"Family" can be a loaded concept, and don't even get us started on the misnomer "traditional family!" Luckily we have two experts from the nonprofit organization  Family Equality here to talk about the hard work their organization is doing to move toward both legal and lived equality for LGBTQ+ families. In this week's episode we are chatting with Shelbi Day and Rebecca Willman.   Shelbi Day (she/her) joined Family Equality in October 2016 as Senior Policy Counsel and now works as the Chief Policy Officer. She has dedicated her career to LGBTQ+ advocacy and law. Rebecca Willman (she/her) is Chief Community Engagement and Programs Officer at Family Equality and has spent most of her adult life ensuring bodily and emotional autonomy for individuals and families. Family Equality believes that storytelling is key to helping people understand the similarities between all types of families, and both Shelbi and Rebecca have fascinating fertility journeys to share. Have you wondered what the household feels like when both women are in the midst of fertility hormones? Or how five different people can contribute to build a family tree that is more of a lush and intertwining bush? What is the difference between a family of origin and a chosen family? What are good children's books and family traditions to help children see themselves and their family as represented and rooted in the community? We came away from this conversation so impressed with both our guests and their organization. Fertility treatment options have expanded the complexity of options available for LGBTQ+ families. But these families existed long before ART, and unfortunately so did legal challenges to the rights of LGBTQ+ parents. Listen for a better understanding of both the legal need for a group like Family Equality, and for the stories that help us connect with one another.  Mention: Episode 12: Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Families with If These Ovaries Could Talk (now titled The Queer Families Podcast) Make sure to catch the short snack episode to hear all about advocacy and some of the BIG changes that took place in 2022. We had so much fun talking to Robin Hopkins (actor, comedian, writer of If These Ovaries Could Talk, podcaster, the list goes on and on). We got real about her experience creating her family and all the extra hoops she and her wife had to jump through. It was very eye-opening, but she's also hilarious, so we had so much fun! She's really good at that. Talking about heavy things in a fun way. Check out her new podcast "Well...Adjusting." LGBTQ+ rights activist and DOMA fighter, Edith Windsor is this week's #QueerHistory. After meeting and falling in love with Thea Spyer, the two married in Canada at a time when gay marriage was not legal in the United States. When Spyer passed and Windsor was left as the executor and sole beneficiary to Spyer's estate, the US government tried to tax Windsor for her earnings, not acknowledging a federal spousal deduction extended to opposite-sex couples. Windsor took this to the Supreme Court and won, which was a landmark start to same-sex rights that we all experience today. Oh-varies, do we have a special treat for you! On this episode, Ruby and Anne talk with Jaimie Kelton, who is the co-host of the famed show, If These Ovaries Could Talk, the queer families podcast. The podcast has been written up in Forbes Magazine, was a Webby Award honoree, and has a celebrity-studded following (like Amy Schumer…no big deal). When she went through her own fertility journey, Jaimie looked around and couldn't find stories like hers – of queer people building families, facing roadblocks, and experiencing the joys of parenthood. So she started If These Ovaries Could Talk to fill the gap.  In today's conversation, Ruby, Anne, and Jaimie dig into the nuances of queer parenting and fertility journeys – from trips to the clinic, to donor siblings, to decisions about where to get sperm, to insurance coverage biases. It's informative, honest, and funny, all rolled together.  In addition to podcasting, Jaimie is an actor, singer, dancer, wife, and lesbian mom to two kids. Happy Pride, all!!

