I learned a valuable relationship hack recently. It is something that I can use immediately with others in my life. It's called the “yes, and” rule. It requires strong listening and then taking a conversational route that might not be comfortable for you. Instead of defending or justifying your behavior during a conversation, listen and then respond with, “Yes, and ….”. You will be shocked at how this can improve your communication skills. This “hack” came from a couple of very interesting and talented men. Their names are Jacob Simmons and Tim Casper. They are professionals in the improv industry. They are dedicated to using the skill of improv to teach people how to improve their relationships. Beyond that, they are incredibly skilled actors who perform on stage regularly in various improv theaters. They also own their own theater called The Faraway Theater located in Birmingham, Alabama. I decided to do an improv interview with these gifted performers after one of their shows. I encourage you to take a few minutes and listen to this unique edition of our Crossing The Line podcast. The interview was surprising, interesting and a whole lot of fun.I learned some really helpful and interesting things from Jacob and Tim. When we choose to use the relationship hack “yes and “ we will make a difference.

Weekend Message from Pastor Jacob Simmons
A Conversation with Jacob Simmons
Kevin Johnson, Josh Clarke and Jacob Simmons battle to see who has what it takes to know more useless trivia.
In this episode of Undivided Birmingham, Dr. Chris Crain interviews Jacob Simmons, pastor of Hope Community Church and Jeff Hindman, music minister of Hope Community Church. Hope Community Church was established through the church revitalization process of Church Adoption. McElwain Baptist Church a once thriving church with thousands of members, had been faithfully serving its community for 125 years. Over the years, the church roll declined to 350 members with only 100 people in worship attendance. As Pastor Jacob Simmons states, "McElwain Baptist Church was a declining church, but not a dying church." As a way to help the church revitalize, Shades Mountain Baptist Church, adopted McElwain Baptist and began a new work by establishing Hope Community Baptist Church. In this interview, Pastor Jacob Simmons and Jeff Hindman share their story of God working in this wonderful partnership of two churches.

