So many of us got bitten by the outdoor gardening bug last year and learned there is no better way to connect with the food we eat.. then by growing it. My passion for growing edible plants has grown, like my space has. My first garden was a tiny box full of herbs and one tomato plant on our tiny balcony three years ago, and since then, the balcony containers grew, and now I’m excited to be in our first home with acres to farm this summer. Starting these edible plants from seed has been a bit intimidating, but in my efforts to continue growing as a plant parent, I’m ready to take the plunge and dive in. Starting from seed offers us the ability to be in control of the varieties we grow, plan in advance and save lots of money in the long run. My dear friend and mentor Joe Lamp’l- the "joe behind joe gardener" is the king of organic gardening and has an amazing seed starting course launching this week and was kind enough to stop by and give us the inside scoop on seed starting basics, and inspire us to deepen our curiosity about where food comes from and empower us to grow it ourselves. If this episode or topic inspires you... join me in Joe's 2021 Master Seed Starting Course! Enrollment is only a week long and closes February 2nd, 2021!  Use my affiliate link here and get access to the private zoom call with Joe and Myself specifically for our  Bloom and Grow Community! We will have the call in March, after we have all binged the course, and troubleshoot our specific questions with Joe and grow as a community together! In this episode we learn: [00:00:10] Maria shares her favorite experiences and benefits of seed starting [00:02:11] Where to get the best seeds for your spring and summer gardens this year [00:06:20] Joe demystifies seed starting and why you shouldn’t be nervous about starting your own garden! ‘Growing a Greener World’ Host Joe Lamp'l Shares Fall Gardening Tips

Today's Homeowner Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2020 17:16

In this special Today’s Homeowner Podcast, we’re talking gardening with Joe Lamp’l, AKA Joe Gardener. He’s the host of the Emmy Award-winning “Growing a Greener World” series on PBS and runs joegardener.com. This podcast is sponsored by Exmark, which knows you want to worry less about lawn maintenance and focus on enjoying that lawn, so they’ve created the website Backyard Life. Check it out to learn how you can maximize your outdoor lifestyle. Why You Should Teach Kids to Garden Now, more than ever, is a great time for kids to be outside, as opposed to being glued to a TV screen or mobile device. Planting a seed and watching its transformation in just a couple of days is a wonderful learning experience. When kids plant a seed and watch its progress, they quickly learn that a tomato doesn’t just come from the grocery store. It comes from a plant that they can help grow and, eventually, enjoy the fruits of their labor. Those lessons carry through adulthood, when many people often decide to grow their own fruit and vegetables to live a more self-sufficient, sustainable and economical lifestyle. What You Should Grow in the Fall Fall is here, and if you’re looking to grow something, Joe says there are plenty of options. The “Growing a Greener World” host recommends planting leafy crops. While fruits require full sun, and a lot of it, a fall garden is much more forgiving, and that means there are many more garden-to-table options. Some of Joe’s favorite things to grow in the fall are lettuce, arugula, spinach, kale, peas, collards, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and garlic. The Importance of Testing Soil and Composting But before you head to the garden center to purchase seeds, first take a soil test. The results will tell you not just the nutrients you will need to improve the soil, but also what you don’t need to add. For instance, people often think of fertilizer as a good thing, but Joe says there is such a thing as ‘too much of a good thing.’ A soil test’s results will take the guesswork out of gardening and provide the information you need for optimal growth. Once you have that information, you can continue toward a greener lifestyle. Composting is one way to amend and improve soil with poor drainage, the “Growing a Greener World” host says. To Mulch or Not to Mulch Mulch adds a protective blanket over exposed soil; this keeps the good soil intact, so Joe is a huge fan of mulch, and he recommends keeping it year-round. While it’s true that insects spend much of their time in mulch for the winter, just about 3 percent of those hiding insects are pests. So, the rest are beneficial or neutral, which means you don’t have to worry about providing shelter for harmful insects. Joe clears up another gardening myth as well, which suggests fall is a good time to prune or trim trees. When you prune, you’re stimulating the tree and activating new growth, but that’s exactly what you don’t want to do coming into the cold season. The “Growing a Greener World” host says it’s best to resist the urge to do this work in the fall, and wait for full dormancy, around mid-winter or early spring. Listen to the podcast for more tips from Joe Lamp’l. Between my podcast listeners, social media channels, and members of my Online Gardening Academy™, I receive a lot of gardening questions. This week on the podcast, I am answering some of those questions from members of the joegardener® Facebook group.  I’ve invited Erin, my Director of Online Media, to return as co-host for this gardening Q&A episode we're calling Ask Me Anything. In this episode, we're answering your gardening questions. So let’s get started!

