Today, we sit down with Lily Meschi, the director of partner relations at Iran Alive Ministries, to hear her testimony of coming to Christ after growing up Muslim and surviving an abusive, arranged marriage. She shares with us her story of how she came to Christ in the midst of that abusive marriage after a family friend shared the gospel with her. She tells us about what it's like to grow up Muslim in Iran in the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution and how women suffer under the oppressive regime. Despite everything standing in its way, Christianity is on the rise in Iran as more and more people grow disillusioned with Islam, and Lily tells us how Iran Alive is spreading the gospel to the people of Iran and giving them hope. Following Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran became the world's only country to be governed by an Islamic theocracy. Today, many of those living under the Islamic regime are filled with despair. Yet, their disillusionment has opened new doors for the Gospel, which is sweeping across the nation via satellite TV, the Internet, as well as a growing number of house church movements. Even so, the government continues its attempts to thwart the spread of Christianity by persecuting the nation's followers of Jesus. Many Iranians are also coming into a relationship with Christ after leaving the country and moving abroad, where they are passionate about seeing fellow Iranians – both inside and outside of the nation – come to faith in Jesus. One such person is Shah Ahmadi [SM1] of Iran Alive Ministries, a U.S.-based organization and trusted ministry partner of Voice of the Martyrs Canada. In this episode of Closer to the Fire, host Greg Musselman sits down with Shah at the Iran Alive headquarters in Texas. If you're looking for inspiration that God has a plan and that you can do hard things, then this interview is for you. Enduring painful hardships as an Iranian woman, Lily Meschi found Christ and freedom from her arranged marriage. As a single mother, she worked up the ranks in her career finding herself successful and established. Then God called her to ministry with Iran Alive to help women find freedom in Christ as she did. In this interview with Lily, you'll hear about: Finding Jesus as a Muslim A Beautiful Redemption Story What to do when you're called to do something that you don't want to do Knowing when God is calling you and walking in obedience Iran Alive and their amazing impact on the Iranian people I hope you're encouraged by this episode and that you continue shifting your mindset toward Jesus so you can do all that He is calling you to do. More About Lily With a passion “to live life on purpose,” Lily Meschi serves in ministry for Iran Alive as the Director of Partners Relations. Through her own experiences as an Iranian Woman, Lily offers profound insight into the current protests in Iran for women's rights. Lily was born and raised in a Muslim family in Tehran, Iran. At the age of 18, her family moved to the U.S. Through a chain of painful hardships relating to her rights as an Iranian woman, Lily came to discover Christianity. In her freedom found in her own testimony, she has developed a heart for Iranian women who, like herself, have undergone similar oppression and loneliness. Lily often speaks on the corrupt practices of arranged marriages of young women to older men in the Middle East, amongst other norms in their societies. She takes pride in working at Iran Alive Ministries, where she is able to speak about cultural dispositions such as arranged marriages and the strong grip of abusive male domination in the culture. A few relevant points on the women issues in Iran: The Islamic regime lowered the age of marriage for women from 18 to 13 in 1979 and then again to 9 in 1982 A married woman cannot leave the country without her husband's permission. Women are not allowed to watch men play sports at stadiums. A man can marry up to four women at one time, but women can only marry one husband. A woman needs a male guardian's consent to marry Muslim women cannot marry non-Muslim men, but Muslim men can marry Jews, Christians, or Zoroastrians Women can only get a divorce in a court while a man can get a divorce simply by declaring it verbally and not even necessarily in their presence. The Islamic republic mandated wearing a head covering- hijab in public. Violators face punishments that include up to two months in prison, fines up to 5 Million Rialss, and up to 74 lashes. The nation is called The Islamic Republic of Iran, but a recent study shows less than a third of Iranians still believe in Islam! Iranians are looking elsewhere to find answers to their spiritual questions. Dr. Hormoz Shariat tells us why, sharing from his own experiences ministering to people in Iran, evangelizing and answering their questions. “More and more I see people of Iran say, ‘To have a future for Iran, we have to get rid of Islam,'” Hormoz explains. Hormoz is the president of Iran Alive Ministries and the author of Iran's Great Awakening. He has broadcast the gospel into Iran via satellite television for 23 years. Iran has been led by Islamic clergy for more than forty years, imposing Islamic laws that control every area of life. The last few years, the numbers of Iranians finding salvation through Jesus have surged. Iran's people desire change. They find Christian TV programs or online information, see changed lives and actions among Christian friends or hear the gospel in another way. Recently the battle in Iran has been over women's head coverings following the death of Mahsa Amini. But Hormoz says the real issue is much deeper than clothing choices. As protestors on the streets of Iran chanted, “Women! Life! Freedom!” Dr. Hormoz broadcasts a series of sermons showing how Christ valued women, how He came to bring eternal life, and how true freedom is found only in Him. Hormoz encourages Iranians that if they want their nation to be transformed, individual people must be willing to be transformed first. Listen as Hormoz shares how our Christian brothers and sisters are being salt and light even amidst recent protests. “The greatest weapon we have against Islam is love,” he says. Hormoz shares testimonies from Iranians transformed by the gospel message, including one family reached through their son, who didn't say a word but became a different person after finding Christ. “I didn't get in television to be famous, to be admired. I wanted to love people and have influence in their lives and by God's grace, He has given me that.”