Reviewing the worst of the worst - so you don't have to!It's been months in the making, but Nathan Packham and Jacob Simmons finally sit down to review the absolute carwreck that is Movie 43.What happens when over a dozen big name celebrities perform a series of nauseating sketches mixed in with a non-sensical plot about gangsters, cougars, and the apocalypse. Chris Pratt takes some laxatives, Batman and Robin go speed dating, Elizabeth Banks gets run over by a cat, and Hugh Jackman... well, see for yourself. The Wilson Awards 2020 - coming soon! Jacob Simmons discusses the importance of abiding in the Lord so that we may bear good fruit. Speaking out of Luke 6:43-45 and John 15, Jacob highlights three main points: 1. Disciples can't produce fruit unless they are connected to the vine. 2. Disciples analyze their own fruit. 3. Disciples will produce fruit from what they love. Reviewing the worst of the worst - so you don't have to!It's the Bad Things 2020 Christmas Special! As voted for you by you, Nathan Packham and Jacob Simmons dig into the Christmas feast that is 1998's Jack Frost. After his tragic death in a car accident, Michael Keaton comes back to life as a snowman to spend one last Christmas with his son. If that doesn't get you in the Christmas spirit, nothing will. Nathan and Jacob have all the trimmings with this one; bad acting, atrocious special effects, dialogue to make your skin crawl, and a snowman puppet that is actually the stuff of nightmares. Ho Ho Holy Crap. Reviewing the worst of the worst - so you don't have to!For their tenth episode spectacular, Nathan Packham and Jacob Simmons review DreamWorks Studios' first attempt at an adult TV show, Father of the Pride. Set in the Las Vegas zoo owned by magicians, Siegfried and Roy, Father of the Pride centres around a dysfunctional family of lions and their various friends including a gay elephant, some steroid-pumping warthogs, and a lobster political activist. Nathan and Jacob are left astounded by this show's poor animation quality, ridiculous plotlines, blunt sense of humour, and an episode that Jacob calls "the worst episode of TV I've ever seen".Don't forget to vote in our Episode 12 Poll!Find us on Facebook - www.facebook.com/badthingspodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/BadThingsPod (@badthingspod)Instagram - www.instagram.com/badthingspod (@badthingspod)Theme music - Boo Boogie by Doug Wood. Reviewing the worst of the worst - so you don't have to!Nathan Packham and Jacob Simmons turn their red baseball caps backwards and skateboard into the world of rap rock to examine the third studio album by Limp Bizkit. This album (which has a title far too long to type out more than once) is a perfect example of the genre; hyper-masculine, hyper-aggressive lyrics over heavy rock beats all shouted and screamed by a white guy from Florida. It's an album full of clunky rhymes, ludicrous metaphors, and LOTS of swearing, but is there actually some good to found here? There's only one way to find out.Don't forget to vote in our Episode 11 Poll!Find us on Facebook - www.facebook.com/badthingspodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/BadThingsPod (@badthingspod)Instagram - www.instagram.com/badthingspod (@badthingspod)Theme music - Boo Boogie by Doug Wood. Jacob Simmons and his family have a farm that grows cranberries, tart cherries, highbush blueberries, raspberries and black currants in beautiful Point Prim, Prince Edward Island. They also own and operate a tile drainage company that installs agricultural land drainage in New Brunswick and in PEI, and Jacob works with his father on both operations. As a former basketball player, he had an invitation-only tryout for Team Canada's National Cadet squad with two future #1 overall NBA draft picks in the mix as well as various other NCAA division one players. He also played at St. FX University, Holland College and Olds College. After leaving college and losing the ability to run and exercise fully (due to injury) for a year, he was bitten by the running bug and came back onto the scene with a vengeance. It was a major year of change for him. He overcame a broken wrist, torn meniscus and an ulcer in his cornea which led him to quit cigarettes and lose 40 pounds. He went from not competing in any road races for almost ten years to running in 27 races including his first marathon and also a 3000+ person race in Galway, Ireland. That year, 2019, Jacob didn't start racing or even running outdoors until May and he was able to accomplish a lot in 8 months. He challenged himself to start off this new decade by running a half marathon (he never ran an official half marathon race before attempting his first full marathon) in each of the four Atlantic provinces, the "Hypothermic Half Marathon" series hosted by the Running Room, with a goal of a top 10 finish in all four provinces. After completing the winter half marathon gauntlet he will begin training for his second marathon in May, and less than two weeks after running that he will compete in the scenic Cabot Trail Relay race in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with a 20km run up Mt. Smokey. He also have his eyes set on his first duathlon and maybe an ultra race this year as well as biking from one end of Prince Edward Island to the other in one day using the Confederation trail systems for a total of 273kms. Jacob knows he has a lot to learn, but he’s enjoying every step he’s taken to date in finding a new fitness passion.

Tray and Mel are joined in studio by Jacob Simmons to discuss the often brushed aside topic of sexual brokenness and the Church. When it comes to sexual brokenness, the church remains silent on it because they often think, “Oh we’d never do something like that” and it becomes hard for someone to seek help form the church when they are comparing their shame to everyone else’s highlight reel. Tray shares some staggering statistics released by the largest porn site in regards to consumption of pornography in 2017 showing that the enemy is hunting in the unique place of sexuality where God can meet us. There is a tsunami of lust pouring over us and its only a few clicks away. The church being silent has created a vacuum because how do we expect our children to have a healthy education of sex when it isn’t discussed. Jacob is the Minister to single adults at Shades Mountain Baptist Church so he has the unique viewpoint of dealing with sexual brokenness in the young adult aspect of the church and single adults in the church. He offers his insight of how to reach this group of people and they discuss the topic of sexuality for young people. When we directly or indirectly send the message that people inside the church don’t have these struggles, we lend this idea that to know better is to do better. But more information didn’t lead to better behavior. If more information did change us, Jesus didn’t have to die. Jacob joined Shades Mountain Baptist Church as the Minister to Single Adults in May of 2015. Shades was his home church during college and seminary. He is over the unmarried adults in the church meaning he leads and administers Sunday school classes, Discipleship Groups, Bible Studies, and outreach. He’s also the minister who oversees Pastoral Care and Benevolence. Jacob is married to Suzanne, who is a hospital chaplain at UAB Hospital, and father to John. In his spare time Jacob is also part of the improv group Ugly baby. He has been improvising since 2009 and has been able to perform in Birmingham, London, Edinburgh, Chicago, New York and Atlanta.
Jacob goes vegan for the week, to find out how easy it is to be green at UEA. On his journey he goes and talks to various experts and students.
