It's not just about knowing exactly what the diagnosis is, what treatment to provide, or in what dosage. In order to optimize a patient's health, we must go beyond that. Whether you are a medical doctor, physical therapist, acupuncturist, or any other clinician that offers care to patients, there is a deeper level to patient centered care that involves mindset, communication and empathy. By becoming cognizant of this as healthcare practitioners, we can not only serve our patients better, but we can also gain more satisfaction from our work.John Woolf is our guest today, tackling this very interesting conversation. He is a physical therapist and athletic trainer who is currently completing a PhD in Performance Psychology.  His journey from physical medicine into psychology was inspired by a desire to better understand the influence of the patient-provider relationship. He is the CEO of Patient Success Systems, a company that provides training and consulting to improve clinical outcomes through patient connection and engagement. John additionally offers services in executive coaching, working with several business owners who are keeping a lot of plates spinning. This is Part I of a live interview I did with John Woolf in our group "Mindful Clinicians." I apologize for the audio, which was a little rough on my end, especially in the first half of the interview. In this Communication Series, the goal is to help guide clinicians to more effective ways of thinking about and relating to patients. One of the things that just isn't discussed in great detail in physical therapy is communication - and how aspects of how our interaction with the patient can impact the outcome of our treatment. In this episode, I interviewed John Woolf, PT, PhD(c), ATC, COMT. John has an interesting story. He started out as the head athletic trainer and sports medicine for the University of Arizona and ending up doing a PhD in psychology. A lot of his expertise centers around communicating with patients within a relationship-centered model of care. In this episode, we cover everything from relationship-centered care to narrative medicine to motivational interviewing. ______________________________Join our community on Facebook, Mindful Clinicians to hear more of these interviews as they occur.

On March 23, 1844, General Tom Thumb, just 25 inches tall, entered the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace and bowed low to Queen Victoria. On both sides of the Atlantic, this meeting marked a tipping point in the nineteenth century, and the age of the freak was born. Bewitching all levels of society, it was a world of curiosities and astonishing spectacle—of dwarfs, giants, bearded ladies, Siamese twins, and swaggering showmen. But the real stories—human dramas that so often eclipsed the fantasy presented on the stage—of the performing men, women and children, have been forgotten or marginalized in the histories of the very people who exploited them. In this richly evocative account, John Woolf uses a wealth of recently discovered material to bring to life the sometimes tragic, sometimes triumphant, always extraordinary stories of people who used their (dis)abilities and difference to become some of the first international celebrities. He talks about famous performers such as Tom Thumb (Charles Stratton) and the greatest showman P.T. Barnum. He explains how the meeting between General Tom Thumb and Queen Victoria brought the freak performers and shows into mainstream entertainment of the day. He also discusses the early fascination with little people and others with abnormalities, such as Jeffrey Hudson who was in the court of Charles I of England. Woolf covers several additional freak performers such as Chang and Eng, Joice Heth, Maximo and Bartola, the WhatIsIt and the influence Charles Darwin's research had on the freak shows of the age. He explains the life of the Elephant Man (Joseph Merrick) and how exploitation led to the decline of popularity of the shows. Matt Esrick, DPT is a “long-time listener” and reached out to me regarding some of the content of the podcast. Matt’s a new clinic owner (less than a year) and, although he has an MBA, he still has some issues that he has to deal with – marketing, building relationships with physicians, and establishing himself in a crowded marketplace. John Woolf, PT has been a recent guest. When I told him about Matt’s situation, he asked if we could talk to Matt about some of his issues and just push “record.” I thought, “Great idea!” Here is the recording of our conversation. Matt was willing to share a little about his practice and the issues he’s having, and was kind enough to listen to the advice and feedback we were willing to provide. My challenge to you, the listener, while listening, consider how you would coach Matt. As you scale, you will need to coach others – directors, VPs, supervisors, PTs. Start developing your coaching ears and consider what you would do/say to help someone in Matt’s situation as if he was your employee. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! John Woolf, PT, is out to change healthcare and not with any amazing technical breakthroughs. Rather, John is determined to change the practitioner’s mindset and redirect their focus on the patient (not their evidence-based care they provide) and aligning with the patient. By doing so, John has learned that patients are more engaged in their therapy – attending their PT sessions, following instructions, decreasing the cancellation rates, staying with their therapy/therapist, and completing their Plan of Care! Optimal outcomes are thus more often seen when the provider is focused foremost on their relationship with the patient and not the care they provide. Today, we get to talk about one aspect of developing that relationship – solution-based language – focusing our questions and discussions on the solutions and not the problem that is presented. Welcome to episode 24 where we continue the conversation with John Woolf. This is a great dive into HOW YOU the Provider need to better understand YOURSELF before you can ever truly help others. This episode SHOULD make you uncomfortable and make YOU question WHAT you need to do to best help your patients. John’s share of his conversation on how to have a conversation with a patient that requests something that “the evidence doesn’t prove” is PURE GOLD!!...It’s about COMMUNICATION, CONVERSATION, and LISTENING…. What I like to call the Hard Shit!! We talk about WHY taking a “Pain Science” Class and learning the BioPsychoSocial Approach is useless without first UNDERSTANDING yourself….. We then move to how this training and how these skills are incorporated into the Patient Experience and HOW you bring it into the first phone call and all the steps up to the patient meeting their Provider. As John says, “We’re trained better to feel with our hands than to feel our own feelings”….
