Julie and Karinda are back from the NHAA Herbal Medicine Summit to tackle one of the most controversial, misunderstood topics in functional health: sunlight.Inspired by the hot-off-the-press book, In Defense of Sunlight by Rowan Jacobsen, they look past the rigid “slip, slop, slap” messaging to explore why sun avoidance might actually be driving our chronic disease epidemic. From the evolutionary biology of pale skin and blue eyes, to how your skin microbiome builds UV-resistant, cancer-fighting bacteria when exposed to natural light, this episode is a masterclass in circadian nuance.Ready to take this deeper and build your own strategic light routine? Join us for our upcoming live masterclass, Returning to Our Natural Rhythm: How to Use Sunlight and Darkness for Whole Body Health and Healing, on Thursday, July 2nd at 6:30 PM AEST. We'll show you how to assess your skin type, build a solar callus, and optimise your circadian biology from sunrise to bedtime.

The sun is our friend - it elevates our moods and provides all the Vitamin D we need. But more than 20 minutes of sun exposure a day during high UV index days will age the skin prematurely. It causes immunosuppression, wrinkles, brown splotches, and rough old skin. More importantly, skin cancers are much more common in people with excessive sun exposure. On this show, we talk about the benefits of sun exposure...and the problems UV light causes. We describe how the SPF number is obtained, everything you want to know about sunscreen.

Most parents think the key to getting kids to eat healthy food is explaining why it's healthy. Unfortunately, research suggests that strategy can backfire spectacularly. In fact, telling children a food is "good for you" may be one of the fastest ways to make them reject it. Fortunately, there is a much better approach. https://www.chicagobooth.edu/review/kids-can-have-their-cake-and-their-broccoli-too For years we've been told that sunlight is something to avoid. Stay indoors. Cover up. Wear sunscreen. And while excessive sun exposure certainly carries risks, some researchers are asking whether the conversation has become too one-sided. Could avoiding the sun come with health consequences of its own? Are we getting enough sunlight to support healthy bodies and minds? And what does the evidence actually say about sunscreen, vitamin D, skin cancer, and the benefits of spending time outdoors? Journalist Rowan Jacobsen set out to investigate these questions and found answers that surprised him. He joins me to discuss the science behind our relationship with the sun and why the story may be far more nuanced than most people realize. Rowan is author of In Defense of Sunlight: The Surprising Science of Sun Exposure (https://amzn.to/4o5QD1n). Astrology has survived for thousands of years. Millions of people know their zodiac sign, read horoscopes, and occasionally wonder whether there might be something to it. Yet astrology occupies a strange place in modern culture—widely followed, frequently mocked, and rarely examined carefully. So where did astrology come from? Why are humans so drawn to it? Why do horoscope descriptions often feel uncannily accurate? And when scientists have put astrology to the test, what have they found? Award-winning science journalist Carlos Orsi takes a thoughtful look at one of humanity's oldest belief systems and separates the psychology, history, and science from the mythology. He is author of What Science Says About Astrology (https://amzn.to/49BvzKk). Everyone "knows" that horizontal stripes make you look heavier and vertical stripes make you look slimmer. It's one of the most widely accepted fashion rules around. The funny thing is, there is surprisingly strong evidence that the rule may be completely backwards. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3485773/ Learn more about your ad choices. Today we're talking all about building a healthier relationship with the sun—without fear.I break down why I focus on gradually working up to sun exposure, prioritizing early morning and later afternoon sunlight, and paying attention to UV intensity rather than avoiding the sun altogether. We also discuss how I personally use the dminder app to monitor UV levels, estimate vitamin D production, and better understand when the sun is strongest. We also dive into my thoughts on mineral and tallow-based sunscreens for prolonged exposure, why I avoid the “burn now, deal with it later” mentality, and the nutrition strategies I focus on to support healthier, more resilient skin from the inside out.Why sunlight is important for overall healthGradually building sun tolerance over timeWhy I prioritize early morning and late afternoon sun exposureUnderstanding UV intensity and vitamin D productionHow I use the dminder app to track sun exposure and vitamin DMy thoughts on prolonged sun exposure and sunscreen useWhy I prefer mineral and tallow-based sunscreen optionsNutrition strategies to support skin resilience and reduce oxidative stressPrioritizing omega-3 rich foodsMinerals and hydrationAntioxidant-rich fruits and vegetablesAdequate protein intake for skin repairReducing highly processed seed oilsSupporting overall metabolic health and blood sugar balanceNutrients like vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, and astaxanthinThis episode is all about balance—respecting the sun, supporting the body, and moving away from both extremes of sun fear.Primally Pure Tallow Sunscreen (code drhalieschoff10)Grove Clean sunscreens code drhalieClearstem facial SPF (code drhalie) Ilia skin tint SPF serumHealthy sun supplement protocol

As the warmer weather arrives and many of us begin spending more time outdoors, conversations around sunshine, skin health, UV exposure, and nutritional resilience are once again coming into focus. In this podcast, we explore the emerging science surrounding omega oils, phospholipids, antioxidants, membrane integrity, and the growing concept of “inside-out” skin resilience.Looking beyond traditional skincare approaches alone, we examine how sunlight, oxidative stress, hydration, inflammatory balance, environmental stress, and modern lifestyle factors may all influence the health and appearance of the skin at a deeper cellular level. We also explore the fascinating relationship between omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, antioxidants such as astaxanthin, Mediterranean-style dietary patterns, and the skin's ability to adapt to periods of increased environmental stress, including sunny holidays, heat exposure, dehydration, and air travel. As more researchers investigate the connection between membrane health, lipid balance, oxidative stress, and visible skin ageing, a broader question is beginning to emerge:Could true skin resilience involve far more than simply what we apply to the surface of the skin alone?A thought-provoking exploration of modern skin health, nutritional resilience, environmental exposure, and the changing scientific conversation around supporting the skin from within.
Sun exposure isn't as simple as "eat clean and you're bulletproof." In this episode, I share how my sun exposure habits had to change after moving to a larger homestead — and why spending more time outdoors forced me to rethink everything I thought I knew. I break down why diet still matters for UV tolerance, what actually causes photo aging, how I structure my day to get sun safely, and why I rarely use sunscreen — but when I do, what I reach for. If your hair is thinning, shedding, or simply not what it used to be—and nothing seems to work—this episode is for you. Because what if the story you've been told about balding… is wrong? For decades, hair loss has felt like fate: genetic, inevitable, untouchable. But science is catching up to something deeper—something root-level. What if the real culprit behind age-related hair loss is cellular dysfunction? And what if we could change that? In this episode, Dave Asprey uncovers the cellular biology of hair thinning with longevity researcher Carolina Reis Oliveira. You'll learn how senescent cells (aka zombie cells) hijack your scalp, disrupt follicle function, and silently accelerate hair loss—and how a breakthrough peptide might stop it cold. Carolina reveals brand-new clinical research on OS-01, a molecule shown to increase hair density by 40% in just 6 months. But this isn't a product pitch—it's a paradigm shift. Together, they explore the hidden drivers of hair aging, from hormone shifts and stress cascades to microbiome imbalances and inflammation, plus the real science behind what can actually regrow hair. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How “zombie cells” (senescent cells) sabotage your hair from the inside out • The science behind the OS-01 peptide and how it reverses visible hair thinning • Why thinning hair isn't just genetic—and what else is driving it • How stress, hormones, and aging collide to trigger follicle dysfunction • What your scalp microbiome has to do with regrowth and hair density • How to stack red light, peptides, and topicals for real, measurable results ***Visit oneskin.co/DAVE and use code DAVE for and additional 15% off.*** Resources: • Dave Asprey's New Book - Heavily Meditated: https://daveasprey.com/heavily-meditated/ • OneSkin Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/oneskin.co/ • OneSkin Website: https://www.oneskin.co/ • 2025 Biohacking Conference: https://biohackingconference.com/2025 • Danger Coffee: https://dangercoffee.com • Dave Asprey's Website: https://daveasprey.com • Dave Asprey's Linktree: https://linktr.ee/daveasprey • Upgrade Collective – Join The Human Upgrade Podcast Live: https://www.ourupgradecollective.com • Own an Upgrade Labs: https://ownanupgradelabs.com • Upgrade Labs: https://upgradelabs.com • 40 Years of Zen – Neurofeedback Training for Advanced Cognitive Enhancement: https://40yearsofzen.com Timestamps: • 00:00 — Trailer • 01:52 — Intro • 02:59 — Is Aging Optional for Your Scalp? • 04:03 — Understanding Scalp and Hair Aging • 05:06 — The Role of Senescent Cells in Hair Loss • 07:25 — Hormonal Influences on Hair Health • 16:10 — Peptide Solutions for Hair Thinning • 18:05 — Clinical Studies and Results • 20:29 — Future of Hair Loss Treatments • 30:16 — Nutritional and Lifestyle Factors • 36:40 — Addressing Senescent Cells and Hair Growth • 37:29 — Minoxidil: Oral vs. Topical Use • 39:32 — Personal Experience with Hair Products • 40:25 — Combining Therapies for Hair Growth • 46:06 — Nutritional Factors in Hair Health • 52:20 — Sun Exposure and Hair Health • 56:40 — Coffee and Hair Growth • 01:00:01 — Launching the New Hair Product See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode, I discuss skin health appearance and why both are important indicators of the health status of your immune system, gut microbiome, and other organ systems. I explain why sunlight is essential for skin and hormone health and how excessive sunlight can accelerate skin aging and cause certain skin cancers. I discuss the different types of sunscreens (physical, chemical, and mineral-based) and potential health concerns of the chemicals found in some (but not all) sunscreens. I also discuss the importance of getting your skin (and not just moles) checked for pre-cancerous and cancer growths, the role of nutrition and lifestyle factors that improve skin health and appearance, and how to improve your skin by reducing local and systemic inflammation and supporting your microbiome. I explain what works to improve your skin's youthfulness and appearance, including reducing wrinkles, sagging, and pore size. I review the data on ingesting (or topically applied) collagen, vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and retinol, and what is known about the use of peptides (e.g., BPC-157, copper peptides) and red and far-red light phototherapies for improving skin health and appearance. I also discuss the causes of acne, rosacea, and psoriasis and explain nutritional, skin care, and prescription-based approaches to treating these common skin conditions. This episode ought to help everyone better understand the biology of the skin and help them make the best possible decisions for their skin health, care, and appearance according to age, goals, and current skin conditions.
