Ol’ 55 (Closing Time, 1973)Diamonds on My Windshield (The Heart of Saturday Night, 1974) Tom Traubert’s Blues(Small Change, 1976)Muriel (Foreign Affairs, 1977)Romeo Is Bleeding (Blue Valentine, 1978)Jersey Girl (Heartattack and Vine,1980)Tom Waits & Crystal Gayle: Picking Up After You (One from the Heart, 1982)16 Shells from an 30.6 (1983) (Swordfishtrombones, 1983)Frank’s Wild Years (1983)(Swordfishtrombones, 1983)Jockey Full of Bourbon (Rain Dogs, 1985)Downtown Train (Rain Dogs, 1985)Way Down in the Hole (Frank’s Wild Years, 1987)Going Out West (Bone Machine, 1992)The Black Rider (The Black Rider, 1993)What’s He Building? Alex Imas is an assistant professor of economics in the Social & Decision Sciences department at Carnegie Mellon’s Dietrich College. His research dovetails perfectly into the department’s cross-disciplinary approach by blending behavioral and experimental economics, particularly how social concerns and emotions influence decision making and preferences. His most current research examines the effectiveness of prosocial incentive schemes and how subtle changes in social norms can have large effects on behavior. However, our conversation started with Alex discussing his findings with Sally Sadoff, from the University of California in San Diego, and Anya Samek from USC, on the effectiveness of loss contracts. Loss or clawback contracts are similar to incentives but instead of getting paid at the end of the work – contingent of successful achievement, the clawback or loss contract gives you money up front and you are forced to give it back what you don’t achieve the appropriate levels of performance. Many people would say they’d prefer a regular bonus structure – to get paid upon successful completion of their work – but Alex, Sally and Anya’s work found something different. The loss contract proved to be a commitment device – it helped reduce shirking – and improved performance overall. Even people with a higher sense of loss aversion tended to benefit most from loss contracts. There are even some people who ended up preferring loss contracts. In our grooving session, Kurt and Tim discuss their real-world experiences with clawbacks: do they work and in what circumstances are they most successful? With that, please sit back and enjoy our conversation with Alex Imas. More music chat (which is the goal, after all) with Kent, Vanessa, Martin & Sam, as Waits releases some of the tension established in the previous track with this weird breathy hymn to the end of life. With discussion of other weird vocal styles, a comparison between bleakness vs acceptance in death, plus an exciting bonus track featuring the resonant space inside Sam’s mouth, Song by Song continues it’s journey through Bone Machine. Back for a second week, Matthew Crosby joins Martin and Sam to take a look at Jim Jarmusch's 1989 multiple-narrative movie Mystery Train. While we're all full of love and excitement for the quirks and details of the film, there's some debate as to the strength of some of the acting performances, the narrative coherence, as well as whether it's Elvis or Carl Perkins. Sam and Martin welcome friend of the show Matthew Crosby to dig into one of Waits's most sizeable film roles, the 1986 Jim Jarmusch classic Down By Law. Immediately proving their analytic credentials by remembering at least two of the main characters' names, Matthew, Sam and Martin discuss the acting strengths (and weaknesses…?) of the three protagonists, the improvisational elements in the scripting, as well as Jarmusch's ability and willingness to film actors listening. Back in the studio, Sam and Martin regroup briefly for a discussion of some of the features in this fourth track from Rain Dogs. More magpie work from Waits, cherry-picking children’s rhymes and pirate songs, as well as the unique guitar stylings of Marc Ribot in both collaboration and his solo work. Anywhere I Lay My Head - Daniel Kerr-Hobert The original intention of Jughead's Basement was not to conduct interviews of band members, but only to spotlight some of my favorite writers writing about some of my favorite records. But that quickly veered towards having a few interviews since I enjoy having conversations about music and creativity. I now like the balance of both interviews and writers. I had scheduled Tom Wait's Rain Dogs before seeking interviews became a facet. Instead I gathered together the best of my favorite writers, and they shared their stories and thoughts on one of the best singer/songwriters of the last few decades: Tom Waits. I did try to get an interview with him, but with no success. Really it was a pipe dream, a quixotic challenge I gave myself. I do plan on continuing my effort to get an interview with him, which I would instantly sprinkle on top of this podcast. But until then this single podcast represents the purity of my original idea. http://www.johnjugheadpierson.com/ http://www.tuesdaynighthoot.com/
It's time for a brand spankin' new podcast! I had a special guest this week, Chris Hume, director of Red State Road Trip and Red State Road Trip 2. Check them out at redstateroadtrip.com or shootandrun.net. Chris also directed a mini-documentary about the Geological Museum (Shameful self-promotion: I am in it ripping our failed football team and sharing my thoughts on the UW president's benefits.) This week's show featured music from Treepeople, Sonic Youth, The Dead Weather, Superchunk, Tom Waits, The Love Me Nots, Super Furry Animals, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Modest Mouse, and the Angry Malcontent ranted about our space program, and our lack of motivation ("Where's my goddamn hover car?!"). Blue Collar Joe debated Aurora Firestone on health care and got owned by Aurora and the Angry Malcontent. I shared my thoughts on Urbandictionary.com, and, for the first time, we had an unrelated, two-way tie for d-bag of the week! (Note: I referred to Robert Webb as Richard Webb a couple of times. Oops.)Track Listing:"Everything'll Be Alright," Superdrag "Sunday," Sonic Youth "Break My Heart," The Love Me Nots "We've Got to Get Out," Maritime "Running With the Wasters," The Takeover UK "Tidal Wave," The Apples In Stereo "The Ride, Pt. 2," Calexico "Caucasian Blues," Jarvis Cocker "Anenome," The Brian Jonestown Massacre "Only Shallow," My Bloody Valentine "So Far from Your Weapon," The Dead Weather "Jockey Full of Bourbon," Tom Waits "Dramamine," Modest Mouse "Show Your Hand," Super Furry Animals "Car," Built To Spill "Teller," Throwing Muses "In Like Flynn," Girls Against Boys "Nub," The Jesus Lizard "Seven," Sunny Day Real Estate "Grace Cathedral Park," Red House Painters "Slack Motherf*cker," Superchunk "Losing Skin," Seaweed "Andy Warhol," Treepeople "Getting' High for Jesus," Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs
