Also: Greift ins Popcorn und lehnt Euch zurück. Schreibt uns ne Nachricht.

He's been called Hong Kong's King of Cool, and indeed there's no one cooler than Chow Yun-Fat. From blasting onto the screen as the pistol packing gangster Mark Gor in John Woo's A BETTER TOMORROW, to other Woo classics such as THE KILLER, and HARD-BOILED, Chow Yun-Fat was the greatest Hong Kong icon since perhaps Bruce Lee. His career in the eighties and nineties was storied, with leading roles in "heroic bloodshed" action pics like FULL CONTACT, GOD OF GAMBLERS and Ringo Lam's "ON FIRE" trilogy, CITY ON FIRE, PRISON ON FIRE and PRISON ON FIRE 2. He then made a breakthrough into North America with THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON and more. But in recent years, Chow Yun-Fat has been on the down-low. Despite starring in some of the most financially successful Chinese movies of the last decade or so, even since PROJECT GUTENBERG, he's been inactive. What happened? We try to get to the bottom of it in WTF Happened to Chow Yun-Fat!

In this episode of the show, we are marking the 30th anniversary of the premiere of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs by talking about one of the more important pieces of inspiration behind his auspicious debut, Ringo Lam's City on Fire. Over the course of our wild conversation you will hear us talk about the rogue Hong Kong filmmaking pilosophy, the many points of symmetry between Lam and Tarantino, the haphazardly innocent direction of Lam's giving the movie a homemade feel, Chow Yun-fat's unsung charisma, the characteristic tonal inconsistencies giving City on Fire its unique character and much more. When people talk about Hong Kong action films of the 80s and 90s, John Woo and Jackie Chan are usually at the forefront of the conversation, but Ringo Lam also released some amazing films during that time. For example, Full Contact, the dark, grimy and crazy 1992 classic that serves as an evil twin to the glossy and sleek Hard Boiled. Henry Gilbert from Talking Simpsons stops by to talk about this unjustly forgotten bloody masterpiece.
When Philip Ng burst onto the scene in his 2014 leading-man debut, 'Once Upon a Time in Shanghai' - co-starring Sammo Hung and with fight choreography by Yuen Woo-ping - followed by his turn as Bruce Lee in the 2016 Hollywood biopic, 'Birth of the Dragon', the kung fu movie world was introduced to a wonderful new talent. In reality, of course, Philip's story of overnight success could not have been further from the truth. Since the early 2000s - when Philip decided to leave his home in Chicago to pursue a career in Hong Kong action cinema - he had been working tirelessly both in front and behind the camera, developing his skills as an action director and actor. He has become a leading light in a new generation of Hong Kong actors adept at sharing the screen with everyone from Donnie Yen to Simon Yam, Jackie Chan to Louis Koo, and working with directors as diverse as Ringo Lam, Stephen Fung, Benny Chan and Wong Jing. His 2019 martial arts film, 'Undercover Punch and Gun' - which is out now in North America courtesy of Well Go USA - is a love letter to the sort of Hong Kong action comedies he grew up watching in the 1980s and 90s. It sees him reunite with his long-time buddies and frequent collaborators, Andy On and Van Ness Wu. As well as being a fight-filled homage to the golden age of Hong Kong action movies, the film is equally dedicated to the three actors' friendship, which first started back in 2003 on the tournament movie, 'Star Runner'. Is "In Hell" a metaphorical musing on the pervasiveness and all encompassing dangers of toxic masculinity that affects every single person that comes in contact with it? Is the hell that the title speaks of: a world in which we are all sentenced to a predetermined prison of violence and patriarchy at the hands of many others and sometimes even ourselves included? Milenko seems to think this is the case. Listen as Milenko makes the case for his thesis to a more skeptical Aleks. Listen to the bros dissect veteran JCVD director Ringo Lam's final film with the actor. Classic prison movie set up with many familiar (and sometimes unfortunate) tropes. However this film is able to transcend some tropes as it reaches for greatness ultimately failing, but making a valiant effort. A more heady ep from the bros. Join the brothers as they discuss fan fav: Replicant: Ringo Lam's second double trouble outing with JCVD. Despite this being a Jean Claude podcast this movie is memorable for being a Michael Rooker vehicle. Michael Rooker of course being a celebrated cult movie actor that the brothers thoroughly enjoy and a guy that Aleks does an impeccable impression of. Fast forward through the first 10 mins of Alex Jones impressions and casual musings on the damaging effects of right wing media. How is Alex Jones similar to Corey Taylor from Slipknot? Listen to find out. Back to the movie tho... Ringo Lam's pseudo-scfi action romp doesn't live up to the legendary status of Maximum Risk, but tests the range limitations of its wonderful cast. An extremely watchable highly kinetic film that the brothers loved. Not an episode to miss! T4M: The internet’s best JCVD podcast Please involve yourselves in BLM initiatives. 2020 is finally over! We're so excited because that means it's officially Jean-Claude Van January over at SLUGFEST. Our first stop on the Muscles from Brussels world tour is a secluded Russian Prison, to watch 2003's In Hell, directed by Ringo Lam. Its got guns, knives, car chases, incinerations, fighting tournaments, and JCVD learning to escape the most dangerous prison of all... his mind. To be honest, In Hell should also probably should come with a trigger warning. Like the show? Help us out! Listen, rate, review, and share our show over at Apple Podcasts or over on Spotify.

Adam Lippe, born in March of 1978 in New York City, is a writer-producer-director living in Phoenixville, PA. His interest in film began early on, and he began writing film criticism at the age of 15 while attending Riverdale Country School, first in direct competition with his school newspaper, and eventually for the paper itself. He made his first movie, The Stranger, a dark, satirical drama, at the age of 16. The film was wildly ambitious, especially in terms of its multi-layered soundtrack, forcing him to constantly have to create workarounds for the primitive editing equipment that the school had available. In college, both at Hampshire and Emerson College, Adam continued his interest in macabre humor, making short films and music videos, as well as directing live television versions of his comedic sketches. After returning to film criticism in 2002, writing for various magazines and websites, he became a full time critic and columnist in 2008, first for the Columbus, Ohio paper Outlook Weekly, and then his own website, A Regrettable Moment of Sincerity, in 2009. That led to his reviews appearing on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming a member of the Online Film Critics Society, as well as being named one of the top film critics in America while being featured in a TV ad for Examiner.com appearing all over the country. During that highly prolific period, Adam started Medium Rare Cinema, a weekly film series hosted at a local movie theater (though the movies were projected from video sources), comprised entirely of films not available for viewing in the USA. This involved tracking down the rights holders for each film and clearing them for public screening, putting together trailer compilations and short films that related to each film and writing a lengthy essay about each and every film screened. Eventually this meant obtaining rare footage and re-creating director’s cuts that were never released either due to censorship or studio interference. Films by directors like John Woo, John Boorman, Ringo Lam, and Gillo Pontecorvo had their films completely transformed, which not only involved combining different sources and color correcting, but often completely re-writing a film’s subtitles to improve the quality of the translation. Beginning in 2013, Adam began writing a horror-comedy, Wait, Wait, Don’t Kill Me, about a mysterious virus that gets loose in inner-city Philadelphia. When the government tries to shut down the spread and realizes they can’t, they decide to fence off the locals and let everyone die. Slowly, but surely, Adam secured financing and cast the movie out of New York, shooting the SAG New Media film in Philadelphia. The completed movie, which Adam wrote, produced and directed, features 40 locations, 45 speaking parts and more than 100 extras, was shot in fits and starts over a period of several years. The film also incorporates footage shot both during the Pope’s and the DNC’s visit to Philadelphia, which coincidentally supported the movie’s notion of a city being blocked off by elaborate fences and large amounts of security. Wait, Wait, Don’t Kill Me was completed in late March 2020, amidst an actual worldwide viral pandemic, and has secured distribution.

Podcast herunterladen

FAN DAMME #3! "I can find a penguin in a sand storm."
We discuss the career of director Ringo Lam and his films City on Fire, School on Fire, and Maximum Risk. A History of Violence (2005) geht.
Reservoir Dogs & City on Fire - Tarantino and the late Ringo Lam On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I sit down to look back on Quentin Tarantino's debut, the Classic Reservoir Dogs. We look at the film, but also it's importance as a game-changer in the early 90s. We discuss the performances of Lawrence Tierney, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Edward Bunker, and - of course - Harvey Keitel. We also take a look at Ringo Lam's 1987 Hong Kong classic, City on Fire starring the great Chow Yun-Fat. Basically two friends remembering a great and highly influential film while going back and forth regarding it's importance. This was a fun time on the mics. Take a listen and let us know what you think - gondoramos@yahoo.com. Thanks for your continued love and support.
We welcome back Ringo Lam to the directing chair, he goes into the beating heart of the city, mixing Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and the result is yet another Louis Koo vehicle, the chase for a girl, and a bag of cash. This is the closing episode of The Director’s Series on Ringo Lam, and we […]

This week we are joined by actor and voice impersonator Sebastian Knapp to discuss the influences behind Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) - SPOILER WARNING. First up is the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), a solid, no nonsense, authentic Sunday afternoon watch with Robert Shaw’s gang sparring against transit cop Walter Matthau. Next, John Carpenter’s under-appreciated (at the time) exercise in blending empty agoraphobia and paranoid claustrophobia The Thing (1982) puts eight guys in a room and gives them a reason to chop each other up. We finish with the one film that is less of an influence and more like a template, Ringo Lam’s City on Fire (1987), with direct plot and scene lifts. Also: Dee starts with a Pat Roach apology. The Canadian TV remake beats the all-star remake. New York isn’t just a place, it’s an attitude. Playing ping pong. Rob Bottin and Stan Winston team up to make you sick. Swedish ≠ Norwegian. The DFA fade. Joe mistakes the matte painting work of Albert Whitlock for Mike Pangrazio. The Thing video game. “Tracking’s touchy”. Shot for shot copies. Toby. Toby. Toby? We’re looking for a Buscemi type. Joe’s dog might be a Thing. Doesthedogdie.com. We play a game of “Tarantin-oh-that’s-where-I-recognise-it-from!” We fall down a Die Hard tangent.

Ringo drops social and realistic content for heroic bloodshed his particular violent way. But he’s not resorting to making a melodramatic time with brotherhood and revenge at the forefront. The film was based on the short story "The Hypnotist" by Tod Browning, who also directed the film. London After Midnight starred Lon Chaney, Marceline Day, Conrad Nagel, Henry B. Walthall, and Polly Moran. The movie is now lost and remains one of the most famous and eagerly sought after of all lost films. The last known copy was destroyed in the 1967 MGM Vault fire. He has directed over ninety theatrical, video, and television productions since his debut in 1991. Miike is credited with directing fifteen productions in the years 2001 and 2002 alone. His films range from violent and bizarre to dramatic and family-friendly.-- Park Chan Wook- is a South Korean film director, screenwriter, producer, and former film critic. One of the most acclaimed and popular filmmakers in his native country, Park is most known for his films Joint Security Area, Thirst and what has become known as The Vengeance Trilogy, consisting of 2002's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, 2003's Oldboy and 2005's Lady Vengeance. His films are noted for their immaculate framing, black humor and often brutal subject matter.-- Visitor Q - The film's plot is often compared to Pier Paolo Pasolini's Teorema, in which a strange visitor to a wealthy family seduces the maid, the son, the mother, the daughter, and finally the father, before leaving a few days after, subsequently changing their lives.-- Audition - a 1999 Japanese horror film, based on the novel of the same name, directed by Takashi Miike. After interviewing several women, Aoyama becomes interested in Asami (Eihi Shiina), who responds well to him, although as they begin to date, her dark past begins to affect their relationship.-- 13 Assassins - Cult director Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition) delivers a bravado period action film set at the end of Japan's feudal era. 13 Assassins - a masterful exercise in cinematic butchery (New York Post) is centered around a group of elite samurai who are secretly enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord in order to prevent him from ascending to the throne and plunging the country into a war torn future.-- New York Asian Film Festival - In 2002, Subway Cinema launched its flagship event, the annual New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which has been presented in collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center since 2010. Born in Hong Kong in 1955, Lam initially went to an acting school. After finding he preferred making films to acting, he went to Canada to study film. In 1983, he returned and began filming comedy films. After the commercial success of his film Aces Go Places IV, he was allowed to develop his own film. Lam directed City on Fire in 1987, which led him to winning his first Hong Kong Film Award, and has been extensively referenced as the fundamental inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's first film, Reservoir Dogs.-- City on Fire - a 1987 Hong Kong crime film written, produced and directed by Ringo Lam, and starring Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee and Sun Yueh. Following A Better Tomorrow (1986), it helped establish Chow's popularity as an action star in Asia, and to a lesser degree, North America.-- Reservoir Dogs - is a 1992 American crime thriller film that depicts the events before and after a botched diamond heist. The film was the feature-length debut of writer and director Quentin Tarantino, and stars Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi, Chris Penn, Lawrence Tierney, and Tim Roth. It incorporates many themes that have become Tarantino's hallmarks: violent crime, pop culture references, profanity, and nonlinear storytelling.-- Pulp Fiction - is a 1994 American black comedy neo-noir crime film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, from a story by Tarantino and Roger Avary. Directed in a highly stylized manner, Pulp Fiction connects the intersecting storylines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, small-time criminals, and a mysterious briefcase. The film's title refers to the pulp magazines and hardboiled crime novels popular during the mid-20th century, known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue.-- The French Connection & The Exorcist - This is what I was referring to in the podcast. A professor argued that this is the greatest, '1-2 punch' in cinema history.-- Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl - Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl is the terrifying story of two classic monsters re-imagined as super hot - and super lethal - Japanese school girls. Ringo Lam levererar goda grejer!

The Criterion Collection, the last vestige of truly collectible DVD and Blu-Ray movies in existence. These are well produced, fancy pants editions of important and interesting films for the discerning film lover. We continue our journey through Jim's collection of movies with... Week 5: The Killer Spine Number: 8 Director: John Woo Genre: Hong Kong Action There was a time when I thought America knew how to make an action movie. We had some great one, really we did. Little did I know that on the other side of the world there was a group of insane visionaries who were churning out some of the most amazing, gorgeous, violent works of cinema imaginable. Names like Woo, Lam, Hark, Chan, Li, Jing, and Fat were working on movies that would, for a certain group of filmmakers and film lovers, define the aesthetic of what action/crime movie would soon become. They were The Beatles for a generation of filmmakers. You might not know or like their music, but your favorite band... they do. Or your favorite band's favorite band. In some way the work that was don in Hong Kong in the mid to late 80's and into the 90's is a fundamental part of the DNA of modern American film making. You like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction? Then you like Ringo Lam and John Woo. You like El Mariachi and Desperado? Then you like John Woo and Tsui Hark. If you knew about these movies and people before... congratulations, you're one of us. You had a local video store that wasn't a Blockbuster of Hollywood Video that was a huge part of your life. You knew the satisfaction of watching a hard core bootlegged video that still had the "play" and "record" graphics on the beginning of it. You have watched movies that had ads for soy sauce and karaoke machines instead of previews. You were there, man! So, join us in our first of two weeks of exploring the wonder of John Woo and the video store culture that is so sorely lacking from today's landscape. And join us next week for some totally over the top, ape scat action that you are not ready for! Next week: Spine Number 9: John Woo's "Hard Boiled" Also, check this out. http://fantasymovieleague.com/ Looks like Summer Movie League has officially become Fantasy Movie League. It looks quite fun. Here's how it works. You have an 8 screen theater. Every week you pick movies and have a budget/salary cap you have to stay under. Then you compete against other theaters in your league. It's fantasy football for movie people. Our league is Film Thugs 2015 and the password is Porterhouse. And remember, you can be a part of the show any time you wild like. How's that? All you have to do is call or e-mail us. If you live in the US, or any place that makes calling the US easy, just dial 512-666-RANT and leave us a voicemail.