Today's episode is a bit of a follow up to our recent episode featuring Dr. Hormoz Shariat of Iran Alive ministries. It features Lily Meschi, the Director of Partner Relations with Iran Alive. Like virtually all Iranians, Lily grew up in a fundamentalist Muslim home, being taught that God is "always angry" with humanity, and that we should fear Him. Not in a positive way that we in the West may think of fearing God, but perpetual fear that God would judge, convict and execute for committing sins. After entering an arranged marriage, which eventually ended badly, Lily relied on the truth of the Scriptures to endure through years of abuse, isolation and uncertainty. Our guest on today's episode has been called the "Billy Graham of Iran" by Joel Rosenberg. Dr. Hormoz Shariat grew up in a Muslim household in Iran, and found himself wondering "what does all this mean?" They recited the prayers day after day, yet there was no inward stirring. Hormoz got a bitter taste of what the Islamic religion is capable of by a government that embraces it as its official religion when his brother was murdered by the regime two years after being jailed for what would be regarded as a misdemeanor crime in America.Rather than despising his brother's murderers, Hormoz used the power of his faith in Jesus to minister to his fellow Iranians through live broadcasts on the state-sponsored television stations. This interview will inspire you to take action in the face of overwhelming evil - and to acknowledge the true source of evil in this world, showing mercy toward those who are misled into doing Satan's deeds. We invite you to scroll down a bit and see how you can get a copy of Hormoz' book Iran's Great Awakening, and receive text updates on what is going on with the Iran Alive ministries! In this interview with Hormoz, you'll learn:-Family life in Iran, and finding Jesus in an Islamic culture...06:10-The moment Hormoz found Jesus through "researching" Jesus...08:30-A janitor at Hormoz' wife's work leads both of them to Jesus, and saves their marriage...13:30-So many Muslims are indifferent to religion in general - but is a vibrant spiritual life...15:21-Hormoz answers the call to minister to Muslims...18:45-Why Hormoz loves Muslims, in spite of atrocities committed by the Islamic government of Iran...21:10-The "logical" reason Muslims are so resistant to Christianity...25:45-Incredible conversion stories and miracles witnessed in person by Dr. Hormoz...31:30-How Iran Alive is utilizing artificial intelligence as a ministry tool...42:16-How you can pray for Iran and Iran Alive Ministries...45:45-And much more...Resources mentioned:Iran Alive MinistriesText the word "Iran" to 85789 to opt-in to text updates from Iran AliveIran's Great Awakening, by Dr. Hormoz Shariat (Get a copy for free when you make a contribution to Iran Alive)About our guest:Dr. Hormoz Shariat is the founder of Iran Alive Ministries, which utilizes satellite TV to broadcast Christian programming to a potential audience of 130 million in Iran and the Middle East. Dr. Shariat has been called “the Billy Graham of Iran,” by best-selling American Israeli author, Joel Rosenberg.Iran Alive uses modern technology to share the Gospel, train believers and fuel a discipleship-making movement. Dr. Shariat's ministry broadcasts life-giving messages 24/7 to some of the darkest regions of the world, spreading the gospel of Christ to oppressed Islamic-run Iran. Where it is illegal to gather for a Christian church service, the 24/7 broadcast steps in, connecting and discipling the underground Church. Dr. Shariat has an audience of an estimated 6 million daily viewers (and 20 million weekly viewers) of his satellite program in Iran. With call centers, their 4:12 training school, college discipleship, Bible smuggling, and more — the ministry supports the movement of God in Iran. Iran's population is about 84 million people and only about 2 million people identify as Christians. The church in Iran is one of the most persecuted in the world due to severe governmental restrictions on practicing Christianity. No church gatherings are permitted in...

