This off-the-cuff interview with Robert Schneider, which went down spontaneously after our Strawberry Alarm Clock conversation concluded, unexpectedly became a tidal wave of incredibly moving, impassioned notions about identity and fulfillment. And although it preceded Will Cullen Hart's untimely passing, much of it seems to pre-empt the tragic event lying in wait just around the bend. Here's just a few of the many things Robert and I discuss in this podcast: The superfluousness of LSD to the middle-aged brain; The levels of fulfillment Robert gets from music vs. math at this point in his life; The background origin story of the Elephant 6 Enthusiasts Facebook Group; How his musical path will likely look just around the bend; The massive impact Bill Doss's death had on his identity; And Robert's favorite Apples In Stereo LP. To kick off our SIXTH SEASON of the podcast, Kelly Finnigan talks about his soulful new album A Lover Was Born (out Oct 18 on the Colemine Records label) in a conversation recorded live last summer during RSD Summer Camp at the fabulous Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans. Last year we featured the excellent documentary The Elephant 6 Recording Company, and as we run up to the RSD Black Friday* release of the lovingly curated official soundtrack album (from ORG Music) on November 29, we asked the film's director C.B. Stockfleth and producer Rob Hatch-Miller to talk about it. *Record Store Day Black Friday is November 29th. Talking with Robert Schneider is like riding a rollercoaster that's not quite tethered to its track—with all the thrills an experience like that portends, and none of the danger. Needless to say, collaborating with him on this show has been one of the most invigorating experiences of my life. Here's just some of the many things Robert and I touch on in this podcast: An imagined series of reasonings to explain why The Strawberry Alarm Clock would choose to leapfrog from string-laden hippie elevator music to blues rock; An incredibly intimate rendering of a “Good Morning Starshine”-based jingle that served as young Robert's very first hit; And wildly caffeinated rundowns of the Good Morning Starshine LP, not to mention (in a Director's Cut exclusive) the slew of incredible 45s that marked the end of the line for the band! After two music book episodes, RSD Goes To The Movies, pointing our lens at two rock documentaries, each told from inside two different psychedelically-incinded music scenes. Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo is here with Rob Hatch-Miller (Other Music) to discuss C.B. Stockfleth's film, The Elephant 6 Recording Co., but first, director Roddy Bogawa talks about the film he made with the late Storm Thorgerson (of Hipgnosis) called Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. Plus the return of RSD co-founder Carrie Colliton, back in Raleigh, NC, after running the RSD Summer Camp in New Orleans. Go to RecordStoreDay.com for the latest information about RSD. Written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Sponsored by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Crosley turntables. This episode is dedicated to the late Jerry Moss (1935-2023), who passed away on August 15 at the age of 88. Moss was the co-founder, with friend of the show Herb Alpert, of A&M Records. Please subscribe to our podcast, and by all means tell your friends about us, we love organic, word of mouth promotion.
Today's episode is about "The Elephant 6 Recording Co." (C.B. Stockfleth, 2023), about the titular record label's roster of wild outsider indie artists such as Neutral Milk Hotel, the Olivia Tremor Control, the Apples In Stereo, Elf Power, the Music Tapes, the Minders, the Gerbils, of Montreal, Beulah, Dressy Bessy, Great Lakes & more. Our Very Special Guest is the legendary Lance Bangs, whose credits are too long to list here, but he's worked with most of your favorite musical artists and all of your favorite Jackasses. The movie is a true audiovisual treat, and Lance was there at the time with these musicians (he was roommates with Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel) and provided much of the film and still photography seen in the movie. So he's the perfect person to shed light on the 90's underground music and art scene in Athens, GA and the making of the movie itself. Plus we discuss the origin of Jackass, his films about Pavement and Slint, and the long and tantalizing list of musicians who Lance has filmed over the years for documentaries we hope to see one day. The Elephant 6 Recording Co. is in US theaters August 25th, 2023 and on VOD September 1 (Amazon & Apple TV) from Greenwich Entertainment. In Canadian Theaters August 25th and VOD September 26th from levelFILM. On April 14, 2018, at Jackpot! Recording Studio, I interviewed Robert Schneider in front of a live audience. Afterwards, he did a short solo set, and then The Minders played – a band both of us had recorded albums for and are friends with. Robert and I first met in 1996, when I interviewed him and The Apples In Stereo for Tape Op #2. Alongside some classic Apples and The Minders albums and other projects he's in, he recorded and produced records for Neutral Milk Hotel [#11] and The Olivia Tremor Control [#17] and co-founded The Elephant 6 Recording Co. (See the wonderful The Elephant 6 Recording Co. documentary that we are both in). Now, with his recently attained Doctorate in mathematics, we sat down in front of a live audience to chat again! Check out the podcast of this conversation as well!

