Today's podcast is with Mat Boulé and Jeff Moyer.  Mat Boulé is an osteopath and posturologist educated in functional neurology muscle activation techniques, and is the founder of the IP institute.  Mat combines innovative and well-known techniques such as Posturology and Functional Neurology elements to balance the body.  Jeff Moyer is the owner of DC sports training in Pittsburgh, PA.  Jeff has been a multi-time guest on the show, appearing as a solo guest in three shows and on three roundtables.  His expertise includes elements such as Soviet training systems, motor learning, skill acquisition, pain reduction and reconditioning, in addition to neurological concepts as they relate to athletic performance and human movement proficiency. Human beings are complex organisms.  Movement is a multi-faceted action, made up of muscular actions, fascial tensegrity, connective tissue transmission, pressure and fluid dynamics, and of course neuromuscular control that is also connected to one's senses and the outside environment.  To have a complete understanding of athletic movement and performance, it is helpful to have a working knowledge of the neurological components of movement, including foot skin sensitivity, vestibular function, vision, and sided-ness to name a few. Today's podcast digs into those neurological elements that can contribute to performance.  Mat and Jeff discuss how they assess and train clients and athletes with these principles, discussing the use of sensory tools, rolling and rocking variations, balance and foot training, as well as the role of a well-functioning neurological apparatus in skilled athletic movement. #136: Jeff Moyer of the Rodale Institute recalls the intended meaning behind the origin of the term "regenerative" as envisioned by Bob Rodale, and explores what's both exciting and concerning as a new context emerges for regenerative agriculture today. Jeff Moyer is the former CEO, Director, and Farm Manager of the Rodale Institute in Pennsylvania. He is internationally-known for his deep knowledge of organic practices and principles.https://rodaleinstitute.org/To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/jeff-moyer-organic-is-foundation-of-regenerative-episode-one-hundred-thirty-sixThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

On this episode I sat down with Jeff Moyer of DC Sports Training. I've always loved the material that Jeff shares on his socials and his areas of focus so I really looked forward to this conversation. We begin by discussing the basics of the 1 x 20 system and his rationale in beginning to implement the system. Jeff shares that the 1 x 20 is simply a loading scheme and it can be a really easy manner to arrange training for the GPP portion of training. Jeff shares how he can also tailor training to the specific needs of the athletes he serves by utilizing a biomechanical model to inform his exercise selection for a given individual. Motor learning and skill acquisition are discussed in greater detail in the latter part of the conversation. However, Jeff presents the rationale that 1 x 20 is great because it allows for motor learning. Due to 1 x 20System being relatively lower in intensity, technique can be included as a prominent feature of early phases of training. Jeff discusses the idea of the 20 scheme as being variable and athletes may do a bit more or less depending on self regulation. 1 x 20 is useful for the team setting because its extremely time efficient and time is often one of the main things that strength coaches often fight against. Overall the 1 x 20 system is a safe and sensible manner to build work capacity and resiliency in athletes. This transitions nicely to the next talking point, which is a sensible progression of training means. This translates to some crowds as don't burn the steak. This is pivotal not only in the short term but in the long term progression of athletes. Jeff Shares how he likes to have somewhere to take his athletes. if you start too high, too fast, where can you sensibly go? Jeff presents that by selecting meaningful and optimal doses one can keep the nervous system pliable and plastic, which means it is responsive to a wide variety of stimulus. Jeff provides other training considerations and points to the faulty notion of someone being a pro equating to them having a high training age. Jeff shares how important training age is in informing program choices. DC Sports motto is "we build better athletes", so Jeff shares how skill acquisition is at the forefront of his skill development paradigm. In order to discuss how he stacks and builds skills we discuss the placement and development of hard and soft skills. By starting in the format of the ideal environment one is able to push towards proficiency and push towards more dynamic and chaos filled environments that soft skills are typically developed within. Within the process of developing a hard skill Jeff mentioned something I find to be extremely important in the development of efficient movement and that's feel. Sensory information is very important for the development of a skill, many of my prior episodes have dealt with what happens at the neurological level when sensory