Fair warning: This week, you’re in for a bit of a rant. I’m sharing with you my top 10 gardening pet peeves. No, I don’t mean those things like finding some pest has taken a bite out of an almost perfectly ripe fruit (although, that drives us all crazy too). I mean the human behavior I see far too often that is harmful to the garden, the environment or the gardener.

Most of us set out to do just that. But what happens when you see pests munching on your crops? Do you ignore them? Look up a homemade "organic" pesticide? Purchase one from the store? Or are you tempted to throw in the towel and find the strongest pesticide on the home market?   We all want a healthy garden but are faced with those questions when insects come to our gardens. It always helps to talk to successful organic gardeners and ask what works. But I wanted to go a step further.   In this episode of the Beginner's Garden Podcast, I asked Joe Lamp'l about not only his personal practices but also which organic pesticides he recommends and how to use them.     SHOW NOTES:   Other Episodes with Joe Lamp’l:   Tomato Troubleshooting: https://journeywithjill.net/gardening/2019/07/02/troubleshooting-tomato-plant-problems-with-joe-lampl/   Irrigation Best Practices: https://journeywithjill.net/gardening/2019/07/09/garden-irrigation-best-practices-with-joe-lampl/   Organic Fertilizer Options:   Find Joe here: https://joegardener.com/   Joe’s Podcast: Joe Gardener Show   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joegardener/   Online Gardening Academy including his new course: Mastering Pests, Diseases, and Weeds https://organicgardeningacademy.com/p/master-pests-diseases-weeds       Earlier podcast episodes: https://journeywithjill.net/podcast   Raised Bed Templates: https://journeywithjill.net/shop     (*links below contain affiliate links, which means if you click through and make a purchase, we will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.)     Special thanks to our sponsor, Good Ideas, Inc. For this week's episode, I invited my Director of Online Media back to join me for another Q&A session. We haven't done a Q&A episode in awhile. Our talks are always fun, and it gives Erin an opportunity to ask me some of the most popular questions that have come in from our community of listeners and viewers over the past few months, around what's going on these days at the GardenFarm™.

