Welcome to a special Halloween-themed show of THE ARCHIVE on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. Your host Jason Drury has collaborated with famed soundtrack blogger, Jon Mansell, to create a show so scary, that Jason had to hide behind his chair while working on the voiceovers. The show's delights include music for THE LADY IN WHITE (Varese Sarabande Records) by composer/director Frank Laloggia, Krzysztof Komeda's unusual work for Roman Polanski's 1967 film THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS (Power Bros Records) as well as Ennio Morricone's excellent score for the not-so-excellent EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (Warner Bros. Records). Jason and Jon also put under the spotlight music from Bronislau Kaper's 1954 score for THEM (Monstrous Movie Music Records) and the classic Hammer horror with James Bernard's main theme from DRACULA (Silva Screen). You'll also hear a suite from DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS (Silva Screen) as well as Bruno Nicolai's theme for II CONTE DRACULA (Digitmovies). The show finishes off in a lighter mood by playing a selection from LOVE AT FIRST BITE (Intrada Records) by Charles Bernstein. With the current release of Justin Hurwitz's new score for 'Babylon' in cinemas, Matthew Sweet looks at the theme of decadence in the movies through examples of its music. The programme includes notes by Debbie Wiseman for 'Wilde', Jen Anderson for 'Pandora's Box'; 'Caligula' by Bruno Nicolai, Nino Rota's 'La Dolce Vita', Jonny Greenwood's 'Inherent Vice' and Dustin O'Halloran's 'Marie Antoinette'. Philippe Sarde scores with 'La Grande Bouffe' and Craig Armstrong with 'The Great Gatsby'. The programme also features music by John Barry and Georgio Moroder, and the Classic Score of the week is Jerry Goldsmith's 'LA Confidential'. To round things off, a decadent helping of 'Babylon'.
The Atomic age is upon Blood on the Tracks this month as all sorts of strange radiation-born monsters are invading the perfect utopia that was the 1950s *cough-cough*. Anyway, it was a great decade to be a sci-fi and horror fan, and it was a decade that produced a lot of great film scores.

Episode 76 (Franco-files part 4) Bringing things full circle Alec and Derek watch Jess Franco’s 1969 Eugénie...the story of her journey into perversion, not to be confused with Franco’s subsequent Eugénies including our first in this series. This film comes at the peak of his relationship with producer Harry Alan Towers and the polish that’s their collaborations achieved. With the staggeringly glamorous location and loungedelic Bruno Nicolai score, the scene is set for one Jess’s first great Sadian adaptations. This time talking inspiration from De Sade’s Philosophy in the Boudoir, wealthy siblings (Franco regulars Maria Rohm and Jack Taylor) initiate curious ingenue Eugénie (Marie Liljedahl) into a cult of De Sade worshiping glitterati, lead by the sinister Dolmance (played with utmost gravitas by Christopher Lee) What begins as a trip to an island of decadence becomes a fantasy for the privileged and perverse.Support PsychotroniCast by subscribing to our Patreon!www.patreon.com/psychotronicast

"We recorded a podcast. We recorded a podcast for you. Oh, what a thing to do. And it was all Giallo…" This week Kyle, Matthew and Natalie sit down with Radtober alum and spooky movie aficionado Alex Jacobs to talk about the uniquely Italian horror movie genre: giallo. Beginning in the 1960s, Italian filmmakers inspired by pulp novels and murder mysteries created proto-slasher films known for their stylistic use of music, color and black-gloved killers (along with brunettes and rampant murders at boarding schools). The gang discusses giallo's grand tradition of insane titles. Kyle and Alex get nostalgic about the use of the snap zooms in movies. Plus, we learn about vintage Italian cinema's total disregard for audio recording. But it wouldn't be "This Is Rad!" if there weren't some solid tangents, including a loving tribute to the non-giallo but still Italian horror classic “Suspiria." A fun and informative chat that lovingly celebrates a cool, lesser known corner of the horror movie landscape. Weekly Rads: Raw, Happy Death Day, Stage Fright (1987) Raddendums: Blood and Black Lace, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Suspiria, Dario Argento, Deep Red, The Case of the Bloody Iris, Five Dolls for an August Moon, All the Colors of the Dark, Bruno Nicolai, Twitch of the Death Nerve, Pieces, Four Flies on Gray Velvet, The Perfume of the Lady in Black, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times, City of the Living Dead, Berberian Sound Studio, The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears, Inferno, Goblin, The Night Evelyn Came out of the Grace, What Did They Do to Solange? The new Beyond Naschy episode brings us another giallo and our first chance to talk about director Umbeto Lenzi. If you are only familiar with Lenzi's work through his horror movies EYEBALL might come as a shock. We discuss the amazing number of highly entertaining (and competently made!) films from this under-sung Italian genius (?) and speak about his skill at crafting fun tales. EUEBALL is a very fast and witty murder mystery that has a number of pluses and very few minuses. One of the best elements is the energetic, exciting score by maestro Bruno Nicolai which is peppered throughout the show. Of course, the main, reoccurring theme will be familiar to longtime NaschyCast listeners but there are several other melodious tracks. The discussion ranges all over the film with each of us finding it amusing that the cast of American tourists in Spain are very much like a group of typical stereotypes from an Irwin Allen disaster epic - TOWERING EYEBALL INFERNO, perhaps? And Troy comes another step down the path of accepting that a Giallo is always going to screw you by withholding vital need-to-know information - Guessing the murderer's identity is the only chance you have because empirical evidence is useless in one of these thrillers. You just gotta enjoy the ride!