Dr. Hormoz Shariat, president of Iran Alive Ministries, has lived through this experience. His brother was killed in Iran years ago for a minor political charge, sparking his lifelong mission of advocating for the suppressed families in Iran. Nowadays, Dr. Shariat has been called “the Billy Graham of Iran” by some and is an authority on advocating for the human rights of women, Christians and other oppressed people throughout Iran. Today on Connections, Dr. Shariat shares how he came to know Christ. He also shares his personal view on the growing turmoil in Iran and how he is using his ministry to bring others to Jesus. Muslims around the world are commemorating the holiest month on the Islamic calendar: Ramadan. Muslims fast from sunup to sundown as a way to dedicate themselves to Allah and earn his approval. It is a strategic time for Christians to pray fervently for the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus and the truth of the gospel during Muslims' heightened spiritual interest. Listen as guests explain the significance of Ramadan, then lead in praying for Muslims to encounter Christ during this month. They will also help listeners pray for persecuted Christians serving amongst Muslims. Our guests, who work in Muslim nations and among Muslims, will provide specific ways we can pray during this Ramadan month and especially the “Night of Power.” Set a reminder to pray each day during this pivotal time for the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to Muslims during Ramadan--through dreams and visions, a Christian friend, a Bible, gospel broadcast, social media post or in some other way. Lily Meschi, who serves as Director of Partners Relations for Iran Alive Ministries, provided insight into the plight of women not only in Iran, but also in Afghanistan, which certainly gained attention during the U.S. military exit from that nation. The ministry website is iranalive.org.
Lily Meschi was born and raised in a Muslim family in Tehran, Iran. When she was 16, her parents decided to migrate to Europe to escape their bankrupt business. As a teenager, moving from Iran to Germany was a total culture shock. Learning a new language, adopting an unfamiliar lifestyle, making friends, and trying to fit in the German crowds caused an enormous amount of insecurity for her. She felt inferior to the other German kids and struggled with the fact that she was just another foreigner in school. At age 18, she was introduced to a man that was 12 years older than she was over the phone. This man was helping her dad open his own restaurant in Texas. Because her dad was new to this country, and this man was a semi successful Iranian man, they had made a friendship with one another. Three months after she moved to the US, she was married to this man. Life became very sour and bitter the moment she met him in person, but he believed a marriage was promised to him. It was a daily struggle to deal with his jealousy, insecurity, verbal, emotional, and at times even physical abuse. About a year into the marriage, her family and her then husband sued each other due to some business disagreements. She found herself caught between her family and her husband. She was embarrassed and hurt, and fell into a deep depression. One day, her mom contacted her to go visit some of their friends. Against the lawyer's advice not to visit her parents, she went to their house. For the first time, she watched a movie and learned about Jesus' life. These friends had brought with them copies of the Bible, Christian movies, and other things to share the Gospel with them. After she watched the movie to the end, one of their guests asked her if she could share a part of the Scripture with her. She opened up the Word to John 1:1 and 1:14. As she was reading the verses, tears were rolling down her cheeks and without her asking me to, Lily said, “Jesus is my Lord and Savior!” She was overjoyed! So was Lily! This was in 2001. Lily joined a Bible-based church and Bible study groups. Her marital problems kept growing as the man she was married to was dealing with a great amount of fear, insecurities, mental issues, and superstitions. You can hear the remainder of her powerful story in this episode. Find our more about Iran Alive Ministries here - https://iranaliveministries.org/

DR HORMOZ SHARIAT, Founder of Iran Alive Ministries and known as “The Billy Graham of Iran” is releasing his new debut book IRAN’S GREAT AWAKENING: How God Is Using a Muslim Convert to Spark Revival. Hormoz makes the bold claim - Iran will be the first Muslim nation to turn to Christ! Dr. Hormoz Shariat was born into a Muslim family in Iran and came to the US after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. He came to Christ while earning his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence at USC in 1980. In 1987, he planted a church in San Jose, CA. With hundreds of Muslim converts, it still remains one of the largest churches of its kind in the US.In 2001, Dr. Shariat followed the Lord’s leading and founded Iran Alive Ministries, which