About Lisa Vasquez Lisa Vasquez, (known by her readers and fans as the Unsaintly Queen) creates vivid, twisted horror with the precision of a scalpel, and cuts into the reader's psyche with fleshed out characters. This month at Books & Brews, with Michael on sabbatical, Laura and Dr. Chris Powell visit Hoops Brewery in Duluth, MN. We talked with Bjorn Erickson, one of the brewers about brewing...and books. Bjorn had a great story about how he got from earning a degree in German to brewing beer. We talked about the blending of science and artistry, the hard parts of being a brewer, and the reasons Bjorn loves his job, and the numerous books and genres Bjorn reads. If you're in Duluth, we highly recommend stopping at Hoops Brewery, a family friendly place with lots of games for families and kids. You can bring your own food or get pretzels from Hoops with lots of great sauces. Jason Wuerfel may have both played on and owned minor league baseball teams, but his brewery and taproom - Books & Brews - is in a league of its own. Before classic brews like the Clifford were created, you could find him behind home plate competing with the top names in baseball. My guest for The Happy Hour # 201 is Priscilla Shirer. Priscilla is a wife, mom, and Bible teacher. She and her husband, Jerry, lead Going Beyond Ministries through which they provide spiritual support and resources to the body of Christ. They count it as their greatest privilege to serve every denomination and culture across the spectrum of the church. Friends, Priscilla is a joy to talk to and you are going to love hearing her speak about her ministry, her family, and how God has led her down paths she never would have imagined (such as how she flat out said No! the first time she was asked to be in a movie!) We start out the show talking about family and ministry - you guys have heard Chrystal and Wynter on the Happy Hour before, and it's awesome hearing how they do life together and support each other. Priscilla and I talk about trying to teach our kids the importance of those daily tasks we all need to do (i.e. cleaning, cooking!) and being ok when maybe it's not quite how we would have done it - the struggle is real! Priscilla then shares how she started writing The Prince Warriors series - can you imagine if your 4 year old came up to you and asked, "Mom, will I be in a battle one day?" This is what happened to Priscilla and you are going to love hearing what happened from that question. In the last part of the show Priscilla shares how she came to act in movies. I think we can all relate to feeling afraid, intimidated, and unequipped to succeed. Function Brewing is officially open in Bloomington as of today. Starting at 3pm they’ll be serving up 9 beers and 12 sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts. I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak on Sunday, and talk with owner/brewer Steve Llewellyn. The microphones were on and I’ll be releasing another special episode with him in a couple days. In the mean time, you can always check out our interview from last week featuring the guys from Daredevil Brewing Company. That’s out on our web site or iTunes. Tin Man Brewing cans are available now in Indianapolis at the Bottle Shoppe at 49th and College, Big Red Liquors in Broad Ripple and at A-1 Liquors on 52nd St. and at Shoefly Public House on E. 22nd St. Books & Brews has named former Warbird Brewing Company Head Brewer Brent McGill as the first to take on the same title at Books & Brews. McGill, who holds a Masters Degree in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of Michigan, has previously spent time at Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Mad Anthony’s Brewery in Fort Wayne.
