This week, we're joined by acclaimed comic book writer Todd Dezago! Known for his character-driven storytelling and gift for collaboration, Todd takes us behind the scenes of his influential run on Sensational Spider-Man with Mike Wieringo that redefined Peter Parker for a generation of readers. We explore the creation of their creator-owned fantasy epic Tellos, a vibrant world of swashbuckling adventure that showcased both creators at the height of their powers while tragically serving as one of Wieringo's final major works before his untimely passing. Todd shares candid insights about his unique collaborative process, from his work on Young Justice with Todd Nauck to partnering with Craig Rousseau on the all-ages gem The Perhapanauts—a supernatural investigation team that blends humor with heart. Professor Zoom has been defeated, Wally West has regained his top speed and put aside his insecurities about living up to Barry Allen's legacy, and Mark Waid's Flash is now a comic book to watch as 1993 turns into 1994. As rookie penciler Mike Wieringo comes aboard as new regular artist, Waid teams Wally up with Nightwing and Starfire (and his ex-girlfriend), puts the Flash on trial, and hints at the secret source of superspeed. We also meet breakout character Bart Allen, soon to be known as Impulse! We'll guide you through a chunk of issues that may not contain any six-issue epics, but it puts Wally on the path to maturity and makes his relationship with Linda Park into the focus of the series. Discussed in this episode: Flash #80-94 You can support this podcast at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

In this special bonus episode of the podcast, it's Mike Wieringo's birthday. While I never interviewed him for the original incarnation of the Pipeline Comics podcast, I did talk to his partner in "Tellos", Todd Dezago. In that interview, we discussed Tellos for a few minutes, and Ringo's "Captain Marvel" issue also gets a shout out. To listen to an actual Mike Wieringo interview, listen to his appearance on a very early episode of John Siuntres' Word Balloon podcast: http://www.wordballoon.com/media/WBmikewieringo.mp3 (http://www.wordballoon.com/media/WBmikewieringo.mp3) Todd Dezago Announces "Tellos" Compendium Edition: https://www.cbr.com/todd-dezago-announces-tellos-compendium-edition/ (https://www.cbr.com/todd-dezago-announces-tellos-compendium-edition/) Full Show Notes: https://PipelineComics.com/72B (PipelineComics.com/72B) Facebook Page: https://pipelinecomics.com/facebook (PipelineComics.com/facebook) Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/pipelinecomics (Twitter.com/pipelinecomics) Become a Pipeline Patron: https://pipelinecomics.com/patreon (PipelineComics.com/patreon) Email Me: augie@pipelinecomics.com Support this podcast

*UNLIKE* a certain introduction from a certain co-host, we'd like to list the cornucopia of accolades belonging to one Mr. Mark Waid: the winner of multiple Eisners (including Best Writer in 2012), a renaissance writer who's escorted almost every beloved superhero into the modern era, newly anointed Humanoids publisher, and quality human being. In this episode, Mark joins Brian, Keven, and Sean to discuss his runs on The Flash & Fantastic Four with Mike Wieringo as well as his medium-defining collaboration with Alex Ross, Kingdom Come.

Rogue and Remy finally shed their past sins, but is that enough to bring them closer together? We delve into the two Howard Mackie mini-series from the 1990s that defined the romance of the popular X-couple. It's a lot of comics to cover, but they are essential to the conversation if we're ever to join them in the next stage of their relationship. Gambit's past refuses to stay where it belongs, and Rogue refuses to let its murky shadow get in the way of the love she so desperately wants to partake in but is still struggling to accept herself. This is a hot and heavy melodrama, and we are here for it. Now, more than ever, we need the aid of Drs. Gottman and Abrams, and their relationship guide "Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love." What are the keys to listening? Putting judgment aside is essential. Being open and honest with who you were and who you are is crucial. The issues covered in this episode: "Gambit" Vol. 1 No. 1 - 4, written by Howard Mackie, penciled by Lee Weeks, inked by Klaus Janson, colored by Steve Buccellato, and lettered by Richard Starkings. Also, "Rogue" Vol. 1 No. 1 - 4, written by Howard Mackie, penciled by Mike Wieringo, inked by Terry Austin and Jason Gorder, colored by Dana Moreshead, Mike Thomas, and Digital Chameleon, and lettered by Richard Starkings and Comicraft. A few years ago we had the pleasure of at length about the massive project he was producing at the time, The Tellos Tribute books. It was during this episode that we really got a feel for how much of an impact the late Mike Wieringo had on so many different artists and creators. The outpouring of support and creativity that resulted in those books is a true testament to how much Mike meant to his friends and colleagues. Just a few months after we talked with Todd, The Baltimore Comic Con hosted the inaugural "Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards" aka "The Ringo Awards". Known as "", The Ringo Awards honor creators with categories that span the entire spectrum of comics both in print and digital format. This year is going to mark the 3rd annual event and the ceremony is set to take place during the 2019 Baltimore Comic Con in October. Our guest this week, Randy Tischler, is a representative of the Baltimore Comic Con and is a crucial player in the setup and production of The Ringo Awards. He gave us an in-depth look into the history of the ceremony and what it takes to put on an award show where the nomination ballot is determined not only by industry professionals, but by the fans as well! Nominees will be announced on August 21st and the official ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 19. As of this writing tickets to the awards are so if it's something you'd be interested in attending be sure to snag them quick! Enjoy! -Jr.