utilizes Satellite TV to reach the millions of lost and broken people in Iran and the rest of the Middle East. Today, we broadcast the Gospel 24/7 from our studio in Dallas to Iran and the Middle East, trusting the Lord to use us to transform a nation, which is responding to the Gospel unlike any other time in history. His passion for Muslims stems in part because of the murder of his brother, Hamraz, who was arrested in Iran at the young age of 16 on a minor political charge. After 2 years in jail, he was executed by firing squad. God showed me the best way to respond to this tragedy was to dedicate my life to loving Muslims and sharing the Gospel with as many of them as possible.Dr. Shariat is also passionate about serving Americans by providing inside information about Iran and how it impacts the US. This is information you will not hear in the mainstream media! He strives to help us make sense of current events in the Middle East from both a Christian and a former Muslim perspective. He endeavors to help us understand Islam and the reasons behind the actions of Muslims in Iran. By pairing his own experience with stories and testimonies from Persians who are currently living in Iran, Dr. Shariat will encourage, inspire, and surprise listeners with information about the Iran you may not know existed.https://iranaliveministries.org/https://hormozshariat.com/ or Text IRAN to 74784

Dr. Hormoz Shariat, the founder and president of Iran Alive Ministries, and his wife Donnell are back with us this week to finish our conversation about how God called them to share the gospel with 1,000,000 Iranians—a calling that grew out of a family tragedy and great loss. Hormoz will tell us he’s not a “natural” evangelist—he calls himself a shy nerd—but says God has given him strength and boldness to share the gospel. Listen as he describes getting laid off from his job and voted out by his church as blessings that unlocked the doorway to greater seasons of ministry. Hormoz will also share current needs of the church in Iran, equipping listeners to pray specifically for that country and for our brothers and sisters there.
Dr. Hormoz Shariat was among thousands of Iranian Muslims marching in the streets of Tehran during the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Today, he’s “The Billy Graham of Iran” with a vision to reach one million Iranians for Jesus Christ. He tried Islam, but says it didn’t work to meet the needs of his heart and life. Hormoz’s wife, Donnell, was born in America, yet she too was marching in those streets after moving to Iran — and converting to Islam — to marry Hormoz. Today Hormoz leads Iran Alive Ministries, one of VOM’s partners in spreading the gospel to the people of Iran. Listen as Hormoz and Donnell tell the story of how God changed their hearts—and saved their marriage—through the love of Jesus and the faithful witness of His followers. Hormoz’s new book, Iran’s Great Awakening: How God is Using a Muslim Convert to Spark Revival, releases this week.

Dr. Hormoz was born in Iran to a Muslim family but had the ability to come to the U.S. after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. He became a Christian while getting his Ph.D. in Computer Science at USC in 1980. His passion to reach Muslims is partially fueled by the murder of his brother by the Iranian government. Instead of seeking vengeance, God showed Dr. Hormoz that the best retaliation is to dedicate his life to loving Muslims and sharing the Gospel with them. Dr. Hormoz now leads Iran Alive Ministries, where six million Iranian households are reached each week with a message of the saving power of Jesus.

What questions would you expect from a Christian suffering in prison for their faith? When Dr. Hormoz Shariat from Iran Alive Ministries received a call from an imprisoned church leader in Iran, he expected hard questions about suffering and why God would allow it. Instead, the Iranian man simply encouraged Hormoz. Imprisonment, and even torture, were an honor, this brother said, because he was suffering for Christ. Persecution of Christians in Iran—especially converts from Islam—is different from other places. In most Islamic nations, persecution starts with the convert’s own family. But in Iran, Pastor Hormoz says, most people—including Muslims—have a favorable view of Christianity, and don’t take offense at family members following Christ. Persecution in Iran is real, though, coming from the Islamic government that knows it has lost the hearts of the people—and is turning to violence to maintain power and control. Listen and be encouraged by how the church in Iran is growing, with specific stories of Iranians who have left Islam behind to follow Jesus Christ. The challenge now, Hormoz tells us, is not evangelism. The challenge is to disciple the many new Christians in Iran and help them mature in their faith. He will share how Iran Alive is creating resources specifically for the Persian church. Finally, Hormoz will help us pray specifically for Christians inside Iran—and for government leaders as well.