There are still some pretty juicy nuggets out there in pop culture history that are worth being unearthed...On this episode we're dialing it back to the college rock days of the 1990's as we look at a bunch of bands who managed to make their mark in a very interesting way. It's time for 'The Elephant 6 Recording Company'.The inside story of the 1990s psychedelic rock bands Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Apples in Stereo-- the founding groups behind the Elephant 6 collective, as well as a host of other artists.Lots of great bands came out of this period and we were really looking forward to talking with director Chad Stockfleth....BUT....he was having a baby and couldn't make it (congratulations by the way). Thankfully producer Rob Hatch Miller (a filmmaker in his own right, check out 'Other Music") stepped in for a great conversation about this unique time period in music history.
Way back in our very first episode, we mentioned doing an episode on The Elephant 6. Well, it only took two and a half years and sixty-something episodes but here we are. Join us for a showdown of Elephant 6 superpowers: Neutral Milk Hotel and The Olivia Tremor Control. Support the show

The InterviewIt's not hyperbole to say that Steve Keene has produced more original artwork than most (if not all) American artists, having painted more than 300,000 works in the last 30 years.Raised and educated in Charlottesville, Virginia, he first came to my attention in the mid-1990s, when I was working for the indie record label Drag City. Keene had done the cover art for the Silver Jews' Arizona Record as well as Pavement's Wowee Zowee on Matador. He had gone to college with David Berman (Silver Jews) and Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) in the 1980s, and they remained friends and collaborators afterward.Although he is known to many for his indie rock album covers, he has a much bigger audience today outside of the music scene of downtown NY from another era. Not only is he now collected in museums but he is still lovingly known for making affordable art: most of Keene's work retails for under $70; in the 1990s heyday, it was only $5 or $10 a piece. Steve continues to crank out 50 paintings at a time, day-in and day-out, from his converted auto body shop home/studio in Brooklyn, where he has lived and worked with his architect wife and family for decades. The Steve Keene Art Book—originally conceived during his sold out show at Shepard Fairey's LA Gallery Subliminal Projects in 2016—is the first art book dedicated exclusively to his work as a fine artist. For this episode, I spoke with the book's editor Daniel Efram, a photographer, producer, and long-time manager of the Apples in Stereo—for whom Keene also created the cover art on Fun Trick Noise Maker 25 years ago—about Steve Keene and his lifelong artistic journey.I've been a long-time fan and collector of Keene's work. Twenty years ago, I spent a day with him, profiling him in the pages of Stop Smiling, “The Magazine for High-Minded Lowlifes,” which I published from 1995 to 2009 from Chicago and New York. Hence, this was a nice circle of life moment. The Steve Keene Art Book is published through Hat & Beard Press and Tractor Beam, Efram's New York City-based press. The ReadingEditor Daniel Efram reads from his essay in The Steve Keene Art Book.Music by The Apples in Stereo

Even after conquering the world and experiencing the highest highs celebrity had maybe ever known, by summer 1964 John found himself at odds with the public persona he'd been living with. After a journalist told him he felt John was more revealing in his offbeat poetry and prose than in his music, and with a little help from their new friend Bob Dylan and the party supplies he turned them on to, John began looking inward more than he had previously on the band's 4th lp, Beatles for Sale. The album's 2nd track, "I'm A Loser," sees Lennon embracing his trademark wordplay and wit, alternating the idea of a loser as both someone who isn't cool and confident (at least not as he pretends to be) with someone who's lost something, or someone. It's an important song in John's songwriting journey, as the track has that trademark early Beatle excitement, with a first taste of introspection that he begins to master on albums like Help! and Rubber Soul. Another clue to the new direction. Joining us this week is songwriter and musician Hilarie Sidney of The High Water Marks (and formerly of Apples In Stereo). We talk about being born into a Beatles family, life in Norway, hamburger snobs, and the similarities between the Beatles' Apple Corps. and Elephant 6 Recording Collective, which she helped found in the late 80s/early 90s, which gave rise to such indie bands as Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, and her own Apples In Stereo among others. We also talk about her current band The High Water Marks, their new album Proclaimer of Things which came out Feb 4th, and is a fun blast of 60s influenced indie pop rock. This episode features samples of the tracks "Jenny" and "Proclaimer of Things." “Proclaimer Of Things” The co-founder of the legendary Elephant 6 Collective that spawned Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control