The second in Bergman's thematic trilogy, WINTER LIGHT is about the silence of God... and whomst amongst us isn't dealing with that these days? This is an incredible film that we hope you watch and enjoy, and while we are two Silly Boys we try out best to approach it seriously and honestly. Most of this episode is Ben ranting and raving about how much he loved the film so be prepared for that. We'll see you next for THE SILENCE... sure to be more silence of God in that one!Follow us @thefranchisees on Instagram and Twitter and email us at thefranchiseespod@gmail.com
From BAD BOYS to the "bad boy" of Swedish cinema... from HUMAN CENTIPEDE to the Spider God... that's right, it's a dark November of the Soul with friend of the pod, future guest(?) Ingmar Bergman.Alex and Ben are tackling some real cinema for a change with Bergman's "Silence of God" trilogy. Wish us luck! Our first film of the series is 1961's THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY. How will the silly boys talk about such a serious film? I'm sure you'll be delighted to find out!Next week we are covering the second film in this thematic trilogy, WINTER LIGHT. HT2053 - Winter Light My favorite time of year to be out photographing is late fall and winter. It's the light that I find so scrumptious. The sun at a low angle, the dramatic weather, and the short, intense daylight hours all combine to create the best time of year to grab the camera and wander.
This is a big one, folks. Paul Schrader's 2017 FIRST REFORMED, a climate-doom riff on WINTER LIGHT and DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST, kicked off a new phase of his career that's still unfolding as we speak. Phases unfold, right? Anyway, to help us unpack both this tremendous work of transcendental cinema and our own crushing despair, we're joined once again by our great friends Aaron and Carlee from the Hit Factory podcast. Is it illegal to describe a bomb vest as a form of prayer? We'll find out together! Originally recorded 14 June 2023 About Bliss Road: In this sometimes funny, often devastating memoir, Martha Engber describes the arduous journey toward discovering the invisible roadblock that ran her life off course: her psychological distress is the result of being the neurotypical daughter of a dad with undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, a condition that affects over 75 million people worldwide. Martha uses personal anecdotes and research about the emergence of ASD as a diagnosis to explain the psychological, emotional and social challenges she faced as a child, then as an adult and parent. Along the way, she shows the sometimes harrowing, but eminently rewarding, route others can follow to chase down the source of their family angst and so reach a more blissful future. Martha Engber is the author of Winter Light, an IPPY Gold Medal Winner in Young Adult Fiction. Her other books include the novels The Falcon, The Wolf and the Hummingbird, and The Wind Thief, and the Resource for Writers, Growing Great Characters from the Ground Up. Felicia is once again joined by Ben Vargas (listen to our episode on Woman in the Dunes) to discuss Ingmar Bergman's story of a priest's inner turmoil in Winter Light (1963). We chat about how timeless Bergman's films are and how the subject matter of questioning one's own faith in not only religion, but humanity and one's own self is relatable to all audiences. Along with how the visual blocking compliments the character's speeches as they unfold on screen. This marks the final film in the Bergman series and it has been such a pleasure revisiting these complex and important pieces of cinema. His filmography is so vast we barely scratched the surface, I promise we'll see Bergman again soon. Send us your thoughts on the episode - which film is your favourite in the trilogy of faith? Secret Movie Club team members Edwin Gomez and Craig Hammill hash out what really IS the criteria that makes a movie a masterpiece? Although they easily agree on JAWS, they split when Edwin calls AIRPORT 77 and KING KONG 1976 masterpieces while Craig views Ingmar Bergman's WINTER LIGHT and PERSONA as masterpieces. Craig also is concerned that the term "masterpiece" gets used way too much these days. He fears the term is losing its important meaning as an indicator of a movie that truly rises above all others. Is there a fix? Is there a problem? Listen to see where Edwin and Craig ultimately land. We'd love to hear your thoughts. (You can always write us at: community@secretmovieclub.com. We might even read your comments in an upcoming pod!).

