Daniel (Ralph Macchio) travels with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to his childhood home in Okinawa when he discovers his father is on his deathbed. Miyagi's presence rekindles a feud with his former best friend Sato (Danny Kamekona), whose arranged marriage was ruined by Miyagi's love for his betrothed, Yukie (Nobu McCarthy). Daniel also finds new love in Yukie's niece, Kumiko (Tanlyn Tomita), though his presence stirs up trouble among Sato's Gang.
Matt and Eric travel to Okinawa for a few tea ceremonies, some duels to the death, and the storm of the centuy -- all for glory of love (and THE KARATE KID PART II)! This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris enter the world of evil karate to talk about The Karate Kid Part III, which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, and it's also just in time for the start of the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai.Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita return as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi, fresh from their trip to Okinawa in The Karate Kid Part II. Instead of going to college, Daniel buys a rundown store on the wrong side of town and tries to open a bonsai store with Mr. Miyagi. Unfortunately for the duo, John Kreese (Martin Kove) is looking for revenge after he was humiliated in The Karate Kid and contacts his millionaire friend Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) to enact an extremely complicated scheme to crush Daniel and Mr. Miyagi under the might of Cobra Kai. The guys talk about the over-the-top Bond villainy of Terry Silver, the surprising amount of mountain rappelling in a karate movie, the legality of a 17-year-old leasing a business in 1980s California, the movie's surprising importance to Cobra Kai, the extremely abbreviated All Valley Tournament and more. You can watch The Karate Kid Part III on Starz or buy/rent it from digital storefronts like Amazon. Next week, we'll discuss The Last Starfighter as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Send them all to contact@everythingaction.com. Prodigal Son was conceived by Kove and writer-producer Don Handfield — who co-writes the series. Handfield is the author of hit comic series The Dark Age, The Source and The Rift. He is also co-creator and EP of History Channel's Knightfall, and producer of The Founder, staring Michael Keaton. Actor-writer Clay Adams penned the series alongside Handfield and is a voice talent behind animated series TMNT, Yu-Gi-Oh! and writer of Scout Comics' Red X-Mas. Producer Chris LeMole (Mudbound, Peanut Butter Falcon) also shares story credit.Pre-launch Page Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1546838856/prodigal-son-1Martin Kove was born on March 6, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. Strong-featured, narrow-eyed actor who has portrayed a mixed bag of both good guys and bad guys. He first turned up on screen in several minor roles, and was noticed as the villainous Nero the Hero in the low-budget road race Death Race 2000 (1975), and then as Clem the sadistic rigger, breaking Jan-Michael Vincent's ribs in White Line Fever (1975). He cropped up on the television series Cagney & Lacey (1981) portraying honest Police Detective Isbecki, and then ended up on the wrong side of a rampaging Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985).Kove probably scored his greatest visibility to the public in the hugely successful The Karate Kid (1984) in which he played John Kreese, the head instructor of the Cobra Kai karate school. He reprised the role in the two sequels, The Karate Kid Part II (1986) and The Karate Kid Part III (1989). Kove has since kept consistently busy, primarily in the action-thriller film genre, and has notched up over 80 film appearances to date, as well as numerous television guest roles.
For our fifth and final episode of the School's Out for Summer series, we're taking a long summer vacation with The Karate Kid Part II. Snatched from the certain doom of a summer in Fresno, Daniel accompanies his mentor Mr. Miyagi to Okinawa, where they face off with a new set of enemies, Sato and his sharply dressed nephew Chozen. We talk about our memories of seeing this film (and reading the novelization) as kids, the surprisingly deep meditations on family and loss, the 50s mania of the 80s, Back to the Future connections, and the absolute banger of a theme song, Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love." Brush up on your drum technique and your O-Bon dance moves and give us a listen!