and her band The Apples In Stereo, Hilarie Sidney has very quietly been one of the most important figures in modern music. By the way, before we continue, I'm sure you're like Neutral Milk Hotel? Cool. Olivia Tremor Control? Cool. The Apples In Stereo? Cool. Yes, all cool for sure, and all massively influential bands. But even cooler? Sidney was the only woman in that gang of dudes. Which is even cooler. Along the way, Sidney fell in love with a Norwegian fella who also was a musician and they joined forces as The High Water Marks, putting out two fabulous albums of engaging indie pop. Sidney moved to Norway thanks to a Study Abroad fellowship to Norway, married that Norwegian fella and put music aside to raise a family, 2020 ended the High Water Marks' hiatus in the form of the fabulous Ecstasy Rhymes album and now two years later, its follow up Proclaimer of Things is ready to go. A blast of hook-laden numbers that careen and roll mightily away with jangling precision and indie rock smarts, Proclaimer of Things is a stirring collection of spry pop anthems thats both spellbinding and rousing. From her home in Norway, Hilaire talks to Alex about culture, music and Viking Music Festivals…. www.thehighwatermarks.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers: The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

This is a special episode of the Intentional Clinician featuring stories and original songs by Paul Krauss MA LPC and his brother Tim Krauss. In this episode you will hear the story of Paul and Tim's upbringing in a MOTEL and how this inspired them to write and record an album over a period of 9 years, which they named "MOTEL." The brothers have a discussion and also play clips of songs that they recorded and reflect on the inspiration for the songs, artistic expression, and the importance of storytelling. This is another episode about music in the sporadic series that the Intentional Clinician has released. Music is in an important part of our lives and our human heritage and we hope you enjoy it. You can purchase a physical or digital copy of MOTEL by clicking here or here. Brothers Paul and Tim Krauss had an unusual childhood to say the very least, they were raised in a Midwest roadside motel and over the last decade they have been composing an album about that experience. It's the stuff of American legends, which begs the question do artistic people create unusual lives or do unusual lives create artists? There is no doubt that growing up around a small town oasis with recurring guests and an ever changing cast of characters will mold your perceptions of life and the world, and these brothers have put that upbringing to music, beautiful, catchy music. MOTEL is a near hour long summary of the years spent at the motor inn, the people and events that shaped them, and the growth that was forced upon them. It's as much a coming of age story as it is a reflection in later life of the place they called home set to an Indie Pop backdrop that captivates the listeners attention from beginning to end. The fifteen songs on the album are a sheer delight for anyone that's a fan of Brian Wilson, Ben Folds, T. Rex, Apples In Stereo, Elephant 6 and music that makes your head bop, your toes tap, your hips swing all while wearing a grin. It's also an amazing journey in storytelling as the brothers recount the innocence of childhood, nostalgia for rainy autumn days, weird goings on at a nearby lake, early experiences with women, their own relationship as siblings and an evening of a possible UFO sighting. They also present vignettes on the strange guests they encountered from a wanted criminal to a charlatan preacher to a Vietnam vet with PTSD who hoards newspapers. The album is filled with singles ready for radio right out of the gate, tunes like "Good Boy Young," "Colorado," and "Captured Light" all of which will punch through your day with sunshine fix. The T. Rex influence on "The Shore," "You're My Brother," and "Jealousy" make for easy rockers to get into that sound like instant classics through nostalgia colored glasses. Meanwhile "Small Town" and "Newspaper Mountains" evoke the best of Ben Folds. That's only half of the album, while the rest will keep you tuned in and your headphones on as the stories of their youth unfold before you. The lyrics are as captivating as the Indie Pop pastiche that surrounds them, with flawless vocals and layers of harmony. While Paul and Tim are the main men behind the music they had a little help from their friends in making MOTEL. Christopher Kennedy (No Volcano, Kingfathand, Colorstore) contributed drums, guitar and bass throughout; Conrad Shock (Conrad Shock and The Noise) laid down some bass, guitar, and banjo; while Dan Julian contributed drums, Sean Maginity played guitar on "Colorado", Jim Rockwood provided drums for "Room 5" and their lead producer, Jupiter Jones helped out with synth, organ, back-up vocals and co-wrote "Room 5" with the brothers. Check in to MOTEL and check it out, the musical journey through time and space is an amazing one for your ears to behold. You'll find yourself singing these songs to yourself, days later and that's when you know you need to spin it again. --This episode discusses