Our guest, Joshua Ryan Butler, joins David Tieche for a frank and pointed discussion about sex and gender featuring questions from our congregation. If the Creation story shows how the pairing of male and female (marriage) reflects the intended whole of Creation, then what do single people reflect? Are they incomplete? A sun without a moon? If everyone is “fearfully and wonderfully” made - then explain people with same-sex attraction? Did God make them “wrong?” Wouldn't that make God cruel for giving SSA people a sexual attraction they can't fulfill according to God's law? Are churches that are not affirming more hostile (in some way) to the LBGTQ+ community? Also how should Christians approach people who identify as transexual, intersexual or asexual? We dig into these topics and more. Speakers: David Tieche + Joshua Ryan Butler

In recent years, the question of gender and biological sex - not someone's sexuality or sexual attraction but a person's internal sense of self and the social expression of that - has become a cultural flashpoint. What does it mean to be “male” or “female”? Is it fixed, or chosen by an individual? Does a person's biological sex even matter? And what does God think about all this? It's been called “a marvel” and “the Protestant magnum opus on sexual ethics we've been waiting for.” It's also been called “Sacred Pornography,” a “Protestant bowdlerization” of Theology of the Body,4 and “a rhapsody over a very male-centered experience of sexual intercourse.” If you haven't heard of it by now, welcome to the Twitterstorm. Josh Butler's newly released book Beautiful Union, and the excerpt from chapter one titled “Sex Won't Save You (But It Points to the One Who Will),” edited and posted by The Gospel Coalition (TGC), faced enormous backlash from evangelicals online — resulting in Butler's resignation as a fellow for the newly formed Keller Center for Cultural Apologetics, but more recently from his role as a lead pastor at Redemption Church in Tempe, Arizona. In Beautiful Union, Butler argues that marital sex is an icon we can look through to greater things, like a stained-glass window in a cathedral. The beautiful union of husband and wife, particularly as it's enacted in fruitful and faithful marital sex, is meant to give us a vision of the transcendent mystery of God's love, of Christ's union with the church. Because Protestantism has by and large incorporated contraception as a normal aspect of family planning, many are accustomed to thinking of sex as something that's solely for bonding and pleasure. Only if and when you want to, you can opt in and upgrade your sex plan to include the “child bonus pack,” otherwise your default fertility setting is off. With the unitive and procreative aspects of sex experientially severed most of the time for most couples, that changes the way we hear euphemisms about sex in the manner Butler uses them.Butler opens the book with a brief introduction to the idea of seeing iconically is very brief. That's all we get when it comes to iconography and its place in Christianity. A religious practice that has obtained for nearly two thousand years in the Eastern church, a practice that lies at the very heart of Eastern Orthodox liturgy and theology, so central to their faith and to the dogma of the Incarnation that many have been martyred in its defense — this iconic worldview is detached from its complex meaning and history, and is borrowed as a premise for a book written within and for a Reformed evangelical subculture that is iconoclastic. Iconic thought and practice is largely alien to evangelicalism and to the Reformed tradition, and yet Butler brings it in the front door without commenting on the oddity (or the implications) of such a pairing.Everything about Christian traditions (Protestant and Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox) that focuses on liturgy and church tradition — from the architecture of the church to the icons on the walls, from the sacraments and prayers to the liturgy and hymns, from the Scripture readings and the incense to the kneeling, bowing, genuflecting, and processing — is structured like a microcosm of reality that is anything but arbitrary. It is designed not merely to point you to heaven but to transport you there. Sex is meant to point to something bigger, reflecting the goodness of a purposeful Creator. Our God is an intentional designer and His creation, including sex and sexuality, was designed to point to greater things. For centuries the church has disregarded the importance and meaning of the body and sex, yet this conversation helps us see there is a different way to see and celebrate the story of God. Topics discussed include: The union of man and woman point to a greater union with God, sex as a signpost. The beauty of God's story written on our bodies. Moving from a rule based mindset to an image bearing mindset. Duty language vs. beauty language. Higher vision for singleness and marriage. Holy masculinity and image bearing role of men.   About Josh Butler: Joshua Ryan Butler serves as lead pastor of Redemption Tempe in Arizona. Matt had Joshua Ryan Butler back on the podcast to talk about his latest book, Beautiful Union. About 48 hours after Matt's interview with Josh in early March, a social media firestorm erupted when an excerpt of Beautiful Union was released on The Gospel Coalition website (that has since been removed). Pushback about Josh's unpacking of the biblical analogy between Christ and the Church came swift and strong, some calling it dangerous and others simply calling it gross. The uncharitable way in which people lambasted Josh aside, Matt believes that the evangelical church has a lot to learn from a more robust (and beautiful) theology of sex. What's the big deal about sex? Why does God care? What does God's original vision around sex say about Him and His design and plans for us? Dr. Carol talks with Joshua Ryan Butler, author and pastor, about seeing God's vision for sex as a window into God's story of redemption, and a validating guide to living with authentic love in a changing culture. This week on the podcast I'm re-releasing the conversation I had with Joshua Ryan Butler on his outstanding book, The Skeletons in God's Closet. Our conversation in August 2020 focused on just the first third of his book, The Mercy of Hell. I decided to re-release this episode here on the podcast because of Jesus' words in Matthew 5:21-30 on hell and how important it is to think rightly about what Jesus means when he uses that word.  I know you'll appreciate Joshua's insights, and I encourage you to read his book if you haven't already.  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unbinding-the-bible/support

Repentance | Matthew 3

Jon preached from Matthew 3 on repentance.  He told the story of the lionfish that is beautiful, quiet, seems harmless, but is actually extremely poisonous, spreads quickly and has no true predator.  The lionfish is taking over the Atlantic ocean even though there have been many efforts to contain them.  Finally, Florida told their people that they have to kill them to control their growth.  We bring sin in just like this.  It can feel good, seem harmless and look good but before you know it turn into an addiction.  There is no predator for sin.  It will continue to grow and unlike the lionfish, humans cannot destroy sin.  Only when judgement comes will sin be destroyed.  Jon discussed how we cannot hide in the church from sin.  The church is not a safe place from sin.  It should however be a place where everyone can come and everyone can flourish.  In verses 1-6, John the Baptist comes from the wilderness with the wardrobe and diet of a prophet telling the people to REPENT!  Judgement and repentance are hard topics.  However, if we are going to be a church and community that follows Christ, we are going to follow the bible.   In verses 7-12 the Pharisees are called a "brood of vipers."  In today's world, we see the people with the signs stating "God Hates XXXX" while screaming about God's judgement.   This is not what the text states.  He is calling us out.  We need to stop worrying about others and look at ourselves.  The Pharisees were always condemning others and John was telling them to look within.  Don't think because you attend the right church and know the right things to say that you are in.  Many will be turned away. We do need to know that God is good and will make things right and be just. Judgement will come but only Jesus can be that judge.   Verses 13-17 assure us that there is good news.  "This is my beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased."  More to come on this next week.   Jon challenged us to ask God where He is calling us each to repent.  Where are you hiding in your religion?  Jon also recommended the book The Skeletons in God's Closet by Joshua Ryan Butler if you want to dig deeper on judgement and repentance.   https://redeemerwichita.church/

The idea of “evangelism” can be scary to both believers and non-believers. Understanding how non-believers feel about spiritual conversations helps us share the Good News in ways that will draw others in, rather than scare them away. Kelli Jordan and Melodi Leih talk through some trends in today's culture impacting how people feel about “evangelism.” If we can understand some of the trends, we can face them with truth. We speak of “searching for God,” “exploring spirituality,” and “finding faith.” But what if we have it backward, and God is the one pursuing us?What if our job is not to go find God but stop running and hiding? Not to discover the light, but step out of the shadows? Not to earn God's love, but simply receive it? Jesus reveals a pursuing God who comes after us, and when He finds us, a celebration ensues. The question we're left with is not whether we've been good enough, jumped high enough, or sought hard enough... the question is: “Do we want to be found?”

Deconstructing Deconstruction. In what has become a miniseries of its own, today, Joshua Ryan Butler sits down with Mike and Tim to discuss his article for the Gospel Coalition on the causes and cures of deconstruction. How does Josh define deconstruction? Did he talk with anyone about their deconstruction while writing it? Who was the article written for and to serve what purpose? Has he himself ever deconstructed? This is a long chat but well worth the time. 00:00 - Mike's son Nate sits down with Mike and Tim to discuss his lack of presence on the podcast. 08:49 - Tim kinda repents of his “Troubled Times,” and asks for help in naming a new segment that highlights the good things the Church is doing in the world. If you come across stories of the Church fulfilling it's calling to serve the World, email them to hello@voxpodcast.com. 20:00 - Joshua Ryan Butler joins Mike and Tim to answer listener questions and broaden his thoughts on his article: “Four Causes of Deconstruction.” Josh can be followed on Twitter HERE. What Causes Deconstruction? In this episode, Mike and Tim respond to Joshua Ryan Butler's article for the Gospel Coalition called "4 Causes of Deconstruction." In the article, Butler lays out four different causes for deconstruction: 1. Church Hurt 2. Poor Teaching 3. Desire to Sin. 4. Street Cred. Each section is broken into a symptom and a cure, ie. "Poor Teaching" is cured by "Good Teaching." Is it wrong to deconstruct? Is it dangerous? Is it selfish? Can deconstruction be broken down this simply? Do we all fall into one of these categories when deconstructing our faith or culture? Is it all as simple as "symptom" and "cure?" If not, how are we to approach this all? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Always feel free to email in questions to hello@voxpodcast.com, and to engage the conversation on Facebook and Instagram. Understanding the Bible: Part Two. Today we continue the conversation about the Bible with pastor and author Joshua Ryan Butler. Josh, who wrote "The Skeletons in God's Closet" (which Mike referenced a few times throughout the 'New Creation' series), sits down to chat about the complexities of the Bible and how we can approach it. Is the Bible 'authoritative?' What does that mean? How can God's word be manipulated and used for wrong? What are we to make of Old Testament violence, which seems to be God sanctioned? How do we read the Bible? Again, what are we to do with all of this??? As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue.