information is less than optimal. We discuss the concept of key movements and end our conversation by talking about the gait pattern and sprinting, as well as considerations for training the foot in an effective manner. Eli Kulp and Christopher Plant visit Pocono Organics during their massive Food Forever event and sit down with multiple farmers and agricultural geniuses to talk about the future of food production and how we can go beyond sustainability. Food Forever is a communications campaign, which started in 2017, to raise awareness about what crop diversity is and how everyone around the world is connected to and benefits from agricultural biodiversity. Eli and Christopher sit down with Ashley Walsh, Cierra Martin, Jeff Moyer and Erik Oberholtzer. Ashley Walsh is the owner of Pocono Organics and talks about how she got into organic farming, working with Food Forever and Rodale and the creation of her immense organic farm, the home of three story greenhouses.  Cierra Martin is a representative for The Crop Trust, the creators of the Food Forever campaign. The Crop Trust is an international organization with a mission to safeguard crop diversity for food security. The Crop Trust supports a network of genebanks with are facilities for tasking with conserving and sharing seeds. They're making sure this diversity stays alive at the seed level, but they're also packaging it up and shipping it around the world for breeders that use it every day.  Jeff Moyer is the CEO of Rodale Institute. “Widely recognized as the birthplace of the organic movement, Rodale Institute is a nonprofit dedicated to growing the organic movement through rigorous research, farmer training, and consumer education.” Jeff talks about the importance of regenerative organic agriculture, farming not just organically and sustainably, but with the future of the soil in mind, and the recently released White Papers. The White Papers are a report on climate change and how a shift from cash crops to cover crops could actually reverse our carbon emissions by putting carbon back into the soil. Erik Oberholtzer is a chef, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Tender Greens. He is on the Rodale Board of Directors and is a leader of the food forever experience, helping to connect Rodale with The Crop Trust. He discusses the importance of building transparent supply chains, new organic certification regulations, and the nutritional and environmental importance of organic agriculture.

Today’s episode features Jeff Moyer, owner of Dynamic Correspondence Sports Training in Pittsburgh, PA.  Jeff has been a multi-time guest on the show, appearing as a solo guest in two shows, and on three roundtables.  His expertise includes elements such as Soviet training systems, motor learning, skill acquisition, pain reduction and reconditioning.  Jeff is highly driven by learning and is continually on the cutting edge of the industry, yet is also highly practical and results driven in his coaching and training. ACL injury prevention, and injury prevention in general, is a massive portion of the job of a sports performance coach, yet, it is important to ask, is a good injury prevention program any different  in nature than a good performance training program? Jeff Moyer has gotten tremendous results, not only in the injury rates of his athletes, but also in the speed by which he assists athletes in their return to play.  Jeff has been known to help athletes get back on the field, 5 and a half months after ACL surgery, but the tools he uses to do so are not far removed from his primary philosophy on strength training, biomechanics and performance. In today’s show, Jeff takes us inside his methods when it comes to a deeper look at ACL injury factors, as well as how his reconditioning and rehabilitation program mirrors his performance program elements.  We also get into some essential details of some unique weightlifting elements, plyometric training, as well as his use of the “Total Motion Release” system, which harnesses the cross-over effect in the brain to help athletes move and function better Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Timestamps and Main Points 3:50 Jeff’s take on promoting a training program specifically as an “ACL Prevention Program” 11:50 How Jeff is developing athletes from a perceptual standpoint, that can not only improve performance but also with the potential to reduce injury 19:50 Key performance indicators in change of direction that can keep athletes healthier and performing better 25:15 Philosophy of training tempo in weightlifting, as well as utilization of the 1x20 program and other training means that are useful in a reconditioning setting 36:50 Jeff’s take on plyometric and jump training, and how it compliments his lifting program 38:50 A look inside Jeff’s rapid-reconditioning program, working reconditioning alongside, ACL rehab 47:40 Jeff’s use of the Total Motion Release System in reducing pain and improving performance, and discussing the power of the cross-over effect in the brain Quotes  “There was a perceptive aspect to the (ACL) injury, and defensive players were more likely to tear their ACL than offensive players” “I think it’s crap to say that we have a prevention program and a rehab program or whatever, I think they are all one and the same (performance and prevention).  