This week on Sustainability Now!, we continue our theme of ringing in the new year with a focus on healthy soils and healthy food! Your host, Justin Mog, is thrilled to be in conversation with two friends from OAK, the Organic Association of Kentucky: Shannon Post is OAK's Farmer Education Coordinator, and one of OAK founders, Larry Brandenburg, owner of Harmony Fields Farm in Shelbyville with his wife, will be part of the organic farmer panel that opens the 14th Annual OAK Conference, January 23-25 at Kentucky State University's Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm in Frankfort. Tune in as we discuss the rich history and growth of OAK and organic agriculture across the Commonwealth. You'll also get a preview of this year's OAK Conference, where you can join fellow farmers, ag professionals and local food system advocates for three days of engagement around this year's theme, Grounded in Organics: From Soil to Market. The Conference features 33 Kentucky farmer-speakers; updates on PFAS, the “forever chemicals” in agriculture; an Organic Farmer Panel featuring Larry Brandenburg, Harmony Fields Farm; Daniel Mays, Frith Farm; Keith McKenzie, Knob Hill Farm; Cortney Moses, GoodThymes Organic Farm; Lisa Munniksma, Freelance Writer - Moderator; and this year's Keynote Speaker, Jesse Buie, who has farmed for over 30 years and is President of Ole Brook Organics, which has been certified organic for over ten years. Currently, his farm in Brookhaven, Mississippi, produces mixed vegetables, melons, ginger and turmeric. He produces a private-label certified organic tea for sale to local groceries and direct to consumers. Scholarships are available. Immerse in farm-based learning on Thursday, January 23, by joining a pre-conference workshop. Don't miss this year's offerings: six half-day workshops on agroforestry, walk-behind tractors, farm profitability, silvopasture, storage crops and an intensive for experienced growers. All workshops include a locally-sourced, farm-to-table lunch. In this episode we meet with Justin “Cheezy” Taylor, soil food web expert and co-founder of https://www.ramblinfarmers.com/ (Ramblin Farmers), to discuss all things SOIL! What is it? Why is it relevant to our daily lives? We dig into how Cheezy discovered homesteading and farming while hitchhiking in Oregon (best ride he ever caught?) and then fell in love with soil, composting, and all things self-sufficiency.  Then, we explore what Cheezy and his partner Logan (the https://www.instagram.com/ramblinfarmers/ (Ramblin Farmers)) learned over the course of 6 years of traveling and working on over 15 organic vegetable farms around the country. Working on farms is no joke and they have some hilarious stories to share!  Cheezy digs deep into the fascinating below ground world of soil and how it relates to our lives on a daily basis. But not all soil is equal! We emphasize the importance of a healthy soil microbiome and explore how microbes actually make food nutritious (or not) depending on their diversity and presence in the food web. We draw clear parallels between soil health and human health, including the fascinating connections between digestion, immunity, and microbes.  Lastly, we round off with how balance and diversity is so important in the microbiome. Microbes form a protective layer around the plants just like they act as our own defensive army in our bodies. They also facilitate all of our nutrient uptake, which is why tillage and soil destruction with chemicals has led to our food being up to 50% less nutrient dense than it was just a few decades ago. As always, we dive into solutions and concrete actions, including some tips on how to talk to your local farmers and what to look for in grocery stores, as well as how to start your own no-till garden! Thanks for joining us! Mentioned in this episode: ‘For the Love of Soil' by Nicole Masters (book) ‘Dirt to Soil' by Gabe Brown (book about conventional farmer transitioning to regenerative) ‘The Hidden Half of Nature: Microbial Roots of Life and Health' by David Montgomery and Ann Bikle (book) ‘The Living Soil Handbook' by Jesse Frost (book for gardeners or farmer)  Dr. Elaine Ingham of Soil Food Web: https://www.soilfoodweb.com/about/ (https://www.soilfoodweb.com/about/) Follow along with Cheezy and Logan @ramblinfarmers on https://www.instagram.com/ramblinfarmers/ (Instagram), https://www.tiktok.com/@ramblinfarmers (TikTok), and https://www.youtube.com/ramblinfarmers (YouTube) Submit your questions and follow us: https://www.instagram.com/thesoilcollective_/ (@thesoilcollective_) on Instagram Email us at info@thesoilcollective.us Like, subscribe + follow https://www.instagram.com/thesoilcollective_/ (@thesoilcollective_)