Heirloom Seed – an old cultivar that is "still maintained by gardeners and farmers particularly in isolated or ethnic communities". These may have been commonly grown during earlier periods in human history, but are not used in modern large-scale agriculture Organic - have been produced entirely through organic practices by a certified organic operation. In order to be sold as such, they must be produced by such a facility which has been certified by an accredited government agency - Hybrid – the deliberate crossing of two different parent varieties from the same species. A hybrid can be produced organically. This does not mean genetically modified. We recommend heirloom and organic varieties. We find this produces the best vegetables that best adapt to the environment that they are in. F1 and F2 Seeds This will result in the hybrid seeds the breeders are after, and they're known as “F1” seeds, or first generation seeds. F1 seeds will be the most stable of any seeds that follow it in future generations, and those generations will be known as “F2” seeds, “F3” seeds, and so forth as more seeds are made Gmo seeds Genetically modified crops are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified using genetic engineering methods. In most cases, the aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur naturally in the species Note: You can not buy GMO seeds for you garden In segment two Joey and Holly ask the question how effective is companion plating? https://www.gardenmyths.com/companion-planting-truth-myth/ author Robert Pavlis Here is what the definition is for companion planting Companion planting in gardening and agriculture is the planting of different crops in proximity for any of a number of different reasons, including pest control, pollination, providing habitat for beneficial insects, maximizing use of space, and to otherwise increase crop productivity And that is one of the problems with this topic. There is no single accepted definition. If we can’t agree on what it is, how can we debate its existence? I’ve taken a definition from the North American Permaculture Magazine, and modified it to include the case where only one plant receives a benefit; “a type of polyculture, where two or more plant types are grown together because at least one of them shows improved growth due to the presence of the others.” No scientific proof that companion planting If I plant some corn and climbing beans together, the corn provides structure for the beans to climb up and that is good for the beans. This example is quite clear and it certainly demonstrates that companion planting works. Lettuce likes to grow cool and by mid summer it needs extra shade to stay cool or it bolts. Planting it behind larger tomato plants provides a cooler environment. Again a good example of companion planting that works. It is kind of pointless to have a debate about whether or not companion planting works – I just gave two examples to show it does work. The problem is that just because it works in these two cases does not mean that the hundreds of other examples also work. Planting marigolds to reduce root knot nematodes is a very common suggestion. It does work, provided that you match the right species of marigold with your crop, and you first grow the marigold and then in the same season immediately follow it with the crop, something only possible in warm climates. For this reason it does not work for most gardeners. Most of the examples of companion planting promoted for gardeners have NOT been tested. The reality is that research money is tight and when it is available, it will be used for agricultural situations – not home gardens. Most suggestions have no scientific basis. Many times it is just stuff made up to sell advertising, sell a book or promote an individuals idea. I had a look at one of the books that made this topic very popular; Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte. It contains absolutely no scientific evidence for the claims and most combinations don’t even have logical explanations as to why they work – they just do. And yet those claims have been repeated millions of times as if they are fact. Is segment three Joey and Holly talk with their guest Joe Lamp'l https://joegardener.com/ https://www.growingagreenerworld.com/ As one of the country’s most recognized and trusted personalities in gardening and green-living, that passion for living a greener life is evident to a nationwide audience who watches Joe Lampl in his current role as Creator, Executive Producer and Host of the multi-award-winning PBS series, Growing a Greener World. What are a few tips you can share when it comes to pick out and buying plants. 