I think a prevention program is something that doctors pitch to make money” “That’s how I do my workout, 50% of it is weights, and 50% is the perceptual side” “I want the outside leg being the leg we plant and cut off of (in change of direction)” “Our training and rehab program are similar, we both start on 1x20; exercise selection is a missing conversation I don’t hear a lot when other people talk about 1x20, they just talk about sets and reps” “I find that the kBox is more joint friendly than traditional barbells” “Not early on in a training career is eccentric training important, you should look more to general strength” “The first thing (in an injury) is I seek to fix what is being protected.  Scars can be very disruptive to fascia or meridian lines” “That is a cheap and easy tool to use (in rehab) just go lie on the grass a half hour a couple of times a day”

Jeff Moyer is the owner at DC Sports Training and is well versed in all things Russian sports performance, and has appeared on this show multiple times, as well as having written a large number of articles on a variety of topics involving the transfer of training to sport. Michael Zweifel has been a prior podcast guest twice and has written a large number of articles regarding the perception and reaction approach to improving in-game movement and agility. In the world of agility training there is a big shift happening in terms of moving things into the perceptual space, and for good reason.  Athletes who fail to make the right decisions in a game will be at a huge disadvantage, regardless of how good their raw ability to change direction devoid of a stimulus is.   Does this mean, however, that all traditional agility and change of direction training is dead? What should we do with all of the more traditional thoughts on agility training in terms of developing the raw physical skills associated with change of direction? This expert crew is going to dissect the answer to these questions and much more for us on the show today. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Philosophy of what good change of direction on the field of play entails Thoughts on baseline physical abilities for better change of direction Change of direction KPI’s for athletes Different approaches to the value and integration of non-perceptive change of direction work How to record or quantify the results of an agility program (if this is even possible currently) Defining pieces of agility ability and who may need work beyond perceptive and decision making training Some of the special exercises Jeff Moyer and Jay DeMayo utilize in their work Summary statement of each coach in regards to agility, perception and reaction “In field based sports, change of direction means the basics of what we are trying to teach, and agility means implementing into a situation where it is responsive to some sort of stimulus”  DeMayo “I want athletes to be able to solve problems on their own without me giving them the answers” Zweifel “In the biomechanics of change of direction, you always have to look at it in the context it is going to be asked in sport… if we are going to change technique or biomechanics, we have to do it within the context of which it is going to be asked in sport” Zweifel “I think that one thing is we would see a lot of carryover and success (into agility) with the integration of some form of extensive method jumping” Moyer “I don’t think there’s so much a biomechanical model; there’s KPI’s” Moyer “If you watch sports a lot of athletes don’t (decelerate) on two legs, they do it on one leg… one of the things I look for is how many steps does it take for an athlete to stop” Moyer “What I hope for is that it looks crisper when they are doing it (COD in sport) and they shouldn’t be thinking about it when they are doing it” DeMayo “In actual open sports, how well you perceive the information in the environment, that will directly dictate mechanics, kinematics” Zweifel “(Regarding defining the results of a COD/agility program) A lot of it’s qualitative” Moyer “It is a learned error, a perceptual error, or a physical error, those are the three things I go through”  Moyer “Know your sport more, watch practices, get Hudl and look at practice, go to games, that’s the number one way I’ve seen it,

Today’s episode features sports performance coaches Jake Jensen and Jeff Moyer.  Jake and Jeff are unique in that they are in-the-trenches coaches who are personally familiar with the work of two legendary coaches and researchers in the field, Dr. Michael Yessis and Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk.  Jeff is the owner of DC Sports Training while Jake works as the head strength coach for a professional hockey team in Berlin, Germany. The training methodology of Anatoliy Bondarchuk in particular has caused some waves in the field in the last few years, but the issue with his system is really the fact that Dr. Bondarchuk coached track and field throwers, where team sports have a lot more complexity in terms of the progression of different skills within that sport, let alone team tactics, strategy, and winning! If you listen to this podcast, there is a good chance that you care much more than simply getting athletes stronger in some familiar barbell lifts and saying you did your job.  As sports performance coaches, we strive to get athletes better at , well, sports! By blending the ideals of Dr. Bondarchuk in terms of training organization and adaptation, and looking at the special exercise battery of Dr. Yessis, we have some formidable weapons in helping athletes reach their highest potential.  This is where Jake and Jeff have done tremendous work in pushing the field forward (check out their recent article on the topic for Just Fly Sports)in regards to maximizing training transfer for a spectrum of athletes. On today’s episode, Jake and Jeff cover the role of general strength development within the scopes of the Bondarchuk and Yessis systems, and then go in detail on how the “SDE” category of the Bondarchuk system can be adapted for team sport performance.   This is a forward thinking episode that is setting a precedent for the impact of a sports performance coach, as well as thought provoking for coaches of any sport. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more.   Key Points: Jake and Jeff’s backgrounds The role of general strength development and 1-rep maxes in the Bondarchuk and Yessis training systems What to make of the “things in the middle” of the Bondarchuk pyramid, such as special strength, and if it could possibly be done without How to track key performance indicators (or SDE’s) for team sport performance How many workouts Jake and Jeff put in a training cycle given the Bondarchuk principles and adaptation types How to monitor when an athlete adapts to a training cycle and when to change exercises for non-throwing/track athletes Quotes: “There is a lot of technique that goes into being able to lift heavy weight for a single.  For an athlete who plays a team sport, as a strength coach, I have to ask myself, how much time do I want to spend teaching this guy how to brace through an 8 second grinder for a squat” “Dealing with Doc, we never did anything under 8 reps (in the weightroom) but those 8 reps were as heavy as you can get” “The thing people have to remember about Anatoli Bondarchuk is he’s done everything.   There are a lot of instances where he uses max effort, 110% squats” “In some applications, super heavy-ass squatting… nasty, raw strength is very important” “It’s hard to learn with max intensity lifting” “By the time we get down to the 8’s, (in the 1x20 system) we are doing some heavy isometrics as well” “What’s wrong with powerlifting today…. too many of these kids won’t lift over 10 reps” “Anything that is special developmental (in the Bondarchuk system) has to involve tactics for team sports” “We are doing some kind of jumping (to track adaptation and what type of adapter the athlete is)” “If you are going to get to know your athletes better, you should have a system in place”

Thanks for the kind words, for a change, Bro. Moyer at the top of the show! Welcome to Episode 60, with your regular hosts and special guest Bro. Matt Blaisdell, Creative Director for the Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction (AASR NMJ). Matt talks about the recent update to the AASR NMJ’s logos and branding, we have a great conversation about the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s Path Forward and Masonry in general, but Larry’s mic broke, so you don’t have to listen to him as much, except for his “Message”… We’re taking bets. It highlights the advanced strategies the big brands use called Category Management - what retailers want.  CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE STRATEGIC GUIDE: Strategic Solutions To Grow Your Brand The future of healthy eating. Consumers want healthy quality foods they can trust but are confused about organic, the features and benefits. Healthy soil produces something even better - regenerative organic. You are what you eat. Welcome. Thank you for listening. I appreciate you being here. Remember, stay to the end for the free downloadable guide. If you like the podcast, share with a friend, subscribe and leave a review. Today's story is really a story of exploration. Let me explain. You've heard me say repeatedly that if you are what you eat, then what you eat matters.  If the food that you put into your system is organic and clean label, ideally, you should be able to trace the ingredients all the way back to the product's origin. This is where we should begin our conversation, but that's not necessarily enough. The next question should be how authentic is the ingredient? Is it what nature intended? Today's story is an effort to unravel this mystery, unravel these questions. It's not as black and white as you would think. The point is this, most consumers want to know exactly what they're buying. They want to know what's in their food and how their food is produced. It is imperative that we as a natural community communicate this appropriately and accurately to the retailers and to our shoppers, essentially giving our customers exactly what they want; the level of quality, and transparency, and