I invited a very special language learning and language loving friend to co-host this episode with me and chat all about the joys of language learning. This is a very familiar voice in the language learning community, and it's such a pleasure to have Kerstin Cable of Fluent Language and The Fluent Show on Love, Joy, and Languages! We had an absolute blast talking about loving languages and finding joy in learning them. This chat is extra special for me because I don't think this show would exist without Kerstin and her Podcasting 101 course (https://www.kerstincable.com/podcasting101). Big thanks to Kerstin for putting so much goodness out into the world! In today's episode, Kersin and I talk about celebrating our language achievements, the value of self-work and appreciating your own personal journey, language exams and the excitement of the process, lots of German language, the link between language and culture, Kerstin teaches me a bit Welsh (you'll see why this language can easily become an obsession!), and Kerstin shares some of her favorite language things and people. Learning a language is a long road, and there are so many challenges along the way, but something that keeps us in the language learning world is all the joy we find in the process and the community. I hope you enjoy listening in to my chat with Kerstin, and I hope it reminds you of all the exciting things you find in your own language life. Although we'd love to cover it all, we'll have to narrow it down to the news that we think matters most—starting Alex Kurtzman's new 5-year/$160 million contract with Paramount+ to develop not only Star Trek, but other projects as well. The New York Times's Nicole Sperling published an article on August 1, 2021, featuring interviews with Kurtzman and other major players involved. The article explores Kurtzman's past, present, and future projects for the studio and the hopes he has for the franchise. Something particularly interesting though, was the announcement that a “Starfleet Academy” series is in the works which “will be aimed at a younger audience.” Also, according to Sperling: Mr. Kurtzman, who wants to get much weirder with the franchise… points to a pitch from Graham Wagner (Portlandia, Silicon Valley), centered on the character Worf, that he calls “incredibly funny, poignant and touching. If it were up to me only, I would be pushing the boundaries much further than I think most people would want,” he said. “I think we might get there. Marvel has actually proven that you can. "There's a kinda type of person out there who I hadn't had a lot of interaction with … called a Star Trek fan" This week I am excited to bring you an interview with a brilliant linguist: Marc Okrand! Marc Okrand created the dialogue and coached the actors speaking the Klingon language heard in many episodes and movies in the Star Trek franchise. In addition, he devised dialogue in Vulcan, Romulan, Kelpien, and other languages for several Star Trek films and TV series. In this interview, we discussed the language itself and how it was created what it felt like for Marc to attend the first ever meet-up of Klingon speakers which good learning mindsets actors bring to learning a new language ‘These people have become family. These people have become friends' I met Marc Okrand at Langfest in Montreal https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/9/9103f3da-a263-4bfe-b5a3-58649ff9b5f7/TIo6_9NH.jpg Thank you to Marc for this episode introduction. That's right, 4th Friday means a pop culture episode. Francis leads the guys with enthusiasm for a fun and insightful look at Star Trek's complex bad guys, the Klingons. Bad guys? Well, OK, to quote Trevor Slattery, "hey, it's complicated". There are so many Star Trek moments that the guys recommend in this episode, but if you're looking for a really cool resource in print-kindle format, try The Klingon Dictionary by linguist Marc Okrand from 1992 where the entire Klingon Language is laid out, complete with grammar, syntax, pronunciation and much more.

Tonight's round Table brings Keefe, Kerry and Chris together to look at three new topics. The First is about a study done in America says that even teens admit that they are addicted to their cell phones. Second we talk about a finnish boy who was able to point out a software flaw and win 10k in reward money. Last we follwup on the lawsuit on Anaxar where a American Language Society wants to argue that the Klingon Language can not be copy-written. These brings discussion and incite for us that even when setting a time limit, Kerry finds a way to write a book.

In this episode we were overjoyed to have Marc Okrand, the creator of the Klingon Language, come on the show. The interview was insightful as Marc talked about how he got started in linguistics, how he was tapped to create the Vulcan language before he created the Klingon language, and how 'Conlanging' or Constructed Languages has become a big thing. Marc even has a documentary coming out on the subject. And He told some stories about Star Trek from a behind-the-scenes view. Enjoy.

Offers for majority ownership of such diverse languages as Eastern Yugur, Basque, and Mofu are reported by knowledgeable sources as running well into the tens of millions of US dollars.
