Ailsa Macdonald is no stranger to endurance sports. She began competing in Triathlons in her early 20s and went on to win the Canadian National Ironman in 2018 and Ironman Santa Rosa 2019. Before that, she tried her hand at ultra running and in 2017 she won both the Canadian National 50k race and was the first winner overall at the Canadian National 100 miler at Sinister 7. Her road to Western States started when she won the Black Canyon 100k beating Courtney Dauwalter to earn her a Golden Ticket in 2018. Things didn't go to plan at WS100 2018 so she earned her second Golden Ticket with a win at Bandera 100k in 2020 and winning Tarewara 2020. Now she waits to cash in that Golden Ticket for WS100 2022. From 2013-2019, Chris served as Executive Chairman and President of the Association of Tennis Professionals. As the head of the ATP, Chris was responsible for promoting global tennis to the next generation of fans and attracting new audiences with innovative broadcasts and formats. Charles Adamo, Executive Chairman of the PTO commented, “We are very fortunate to have Chris come on board as Vice Chairman of the PTO. From his start as a professional player, Chris has experienced the formation of the ATP Tour in 1988, when tennis professionals sought to have a greater say in the growth and direction of their sport--the position professional triathlon finds itself in today. Chris rose to lead the ATP and helped fuel unprecedented growth in prize money and revenues in professional tennis. We are privileged he has agreed to devote his talents and experience to triathlon and the PTO." IRONMAN Chattanooga 70.3 has been cancelled. Sam Long IG Post Thursday - IM & 70.3 Chattanooga got canceled. While I was partly expecting it and it's the right call that doesn't mean it doesn't suck on an individual level. I know a lot of us have dealt with races being cancelled. This is how I feel: I feel like a great opportunity and something I was absolutely looking forward to has been stolen. I feel like I've let my hopes up only to let them get torn down over & over. I woke up and just wanted to give up... BUT THEN I slapped my sorry a$$ into gear and realized it's not the end of the world: We can still enjoy our training, work on fitness goals, and importantly, find fun and community with the individuals in our sport. We can become greater through the hardship. It's ok to have crap days but remember the words of Rocky "It ain't about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." What's New in the 303: Sam Long Registered for BRAC Invites Triathletes to State Time Trial Championships The Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (BRAC) is inviting Triathletes, multisport athletes, and unlicensed cyclists to attend the State Time Trial Championships in Keenesburg, CO on Saturday, July 18th. Depending on age and ability level, there are races of 10, 20, or 40 Km. Riders start at 1-minute intervals and race the “race of truth.” All care is being taken to follow the Public Health Orders for social distancing at outdoor events. The EPIC MINI Triathlon It's on. The first tri of the season. Corporate Fitness Challenge with Virgin Pulse This past Monday our company started our Corporate Fitness Competition. Teams of 5 register on this website to compete against teams of 5 throughout the company. There are 91 teams. The winning team is the one with the most cumulative steps over 6 weeks. You simply link your device to the app. The app uses your iphone steps or your device steps, whichever is higher each day. You can also add activities like swimming, biking, or nearly any activity. They have a conversion that takes how many minutes and the intensity of an activity and converts it to steps. For example, 1 minute of Body Building translates to 118 steps. Cycling for 1 minute at 10-13 mph is 157 steps. Cycling for 1 minute at 20+mph is 315 step. A 10 mile run is about 17K steps. The have a cap of 30K per day. So the most a team can get each day is 150K/day. I've done 30K per day for 4 days. I have to keep this up for 5 1/2 more weeks. By our nature as endurance athletes, we are innately skilled at pushing through. I believe many will agree that backing off is where the real challenge is faced and never more so than on race day. After all the months and hours of preparation, there is an undeniable investment in finishing what we start. The countless moments when we lace up our shoes when everything in our mind and body screams, "Netflix!". The sacrifices, the sleep deprivation, the highs, and the lows. We are endurance athletes; we do it anyway. We show up and damn it; we push through. Telsys Tarallo did the work leading up to Ironman Arizona, even though she had a deep knowing that something was missing. She showed up on race day with her physical preparation in the barn, but there was a noticeable