Our lineup in this issue includes the third volume of their benefit compilation of Various Artists From Ukraine, now 19 months since Russia invaded with no end in sight. Ambient space music, performed by David Luxton, was inspired by astronomy and celestial themes. His mission is to make transcendent music from the inner and outer worlds. Modular synthesis Ombre Cohen experimenting with semi-modular synths and an ever-growing Euro rack case. The latest addition to the Winter-Light's artist roster, a new ambient drone project, is created by Dan Barrett, a.k.a. Aetherium Nebula. His primary focus is manifesting atmospheres inspired by the intersection of sadness, spirituality and far-future cyberpunk science fiction. With her love of Africa, Lis Addison uses electronics, voices, and nature sounds on the album, which are intended to blend equally into the music the way all beings work harmoniously in an ecosystem for its health and benefit, and our vintage track from Harvey Bainbridge surfs the ambience of deep space music, just a few of the varied genre of sounds you will hear. Today's guest deejay is Mark O'Shea, founder of Winter-Light, a label specializing in ambient, experimental, and drone soundscapes. Winter-Light kept turning up in my life. Musicians for the label would appear in mixes from guest deejays on Soundwave, or I listen to on Spotify. After hearing Electronic Death Black Dogs' Hinterland album and discovering it was yet another excellent release from Winter-Light, I took it as a hint from the universe that I should invite the label's founder to guest deejay on Soundwave. Mark's mix is fantastic, and while most of it is new to me (always a delight), there were some tracks my musicians I'm quite fond of. Kloob made two appearances in Mark's mix and was a guest deejay on Soundwave back in 2021. And RNGMNN? Wow, that takes me back to an inspired mix I did in 2008! And Hessel Veldman shared an enthralling mix on Soundwave just last year. Everyone who appears in Mark's mix are new favorites. And I hope they are for you, too. Today's guest deejay is Aidan Baker. I came across Aidan on one of my deep dives on Bandcamp and was struck by his music. Aidan, a Canadian musician currently residing in the creative hub of Berlin, has an impressive repertoire that spans solo work and collaborations with notable groups like Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble, and WERL Baker's musical ingenuity is particularly evident in his experimental guitar playing style, which draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, including Caspar Brötzmann, James Plotkin, Steve Albini, and Justin Broadrick. It's a pleasure to have him curate this episode's mix, a captivating compilation that showcases his unique musical sensibilities. Want to hear more beautiful music? Just last week, Aidan released his new album, Tense Surfaces. I've been listing to it while I write today's show notes while an ocean breeze wafts its way through my windows. It's a lovely experience. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Mark O'Shea of the Winter-Light music label. See you then. Hmmm, what kind of mix do you think this one might be. I believe the gaudy cover art gives it away. This is essentially a continuation of my "Simply Ambient" series. A nice, straightforward mix of new ambient tunes. I got tired of coming up with variations of "simply ambient" such as absolutely ambient, purely ambient, totally ambient, etc. So I decided to ripoff the over-the-top "Now That's What I Call Music" series. I'm not sure if, like that series, I'll keep adding numbers to each mix so that I end up with "Now That's What I Call Ambient Vol. 84". The Portland Winter Light Festival is a city-wide event that illuminates what is often the darkest month of the year with art installations that can truly be called “lit.” The Willamette Light Brigade, a non-profit arts organization, launched the free event nearly a decade ago at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. It quickly spread across the Willamette River into downtown and now features light-based art pieces and performances in neighborhoods all over the city. This year's theme is “The Light of Stars.” We talk with artist Tyler FuQua about his work and his commission from the festival: a gigantic, lighted robot in downtown called “Mechan 42: Space Explorer.”

In an effort to get into the festive spirit, we will be releasing a series of holiday themed podfics in the coming weeks leading up to Christmas! For episode 18.1, Evi reads "Winter Light Spectacular" by reminiscingintherain. ‘Coming Soon! Winter Light Spectacular! Starting Friday 11th December, 5pm, Golden Botanic Gardens. Entry free.' Louis blinked as she read the poster in the staff room. “Uhh… what is this?” she asked, looking around with a raised eyebrow. ~~~~ When head gardener Louis has the plans of a light show dropped in her lap, she's instantly protective of her gardens. Can coordinator Harry change her mind?
