection, dissemination and use of evidence-based medicine, how his work is related to the Cochrane Collaborative, and how work by Doctor Evidence can influence quality measurement and drive or improve health care value, or patient outcomes achieved relative to spending. Dr. Todd Feinman is the Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of Doctor Evidence where he works to create evidence technologies that will lead to improved care, better health care outcomes, greater patient satisfaction and reduced spending growth. Among other partnerships, Doctor Evidence works with the USC Center of Body Computing and with several medical associations and pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Feinman began his career as a hospitalist, developing the first such programs in Southern California. He is a board certified internist. Dr. Feinman earned his medical degree at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine and did his residency work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/gaines Last month, I hopped on an airplane and flew down to Miami, Florida, where I underwent a special type of protocol that is technically called “extracorporeal shock wave therapy,” also known as “Audio Frequency Shockwave Therapy.” Basically, although the physician on today's podcast will be able to explain the nitty-gritty science behind it, this technique uses mild acoustical waves to “shock” a male or female's genitals either A) back to life in the case of things like low libido, erectile dysfunction or small size or B) turn one into the equivalent of, pardon the expression, a sex machine with more blood flow, bigger size, better orgasms and much more. Let's just say I was pretty pleased with my own personal results, so pleased in fact, that I decided to get the doctor who oversaw my procedure onto a podcast. Whether you're a guy or a girl, if you're interested in enhancing your sex life, building new blood vessels, or fixing libido and sexual issues, this is a must listen. Dr. Richard Gaines, MD, FAARM, ABAARM, is the Chief Medical Officer at an age management medical practice company called HealthGAINS. He is a leading practitioner of the rapidly evolving science of "physician-guided age management", and has been administering bioidentical hormone therapy since 1993. After a distinguished thirty-year career as a physician and health-care executive, Dr. Gaines became president and chief medical officer of the age management medical practice HealthGAINS, which he founded in 2005. He graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1981, completed his internship at Tufts University School of Medicine and his residency at Harvard Medical School and earned a fellowship in cardiac and obstetric anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He subsequently served as a physician at Huntington Memorial Hospital and as an anesthesiologist at Harvard Community Health Plan and Sheridan Healthcorp. Hormone Replacement Therapy Dr. Gaines is a pioneer in the use of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT for both men and women. Before dedicating himself to helping men and women be healthier, happier, and more vital from their 30s to their 40s and beyond through HRT, Dr. Gaines worked as an anesthesiologist. For three decades he was a board certified anesthesiologist at some of the most well-known hospitals in the country, and he maintains that specialty to this day. Most notably related to today's podcast, Dr. Gaines is the creator of something called "Gaines Enhancement", which is one of the only drug free, surgery free male enhancement procedures that not only provides effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED), but that can also increase both the length and girth of the penis. During our discussion, you'll discover: - The shocking number of guys who take Viagra, Cialis or some other kind of ED med...[10:25] -Aside from the exorbitant cost, are there any known deleterious side effects to Viagra...21:25[] -The fascinating history of the use of sound wave therapy and pulse wave therapy in medicine...[25:45] -How this same technique can be used to significantly decrease risk of heart attack...[31:40] -Whether the GainsWave therapy is any different than a "pump" that many men use...[46:00] -The "P-shot" and "O-shot" that Dr. Gaines injects into the genitals of men and women...[50:55] -How what Dr. Gaines does is any different than a company like, say, Cenegenics does...[52:53] -And much more! Resources from this episode: - (if you want to go to Miami, Florida and have the protocol done by Dr. Gaines, simply mention this podcast or "Ben Greenfield" to save 5% off your entire protocol and any follow-up procedures you decide to get done - from P-shots to sound wave therapy and beyond.)