In this episode, Curt and Kevin continue their Fantastic Four-part series on the World's Greatest Comic Magazine with a discussion of the FF's greatest villain via two very different tales: The Fantastic Origin of Doctor Doom from Fantastic Four Annual #2, and Unthinkable, from Fantastic Four Vol. 3 #67-70 and #500, published by Marvel Comics! First, it's a quick time-hop back to the 1960s as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby recount the not-so-humble beginnings of everyone's favorite mad monarch, Victor Von Doom! In this week's ball-racing episode, J. David Weter But You Can Call Him Dave swings by to hang out with Magnus and continue His Excellency's This is the End mega series, which is all about that trend in the 90's when the main hero would die, get incapacitated or otherwise get chased out of his job in favor of someone else. Here at Trentus Magnus Punches Reality, our dedicated staff universally adore those stories (or else!). And, as long time loyal subjects learned from the beginning, what Magnus believes is the definitive statement as to what *IS*. This week, Dave and Magnus gab about all things Terminal Velocity. What did Mark Waid do right? What did his army of artists royally screw up? Does Terminal Velocity even count for the aforementioned "Let's replace the main hero" shtick? Dave and Magnus take turns pining for Mike Wieringo, analyzing story bits and having an open, balanced exchange concerning Dave's opinions about Impulse. No judgments are made, both points of view are validated and the mutual respect practically drips off the mp3 file containing this open exchange of equally valid ideas. At no time does one threaten to beat the other with a chair. Really! Honest! For those determined to ruin the Internet for everyone else by perpetuating click-bait on Facebook, "You won't believe what Dave says about Bart Allen!" Yes indeed, comics are read, fun is had and both sides get equal time as Magnus and Dave get swept away in Terminal Velocity's rather unexpected problems. Because of the virtual deluge of ball-stomping comic book talk, unfortunately there was just no time for listener feedback this week. But don't let that get you down! You can still offer your feeble effort at tribute! You humble serfs are always welcome to kiss your benevolent leader's ring. Corrupt DiManzocorp interns are ready, willing, able and eager to accept your bribe to present your meager missives to your wise emperor. The email address to use is trentusmagnus@gmail.com as the other seems to be having technical problems. In an another sublime act of truly unprecedented charity, the leader permits you lowly rabble to suggest topics for a future episode. Thus, petitions may be sent to trentusmagnus@gmail.com for DiManzocorp interns to review, whereupon your leader might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. And that's a promise!

In tribute to the life and career of master artist Mike Wieringo , Word Balloon presents this 2005 interview.Mike was the first comic creator to approach me about Word Balloon, rather than my attempting to contact them. He wanted to hear my interview with his friend Jeff Parker , but was having trouble downloading it. This afforded me the chance to get him to do this early WB chat.Ringo gives us an overview of his career from start to his then current work with Peter David on Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. We also talk about his Fantastic Four run with Mark Waid , Tellos, the series he co-created with Todd Dezago, and his DC work on Adventures Of Superman. Wieringo passed away this weekend, at the young age of 44. Way too soon for this incredible talent and all around good guy. Thanks for all the entertainment Mike , and rest in peace.John Siuntres