Welcome to Season 3 I'm your host, JackieMarie Beyer. If you're new to the show, I hope you'll subscribe on iTunes for free or follow on your favorite podcast app and let's get growing. Hey everyone this is JackieMarie Beyer, your host here to help inspire you on your journey to create, grow, and enjoy a green, organic oasis. So let's get growing! Not really. I, I have been enjoying listening to episodes of your podcast and just kind of getting familiar with, you know, what you do and how you conduct your interviews. And it just sounds, you know, pretty much like I expected it. So I don't know. 2m 27s JackieMarie Beyer So tell me, is there like a guest that, well, who's the first guest that stands out in your head? 2m 34s Alison McClendon Daniel Mays. I was like, holy Kerry. You know, May's on there 2m 38s JackieMarie Beyer Is it. He is amazing. 2m 40s Alison McClendon He is amazing. And you know, I I'm just a green horn and all of this, but I am super curious and super inspired by the people that I follow. Who do, who put all this stuff into action in a, in a way that seems to be really just smart. So when I, when I got, sorry, I'm, I'm just having a little brain fart here. I got 3m 19s JackieMarie Beyer Keep going. I'm going to mute my mic. 3m 22s Alison McClendon I got a lot of different books by people who I admired their work and Daniel Mays. I really love the way his book is laid out to just provide concrete information. You know, it breaks down the money part. It really just tells you start to finish. I mean, so many of the books do, but his, I guess just resonated with me just right. 3m 55s JackieMarie Beyer I can not agree with you wholeheartedly. And the thing I love, the way he breaks down the money, he gives you the schedule. I mean, I literally read that book twice, like once and then right in a row, right after that, I have red lines under any of it under all sorts of paragraphs, because it just, it does, it lays it up. You plant this at this time, you plant this at this time, you put these things together, you, you know, these props fit next to each other and he's, and he's got the whole note tilt system down, which is show nice. And the market gardener. And then at the back, you know, he gives you ideas. I'm like what you can charge for things. And at first I was thrown off and I was like, oh my gosh, who is going to pay $7 for eggs? Let me tell you those eggs are $7 in the grocery store. 4m 38s JackieMarie Beyer I'm at my mom's in New York right now. And I could not believe the price. And these aren't even like special eggs, special, you know, they say they're organic or they're cage free or whatever, but it's like, they're not like from the farm they're in the grocery store. I was like, oh my goodness. I cannot believe. I mean, you know, we are in,... Support this podcast

He's the host of The No-Till Market Garden Podcast, and he and his wife are no-till farmers at their Rough Draft Farmstead in Kentucky. Frost's new book is The Living Soil Handbook. Choosing a No-Till Model Frost says that there is no one-size-fits-all model of no-till growing. It depends on the context — things such as soil, rainfall, climate, and the crops being grown. No-till is as varied as the growers using it. 3 Principles to Grow By A successful no-till system goes beyond not tilling. Frost suggests three principles growers and gardeners can use to guide their approach to tillage: Disturb the soil as little as possible Keep the soil covered as much as possible Keep the soil planted as much as possible

On this episode we welcome the No-Till Titan himself, Jesse Frost. Frost owns and operates Rough Draft Farmstead with his wife, Hannah Crabtree. The farm is an organic, no-till market garden based in Lawrenceburg Kentucky. It sells at area farmers' markets and offers a CSA service. Frost is also the host of the No-Till Market Garden podcast. And for Frost, the show grew out of a sense of service and necessity. He saw that there was a dearth of information on how to make no-till practices work for small-scale vegetable farmers and he decided to do something about it. In the process, he's built up a thriving community of farmers who are eager to share ideas and best practices. In addition to his essential podcast, Frost also has an incredible new book out from Chelsea Green Publishing called The Living Soil Handbook: The No-Till Grower's Guide to Ecological Market Gardening. This episode also features an interview with investigative journalist Carey Gillam on an environmental disaster at an ethanol plant in Nebraska and an ongoing lawsuit over dicamba drift in Texas.

Hanna Crabtree and Jesse Frost run a small organic farm in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. In their previous city professions, Jesse was a sommelier at a wine store in New York City and Hannah was an artist in Chicago. The couple met after they both relocated to Kentucky to learn to farm. When we featured them back in 2015, they were living in their off-grid cabin. With no running water or electricity, they really had made a dramatic shift from their previous city lives.  They had recently welcomed their son Further into the world and were making a living running an organic CSA in the tiny community of Bugtussle, Kentucky. Since then, they have moved closer to town in order to set up their farm in an area with a larger customer base. In today's episode, we delve into the reasons why they decided a shift closer to town was right for them in the long-run, their thoughts on the whether small farm businesses can realistically support a family without off-farm jobs, relationship advice for partners making a living together, and how they have started a movement calling for no-till farming and the need for a shift to regenerative agriculture practices. urbanexodus.cominstagram.com/theurbanexodusfacebook.com/theurbanexodus
