Faith often becomes a checklist—prayer, scripture study, ministry—rather than a living, breathing relationship with Jesus. In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Alan Fadling speaks with bestselling author and teacher John Eldredge about shifting from a performance-based spiritual life to one rooted in presence, intimacy, and encounter. We talk about how to slow down in a world that values hustle, how to rediscover wonder in the midst of cynicism, and how to create personal rhythms that foster authentic connection with Jesus. If you long to experience Jesus—really—this conversation is for you. John’s latest book, Experience Jesus—Really., invites readers into a deeper awareness of God’s presence and shows how to move from knowing about God to actually knowing Him in relationship. Whether you feel spiritually dry, distracted by life’s pace, or just want to deepen your walk with Christ, this episode offers practical wisdom and hopeful encouragement. Guest Bio: John Eldredge is a bestselling author, counselor, and the president of Wild at Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God and live more fully in His Kingdom. His books, including Wild at Heart, Beautiful Outlaw, and Get Your Life Back, have guided millions toward a more vibrant and personal walk with God. Through his teaching, writing, and podcasting, John invites people to experience God not as a distant figure, but as a present and personal friend. Connect with John Eldredge:
Life doesn’t always go according to plan. The map you were following suddenly doesn’t make sense. What once felt solid begins to crack. But what if this unraveling isn’t a detour... what if it’s part of the sacred path? In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Gem and Alan Fadling explore a powerful biblical framework for spiritual transformation—orientation, disorientation, and new orientation—a pattern identified by Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann and lived out in the Psalms, in Christian history, and in our lives today. Whether you're deconstructing your faith, walking through midlife questions, or just feeling lost in a long winter of the soul, this conversation will meet you there—with honesty, hope, and a deeper invitation into God’s presence.
Leadership is sacred work—but it can also leave wounds. What happens when unaddressed pain begins to shape the way we lead? And how can healing restore not only our souls but also the communities we serve? In this episode, Alan Fadling is joined by Nicolas Rowe and Sheila Wise-Rowe, authors of Healing Leadership Trauma: Finding Emotional Health and Helping Others Flourish. Together, they offer a wise, grace-filled vision of leadership rooted in wholeness rather than woundedness. This conversation is an invitation—to slow down, to pay attention to your inner life, and to believe that healing is not only possible but essential to healthy, sustainable leadership.

Are you afraid to let go of your anxiety? Do you see your stress level as a driver of your everyday decisions and activities? If that sounds familiar, you will be able to relate to Alan Fadling, who is the president and founder of Unhurried Living. He shares how acutely he was clinging to his anxiety as an engine to complete every task at hand. “I was afraid if I didn't have my anxiety, I wouldn't get anything done,” he says. But anxiety, he explains, is an unsustainable energy force. We are much better off embracing the Prince of Peace - Jesus - in our moments of fear and stress than relying on our own anxious physical responses to move us forward. Don't let anxiety become the god of your life. Trust Jesus and let Him reign peacefully over your heart instead. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
This second week of Advent invites us to reflect on the theme of peace—a peace that became possible through the arrival of Jesus. Get your FREE Unhurried Advent Guide here. This 25-day guide is filled with Scripture meditations, devotional readings with reflective questions, and contemplative imagery—all designed to help you slow down and savor the Advent season. Created in collaboration with Unhurried Living, a ministry I'm confident you'll love. Jesus brought peace. Peace in our relationship with God, peace into our lives, and peace into the world. The peace He offers isn't a distant, someday-when-life-is-perfect kind of peace. It's a peace we can experience right now—in the middle of the mess. I love how Alan Fadling, from Unhurried Living and one of the contributors to the Unhurried Advent Guide, puts it:“Anything we can do in anxiety, we can do better in peace.” This doesn't ignore the fact that real life is often messy and difficult. But imagine if there were an undercurrent of peace flowing through your life instead of anxiety. How would that change the way you live, love, and respond to your circumstances? Today, we're meditating on the announcement of Jesus's birth to the shepherds. In this extraordinary moment, God gives them (and us) the profound gift of peace. As you listen to this meditation, I invite you to step into the shepherds' shoes and wonder: What would it have been like to witness this moment? More importantly, how might Jesus be inviting you to embrace His peace this Advent season? I'm praying that this meditation helps you pause, reflect, and receive the peace Jesus offers. The entire meditation text is as follows: Luke 2:8–14, NLT 8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don't be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.

Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking! Is it possible to lead a congregation without being consumed by anxiety and stress? How can we as ministry leaders manage the pressures and expectations we carry while maintaining a sense of peace and lightness? In this episode, Alan Fadling, author of A Non-Anxious Life, unpacks how ministry leaders can navigate anxiety by creating a supportive network of friends and mentors, understanding God's joyful nature, and how these realities can transform our personal life and pastoral leadership.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Alan Fadling advises not bringing personal anxiety into a congregation but sharing it with friends, mentors, therapists, and spiritual directors. Alan Fadling highlights that his experience with managing anxiety has been supported by people outside his immediate church community. Referencing Lewis Smedes' Shame and Grace, Markus Watson illustrates how acceptance from others can help people feel less anxious and more acceptable. Discussing his book about anxiety with a church small group, Alan Fadling emphasizes the value of having outside perspectives to reassure one's concerns. Understanding God's joyful nature can lead to personal transformation and fuller acceptance of grace. Markus Watson relates a story about providing comfort rather than judgment, illustrating how fear and anxiety are addressed in a supportive manner. Categorizing anxiety as a sin is unhelpful, Fadling emphasizes, especially from a pastoral perspective. Referencing Eugene Peterson's interpretation from Philippians 4, Alan Fadling focuses on replacing anxiety with peace through prayer. We should recognize God's presence in anxious moments through prayer and reflection rather than avoid anxiety. Inspired by Dallas Willard, Fadling shares a personal practice of using scripture to find peace amidst anxiety. Psalms of Lament can help engage with and express anxiety while relying on God's support. Journaling with honesty, as practiced by Alan Fadling, serves as a personal dialogue with God and reinforces that God cares and one is not alone. Fadling's early ministry concerns included whether congregants liked him, stemming from personal insecurity. Discussing a "recognition deficit," Alan Fadling notes the mistake of seeking validation from congregations instead of from God.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Alan Fadling:Unhurriedliving.comUnhurried Living PodcastBooks mentioned:A Non-Anxious Life, by Alan FadlingThe Wounded Healer, by Henri NouwenShame and Grace, by Lewis SmedesEmotionally Healthy Spirituality, by Lewis SmedesRelated Episodes:The Healing Power of Pilgrimage, with Jon HuckinsSaudade, Leadership, and Nurturing the Inner Life, with Jeff CrosbyDid you know Spiritual Life and Leadership has been named the #1 Spiritual Leadership Podcast by the Feedspot Podcasters Database? Bonjour! Stephanie here. How do we overcome anxiety, and embrace peace? More than ever, our daily life seems to fight us on this quest. Do you, like so many of us, see anxiety as an incentive to perform? Or a proof of how much you care? Or is anxiety simply an unwelcome shadow over your days, bringing with it clenched teeth and an upset stomach? Today is an invitation to step into a life characterized by peace, grace, and gentleness, replete with the palpable presence of God. God promises us that it is ours in Christ Jesus. The world does it best to make it impossible. So, which one will it be? Anxiety leads us to succumb to fear and fight peace. Anxious living is a distortion of good motives, blocking the clarity of stillness and rest. Peace is the antidote to anxiety. This peace is found in practicing God's presence and embodying the virtues of grace, found in Christ. But, what does it look like, and how do we get there? This week I welcome Alan Fadling back on the show to dive into a real and raw conversation about overcoming anxiety and finding peace. Alan has felt mastered by worry, but he brings counsel on how to learn a better way and who to look to for it: Jesus, "the ultimate non-anxious presence." He constructs a posture from which we can rest more deeply, live more fully, and lead better. Fixing our minds on grace and eternity, we can begin to see the benefit of loosening our grip and operating from a sure foundation. Alan candidly shares his personal journey, highlighting how anxiety, coupled with perfectionism, led to a cycle of high standards, achievements, and ultimately, dissatisfaction and discouragement. His honest portrayal of himself as a "recovering perfectionist" resonated deeply with me – and I suspect I am not the only one! Alan's emphasis on progress over perfection reminds us that growth is a journey, not a destination. This is a deeply biblical message that our culture has us forget all too easily. And so we find that grace, with its essence of unmerited favor and unconditional love found in Christ, becomes a transformative force, offering solace and redemption in the face of anxiety. This is one of the key messages of Scripture. Alan also shares with us the practice of embodying God's presence and cultivating "little virtues" such as humility, patience, gentleness, dependence, and surrender. He tells us about learning patience in the chaos of Southern California traffic, reminding us that it's the simple things that steer us towards a peaceful life, even when the world seems to have gone upside down. This underscores the significance of relinquishing the incessant pursuit of materialistic and ambitious goals in favor of humility and grace. Scripture makes clear the importance of faith, imagination, and embracing an "unhurried influence." Rattling through life at top speed isn't the secret to peace. Alan's prayer for the audience to grow in unhurried influence is an open invitation to take the scenic route, savouring the moments, and stepping into a life ruled by peace, grace, and gentleness. So, as you sail away from this episode, remember - peace isn't found in the rush-rush of everyday life, but in the sweet, steady rhythm of grace in Christ Jesus. Imagine the hilarity of trying to surprise your wife with a bicycle, only to be met with an unexpected lesson on life's true priorities. That's where our story kicks off—a comical yet profound reminder that, much like in the biblical narrative of Martha and Mary, we often find ourselves tangled in the web of everyday distractions. Throughout this episode, I'll take you through the twists and turns of maintaining focus on what matters most, from our personal relationships to our sacred moments with Jesus. You won't want to miss how Jon found myself lost in the melody of his wife Diana's music, just like we sometimes lose ourselves in the rhythm of our routines. As we unravel the threads of our personal pursuits and passions, Jon reflects on how these influences have the power to reshape our preferences, including his newfound love for Mexican cuisine and the band Chicago. This episode is an invitation to embrace the distractions that draw us closer to those we love, and especially, those that pull us into deeper communion with Christ. Finally, let's talk about leading an unhurried life, one that's bathed in the serenity of Christ's footsteps, inspired by Alan Fadling's insights. Ever been pricked by a jumping cholla cactus? Jon share a prickly encounter of his own that brings home the point of Jesus being the most beautiful of interruptions. Tune in for his personal strategies on engaging with scripture, journaling, and prayer that might just transform your own spiritual journey. Together, let's learn to choose the 'one thing necessary,' turning our faith into the ultimate, life-enriching 'distraction.Video available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hnwmo1B78u8
