New from Knockabout Media: How I Wrote This w/ Pamela HensleyThere's mystery within the creative process and a story behind every story. In the new podcast How I Wrote This, host Pamela Hensley sits down with acclaimed novelists, essayists, playwrights, translators, poets, and short story writers to learn more about their lives and the events that shaped their work.Episode 1: Julia Franck was born in 1970 in East Berlin in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic), a part of Germany that, at the time, was behind the Iron Curtain. As a child, she fled with her mother to the West and lived for nine months in a refugee camp, where they were interrogated by agents of the secret police. Five years later, when she was just thirteen, she left her mother's home and returned to Berlin, this time living on the Western side with friends. Julia is the daughter of an actress and granddaughter of a sculptor whose family history has provided the backdrop for some of her most powerful books. The Blind Side of the Heart (called the Blindness of the Heart in the US), tells the story of a woman who abandons her son on a railway platform in 1945 after surviving the horrors of the Second World War. It was a story based on her own father's childhood, a man she only met at the age of fourteen. The novel won the German Book Prize, the highest honour for literature in Germany, and went on to sell over a million copies. Two more of her books have been translated into English: Back to Back, based on her uncle's life at the time when the Berlin Wall was being built; and West, which was adapted for the screen.Julia's recommended reads:Herta Müller Katja OskampDana VowinckelHow I Wrote This is created and hosted by Pamela HensleyPresented by Knockabout Media. Knockabout (1979) synopsis: “Two brothers and small time crooks Yipao and Taipao convince a martial arts expert to take them on as students, completely oblivious to his sordid past.”Starring: Yuen Biao, Ka-Yan Leung, Chia-Yung Liu, and Karl MakaDirector: Sammo HungThis week on Podcasting After Dark, Zak and Corey review the kung-fu cult classic, Knockabout! A truly jaw-dropping piece of cinema from the mind of Sammo Hung, and it's Yuen Biao's first leading role. Also, Knockabout is Zak and Corey's first true “karate man” movie on PAD, as Eddie Murphy would say in Trading Places lol! I mean, yes, they covered Hard Target and Cyborg, but this is on a whole other level, martial arts wise.A huge THANK YOU to Paulette for selecting Knockabout for us to review via our Patreon page! The Legacy of Hope Foundation Presents: Indigenous Roots and Hoots
In this special collaboration episode with Knockabout Media, host Soleil Launière interviews a variety of guests to discuss the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporation (PNIAI). Fifty years ago the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporation (PNIAI) transformed the art world forever. As part of Indigenous activism happening across the Americas in the 1970s, the “Indian Group of 7” (as they were dubbed by the press at the time) asserted First Nations artistic expressions and self-determination in the face of forced assimilation policies. Their goals: encourage other First Nations artists to paint, create space in national and commercial galleries for First Nations art, and inspire youth. From Expo 67 to their groundbreaking exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and beyond, learn more about the lives and artistic practices of the PNIAI and its members, and the Group's on-going influence, today. Supreme Court judge Paul Coghlan has spent more than 50 years investigating, prosecuting and judging serious crooks on serious crimes. Coghlan, the grandson of a Chinese merchant, innkeeper and opium dealer, became Director of Public Prosecutions during Melbourne's gangland war, brokering plea deals that cracked the underworld's wall of silence. From prosecuting a serial killer to pursuing a dodgy detective in one of Australia's first wire tap cases, Coghlan opens up to veteran crime reporter John Silvester in another episode of Naked City. And a heads-up, there's a language warning for this one. Become a subscriber: Your support powers our newsrooms and is critical for the sustainability of news coverage. He has represented Mick Gatto and Mark 'Chopper' Reid among other Melbourne gangland characters, but even as a school-kid, lawyer Bernie Balmer had an aversion to bullies. As a year 11 student he had a difference of opinion with a Brother at Assumption College who responded by punching the young Balmer in the face. Bernie, who would go on to be a more than handy heavyweight boxer, dropped the bully. While he was only defending himself, he was forced to leave under threat of expulsion. It still burns that some who knew the truth failed to stand up for him and perhaps that is one of the reasons he became a seven-day-a-week defence lawyer, often giving a voice to those who desperately need one. Balmer is respected on both sides of the law and has a unique insight into the criminal justice system. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode we tackle the strange and hilarious adventures of Orlando, the man who was until he wasn’t, and the strange gender explorations of the last 400 years of English rule. Also, a ton of great questions. leading to one of our beefier episodes! The VoIP Life about movie watching and criticism that we made free for everyone! https://www.patreon.com/posts/33203905Listener Shoumik sent in a list of Hong Kong movies that they recommend people check out! We haven’t vetted these, but hey, if you’re looking for suggestions this seems like a solid place to start. Thanks for the list!Kung Fu – Martial arts movies that are (broadly) set in the real world Knockabout (1979) – Before he became a breakout superstar, Jackie Chan was part of a trio with two other great martial arts performers, Yuen Baio and Sammo Hung. This movie is a showcase for Baio’s particular elegance Wheels on Meals (1984) – The trio worked together on several movies and this is one of my favorites because the back half is kinda Lupin III-ish Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984) – Gives you a great appreciation for how many stunts can be done with long sticks Once Upon a Time in China (1991) – A big historical epic, but with Jet Li in cool fightsWuxia – Martial arts movies with fantasy elements, often set in historic China Come Drink with Me (1966) – Director King Hu’s breakout hit has everything you could want from a movie, basically Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972) – What if a wuxia was also a ‘90s erotic thriller? Strange and nasty, but very good Green Snake (1993) – A classic Chinese fable but retold by the hugely influential Tsui Hark, who loves Looney Tunes humor and slightly subversive political themes Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) – Arguably the most famous martial arts movie ever is a big po-faced prestige production, but it’s also a love letter to the genre and surprisingly good Goodbye Dragon Inn (2003) – An art house movie only vaguely about watching martial arts movies, but it’s great!Crime – there are many good crime movies from Hong Kong, here are some of them My Heart Is That Eternal Rose (1989) – A very pretty detour by Patrick Tam, whose entire career was basically about making strange riffs on well-known genres Fallen Angels (1995) – A subplot of Wong Kar-Wai’s breakout international hit Chungking Express got turned into this darker, but just as kinetic little off-shoot Infernal Affairs (2002) – The meat and potatoes of a Hong Kong crime movie - good action with a Buddhist theme that I’m not well read enough to actually unpackJohnnie To and Milkyway – The prolific director has (by my count) the most straight bangers of any filmmaker since the turn of the century The Mission (1999) – To’s stock in trade – a simple crime movie, but with a better understanding of blocking and geometry than most action scenes in a couple of decades Fat Choi Spirit (2002) – A mahjong sports movie with super dramatic crane shots Exiled (2006) – All the assassins sent to kill each other end up having dinner, which is the essential vibe of all good bro movies Accident (2009) – An assassin who makes his hits look like accidents begins to suspect he’s the next target Romancing in Thin Air (2012) – One of To’s (several) great romance moviesMiscellaneous The Love Eterne (1963) – Alongside its martial arts flicks, Shaw Brothers was also very famous for its Huangmei Opera musicals. This is one of the best known 20 30 40 (2004) – What a Hong Kong ‘indie’ movie looks like, directed by Sylvia Chang A Simple Life (2011) – A family drama about the position of a live-in maid by director Ann Hui Chinese Odyssey 2002 (2002) – Hong Kong comedy is kinda hard to translate because it’s so pun-based, but this Prince and the Pauper-like story about cross-dressing romance comes across pretty wellSend us any email questions and comments about the movies we cover or movies in general to podcast@abnormalmapping.com!
