Jack Lampl graduated from Harvard in 1973 and has been dominantly involved in the nonprofit sector for the last thirty years. During that time, he has worked as a community mediator and president of two national nonprofits. The Threshold Foundation is a progressive philanthropic fund for wealthy donors. The AK Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems advances a methodology for studying the unconscious dynamics of groups. He now consults with various nonprofits, and psychological and religious organizations, pro bono for the most part, and is a non-ST board member of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center. Robert and Jack seamlessly weave their conversation around topics of psycho-politics, diversity, race, and inequity. These factors have effects on each of us that are both conscious and unconscious. Some unseen parts of our behavior often do not serve our best interests. This conversation is both insightful and introspective of Jack Lampl's journey on an unusual life and someone who exemplifies a psycho-political relationship with the world. The main point of this episode is to support you to get a clearer glimpse of your most sensitive self, and to expand your trust in your capacity to be of support to our troubled world.  It also can serve as an inspiration to develop your friendships to support what is most treasured inside you. Localized Chemogenetic Silencing of Inhibitory Neurons: A novel Mouse Model of Focal Cortical Seizures

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.11.04.367862v1?rss=1 Authors: Goldenberg, A. M., Schmidt, S., Mitelman, R., Rubi Levy, D., Katz, Y., Yizhar, O., Beck, H., Lampl, I. Abstract: Focal cortical epilepsies are frequently refractory to available anticonvulsant drug therapies. One key factor contributing to this state is the limited availability of animal models that allow to reliably study focal cortical seizures and how they recruit surrounding brain areas in-vivo. In this study, we selectively expressed the inhibitory chemogenetic receptor, hM4D, in GABAergic neurons in focal cortical areas using viral gene transfer. Following focal silencing of GABAergic neurons by administration of Clozapine-N-Oxide (CNO), we demonstrated reliable induction of local epileptiform events in the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal of awake freely moving mice. Experiments in anesthetized mice showed consistent induction of focal seizures in two different brain regions - the barrel cortex (BC) and at the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Seizures were accompanied by high frequency oscillations, a known characteristic of human focal seizures. Seizures propagated, but an analysis of seizure propagation revealed favored propagation pathways. CNO-induced epileptiform events propagated from the BC on one hemisphere to its counterpart and from the BC to the mPFC, but not vice-versa. Lastly, post-CNO epileptiform events in the BC could be triggered by sensory whisker-pad stimulation, indicating that this model, applied to sensory cortices, may be useful to study sensory-evoked seizures. Taken together, our results show that targeted chemogenetic inhibition of GABAergic neurons using hM4D can serve as a novel, versatile and reliable model of focal cortical epilepsy suitable to systematically study cortical ictogenesis in different cortical areas. Problem: Local financial institutions don’t have the access to resources or multiple branches that a larger bank like JPMorgan has. So, usually, local community lenders find a niche, and double down on 1 type of lending products. But, that creates at least 2 problems: An over concentration in geography An over concentration in 1 lending product So Ian Lampl stepped in, and by comparing lending to the bond market, LoanStreet was born. On this episode, Ian tells us all about his end-to-end lending platform that 600 local financial institutions are already falling in love with.  What we talked about: Community lenders had 2 problems: geography & product Most people thought ‘matching’ would solve the issue The problem wasn’t ‘matching.’ The issue was infrastructure How LoanStreet modeled their loan platform after the bond market LoanStreet’s platform is actually better than the bond market’s standardization model  Example LoanStreet in action To ensure that you never miss an episode of Payments Innovation, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, or here.  Until next time!

Sir Peter Lampl is a philanthropist who has given over £50 million and worked for 20 years to combat educational inequality. In 1997 he founded the Sutton Trust with the aim of improving social mobility. The Trust has funded over 200 research studies, and it initiates and supports a wide range of programmes, covering everything from early years education to access to the professions. The son of a Viennese émigré, Peter Lampl grew up in modest circumstances in Yorkshire until the age of 11, when his family relocated to Surrey. He attended grammar schools, Oxford University and the London Business School. He worked as a management consultant and businessman in the USA and Europe, and in 1983 he set up the Sutton Company, an international private equity firm. His first move into philanthropy came in the wake of the Dunblane school shootings in 1996, when he funded the campaign which led to a complete ban on the private ownership of handguns in the UK. His interest in social mobility was sparked by his realisation that in recent years "a kid like me had little chance of making it to Oxbridge", noting that his school was now "all fee-paying" and his Oxford college "used to have lots of ordinary Welsh kids, but they're not coming through any more."He received an OBE in 2000 for services to Access to Higher Education, and was knighted in June 2003.