5.. Let talk about your show that is how most know you from, the show Growing A Greener world has been around for 10 seasons now. In those 10 seasons what has been a couple your personal wow moments? People you have met or what they have done with their world or place you have been to? 6. Where can people find more about you ? In segment four Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions" Q: Would you grow Strawberry and or Blue berries in containers Q: When is a good time to start seed in zone 4? when can I uncover my buried rose bush? when can I prune my Lilacs and climbing rose and fruit trees? A: Starting seeds indoors is based on the your last average frost date so search growing zone with your zip code, 12 weeks before for peppers, onions leeks, tomatoes 8 weeks, brassicas 6 weeks, When to uncover your roses It is simply when the danger of freezing and thawing has passed so not yet it may be mid April or later when you will do this in zone 4. Pruning lilacs n early spring, before the buds open (April), or After the leaves have fallen in autumn (September, October) Lilacs form flower buds at the tips of branches during the previous growing season. This means that it is important to prune just under the panicles a week or two after the plant has finished blooming. If you prune the branch tips heavily or after the flower buds have formed, you will have fewer blooms next year. For the climbing roses time to prune is from autumn and through winter, while the rose is dormant. For your fruit trees early spring before buds break and trees are still dormant. Q:Is it best to germinate seeds before planting or do they work just as well without soaking? Q: Has anybody use coffee grounds as mulch around tomato plants? listen to a podcast yesterday and they were talking about how good this is for tomatoes A: Coffee grounds contain about 2% N and less then 1% of P and K. You need to work them in the ground in order to get they NPK. It is a great food for worms and to build up the organic matter in your garden. Using coffee grounds as mulch is not good as it forms a hard covering over the soil and prevents water from getting to the plant it acts much like a brick on mulch on the soil Q: I just started seeds and now I have tiny flies all around the soil is this normal and what should I do? A: Those are Fungus gnats normal in all soil 2 things that you can do one spray them with soapy water and 2 sprinkle cinnamon over the soil, just a dusting is contains anti fungal properties and will help keep what gates that are not dead away Q: How many pole beans plants can you plant in a 5 gall bucket? How many Bush beans per 5 gallon bucket? Thanks A: you can get 9 bush bean in a 5 gallon bucket and 8 pole beans this if calculated by the square foot gardening method and a buck is approx 1 sq foot. Q: if my potatoes have sprouted from last year harvest but they are small will I still get good sized potatoes this year. A: It is hard to say you really want a seed potato to be no smaller then a medium size chicken egg. With yours I would remove all the sprouts but one and plant them so they can focus its energy to the one sprout The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener Radio Show from March – Oct weekly Heard on Joy 1340 AM & 98.7 FM Milwaukee, WI Saturday mornings 7-8 AM CST http://player.listenlive.co/41841 Heard on WAAM 1600 AM & 92.7 FM Ann Arbor, MI Sundays 7-8 AM EST https://tinyurl.com/p68cvft Heard on KDIZ 1570 AM Minneapolis, MN Saturdays 4-5 PM and replay Sundays 2-3 PM CST http://player.listenlive.co/57071 Heard on KFEQ 680 AM at 107.9 FM St. Joseph/Kansas City, MO Sundays 10-11 AM CST http://www.680kfeq.com/live-stream/ Heard on WRMN 1410 AM & 96.7 FM Elgin/Chicago, IL Sundays Noon-1 PM CST https://www.wrmn1410.com/ Heard on KYAH 540 AM Delta/Salt Lake City, UT Saturdays 1-2 PM MST Reply Sundays 9-10 PM MST https://www.yahradio540.com/listen-live/ Heard on KMET 1490 AM & 98.1 FM Banning, CA Tuesdays 9 - 10 AM PST April – Oct https://www.kmet1490am.com/ Heard on WCRN 830 AM Westborough/Boston, MA Saturdays 10-11 AM EST https://tunein.com/radio/WCRN-AM-830-Full-Service-Radio-s1112/ Heard on WOGO 680 AM & 103.1 FM Chippewa Falls, WI Sundays 9-10 AM CST https://www.christiannetcast.com/listen/player.asp?station=wogo-am Check out https://thewisconsinvegetablegardener.com/ Email your questions to Gardentalkradio@gmail.com Or call 24/7 leave your question at 1-800 927-SHOW Power Planter of www.powerplanter.com Proplugger of www.proplugger.com World's coolest rain gauge Rootmaker of www.rootmaker.com Us coupon code TWVG at checkout and save 10% of your order Tomato snaps of www.tomatosnaps.com Chapin Manufacturing Inc. of www.chapinmfg.com Pomona pectin of www.pomonapectin.com Iv organics of www.ivorganics.com Dr. JimZ of www.drjimz.com Seed Savers Exchange of www.seedsavers.org Waterhoop of www.waterhoop.com Green Gobbler of www.greengobbler.com Nessalla koombucha of www.nessalla.com MI Green House LLC of www.migreenhouse.com Spartan mosquito of www.spartanmosquito.com Phyllom BioProducts of www.phyllombioproducts.com Happy leaf led of www.happyleafled.com Neptunes harvest of www.neptunesharvest.com Dripworks of www.dripworks.com We Grow Indoors of www.wegrowindoors.com Harvestmore of www.harvest-more.com Deer defeat www.deerdefeat.com Blue ribbon organics of www.blueribbonorganics.com Bluemel's garden & landscape center of www.bluemels.com Milwaukee,WI official garden center of the show Chip Drop of https://getchipdrop.com/?ref=wisconsinvegetable
