How are working class women represented in contemporary culture? In Slags on Stage: Class, Sex, Art and Desire in British Culture (Routledge, 2025), Katie Beswick, a Senior Lecturer in Arts Management at Goldsmiths, University of London, examines this question by analysing the figure of the ‘slag' across a range of cultural forms, including theatre and television. Alongside a history of the idea of the ‘slag', the book draws on deep case studies of key artists, including Tracey Emin, Cash Carraway and Michaela Coel to understand both the meaning of ‘slags' in British culture and how class, race and gender all intersect in Britain's unequal society. Blending memoir, poetry, close reading, and history, the book is essential reading across the arts and humanities, as well as for anyone interested in culture today. Learn more about your ad choices. The Three Old Hacks discuss immigration this week. Mihir Bose, former Sports editor for the BBC, came here as an immigrant from India in the 1960s, not long after Enoch Powell made his famous 'Rivers of Blood' speech. Keir Starmer has been accused of evoking a fear of 'otherness' by echoing Powell's words, when he said Britain risked becoming an 'island of strangers'. David Smith, Economics editor of the Sunday Times, said Brexit had led to a massive increase in immigration, and we were "starting to shoot ourselves in the foot" because immigrants from the EU tended to be young, making little claim on the state, and usually returning home after they had spent a few years here. They did not displace British workers, the British workforce grew at the same rate, whereas now that was no longer the case. Nigel Dudley, political analyst, said Starmer's use of Powellite phraseology would give comfort and encourage racists. On a lighter note, Nigel also made an appeal for cricket players, as his village cricket ground is working to revive the sport locally. He's looking for players for Lidgate & Ousden Cricket Club and encouraged anyone living within a 20-mile radius of Newmarket or Bury St Edmunds to get in touch via their website: https://lidgateousden.play-cricket.com/homeGet in contact with the podcast by emailing threeoldhacks@outlook.com, we'd love to hear from you!

Yet today, Frizz and Bob pop open Quest's End Paladin Whiskey & Ardbeg Uigedal Scotch to bring you PART ONE of Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds- a British sci-fi marvel that, for decades, has been misunderstood and mostly unseen by the American eye. Easy English: Learn English with everyday conversations

Why do Brits celebrate November 5th? What time should you arrive to a party? Should you go to the pub with your boss? Interactive Transcript Support Easy English and get interactive transcripts and bonus content for all our episodes: easyenglish.fm/membership Transcript Mitch: [0:22] Okay, so welcome to episode 63 of the Easy English Podcast. Mitch: [0:28] Today, our main topic will be testing not only Isi, but also myself, quite nervously, on a British culture quiz. But, before we go into the quiz, we have a really exciting announcement, that we've been waiting to announce for ages. We will be starting another additional, conversation call. - Pub call. - We have one already, which is on Tuesday evenings, GMT at 18:15. Our new date will be every Wednesday at 12pm GMT. So maybe you're someone who you're quite good at speaking English, or you think you are, but you don't really have a way to practice your conversational English, speaking and listening. And let's say you've got to a certain level and you've hit a wall, this is the place where you should come, to really get to that next level and level-up your English. We will meet every week, twice a week now, and we will just talk about regular topics that you'll be speaking about, when you come to England, when you're working for an English company, or working in England, when you're visiting the UK, because it's all well and good reading a book and understanding the grammar and vocabulary, but when, we British people speak, as Isi can probably testify. - Yeah. - We're using grammatical errors, we're speaking very quickly, we're lazy, we're sloppy. Mitch: [1:56] Sorry Brits. - And so, the Easy English call is the best way to really put yourself on the ground and improve your English and really feel comfortable and confident, when you're going to come to the UK, work in the UK, and be able to interact with native speakers. Isi: [2:13] And even if you don't come to the UK, but just want to get better with your English, if you live in another English-speaking country, move to another English-speaking country, or just really are interested in the English language, or need it for your job, or because you have friends, partners, from English-speaking countries, whatever your reason is, you might want to improve and level-up your English. Mitch: [2:36] So if you are interested in becoming confident and levelling up your English speaking and listening skills, then join our Conversation Membership at easyenglish.video/membership. The Enthusiast: Anatomy of the Fanatic in Seventeenth-Century British Culture (Cornell UP, 2023) tells the story of a character type that was developed in early modern Britain to discredit radical prophets during an era that witnessed the dismantling of the Church of England's traditional means for punishing heresy. As William Cook Miller shows, the caricature of fanaticism, here called the Enthusiast began as propaganda against religious dissenters, especially working-class upstarts, but was adopted by a range of writers as a literary vehicle for exploring profound problems of spirit, soul, and body and as a persona for the ironic expression of their own prophetic illuminations. Taking shape through the public and private writings of some of the most insightful authors of seventeenth-century Britain-Henry More, John Locke, the Third Earl of Shaftesbury, Mary Astell, and Jonathan Swift, among others-the Enthusiast appeared in various guises and literary modes. By attending to this literary being and its animators, The Enthusiast establishes the figure of the fanatic as a bridge between the Reformation and the Enlightenment, showing how an incipient secular modernity was informed by not the rejection of religion but the transformation of the prophet into something sparkling, witty, ironic, and new. Do you believe in the supernatural? Are there unseen forces at work, which manipulate our lives and control our destinies? If something bad is fated to happen, can you intervene by paying close attention to omens and natural signs? I personally don't believe in superstitions…but I somehow find myself carrying them out all the time anyway. In honour of our unlucky-for-some episode number 13, this week I'm talking to one of my very best friends and favourite Wiccans, Charlie, about his opinions on good and bad luck omens. You may well listen to this episode with an open, curious mind before concluding that I'm totally insane - I won't blame you, but I'm not sure I can change! This episode, again, has lots of tricky vocabulary and advanced phrases/idioms, so have a look at the downloadable transcript for integrated explanations of some of that challenging language - it's available at: www.morethanalanguage.comFor a full transcript and additional learning resources here: morethanalanguage.com

Historian Jeremy Black is comprehensive, as ever, but in his treatment of the British Gothic novel his greatest service is the preservation of the detail--namely, the human impetus behind art that is often undervalued. Gothic novelists were purposeful, thoughtful, and engaged questions and feelings that ultimately shaped a century of culture. In The Age of Nightmare: The Gothic and British Culture, 1750-1900 (St. Augustine's Press, 2022), Black notes that the Gothic novel is also very much about "morality and deploying history accordingly." The true interest of the Gothic novel is more remarkable than it is grisly: the featured darkness and macabre are not meant to usurp heroism and purity, but will fall hard under the over-ruling hand of Providence and certainty of retribution. Black's understanding of the Gothic writer is a remarkable contribution to the legacy of British literature and the novel at large. Once again, in Black thoroughness meets fidelity and the reader is overcome with his own insights into the period on the merit of Black's efforts. In The Weight of Words Series, Black is devoted to the preservation of the memory of British literary genius, and in so doing he is carving out a niche for himself. As in the Gothic novel where landscapes give quarter to influences that seem to interact with the human fates that freely wander in, reading Black is an experience of suddenly finding oneself in possession of an education, and his allure takes a cue from the horrific Gothic tempt. 'What is "British Culture?” I was born in the UK and have lived here for 40 years, and yet, as a British Asian person, I am constantly told “we are not integrating”. Not integrating into what culture exactly?' Bushra Shaikh runs a charity, is a business-owner and is also a writer and commentator. When she posted this question on social media, two million people viewed it, she received thousands of replies, but no clear definition of British Culture. Some respondents mentioned the food, while others defined it by quoting literature or history. But those answers were often just lists; of meals. books, names and dates. Is "culture" a synonym for race? How can British people of colour integrate, and what does that mean? Americans put their hands on their hearts, gaze at the stars and stripes and identify with freedom, while the French look to liberty, equality, and fraternity, but is there a British equivalent? Bushra speaks to Historians, cultural commentators, as well as both the UK's newest citizens, and people who can trace their British family roots back hundreds of years, to try to find out what British culture means to them.
