From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): The two New York teams are now officially one step away from the World Series, with the likes of LA, San Diego, Cleveland and Detroit needing one more game to determine their fate. We look how this postseason has been different, with bullpens taking center stage. Bradfo also sits down with catcher Kevin Plawecki, who has a unique perspective on some pretty important subjects - being employed by the Padres this season, starting a winner-take-all playoff game, experiencing Francisco Lindor as a teammate, and riding through a World Series run in New York with the Mets. He also gives us World Series predictions and an update on what he's doing with the tree that broke his back. We come out of the gates hot in today's episode with Jared defending “Dancing On My Own” as the Red Sox song even though the Phillies are running it back for the second year. Kevin Plawecki calls in to give his take as the originator of the song. Later on, we dive deeper into Trout's emotional comments and what that says about his status in LA. We even get Tex's take on the Astros chances to make a playoff run. We finish up by checking in on the NL Wild Card chaos and then we gone! Thanks for listening and we'll see you tomorrow! When Francisco Álvarez was hit by a pitch yesterday to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, Buck Showalter made the move that any manager would, sending in Tim Locastro to run for his catcher, needing him to go 270 feet to win the game.It turned out that Álvarez just could have scored as easily as Locastro did, as DJ Stewart singled, Mark Vientos walked, and Rafael Ortega laced the walkoff single to right field. The last time the Mets had a pinch-runner come in and score as part of a walkoff rally was three years ago today, Billy Hamilton in the seventh inning at Yankee Stadium, in a doubleheader nightcap where the Mets were the home team. In that one, Jeff McNeil walked against Aroldis Chapman, and Hamilton came in and stole second base before trotting home on Amed Rosario's two-run shot.In that instance, Hamilton represented the tying run. So did Juan Lagares when he scored on Dominic Smith's home run to end the 2019 season. But it is Lagares who was the previous Mets pinch-runner to bring home a walkoff run. On September 26, 2017, Kevin Plawecki greeted A.J. Minter with a single as the Mets were tied 3-3 with Atlanta. Smith walked and Rosario struck out before Travis Taijeron delivered the winning hit. There's been only one time in Mets history that a runner entered the game, stole a base, and scored the winning run, and it was in the 13th inning on April 23, 1992, after a duel between Bret Saberhagen and Donovan Osborne went scoreless into extras. The Mets had already caught Rex Hudler stealing in the 12th when Dave Magadan singled with one out in the 13th — he was replaced at first by Rodney McCray, who became famous the year before. You've seen that video a million times. You probably haven't seen McCray go to second on a Junior Noboa single, steal third, and after an intentional walk to Charlie O'Brien, score the winning run when Juan Agosto hit Daryl Boston with a pitch. Well, now you can, because that game is on YouTube, with Tim McCarver and Ralph Kiner on the call.Shoutout to Keith Miller, who pinch-ran for Garry Templeton after a leadoff single in the ninth inning of a 5-4 game, got picked off but advanced to second because Expos pitcher Barry Jones threw the ball away, then stole third and eventually scored on Kevin McReynolds' walkoff grand slam off Scott Ruskin. That was the last walkoff grand slam the Mets hit at Shea, following Mike Jorgensen in 1980 and Tim Teufel in 1986. Tim Harkness and Jim Hickman each did it in 1963 at the Polo Grounds, while Citi Field has had walkoff slams by Jordany Valdespin in 2013, Ike Davis in 2014, and José Bautista in 2018. Last night in Queens was special, as Mark Vientos and Francisco Álvarez hit game-tying home runs, the latter with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Pete Alonso walked it off with a three-run shot in the 10th.Obviously, that kind of thing doesn't happen often. But there are a few games in Mets history that it recalls, and those are fun, too. For instance, May 21, 2000, when Randy Johnson started for the Diamondbacks and gave up tying dingers to Mike Piazza in the third and Edgardo Alfonzo in the seventh, followed by Robin Ventura taking Mike Morgan deep in the eighth to tie the game yet again, and the Mets winning, 7-6, on a walkoff single by Derek Bell off Byung-Hyun Kim, with Joe McEwing (who hit two non-tying homers off the Big Unit that day) scoring the winning run.The Mets' other game hitting three tying home runs to thrill fans in Flushing was in 1993, with Bobby Bonilla hitting two of those homers, Tim Bogar the other, and the Mets still losing to the Reds. But how about two tying homers and a walkoff? The first time the Mets ever did that was 40 years ago this month: May 6, 1983, in a game that started as a Tom Seaver-Mario Soto duel. Dave Kingman got the Mets to extra innings with a two-run shot off Soto in the ninth, Hubie Brooks blasted a solo homer off Tom Hume in the 10th, and George Foster won it with a three-run dinger in the 13th off Frank Pastore.Three years later, on July 3, 1986, Darryl Strawberry hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning off Jim Deshaies for a 3-3 tie with the Astros, then hit a two-run shot off Frank DiPino in the 10th to tie it again after Phil Garner had taken Jesse Orosco deep in the top of the inning. After DiPino settled down for a pair of outs, Ray Knight won that one with a solo shot.It took another 20 years for another such game at Shea, until May 23, 2006. And that game itself took 16 innings against the Phillies. The first tying homer was Cliff Floyd off Gavin Floyd for a 2-2 game in the fourth inning, then José Reyes in the eighth off Ryan Franklin to make it 8-8. Being one of those games, of course nobody then scored until the 16th, when Carlos Beltrán punished Ryan Madson on a 2-2 pitch for a 9-8 Mets win. That's some big names in Mets history for those games… and then there's the last time before last night that they'd had two tying homers plus a walkoff: September 13, 2018, against the Marlins — a Thursday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. But unless the Mets can acquire Shohei Ohtani, it's special in its own way that won't soon be repeated.Steven Matz started for the Mets and gave up back-to-back homers to Peter O'Brien and Isaac Galloway (these were real major leaguers five years ago) in the second inning. But in the bottom of the inning, after a Kevin Plawecki walk, Matz hit a homer off Sandy Alcantara (hey, he's actually good).Alcantara being actually good, the Mets didn't score again against him, and went to the ninth inning down 3-2. With two outs, Michael Conforto tied the game with a dinger off Kyle Barraclough. Three pitches later, Todd Frazier sent everyone… well, not home happy, because doubleheader (the Mets won the second game, 5-2, with Tomás Nido homering off the same Jeff Brigham who gave up Jose Siri's homer last night), but to the concession stands happy? So, that's five times in Mets history that they've hit two game-tying homers and gone on to walk it off. Red Sox Review with Brian Barrett-  The Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-1 tonight behind a big night at the plate from Xander Bogaerts as he went 4/4 with an RBI and bumped his season to .397. Is it time for Chaim Bloom to bust out the check book for Xander?  Bobby Dalbec has another rough game, how much longer can the Red Sox role with the 26 year old at first base with Triston Casas on the horizon?  Is it time for Kevin Plawecki to become the everyday catcher for the Red Sox?  Red Sox bullpen gets the job done as the inconsistencies continue.

Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners

Telegram Sam Haggerty sure had himself a great series, so D.C. talks about his exploits throughout the entire episode while referencing the song from which D.C. gave Mr. Haggerty his nickname. (D.C. also is assuming that Mr. Haggerty has never heard this particular song before.) Anyways, the Red Sox took two of three from the Mariners over the weekend, though there were some very good performances by the M's. Most impressive was Chris Flexen on Saturday, who turned in his best start of the season thus far. Along with Telegram Sam, Kyle Seager also had a good series, and nearly hit for the cycle on Saturday. In addition, D.C. noticed something about the fad of catching on one knee that's been implemented across Major League Baseball, and talks about it for a while in B block on the heels of Red Sox catcher Kevin Plawecki's game in which he allowed three wild pitches and two passed balls.