authenticity in the products that they're buying that they can know, like and trust; products that they can rely on, on every single purchase. I learned a lot in this episode, and you will too. I learned that just saying that something is organic, while great, is not necessarily enough; that there's something better out there, regenerative agriculture. What is that? What does it mean and why should it matter to you? Today, we're talking with Jeff Moyer at the Rodale Institute. He's going to explain this to us and give us several examples about why this matters and why this is so important not only to the benefit of our customers but to the benefit of the planet, our health, our family, our friends and so on. In episode 42 Gary Hirshbergsaid we need to vote with our dollars meaning that we should commit to buying the products that best fit our nutritional needs, the products that give back, the products that are capable of improving our overall health. Gary also made the point that it's a lot cheaper to eat products that meet our nutritional needs, eat the products that help protect our health and, as he said, help us avoid expensive medical cost because we didn't make the right decisions to begin with. These sentiments have been echoed through almost every conversation I’ve had on this podcast. This is why getting to the heart of the matter was so important for me to be able to share this with you. Today’s episode features a special coaching roundtable featuring three experts in the implementation of the “1x20” training system: Jeff Moyer of DC Sports Training, Matt Thome of Michigan Tech University, and Ryan Bracius of Wisconsin Whitewater. Most folks familiar with Just Fly Sports and the podcast know of Jeff Moyer, as he has been a frequent guest and writer, and is also the first guy to really get me intrigued by the 1x20 system, and its benefits for athletes.  Since then, Jeff has been a huge contributor to Just Fly Sports, and I’ve had a number of coaches ask me about the 1x20 system since our first episode together.  I met Matt Thome and Ryan Bracius in person at the Track Football Consortium VI in Chicago this past December.  Matt is the head strength coach at Michigan Tech, working with football and basketball, and Ryan is developing some of the best football athletes in NCAA Division III at Wisconsin Whitewater.  Both are getting fantastic results with rock-bottom injury rates.  Matt had the idea of talking not just about “1x20”, but particularly about “life after 1x20”, or how to transition athletes to the next step in their training after the 1x20 system has run its course.  It’s important to realize that coaches using the 1x20 model use much more than just this singular set and rep scheme. For those unfamiliar with the 1x20 system, a simple explanation is as follows: Start athletes out with 5-8 exercises, with 1 set of 20 reps each, building up to around 18-23 exercises over time.  Instead of pushing the gas pedal down the first day with the intensity, the exercises are “slow cooked” by gradually adding weight over time.  When athletes reach adaptation (stop improving) on the sets of 20, then the next phase is 1x14, and finally 1x8.  This system was taught to many coaches today by Yosef Johnson who was mentored by the inventor of the system, Dr. Michael Yessis. Coaches who have used the system have noted good to great gains in strength, but also in athletes explosive KPI’s compared to other systems, as well as a reduction in injury rate. On the episode today, we go in depth on each coach’s introduction to the 1x20 system, how they implement it, and what kind of results they are getting.  We’ll also talk about why the 1x20 works so well from a physiological and neural level.  The second half of the episode talks about the transition from the 1x20 system into other training methods, such as velocity based, and special strength training. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Jeff, Matt and Ryan’s initial experiences with the 1x20 system and results Implementation of the 1x20 system on the levels of the collegiate and private sector, and how the coaches work down to the 1x14 and 1x8 segments The thought process of when coaches funnel away from 1x20 into 1x14 and 1x8 setups The nature of velocity based training workouts after the departure of 1x20 and 1x14 set rep setups Special exercises for use in velocity based, specific training periods Approaches to 1RM testing in the 1x20 system Quotes “(Regarding 1x20) Eventually we are covering every joint action, we have 18-23 different exercises on there” “We might start with 5-8 exercises, the fall is a lot of teaching and a lot of learning” “ My Freshmen will do 1x20 from August to Thanksgiving, my juniors and seniors who already have a very good base may only do 3-4 weeks of (1x20) to re-address it” “Generally I’d rather keep athletes in the 20’s longer and just switch exercises, rather than get them in the 14’s (Jeff Moyer)” “1x20 sets the scene for increasing connective tissue strength” “If we’re talking about the primary factors that are increasing a jump test or sprint test with just the 1 set of 20, it’s probably more related to motor unit coordination and motor...