In the second half of our discussion on the Karate Kid sequel, David and Eugene discuss Daniel-san, Miyagi, Sato, Kumiko, the romances, plot twists, final battle, what happens to these characters after the movie (which we know thanks to Cobra Kai), and the impact this movie had on our lives. After three episodes over two years, it's safe to say we've squeezed all the juice we could out of this film. We're taking our annual winter break following this episode and will be back in 2023. We hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and as always, thanks for listening! Last year around this time, David and Eugene reviewed one of David's all time favorite movies, “An Ode to My Father.” Because we had so much fun with that episode, we decided to take another ride on the nostalgia train, this time revisiting the 1986 martial arts sequel, The Karate Kid Part II. In addition to discussing the movie itself, we talk about what it felt like watching this movie growing up, whether it still holds up, and seeing it now through a more grown up lens. Join Amanda, Charlie, Dom and Joe as we look at this sequel to what's considered a classic 80s film.We had two films in mind - listen to the story of how this got chosen (Charlie denies any malpractice). We wonder at the Miyagi/Daniel relationship, wonder if the Karate Kid actually knows Karate as he gets beaten up a lot and Charlie has a laughing fit - a few, actually.Enjoy. Matt gets sad. Both Matt and Doug try to avoid caricatures though the movie leans into them. A decision is made about Star Wars films. All that and the realization that the show has come down to talking about the weather. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mattanddoug/message
Stage and screen actor Yuji Okumoto joins us on the show this week to talk all thing Cobra Kai and the role he first played nearly 40 years ago, the one and only Chozen. Yuji reflects on the early days of his career and working with Ralph Macchio and Mr. Miyagi himself in The Karate Kid: Part II, and how much representation in entertainment has improved for Asian Americans and all actors of color, giving a special shout-out to his co-star Xolo Maridueña who will soon be starring in the DC film Blue Beetle. As part of Sequel September, we're covering the second installment in The Karate Kid franchise ... Part II! From 1986, this movie picks up right where the first movie left off, yes that's right - in the boy's locker room! Danielson is fresh off the mats after crane kicking the shit out of Johnny Lawrence! However, Part II takes us on a journey to Okinawa, to wade through a love triangle Mr. Miyagi left behind 40 years ago! Lucky us! So this movie is a bit quieter than the other two in the franchise and has a bit lesson action (though it does have a typhoon!), but pretty much the same amount of Danielson getting his ass whooped by karate assholes and another tricky move by Mr. Miyagi (ooo the drum!). We'll talk a lot about Cobra Kai and the character reversal good old Chozen gets, induct Danielson into the Sweetie Club once and for all, and come to the conclusion that Mr. Miyagi's brand of karate should be called "How To Dupe Some Kid To Do Your Household Chores".
After the massive success of John G. Avildsen's first Karate Kid, this even-more-successful sequel has Ralph Macchio & Pat Morita in Okinawa. The focus (oh, that infamous focus) in Karate Kid Part II is on Miyagi and the life he ran away from decades earlier. Don't get hung up on the name of the movie though. Daniel is barely even necessary this time. Although make no mistake, these 2 characters are iconic and the 2 stars are always good in their roles. Story-wise, this isn't a complete rehash of the first film, but they sure didn't avoid hitting a ton of the same beats. This time though you get the improbable ice chop, the puzzling drum technique and not one but two love stories balanced with a running theme of dangerous rivals who are more blood-thirsty than even the Cobra Kai guys. This is far from a perfect sports flick, but it's entertaining and sometimes even touching. So honk a sitting duck's nose rather than beat him to death with your bare hands as we dig into the many corners of The Karate Kid Part II, listener-san. Cooper and Nolan are back from their mid-season break, and thanks to a very special audience request they're waxing on (and off) about THE KARATE KID PART II - aka The Karate Kid, but in Japan this time. Much like the movie's producers, the guys are running back enjoyable bits from earlier installments, such as: - Who's the real hero of this movie? - Everyone loves Elizabeth Shue - Is that guy actually (insert cultural background here)? ...plus their usual assortment of d**k jokes and nonsense. So get ready to experience the Glory of Love; this episode (featuring a collaboration between Sawdust City Brewing Co. and Indie Alehouse) is sure to drum up some excitement!