the concepts of how growing up in a certain dwelling place and neighborhood shapes one's view of people, of what home is and isn't, long-term projects, art for the sake of expression, and more. Also discussed: the relationship you have with a space and a place. Identity. Music. Art. Pianos. Remembering the same event from two very different perspectives, and more. -- Paul Krauss MA LPC is the Clinical Director of Health for Life Grand Rapids, home of The Trauma-Informed Counseling Center of Grand Rapids. Apologies in advance for the last two thirds of this week's episode, as our time ran out in the back room of The Greyhound, and we were forced to de-camp to John's house, where there was nowhere to set our mics, so we were holding them. This has resulted in a degree of odd noises from us holding the stands. ANYWAY: It's the last episode of this Festival Fest 2018 (Working Title) (Cancelled) mini-season! Once again we are joined by Matt Tyrer and Gordon Kochane, presenting a proposed roster of artists for this distressingly, tragically, and ultimately comically doomed festival. This week, Matt brings us The Apples In Stereo, John supplies a hearty handful of Torres, Mike slaps us about the face with Sunn (((O + Boris, leaving Gordon to invoke dbridge. This was the last thing we recorded for Festival Fest, so see if you can spot the precise point where John finally gave up and succumbed to post-tipsy insensateness. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter & FB: @ayppodcast, and don't forget to check out Mike's Listening Notes! #Music #Podcast #Review #TheApplesInStereo #Torres #SunnOandBoris #dbridge #AwkwardBandsToMakeHashtagsFor #ExceptTorres #TesticleTrauma #CookingWithVenom

If you're familiar with the Elephant Six collective, you'll know there have been several notable bands with a Denver connection to come out of it. In addition to Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples In Stereo and Dressy Bessy, that list includes The Minders, who have since relocated to Portland, Ore. Fronted by Martyn Leaper, The Minders have been fairly quiet in recent years. But the band returned this month with the album "Into The River," which they released the same day they visited our CPR Performance Studio. Leaper and his band played four songs from the new album. He also spoke with Jeremy Petersen about incorporating string parts into the band's music for the first time, how they spent the 10 years since the debut album, and the history behind the Elephant Six collective.
Denver band For Keeps started as a collaboration between co-lead singers Merideth Pryor and Cody Witsken while teaching in China. Now the band is a five-piece that writes fun and light-hearted indie pop. Pryor and Witsken -- now engaged -- and the other three members of For Keeps stopped into the CPR Performance Studio to play some songs from their debut "The People We Let In" as well as some new material. They also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about their self-described "BFF pop," the influence of fellow Denver bands Dressy Bessy and Apples In Stereo and their upcoming acoustic tour in South America.
On this week's show: Soprano Beverly Withers joins us in the studio to discuss thirty years of singing with the Metropolitan Opera, being part of a Motown girl-group, and some comparative listening of a gospel classic. It's time for a brand spankin' new podcast! I had a special guest this week, Chris Hume, director of Red State Road Trip and Red State Road Trip 2. Check them out at redstateroadtrip.com or shootandrun.net. Chris also directed a mini-documentary about the Geological Museum (Shameful self-promotion: I am in it ripping our failed football team and sharing my thoughts on the UW president's benefits.) This week's show featured music from Treepeople, Sonic Youth, The Dead Weather, Superchunk, Tom Waits, The Love Me Nots, Super Furry Animals, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Modest Mouse, and the Angry Malcontent ranted about our space program, and our lack of motivation ("Where's my goddamn hover car?!"). Blue Collar Joe debated Aurora Firestone on health care and got owned by Aurora and the Angry Malcontent. I shared my thoughts on Urbandictionary.com, and, for the first time, we had an unrelated, two-way tie for d-bag of the week! (Note: I referred to Robert Webb as Richard Webb a couple of times. Oops.)Track Listing:"Everything'll Be Alright," Superdrag "Sunday," Sonic Youth "Break My Heart," The Love Me Nots "We've Got to Get Out," Maritime "Running With the Wasters," The Takeover UK "Tidal Wave," The Apples In Stereo "The Ride, Pt. 2," Calexico "Caucasian Blues," Jarvis Cocker "Anenome," The Brian Jonestown Massacre "Only Shallow," My Bloody Valentine "So Far from Your Weapon," The Dead Weather "Jockey Full of Bourbon," Tom Waits "Dramamine," Modest Mouse "Show Your Hand," Super Furry Animals "Car," Built To Spill "Teller," Throwing Muses "In Like Flynn," Girls Against Boys "Nub," The Jesus Lizard "Seven," Sunny Day Real Estate "Grace Cathedral Park," Red House Painters "Slack Motherf*cker," Superchunk "Losing Skin," Seaweed "Andy Warhol," Treepeople "Getting' High for Jesus," Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs
