Also: Greift ins Popcorn und lehnt Euch zurück. Schreibt uns ne Nachricht.

This episode, we jump feet first into the filmography of Ringo Lam and review his brutal and bloody kung fu film, Burning Paradise! The review soon turns into a discussion comparing martial arts cinema fans to non-martial arts cinema fans and I think some really interesting points were brought up. Later, we answer listener questions including, "When is movie violence too much?" and Devan gives us the funniest way of winning an MMA fight. Enjoy!

He's been called Hong Kong's King of Cool, and indeed there's no one cooler than Chow Yun-Fat. From blasting onto the screen as the pistol packing gangster Mark Gor in John Woo's A BETTER TOMORROW, to other Woo classics such as THE KILLER, and HARD-BOILED, Chow Yun-Fat was the greatest Hong Kong icon since perhaps Bruce Lee. His career in the eighties and nineties was storied, with leading roles in "heroic bloodshed" action pics like FULL CONTACT, GOD OF GAMBLERS and Ringo Lam's "ON FIRE" trilogy, CITY ON FIRE, PRISON ON FIRE and PRISON ON FIRE 2. He then made a breakthrough into North America with THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON and more. But in recent years, Chow Yun-Fat has been on the down-low. Despite starring in some of the most financially successful Chinese movies of the last decade or so, even since PROJECT GUTENBERG, he's been inactive. What happened? We try to get to the bottom of it in WTF Happened to Chow Yun-Fat!

In this episode of the show, we are marking the 30th anniversary of the premiere of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs by talking about one of the more important pieces of inspiration behind his auspicious debut, Ringo Lam's City on Fire. Over the course of our wild conversation you will hear us talk about the rogue Hong Kong filmmaking pilosophy, the many points of symmetry between Lam and Tarantino, the haphazardly innocent direction of Lam's giving the movie a homemade feel, Chow Yun-fat's unsung charisma, the characteristic tonal inconsistencies giving City on Fire its unique character and much more. When people talk about Hong Kong action films of the 80s and 90s, John Woo and Jackie Chan are usually at the forefront of the conversation, but Ringo Lam also released some amazing films during that time. For example, Full Contact, the dark, grimy and crazy 1992 classic that serves as an evil twin to the glossy and sleek Hard Boiled. Henry Gilbert from Talking Simpsons stops by to talk about this unjustly forgotten bloody masterpiece.
When Philip Ng burst onto the scene in his 2014 leading-man debut, 'Once Upon a Time in Shanghai' - co-starring Sammo Hung and with fight choreography by Yuen Woo-ping - followed by his turn as Bruce Lee in the 2016 Hollywood biopic, 'Birth of the Dragon', the kung fu movie world was introduced to a wonderful new talent. In reality, of course, Philip's story of overnight success could not have been further from the truth. Since the early 2000s - when Philip decided to leave his home in Chicago to pursue a career in Hong Kong action cinema - he had been working tirelessly both in front and behind the camera, developing his skills as an action director and actor. He has become a leading light in a new generation of Hong Kong actors adept at sharing the screen with everyone from Donnie Yen to Simon Yam, Jackie Chan to Louis Koo, and working with directors as diverse as Ringo Lam, Stephen Fung, Benny Chan and Wong Jing. His 2019 martial arts film, 'Undercover Punch and Gun' - which is out now in North America courtesy of Well Go USA - is a love letter to the sort of Hong Kong action comedies he grew up watching in the 1980s and 90s. It sees him reunite with his long-time buddies and frequent collaborators, Andy On and Van Ness Wu. As well as being a fight-filled homage to the golden age of Hong Kong action movies, the film is equally dedicated to the three actors' friendship, which first started back in 2003 on the tournament movie, 'Star Runner'. Listen as Philip discusses his journey from an aspiring young martial artist into a fully fledged kung fu film star - and the ups and downs he has experienced along the way. The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... Week 5: The Killer Spine Number: 8 Director: John Woo Genre: Hong Kong Action There was a time when I thought America knew how to make an action movie. We had some great one, really we did. Little did I know that on the other side of the world there was a group of insane visionaries who were churning out some of the most amazing, gorgeous, violent works of cinema imaginable. Names like Woo, Lam, Hark, Chan, Li, Jing, and Fat were working on movies that would, for a certain group of filmmakers and film lovers, define the aesthetic of what action/crime movie would soon become. They were The Beatles for a generation of filmmakers. You might not know or like their music, but your favorite band... they do. Or your favorite band's favorite band. In some way the work that was don in Hong Kong in the mid to late 80's and into the 90's is a fundamental part of the DNA of modern American film making. You like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction? Then you like Ringo Lam and John Woo. You like El Mariachi and Desperado? Then you like John Woo and Tsui Hark. If you knew about these movies and people before... congratulations, you're one of us. You had a local video store that wasn't a Blockbuster of Hollywood Video that was a huge part of your life. You knew the satisfaction of watching a hard core bootlegged video that still had the "play" and "record" graphics on the beginning of it. You have watched movies that had ads for soy sauce and karaoke machines instead of previews. You were there, man! So, join us in our first of two weeks of exploring the wonder of John Woo and the video store culture that is so sorely lacking from today's landscape. And join us next week for some totally over the top, ape scat action that you are not ready for! Next week: Spine Number 9: John Woo's "Hard Boiled" Also, check this out. http://fantasymovieleague.com/ Looks like Summer Movie League has officially become Fantasy Movie League. It looks quite fun. Here's how it works. You have an 8 screen theater. Every week you pick movies and have a budget/salary cap you have to stay under. Then you compete against other theaters in your league. It's fantasy football for movie people. Our league is Film Thugs 2015 and the password is Porterhouse. And remember, you can be a part of the show any time you wild like. How's that? All you have to do is call or e-mail us. If you live in the US, or any place that makes calling the US easy, just dial 512-666-RANT and leave us a voicemail. We will read the Google Voice transcript and play your message. It's both funny AND informative. If you live outside the US you can call us on Skype at The_Film_Thugs. You can leave a message, or someone might actually answer. E-mail us at thefilmthugs@gmail.com and we will read/play whatever you send us, or you can e-mail thugquestions@gmail.com to be part of an upcoming "Ask the Film Thugs" show, where we answer questions on any subject without having heard them first. Also, we are on twitter @thefilmthugs and on Facebook and Vine. You can also click on one of our sponsor links below and THEY will pay us. That's right. You won't have to pay a PENNY extra, and Amazon/Onnit/Teefury will give us a little taste. Also, be sure to check back often for our new endeavor The Life Masters, where we answer questions to other advice columnists. Thanks for listening, and until next week... Jim out.