absence of fire. The very same quality she was fighting to retrieve in her training. Never the less, Telsys toed the lined and jumped in the cold waters of Tempe Town Lake just a few Sundays ago. She completed the swim and headed out on the bike where at mile-75, she called it a day — her first DNF. A hard reality to swallow, but what was even more troubling for Telsys was that she couldn't find her "fight". We caught up with this amazing triathlete the morning after Ironman Arizona, and it was clear that she felt peaceful with her decision. She was living in gratitude for everything she accomplished along the way. Telsys is a beacon of light; she leans towards to positive side of life and is always open to the lessons of life. Despite not finishing her third Ironman triathlon, she has no plans of quitting anytime soon. Telsys is a mom, triathlete, actor, entrepreneur, and yogi. She's been a YTP fan for years. She admits to drinking the same Koolaid as Coach BJ and I. We were grateful to meet her in person at Ironman Santa Rosa in 2018 and excited to introduce her deeper into the YT community with this episode. Thank you for your support of the show, we think you're going to enjoy this conversation with a woman we consider to be, a true YogiTriathlete. Namaste - Jess

I am grateful for the change to talk with Matt about his race at Santa Rosa this year. The way he deals with adversity during the race and the “Don’t Panic” attitude is something I personally made note. We talk about his new book, Life is a Marathon: A Memoir of Love and Endurance. Something most folks don’t know about Matt is that he is always learning from himself and he loves testing himself for others to see. I’ve been following Matt’s blog for a while now and I believe we could all learn something just by following him. Sebastian is a Marine Corps veteran who served in the "Old Corps" during the 1990's and calls Santa Rosa home. It's fitting that he chose this as his first full Ironman. Both Mike and Sebastian go over the training and race day, including what went according to plan and the inevitable moments where one needs to improvise, adapt, and overcome. Episode 158 coming to you live from Healdsburg Running Company. I love everything about this episode, the environment, Skip's energy and the subject matter which is basically, enjoy what you do in this life. Following suit to family tradition, after many years in the internet start-up world, Skip and his wife, Holly moved up to Healdsburg full-time and opened the town's first dedicated running store. A community first business model has allowed for many folks, near and far to get into the running community and adopt an active lifestyle. To know Skip and his team at HRC is to know that they are the most inclusive, funny and up for anything type of crew. "Couch to whatever" is one of their main mottos. We caught up with Skip the day after his annual Ironman showcase in Santa Rosa. He completed the race on a borrowed bike and 365 days out from his last training ride. Certainly not recommended but Skip is no rookie to endurance sports. He makes a habit of running at least a few 100-mile runs per year on top of other epic adventures like his upcoming Grand Canyon trip and of course, Ironman Santa Rosa. He is the race director of the Lake Sonoma 50 endurance run and he tells the story of how the great John Medinger asked him to take over. We hope you guys enjoy our chat with Skip and I can assure you, he's just as enjoyable to be with as he sounds. Namaste -Jess

Today we recap two very different races from two very driven athletes. Mary Knott, YTP veteran, is two weeks out from the SCAR Swim Challenge, a 4-day endurance swim totaling over 40-miles, while Coach BJ is less than 24-hours out from his Ironman Santa Rosa finish. These two share generously as they answer listener questions on fueling, training, race strategy and the all-important, mental game. Both BJ and Mary are dedicated meditators in search of racing and living their highest and best through endurance sports. Both long-time athletes and coaches, their wisdom runs deep so take notes and act on the inspiration that you receive from these two great stewards of sport. Thank you so much for tuning in and supporting the show. The YTP would be nothing without its community and for that, we are in deep thanks. Namaste -Jess