Today’s guest is Tony Holler, Head track coach at Plainfield North High School, Illinois and Co-founder of the Track-Football Consortium in the Chicago area. I’ve known Tony for about 3 years now after meeting for him the first time at the original “Track-Football Consortium”.   Listening to Tony talk about team culture and building sprinters was one of the most memorable aspects of my experiences there, and really keyed me into a different mentality when it came to track practice. Tony has had great success at Plainfield North, including this last year where freshman Marcellus Moore ran 10.40 at the Illinois state track meet, one of the best freshman performances in high school track history.  He is also a chemistry teacher, and has many years of football coaching experience in his belt.  Tony has written some amazing articles over the years on Simplifaster, and formerly, FreelapUSA, on sprint culture, training, and coaching. Tony knows how to make track fun.  When most people think of track, they think of intense speed-endurance and tempo workouts, throwing up after practice, and shin-splints.  Tony’s practices look nothing like this, and they are the antithesis of the long-slow running model, and he gets great results.  His model towards speed training co-incides heavily with former podcast guest Jeff Moyer’s attitude towards training athletes, as we have spoken at length about in the form of strength training. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: A recap of Tony’s last track season and what he learned from Marcellus Moore, the #1 freshman in the United States Tony’s sprint philosophy and its evolution over the years Setting up lactate training throughout the competitive season Approaches to rest and short practices for high school track and field The rationale and idea behind “X-Factor” plyometric and agility workouts Ideas on recording and publishing athletes sprint times Fluctuations in the “mode” of speed training throughout a high-school year Peaking considerations in a “low dose” training system Quotes “Whatever it is that makes people fast, I think (Marcellus’s) feet might be the most important thing” “I’ve always told kids to run fast and loose, and make it look easy, and I’ve quit saying that to Marcellus, because there is nothing loose or easy about the way that he runs” “You don’t change things just because it’s not your stereotypical look (in athletes)” “I started writing down the (40 yard dash) times, ranking them, and putting them up on a bulletin board, which became the most popular bulletin board in the high school” “We never do a lactate workout until the season starts” “In a period of 19 weeks, there is 27 lactate workouts (including meets counting as lactate workouts)” “47.99 wasn’t bad for a junior, there was nothing wrong with him dying a little bit late in the race” “I don’t even know what a tempo workout is!  We don’t say the words tempo, fitness, conditioning in our program” “To me, track and field is all about performance, it’s not about keeping kids until 5pm” “We never practice more than 40 minutes” “There’s no way to say “get your knees up” to a guy running at 10 meters per second” “The record, rank and publish is critical to what we do” About Tony Holler Tony Holler is a teacher and coach at Plainfield North High School. Holler has 35 years experience coaching football, basketball, and track. Holler is a member of Illinois Track & Field Hall of Fame and Co-director of Football-Track Activation Consortium along with Chris Korfist.