Robin Hopkins and Jaimie Kelton talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about their new book “If These Ovaries Could Talk: The Things We’ve Learned About Making An LGBTQ Family.” In part one of the book Robin and Jaimie cover topics on how you make your LGBTQ family from choosing an egg donor, sperm donor or surrogate to adoption and foster care. Part two of the book covers everything from growing up with gay parents to being out as a family and from talking to your kids about their LGBTQ family to the legalese of LGBTQ families. “If These Ovaries Could Talk: The Things We’ve Learned About Making An LGBTQ Family” is an amazing and humorously in-depth journey that is equal parts funny, serious, happy, sad, celebratory, cautionary and powerful. You’ll learn a lot and laugh even more along the way. Robin and Jaimie met at a Pride Family Picnic with their wives and kids in tow. That’s when then-pregnant Jaimie pitched Robin the idea to make a podcast about LGBTQ families. From doing their award-winning podcast “If These Ovaries Could Talk” they realized the world needed to know there was more than one way to make an LGBTQ family. The book is based on dozens of interviews full of insights and stories addressing recurring questions that came up during their podcast. Robin and Jaimie share their separate personal fertility journeys and their parenting adventures as the book shines a spotlight on all the different ways nontraditional families are made. We talked to Robin and Jaimie about their inspiration for writing “If These Ovaries Could Talk: The Things We’ve Learned About Making An LGBTQ Family” and their spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Robin Hopkins is an award-winning actor, writer, producer and podcast host. She began her career as a stand-up comic in New York City performing regularly at Caroline’s, Comic Strip Live, Gotham Comedy Club and Stand-Up New York. Her acting credits include Boardwalk Empire, Louie, Hindsight and Mi America. Jaimie Kelton is an award-winning actor, voiceover artist, producer and podcast host based in New York City. She has over 17 years of experience performing on stages in New York City, in Regional Theaters and on National Tours. Her voice can also be heard in Disney’s hit cartoon, The Octonauts (Tweak, Pinto, Twinkle the Sea Star), Amazon’s Bug Diaries (Scarlet Lily Beetle, Ant Leader) and Fairy Tale Forest (Gaby). Their mission with “If These Ovaries Could Talk” is to normalize, elevate and celebrate LGBTQ families confirming they’re just like other families. Robin Hopkins is in the middle of a big life transition. She’s been a producer for Spotify’s "Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith" podcast since 2016. Now in it’s 4th season, the show features Amy and her hilarious comic friends Rachel Feinstein (whom I adore and met thanks to the Women in Comedy doc I’ve been producing!), Bridget Everett, and Keith Robinson dish about their lives, pop culture, politics, and stand-up comedy. Alas. Her time at Spotify is coming to an end this year. You see, she just did something incredible. With the help of knee pads (aka an investor), she managed to let go of the guard rails and leap towards her dream of focusing on IF THESE OVARIES COULD TALK, a podcast she co-hosts with Jaimie Kelton where two lesbians chat about how to make babies and non-traditional families. An artist at heart, Robin stumbled her way into producing when she realized realized she had the skills to also be meticulously organized, juggle multiple balls while keeping 47 tabs open, and truly, make something out of nothing. Producers are sort of magical, mystical creatures. Some part of you has to believe the impossible is possible to pursue any shade of producing. In this chat, Robin explains the career trajectory of an in house producer, which she equates to the show runner role in traditional network television. And what it means to lead by example by chasing after her dreams. Can't wait to hear what you think of the episode!

Jaimie Kelton was having fertility issues so she turned to the internet for support, but to her surprise, she didn't find any. Instead of curling into a ball, Jaimie decided to create her own platform where lesbians could speak about making babies and the subsequent difficulties of maintaining non-traditional families. When she was introduced to Robin Hopkins, she knew that Robin was the one to help her establish and create a community of lesbians with non-traditional families. And thus If These Ovaries Could Talk was born (well after hundreds of spreadsheets, meetings, contacts, etc.).The intention behind If These Ovaries Could Talk is to always learn and highlight and show the love that's in our community. They have not only achieved that goal, but surpassed it on their funny yet poignant podcast show. Take a peek into the journeys of Jaimie and Robin and their podcast If These Ovaries Could Talk. Grier and her wife Alana created their family through surrogacy after fertility treatments wreaked havoc on Grier's mental health and it became clear that carrying a child in either one of their wombs was not an option. She discusses the challenges and shame that can come with not being able to conceive and the importance of breaking down taboos surrounding different ways of creating a family. The conversation also touches on the non-biological connection in queer families, the decision to use an anonymous sperm donor, and the complexities of navigating societal expectations and assumptions. This conversation emphasizes the importance of normalizing different paths to parenthood and supporting individuals in making the best choices for their own well-being.