Captain Stephanie Lincoln spent 10 years in the US Army before transitioning out and starting her career in nutrition and fitness. Fire Team Whiskey came about after Steph saw how many soldiers were overweight and afflicted with so many health conditions like high blood pressure, injuries, etc. This trend isn't unique to the Army ( as much as we Marines would like to believe). All branches of the military have gotten fatter, following the trend of the US population in general. When Stephanie saw this happening to active duty military she sounded off with a resounding "Hell no!" and optimized her own fitness and nutrition before founding Fire Team Whiskey, an app-based personal fitness and nutrition service geared to help active duty and military veterans take charge of their health with a ketogenic approach to eating. I am taking the plunge into a high-fat eating template to get my body fat-adapted. Steph will be coming on the show each month to go over my progress with adapting a ketogenic nutrition approach as I am training up for Ironman Santa Rosa in May of 2019. In this episode we also cover eating disorders, specifically my own struggle with binge eating and purging. This encompasses both nutrition and mental health, which Stephanie points out is important to address with a mental health professional. Amy Javens spoke to us about her win at IM Santa Rosa 2018 (though she earned her Kona slot at IM Cabo 2017). Two things stand out from this worthwhile interview: 1) the support network, her "village", that makes it all possible. 2) How she trains to those mental moments when stuff just doesn't go well. She calls it "good wolf, bad wolf" and we think you'll take lots of valuable insights back to your own Ironman practice. I only do one episode for Ironman Santa Rosa, this episode is with Anastasia McKay. She talks about the training going into the race. She mentions the difficulty in traveling from Kentucky to California. We talk about the road quality of the course along with how the aid stations on this course are not very favorable and some were unmanned. The first transition has a long run up a hill that many would want to be aware of prior registering. The hills through the course were quite fun, but some unforeseen conditions made the bike course interesting. Anastasia mentions the amazing volunteers at the second transition area. She also talks about how she tackles the run of the race.-Quote of the episode: “It was perhaps the scariest things I’ve seen in triathlon.”-Enjoy the show. In today's show, Mike goes solo to talk about this past weekend at Ironman Santa Rosa and Ironman's new "Gold Star Initiative" to have a veteran carry an American Flag during every Ironman race to honor the family of a service member killed in action. He goes over the race week jitters, dealing with stress, sunblock success (thanks Zealios!), nutrition trouble, finding your "why" in racing, and the power of mindfulness on the long course. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mike started the Transitions from War blog to talk about his struggles getting home, PTSD, and addiction and then finding endurance sports to really begin feeling whole again. Breaking the stereotype of illiterate Marines, Mike and Rich met up in college at UC Berkeley. A few years after graduation they teamed up again, this time to discuss and promote a topic blatantly absent from their college days: healthy lifestyle and fitness. It certainly seems like Ironman has it’s hooks into another newbie triathlete and even deeper into a seasoned veteran of the 140.6 distance. We come to you today in honor of smacking down the Ironman Santa Rosa (IMSR) race experiences of first time finisher Laura and 12-time finisher Coach Brian. They take us through their day, discipline by discipline, revealing their nutrition plans, race strategies and how they were forced to shift on the fly. We dive into what their IMSR experience showed them about themselves and they share pre-race words of wisdom for all competitors out there getting ready to hit the starting line. We’re getting great feedback from the YT community on our post-race smackdowns and we are listening. Exhausted, inflamed and sore our athletes rally together to open up about what worked and what they would do different next time. If there is a question that we missed or a subject that was not covered in this episode please make a comment on social media or in the blog post for this episode so we can dispel the lingering mysteries. Thank you for your support we are so grateful to everyone who shares the good word of this podcast, donates on Patreon, uses the Amazon banner ad, has purchased our High Vibe cookbook for athletes and to everyone who continues to come back week after week to connect deeper within this powerful community. Deep thanks to you all!

In honor up the upcoming Ironman Santa Rosa, today's bonus episode is the first of a few guided meditations to help with pre-race jitters many of us get before race day. Though many of us put the long hours of training in, recovery and tapering can be overlooked. This meditation is designed to put your body in a relaxed state, notice and let go of worries, visualize your race, connect to the deeper reasons you race- aka the "why," and be ready to rock when the cannon fires before the swim start.