The Montana winter isn't the only thing ice-cold and unrelenting in God's Country, directed by newcomer Julian Higgins and starring Thandiwe Newton. We've got Vulture's TV critic and film writer Roxana Hadadi along to unpack all that this indie is bringing us. Director Julian Higgins discusses his new film, God's Country, with fellow director Chloe Okuno in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, Higgins discusses pulling off night exteriors on a small budget, the year hiatus during production, and the power of an impassioned letter. Based on a James Lee Burke's short story "Winter Light" and his own short film of the same name, Higgins' feature tells the story of a college professor who finds herself drawn into an escalating battle of wills after she confronts two hunters who claim they're just passing through. Please note: spoilers are included. See photos and a summary of this event below: https://www.dga.org/Events/2022/November2022/GodsCountry_QnA_0922.aspx
We're all Golden Eagles here. Gemma is away on festival assignment, so filling in for her we've got Letterboxd senior editor and Weekend Watchlist co-host Mitchell Beaupre! Slim and Mitchell are joined by Julian Higgins, director and co-writer of God's Country—his neo-Western debut feature which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and is hitting theaters September 16 from IFC Films. We also dive deep into Julian's four favorite films: Rashomon, Chimes at Midnight, The Return and Foxcatcher. Plus: Julian growing up with college professor cinephile parents; why he's never seen a single Star Wars movie (hint: those two things are related); why is everyone in Rashomon sweating so much?; Toshiro Mifune is the last 30 seconds of a bag of Skittles; Slim (still) isn't a Shakespeare person; the relentless pursuit of making a juicy period epic; going “full on Orson Welles”; Thandiwe Newton having bigger balls than Slim; “We all gotta play by the same rules if this is gonna work”; Julian being afraid of reading reviews from writers he loves; Mitchell watching Foxcatcher in the heart of Du Pont country; rich people can get away with anything; ornithologist, philatelist, philanthropist; nostalgia for HD DVD and how they made Slim's dad cry and Julian's childhood hero Basil Rathbone. Credits: This episode was recorded in Los Angeles, Delaware and Pennsylvania, and edited by Slim. Facts by Jack. Booker: Brian Formo. Transcript by Sophie Shin. Art by Samm. The first of Autumn's DaysDawn, the crouching eyes of wings and black, over the last of summer darkness, the stars swallowed in the emptying, the blackness of a fading blue, and to the west and east, in front of the ragged ships of a worn and forgotten sky, lightening flickers and fades, flickers and fades, crashing in sheets of power and steel, the metallic thunder of igniting fields and hedges, woodlands and rooftops, the hidden raptures of illumination, the shattering of shadows, the race of time and turning, the fading memories of summer, the fallen wings, the ravens ravenous, remember and with rancour the birth of the first of autumn's days.
Welcome back TWGTF faithful to a very special apology episode of the show! This week Ben wishes to make amends with his partner Tyler for the mean trick of Eternals a few weeks back! As a sign of an olive branch Ben has picked out two certified classics or as we say on the show pure Tyler bait! In this episode, I've got reviews of the new film from Wes Anderson, The French Dispatch, and the latest from Edgar Wright, Last Night in Soho. After that, we start a new series called "The Art of Deconstruction: Faith, Doubt & Film." In this series, guests come on the show, talk about the evolution of their religious life, and select a film that has been meaningful to them during spiritual transition. Most guests are "ex-vangelicals," meaning they have moved away from evangelicalism towards something else. My first guest is Andrew Bowcock, a filmmaker and exvangelical friend of mine who shares his story of religious deconstruction during college. He selected Ingmar Bergman's wonderful film Winter Light, which depicts a pastor struggling with his belief in God. The film is amazing, and the conversation with Andrew is too. This week I just barely dip my toe into exploring the difference between Jung and Freud. With the upcoming Peterson vs Zizek debate, I'm interested in unpacking what I've learned so far ... which admittedly isn't much. Any input is much appreciated.
Nate and Matt are buried in snow, so why not chat about "Winter Light," Ingmar Bergman's favorite film? Matt's first feature "Cotopaxi" is streaming on Amazon Prime. Shameless plug.
