MEET OUR GUEST Huzefa Kapadia is the founder of Scalar Learning LLC, an education services company based in Los Angeles, CA. Moreover, he is a math video curriculum developer, math musician, and a private math tutor.  His life is fully devoted to the art of teaching math, and all aspects of content creation are aimed towards helping students master mathematics for both school curriculums as well as standardized tests.  Prior to launching Scalar Learning LLC, Huzefa worked as a software developer for three years before attending law school at Northwestern University. He was then employed as a patent attorney for four years at two international law firms. After working as a software engineer and patent attorney, Huzefa entered the world of math education as an homage to his true passion: teaching mathematics.  Since founding Scalar Learning LLC, Huzefa has created hundreds of hours of digital content targeting math concepts for students across elementary, middle, and high school. He has produced and released 5 video courses on mathematics, 3 of which prepare students for the math portions of competitive standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and ISEE. Additionally, he has written, recorded, and produced 17 math music videos, several of which have been featured on BuzzFeed, The Blaze, The Journal, and EdTech Digest. In this episode of the “GILTI Conscience” podcast, Skadden international tax attorney Paul Oosterhuis and associate Huzefa Mun join our hosts Nate Carden and David Farhat to discuss legislation, new regulations and the Build Back Better Act. They examine possible outcomes if the Build Back Better Act is not adopted, including changes in other tax regulations that could arise, as well as the potential impact of the “Two-Pillar Solution” on global taxation. Thehttps://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/5376 ( Build Back Better Act) has received a great deal of recent attention, but it doesn't look like we're going to see any movement on it in the near future. Many analysts therefore are focusing on what is likely to happen on the regulatory and pillars front were the bill not to pass. Paul suggests there would be a fair amount that the Treasury Department would want to consider with respect to the treatment of interest expense for U.S. multinationals. Possible changes include increased foreign tax rates, new check-the-box regulations and alterations in foreign tax credit regulations. Next, the guests discuss whether the OECD's two-pillar method will shift taxation away from standard international tax rules and bring about a global minimum level of taxation. Pillar One requires a physical presence in a country before that country can tax, and Pillar Two sets a minimum tax at a 15% rate. However, what happens if these pillars are enacted by other countries but not the U.S.? Paul and Hufeza expect that Pillar Two will not be difficult to enact in the EU, the U.K., Japan, Australia and many of the other major countries with multinationals. However, without Pillar Two, the U.S. would likely encounter problems for several years, unless major reform takes place. In addition, absent Pillar One, the U.S. is likely to face a period of chaos, unless it can “beta test” and see if a large group will adopt the pillar. Finally, the group discusses a few other statutes and regulations you should be aware of relating to the Build Back Better Act and international taxation.

Here’s an overview. * The penthouse in Cali that I purchased last year (first guests booked!) I recently stayed at my Airbnb penthouse in Cali (Colombia) for about four weeks. I haven’t listed it on Airbnb yet, as I’m waiting for a pump to be installed to improve the water pressure in the showers. However, I did get my first booking through FAR International’s client base. * My recent trip to Egypt where I looked at potential Airbnb investments Podcast listener Sofia Bak (check out her awesome Airbnb listings near LAX in Los Angeles) notified me of an opportunity near the popular beach resort of Hurghada, Egypt. There are apartments near the beach for sale for as little as $5,000. I flew over to check it out, but I didn’t decide to buy anything. * A new property management company that I’ve co-founded I recently started managing properties in the US through a new company, Innhance. I partnered with a few really good friends to offer a short term rental management solution throughout the US. It’s an ambitious plan, but I’m excited and confident we can find a solution for any property. * The new book that I’ve been working on My new book, the sequel to Get Paid For Your Pad, will come out in the spring of 2019. The content is almost done and Huzefa and I will be working on the editing and proofreading of the book in the next few months. The book will contain an updated version of GPFYP plus over 45,000 words of new content on how to find profitable short term rental properties around the world, including a detailed description of the properties I bought personally as well as 10 case studies of other investors.