In this episode I continue the IRONMAN© Oceanside 70.3 series with returning guest Chris Desrochers. She talks about how she has been lucky for many years in regards to her wheels. Although she doesn’t use drugs, she had to buy something that most folks may need. She also goes into details of how her training was between the Super Seal Olympic she recently did going into this race. We kick off our March installment of Ask the YTs with a bird's eye view of where we are with YogiTriathlete. In short, we are living on the razor's edge of everything we believe she is meant to be and total annihilation. For us, this feels normal, our mind training is on point and our hearts are fully in the game. This is the last week of our Save the YTP March campaign so if it is placed on your heart please become a patron today. We believe that this podcast is to continue and so we are holding that intention deep in our hearts. The emails we receive from our listeners and conversations that we have with our local community is telling us that the stories we share are making a positive difference in the lives of many. Our mission at YogiTriathlete is to create a better world. Through this podcast, we create more connection so that no one ever has to feel alone again. Our guests share their stories openly and they are so generous to dive deeper as we ask the "how" behind their healing. I believe the YogiTriathlete podcast is just beginning to come into her own at two years old and we trust fully in the plan for her future. BJ and I share a bit about our training as we get ready for our first races of the season. Right now we are in the thick of it, I'm four weeks out from my first ultra of 2018 and BJ is less than two weeks out from Oceanside 70.3 although his eye is focused strongly on Ironman Santa Rosa in May. If you are coming into town for Oceanside 70.3, BJ and I will be giving a talk on Mindfulness for Athletes at Endurance House on Friday, April 6th 8:30 am. The event is free and open to athletes, community members and family. We finish up our episode today with listener questions on how to discern when fatigue is healthy and when it means we need a break as well as tips for running in the spring when it's still snowing! Thank you, everyone, for your support of the show, we feel your love and we send it right back to you. The link to become a Patreon supporter is below, we thank you in advance for your contribution to keep this medium of connection in flow.
Today we honor the five YogiTriathlete podcast guests who raced the Ironman World Championship this past Saturday. Each one of them crossed the finish line safely after a long, hot 140.6-mile day. A lifelong competitive swimmer Brittany Friedrich was well on her way to Kona glory just missing the ROKA "First Out of the Water" win at her first Ironman in Lake Placid 2016. Growing up in the Adirondacks she knew this course better than the back of her hand. She returned in 2017 to clinch 2nd place in her age group and her Kona qualification that led her to the big island and her first World Championship finish. John Joseph McGowan dedicates his life to clean living, Ironman triathlon and assisting those less fortunate in the world. A well-known vegan activist John journeyed to his 2nd World Championship this year while raising money for the Children's Tumor Foundation in the name of his good friend Alexander. John reports that he had a rough time out there this year but with Alexander on his mind along with his impenetrable "Positive Mental Attitude" (PMA) the finish line was nothing less than mandatory. Billy Hafferty left it all out there last year in Cozumel taking 2nd place in his age group and earning his first Kona qualification. This was a dream of Billy's and his race in Cozumel was his last chance shot as he considered letting go of his big island dream if he didn't qualify in Mexico. With all things meant to be, his dream did come true and he saw it through just a few days ago with an impressive 10:07:18 finish. In this field of dreamers is Troy RGC, an elite competitor well on his way to athletic greatness. His intense drive, discipline and natural ability to stay in flow makes this competitor a champion any day of the week. We were with Troy when he qualified at Ironman Santa Rosa earlier this year where he won his age group and finished 2nd overall. Troy landed himself in 9th place in his age group in Kona this year with a screaming fast 9:23:21. This brings us to the veteran of the group, Susanne Davis she has been in the sport of triathlon for over 20 years and Saturday was her 7th Kona finish. She has claimed world records and world champion status in her career and although this year was not the race she envisioned it was her best and she came through the finish line with nothing but gratitude and class. Susanne placed top 20 in her age group and claimed the ROKA first out of the water title earlier in the day. This is our tribute to these YogiTriathlete guests and everyone who towed the line on Saturday to realize their dreams and inspire others along the way.
