Many things make our local run communities amazing, but one of those things that has the power to take it up a notch is a fantastic local run shop. Caroline Fisher, co-owner of Big Sky Running Company in Winnipeg, was hooked on running as a teenager when she first logged miles with her mother and her run group at Running Room. It inspired her to reach for big goals early on, running her first marathon as a teenager and then joining the Bisons track team at the University of Manitoba. She continued to develop as a runner, became a mom twice over, and has now shown her skills as an ultra trail runner. She even placed third at the Manitoba Marathon last year, with her home crowd cheering her on. As Big Sky recently celebrated its first birthday, Caroline talked about her huge love for the run community and some of the trials and triumphs of being a small business owner. You send the founder and president of the Running Room (John Stanton) and Email asking if he would like to be on your podcast and he says yes in 45 minutes . It's a dream come true and we get to pick the brain of John and ask him how the Running Room got started and what his vision was . We ask about pre race meals , recovery , Ironman's and lots more . John Stanton has written 10 books and has tons of knowledge for anyone out there just getting started and experts alike . Come and join us and listen to the very humble John Stanton tell us about his journey , it's so worth it . It's somewhat ironic when your Doctor tells you somewhat jokingly that you wont be a runner with those knees of yours . Listen to Tanya Owens talk about this story and how her Doctor couldn't have been more wrong . Tanya talks to us about how she started running and was exposed to other runners at the Running Room , how she could never do a marathon . Well in a very short order Tanya went from 10 k runs to a running a marathon . Hear Tanya tell us about how she decided to get into Ironman's even though she had to learn how to swim . Never say never because Tanya has done it all and is very determined and motivated . A great listen for anyone and helpful to get oneself into action .
Talk about a turn around in your life , Eugene Gaudet has absolutely done that . Always wanting to support his family meant working a lot and not always eating healthy . A quick trip to the drive through would fix that . With the smoking and the pop and juice it was an accident waiting to happen . When his Doctor told him he was pre diabetic Eugene argued that still didn't mean he was diabetic . His daughter convinced Eugene to go for a little run with her , it started out with a 1 minute run then a 1 minute walk . That may have saved Eugene's life because after that he quit smoking , cut back on his bad food choices plus quit pop all together . He was able to get off almost all the medications his doctor had him on for his health problems . Now he runs every Sunday at the Running Room and keeps on doing more and more distance . Listen to Eugene tell his story about how his life really changed and how he has big goals that we are sure he will indeed achieve . Inspirational and helpful both , you will not want to miss this episode . Here is a link to A Great Canadian Running Challenge , one of Eugene's favorite runs . https://agreatcanadianrunningchallenge.ca/

Who could start running in 2007 then quickly start teaching how to run at the Running Room ? As a teacher this seems to fit but then you win actual Marathons . Along the way become an assistant coach at STU and then start you own running group for kids called Speeding Cheetahs ! Listen to Ryan O'Shea and his amazing journey , it will knock your socks off !
Today we’re speaking with the Running Room founder, John Stanton, who back in 1981 was an out-of-shape 2-pack-a-day smoker that could barely run from one lamppost to the next. His now popular run:walk approach got him pretty darn fit, to the point that his first 19 marathons were all under 3-hrs and he even made it to the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii. In 1984 he opened a tiny store in Edmonton to service the needs of local runners, which has grown to become the largest running retailer we all know and love with over 100 outlets and 1300 employees throughout North America. But he’s perhaps best known for being the mascot of the Running Room. If you’ve attended a major road race in Canada we’ll bet you’ve stood in a long lineup to get your selfie with this legend, and Carolyn even opens with a story of her various meetings with him over the years. Close to 1 million people have gotten their start in the sport at a Running Room clinic, and that doesn’t include the millions more who have independently followed the advice in his 10 best-selling books. John has received numerous awards for his contribution to the health and fitness of our nation, he serves as an Honorary Col to an army unit in Edmonton, he is an inductee to the Canadian Retail Hall of Fame, he is regularly featured on national news and radio shows, and if that weren’t enough...he is a member of the Order of Canada. John Stanton is powerful but also incredibly humble, and as you’ll see in this interview he genuinely loves the sport of running and possesses a remarkable ability to help others fall in love with it as well. We are so grateful to him for sharing this hour with us, and we hope his words will add an extra spring in your step today. Lyndsay Tessier discovered she loved running at an early age and, when she didn’t make the cross country team in elementary school, Lyndsay continued to watch the other runners practice solely because she loved the sport so much. The cross country coach would eventually agree to allow Lyndsay to participate in an inter-school fun run where she went on to win, resulting in an invite to join the team. Lyndsay would continue to have success running cross country, but would eventually stop running in High School when the expectations of placing took away from her love of the sport. Lyndsay wouldn’t return to the sport until her early 30s when a childhood friend joined a Running Room half marathon clinic and convinced her to do the same. Lyndsay would go on to finish her first half marathon at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and the passion and love for the sport was rekindled. In this episode we’ll discuss Lyndsay’s road race success and her truly inspiring rise to become one of Canada’s fastest long distance runners. We’ll also discuss how running influences her work as an elementary school teacher and how she emphasizes the importance of having fun as the school’s cross country coach. Jacob Simmons and his family have a farm that grows cranberries, tart cherries, highbush blueberries, raspberries and black currants in beautiful Point Prim, Prince Edward Island. They also own and operate a tile drainage company that installs agricultural land drainage in New Brunswick and in PEI, and Jacob works with his father on both operations. As a former basketball player, he had an invitation-only tryout for Team Canada's National Cadet squad with two future #1 overall NBA draft picks in the mix as well as various other NCAA division one players. He also played at St. FX University, Holland College and Olds College. After leaving college and losing the ability to run and exercise fully (due to injury) for a year, he was bitten by the running bug and came back onto the scene with a vengeance. It was a major year of change for him. He overcame a broken wrist, torn meniscus and an ulcer in his cornea which led him to quit cigarettes and lose 40 pounds. He went from not competing in any road races for almost ten years to running in 27 races including his first marathon and also a 3000+ person race in Galway, Ireland. That year, 2019, Jacob didn't start racing or even running outdoors until May and he was able to accomplish a lot in 8 months. He challenged himself to start off this new decade by running a half marathon (he never ran an official half marathon race before attempting his first full marathon) in each of the four Atlantic provinces, the "Hypothermic Half Marathon" series hosted by the Running Room, with a goal of a top 10 finish in all four provinces. After completing the winter half marathon gauntlet he will begin training for his second marathon in May, and less than two weeks after running that he will compete in the scenic Cabot Trail Relay race in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia with a 20km run up Mt. Smokey. He also have his eyes set on his first duathlon and maybe an ultra race this year as well as biking from one end of Prince Edward Island to the other in one day using the Confederation trail systems for a total of 273kms. Jacob knows he has a lot to learn, but he’s enjoying every step he’s taken to date in finding a new fitness passion.

Greetings! Here's the lineup for today: 00:00 - Should the City be doing more to encourage more businesses like the Neighbourhood Cafe & Bookstore in Wolseley? Bill Fugler is the owner of the shop at 898 Westminster. He was in a lengthy dispute with the city over whether or not he needs a grease trap in his plumbing.
