In this special collaboration with NephMadness, we're diving into the world of nephrotoxins with an expert panel from Virginia Commonwealth University. NephMadness is an educational competition modeled after March Madness, and this year, one of the featured regions focuses on plant-based nephrotoxins. Together, with our expert panel we break down the competing nephrotoxin teams: Tubular Toxins vs. Oxalate Offenders. Joining us are Dr. Anna Vinnokova (Nephrologist), Dr. Rachel Khan PharmD (Neph pharmacist), Dr. Ethan Downes (Nephrology fellow), and the legendary nephrotoxicologist, Dr. Josh King (Board certified Nephrologist and Toxicologist). We ALMOST named this episode "Getting Downe with the Mad Neph King and the Bean Queens"... but we didn't, your welcome. Chris Rongey and Amy Marxkors provide an update on the E. coli outbreak linked to leafy greens that has expanded to seven states. Jory Lange, Food Safety Attorney with the Lange Law Firm, joins the conversation to discuss the ongoing investigation. Whole genome sequencing confirms the E. coli strain is identical across states, implicating a common supplier. Lange explains that Andre's Banquet and Catering, which served the contaminated lettuce, will be held liable but can seek compensation from the supplier. He also emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability for businesses involved in such incidents
This episode of the Soil Health Labs podcast delves into the importance of peer learning among farmers, innovative approaches to soil health, and the implementation of climate-smart practices through the Climate-Smart Grown in SC Program out of Clemson and SC State Universities. Featuring insights from Dr. Lacy Barnette, this episode explores how collaboration, community support, and scientific research drive sustainable agricultural practices. From as early as middle school, Dr. Lacy Barnette was interested in sustainable agriculture. She made the very wise decision of getting her PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from us right here in the Soil Health Lab and has since moved into a position as an Extension Associate at Clemson University where she is a part of the Leafy Greens program of their Climate-Smart Grown in SC project. This Climate-Smart program is a USDA-funded initiative aimed at sustainable practices in four main crops: leafy greens, forage, peanuts, and forestry. In this interview, Dr. Barnette emphasizes the benefits of farmers observing and learning from their peers in implementing effective soil health techniques, and the importance of making scientific research relevant and actionable for farmers, particularly in South Carolina. Dr. Barnette also discusses strategies for leafy green farmers to adopt cover cropping, reduce tillage, and approaches to mulching to enhance soil health. She also touches on market influences and policy barriers that may hinder farmers from adopting perennial systems. In all, it's important to plug oneself into a broad and supportive community, one that is involved in supporting one another's agricultural growth and, preferably, policy that supports regenerative agriculture.Dr. Barnette discusses the many varying and visible benefits of cover cropping, such as improved soil health/productivity and pest deterrent. She goes on to discuss some of the common issues some leafy green farmers may face in cover cropping. Diamondback Moths have posed a threat to some crops, for which Dr. Barnett offers some possible remedies, such as compost tea generated from plant matter of surrounding forests.Lastly, she discusses the Initial challenges and logistical hurdles in the first year of the Climate Smart SC Program, and anticipated improvements for the second year, including summer cover crops.Links and ResourcesClemson Extension Climate Smart Program: https://www.climatesmartsc.org/Rodale Institute: https://rodaleinstitute.org

The posed shot is at Anakeesta Mountaintop Adventure Park in Gatlinburg, where we played on St. Patrick's Day. Taking our Irish Celtic music high up in the Great Smoky Mountains to entertain for the holiday was most fitting and special. And while the howling wind and blowing rain were less than pleasant, they gave us the sense of actually being in Ireland! Thanks again for writing, and for all you do for Celtic musicians! We love your show." Sean Malloy of Band o'Brothers emailed a photo: "Hey Marc! Happy Belated Birthday & St. Patrick's Day! Hope you had a wonderful time and a wonderful gig with your daughters. Attached is a picture of Band O'Brothers as we prepared to roll through the streets of New Haven in the St. Patrick's Day parade. We had a blast playing out songs for the joyful people along the parade route, and after we completed the parade route we even stopped our float outside a neighborhood bar to play a few songs for the revelers. We had a great day!"

I love growing leafy greens. You get a yield faster than root and fruit crops, they don't require as much sunlight as other crops, and best of all you can use them in a variety of dishes, from salads to broths. In this episode, Instagram gardener Michael Homan comes on the show to teach us his tricks of the trade to grow abundant leafy green veg easily, whether you're growing from seed or you're buying seedlings at your local nursery. One of those tricks is to get your fertilising right. We recommend using Charlie Carp fish emulsion fertiliser on the leaves, and their organic pellets in the soil, which will give a full-spectrum, nitrogen-rich feed that will have your plants exploding with growth.EPISODE LINKSCharlie Carp's website: https://www.charliecarp.com.au/Where to buy: https://www.charliecarp.com.au/contact-us/where-to-buy/Charlie Carp's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/charlie-carp/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100053685173196Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/charlie.carp/Search for horticulture jobs: HortPeople.comFOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIATwitter: @PlantsGrowHere / Facebook: @PlantsGrowHerePodcast - Join our Facebook group!VISIT OUR WEBSITEwww.PlantsGrowHere.comLET'S WORK TOGETHERAre you in the industry or an enthusiast with something of value to share?