Our bodies are always organizing towards health, even when that doesn't seem to be so. The inherent wisdom that lies within the wiring of our physicality is one that zealously pursues the path of healing. I don't believe there are limits to the level of health we can achieve in these amazing vehicles called bodies and I do believe that a foundational piece of our success is determined by the food we eat. Every time we make a food choice, whether that be for ourselves, our families or our children, that choice has a direct effect on health levels. If we fill our bodies with or prepare foods that are not of the highest vibration we make our bodies work that much harder on its path to healing. Overtime it's pursuit to health will be slowed as it reprioritizes healing to stave off illness and disease to its best ability. Our guest today is on the front lines of the pathway to health and she's dealing directly with the future of our world. Dr. Monica Davern is a Resident Pediatrician at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland in the Bay Area. She is a living example of health for her patients as she is an active triathlete, despite her demanding work schedule, and she is 100% plant-based. She sees the effects of poor nutrition every day and educates her patients and their parents on how to heal so many of the common issues in our youth today. Chronic abdominal pain, asthma, obesity, and constipation to name a few, all have deep routes in nutrition. Monica has a skill of connecting with people and sharing her message of health by finding out what's important to them. She meets her patients where they are at and lends a guiding hand to empower them to make simple changes that lead have a great impact not just on the children but the entire family unit. She has seen this first hand with her husband, Jesse and soon to be Ironman who once had to abort a couch shopping mission because sitting down and getting up left him in a sea of pain and inflammation. Monica feels that going plant-based together has strengthened them as a couple. Monica serendipitously walked into our lives at Ironman Santa Rosa 70.3 earlier this year and it was an instant friendship. We are so honored to share her wisdom and experience with you guys today. If you enjoy the show please leave a review on Apple Podcast. If you're interested in helping us lengthen the life of this podcast please consider making your pledge on our Patreon page, we are building out that page each week with exclusive and early release content including two recipes from our upcoming cookbook. We are in deep thanks to all of you, I say it every week but I don't think I can say it enough. Thank you for the support.
We max out the mics in this episode as we bring not one, not two but six people together to recap yesterday’s Ironman in Santa Rosa. Three top tier triathletes along with their #1 supporters flesh out the goings on of Saturday’s 140.6-mile race. We answer listener questions and dive into race strategy, nutrition and navigating the hurt. Susannah, Ironman first-timer, Troy, elite level triathlete and BJ, long course veteran, and YogiTriathlete coach come together in this episode to share their race experience. Even though their exteriors and descriptive details may be different we see once again that at the core of our being we are more similar than different. This was a very cool experience to have such amazing energy on the show today and within the laughs and comradery is so much valuable information for athletes. If you raced Ironman Santa Rosa this you’ll surely enjoy hearing the experiences of your fellow competitors and if you are dreaming of racing in 2018 then look no further than the enthusiasm of this episode to fuel your impending registration. Thanks so much for tuning in, if you are enjoying the show please leave a review on Apple Podcast (iTunes) we are going for 100 by the end of August. We have many to go but we believe our listeners will step up and share their experience with the YTP.
The well-trained mind is showing itself strong in this episode as we recap our experiences at Ironman Santa Rosa 70.3. BJ reveals insight into his mind battles on the course and how he trumped his self-sabotaging impulses to race to his potential that day. Anyone can get the physical fitness, it's the mental fitness that makes the difference on race day. The power of mindfulness practices on athleticism is not only proving itself in scientific studies but it's proving itself in the massive rise of athletes who are now meditating and practicing mindfulness in their daily lives. The true beauty lies in the fact that it doesn't just benefit our sport, it benefits every facet of our lives leaving us to be nothing less than our best. It's simply too good to pass up! If you want in, we are awake and ready for you. We also dive into listener questions about 50K to 70.3 training, mantras and race day meditation techniques, nutrition and prepping for an international Ironman. This episode is chock full but if there's a question you've been hoping we'd answer....well, send it in! This is a monthly show that isn't going anywhere. We've been racing triathlon and running events for two decades. We are open books and here to share our wisdom with you.