M: Here's an interview with Gena Rowlands & Cassavetes about ‘Woman Under The Influence' at AFI (of which Cassavetes became a “student” through Fellowships they offered so that he could get funding and crew). Both Morgan and Sean watched The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976, re-released in 1978), directed by Cassavetes, starring Ben Gazarra, Timothy Carey, Seymour Cassel, Azizi Johan, Al Ruban, and Haji. M: Recommended reading Cassavetes On Cassavetes by Ron Carney. It's an amazing collection of interviews and essays the move chronologically through his filmography. Anything that I could add here is better articulated by the man himself. If you're thinking about going to film school, don't. Go buy a copy of this book. M: Director Michael Ventura documented the making of Love Streams in the doc “I'm Almost Not Crazy…” (a great bit of dialogue delivered by Gena Rowlands in the film) More so than any of his other films, and perhaps underlined by Cassavete's health, Love Streams echoes back to and mirrors many of his previous films. Mabel from ‘Influence', elements of which appear in Richard and Sarah. Cassavetes/Rowlands interrogating their own relationship through avatars or playing characters themselves. The dissolution of the marriage consummated in ‘Minnie & Moskowitz'. Characters perceived as “crazy” by those around them. Love. Love. Love? Love. Where to put it. What happens when it goes away. Is it constant? Though this wasn't his last film—that was the terrible work-for-hire ‘Big Trouble'—-Cassavetes thought of it as summation of his life's work. 1:17:24 - 1:38:20 - Hottest Film Directors Rankings: Nominations include: David Cronenberg, John Cassavetes, Antoine Fuqua, Shane Carruth, John Sayles, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Zack Snyder, Ringo Lam, David Lynch, Cary Fukunaga, Roger Corman, David Fincher, Kathyrn Bigelow, Anne Banecroft, Claire Denis, Paul Thomas Anderson, John Waters, Noah Baumbach, Sofia Coppola, Steve McQueen, William Friedkin, Sylvester Stallone, Amy Seimetz, Robert Rodriguez, and Renny Harlin.