Today’s guest is Jeff Moyer.  Jeff returns for his second appearance on the show, and talks in depth on training approaches for building speed in athletes.  In today’s industry, there are a lot of theories thrown around, and a lot of “smart” sounding terminology used to describe those theories.  In the end, however, the only thing that matters is what works. In that vein, Jeff is a fantastic guy to talk to, since he has three things that stand out in this arena. He gets great results in speed improvement in his athletes He has an immense thirst for knowledge and frequently talks with some of the best coaches in the industry He has a significantly active B.S. meter Ever since our first episode together I’ve had numerous chats with Jeff about all arenas of sport and athletic performance, and I’m always amazed at the people he is learning from and the concepts he is working with.  When it comes to training athletes, Jeff gets it. Today, we cover just a few key arenas of training speed, but in great detail.  Particular points of interest for this episode are the relationship of sprint mechanics to injury, special strength training, and training dosages.  Mastering these ideals is what gives Jeff the results he has, and any coach can benefit immensely from listening. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Jeff’s concise philosophy on speed training Practical examples of the minimal effective dose of training for speed Jeff’s process of assessing speed technique and needs Optimizing training of the hip flexors and psoas for sprint and speed performance Quotes “More doesn’t equal better.  Better equals better.” “The first question I always ask is, “Are we doing too much”.  Once you’ve seen how little you can do and get away with it, everything else is just too much” “As far as increasing intensity, it depends on the age of the athlete, if it’s a really young athlete, I’ll just switch exercises… there’s no need to increase intensity.” “How you feeling, what did you guys do?.... we’ll maybe let’s just do these three exercises and let’s get the hell out of here” “What I chase is improvement, while other coaches chase capacity” “(Regarding when you set a PR in training) When you’re up, you’re up, fold, take your money, and walk away from the table” “To quote Jay Demayo: “Simplicity of training, intensity of focus”.” “The psoas, hip flexors, and even the abdominals contract most powerfully behind the body to drive the knee forward” “I’ve never assessed an athlete who complained of patellar tendonitis that did not run on their heels” “What’s cool with the specialized exercises, with the younger athletes, they’re used as a great motor learning tool” About Jeff Moyer Jeff Moyer is the owner of Dynamic Correspondence Sports Training, whose motto is, “We Build Better Athletes.” At DC Sports Training, athletes work on the physical, mental and visual aspects to the sports. Their goal is to deliver the athletes of the greater Pittsburgh area the highest, most efficient results year after year of training with us. We will exhaust our means in order for our athletes to achieve the highest results, and to create a system model that will develop our athletes both physically and intellectually. Education must be the road to which will help us set this standard. Our results will be the vehicle which to drive us. Jeff graduated in 2004 from Hartwick College where he was a two sport athlete (Football & Track & Field). Jeff has been a sport coach (Basketball & Football) at the youth, JV, Varsity and College level for football for over 10years. Jeff has been in the strength in conditioning industry for over a decade, having worked in the medical, private, team, high school and collegiate settings,

This week’s guest is Jeff Moyer, owner of Dynamic Correspondence (DC) Sports Training in Pittsburgh area, Pennsylvania.  Jeff is a relentless learner with great knowledge in a variety of training methods. Jeff has experience with some relatively new, but very effective training ideals, such as the 1x20 strength system, modern research and philosophy on cueing and skill acquisition, vision training, and more. The team that squats and benches the most doesn’t win the game.  The team that has talent, and trains in a way that transfers properly to the field of play will win.  Of course, being strong is of huge importance, but how do you get strong in a way that leaves maximal adaptation to other vital athletic qualities?  Also, how do we engage the brain in the way it might be processing information on the field in regards to our basic vision and movement skills? Fortunately, Jeff is a guy who has found a lot of ways to train that transfer from the gym to the field, particularly in the areas of skill acquisition and vision, not to mention an efficient strength training ideal that leaves athletes jumping higher and running faster. To be completely honest, with my own tennis players, if I had a choice between increasing their vertical jump or improving some agility test, or… increasing their vision and ability to see and process the tennis ball in a variety of situations, I’d pick vision hands down. This talk between Jeff and I is great for strength and sport coaches alike. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: How Jeff got introduced to, and uses the 1x20 strength training system for greater performance effects vs. traditional training programs Thoughts on the mechanism of how the 1x20 program works Jeff’s thoughts on the biggest sprint technique deficiencies in his athletic populations The proper way to perform a glute-ham raise for maximal athletic performance Jeff’s philosophy on getting technical changes in athletic technique and performance Using sensory techniques in improving skill acquisition Differences with internal/external focus on cueing How to work with and coach left brain vs. right brain athletes What got Jeff into vision training, and what kind of results can coaches expect How coaches can predict eye weaknesses based on frequent errors of players in vision based sports Resources for coaches interested in vision training and performance Quotes: “The 1x20 builds capillary density, and it strengthens connective tissues more” “If I can get you strong with 1 set of 20, 1 set of 14, or 1 set of 8, why would I do 3 sets of 10?” “The 1x20 is a continuum of strength (not just endurance); I can tell you doing 1 set of 20, in the 8-12 workout range, kids average 5-6” in their broad jump and 1-2” in vertical jump without doing a single jumping exercise” “There is a separate threshold for adaptation than there is for recovery” “(Regarding monitoring vs. data) If you concentrate solely on results, then the recovery will take care of itself” “The biggest thing I see with youth athletes is, they run on their heels man” “Anyone who has done the GHR the way Dr. Yessis performs it, they’ve never had hamstring injuries” “I’ve never assessed or met an athlete who complains of knee pain that runs on the balls of their feet (doesn’t run on their heels), as well as shin splints” “Bent knee calf raises for dorsiflexion is one of the most underrated exercises out there” “The three key (special) exercises according to Verkhoshansky and Yessis are pushoff ankle exercises, knee drive, and pawback” “They need the sensory information of what’s wrong, the old way of doing it, and they need the sensory information of how it feels to perform the correct technique, use their own words to describe how it feels”

Our guest for the Just Fly Performance Podcast #5 is Chris Korfist.  Chris has been a huge influence on my coaching over the last decade, and I’ve had the pleasure of presenting alongside him at the last 3 “Speed Football Consortiums”. Chris is one of the best sprint coaches in the nation, and has relentlessly tinkered and adjusted his process over the years to arrive at his current winning methods of training. This article is sponsored by Exxentric, makers of the kBox inertial training platform.  The kBox is changing the way many coaches are thinking about resistance training and building strength.  To check out more about the kBox, check out exxentric.com or email Andreas Ahlström at andreas.ahlstrom@exxentric.com Also, for those interested, Chris has converted his old speed training DVD’s to electronic downloadable format, which you can purchase. Below are some of the key areas that Chris and I covered through the course of this podcast. Key Points How to make agility maximally applicable to on-field performance The importance of the visual field and recognition cues in agility training Chris’s thoughts on the speed ladder How to create more extension power by ratcheting the hips in agility movement Chris’s personal progression from powerlifting to his current strength methodology in building speed Chris’s essential 3 strength exercises for building sprint speed The origins of “DB Hammer” and who he really was Why the 4-way hip gets a bad rap, and how to use it properly for speed building Chris’s approach to strength and speed training for athletes in the off-season Chris’s concepts on overspeed training The neural effects of correct overspeed training Chris’s ideas on volume and the minimal effective dose when training the nervous system Environmental changes during maximal velocity work The further adjustment of mini-hurdles/wickets to eliminate crossover running and improve performance Vision training and its effect on speed and power performance The importance of continual stimulation and challenge in human movement and speed performance For those of you not familiar with Captain Morgan’s that Chris references, here is a video below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KJIJH0YBLM I also took a piece of something I mentioned regarding the minimum effective dose, comparing a 1x20 program vs. more traditional 5-3-1 or Westside programming and it’s effect on athletes from this great interview with Jeff Moyer that Jay DeMayo did for his own podcast. Quotes from the show: Regarding agility “With agility drills, there needs to be some kind of recognition or reaction to what you see, because in sport, you react you what you see, especially in team sports.  You’ve got to recognize that something’s going on, and you have got to get there”. “When you’re braking, cutting, or even accelerating, a great cue is how much separation are you creating between your knees” “I don’t think you can get married to any exercise or anything, you have to keep searching, and then every individual is different, you have to find what works for the individual” “I think the 4-way hip machine gets a bad rap” Regarding off-season training: “If I have 2 days to work on speed, one day we’ll do a fly of some sort, probably 10 meters, and then we’ll do an acceleration day, and we’ll keep doing that until the weather turns crappy.  You can build on your flys by doing other exercises and other things, but those are the basis of what I want to improve on.  Because once the weather turns crappy, your done, you need to do some isometric work, some other stuff.   You can’t work on those things (speed and acceleration) anymore as I’ve lost my space” “Regarding my athletes who have been around for a little bit, we’re either doing overspeed (on the 1080 sprint) or we’re accelerating.” “You can jack up peoples numbers/performances by changing the way that they perceiv...
