This episode navigates this question using an associative method which links stories and sounds, forming a non-linear audio collage. Listeners are invited to tune in to their affective and embodied responses to end time stories including Lulu Miller's podcast and Kiyoshi Kurosawa's horror film, and stories of endurance, with Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner's poem and Tanya Tagaq's audiobook.Nadège Paquette (she/they) is a white settler living in Tiotià:ke/Montréal, on the lands and waters of the Kanien'kehá:ka Nation, where they are completing a master's degree in English Literature at Concordia University. Their research interests aggregate around the relationship between human and nonhuman forms of life and nonlife. They are drawn to narratives of the future extrapolating present troubles and delving into already-existing Indigenous, decolonial, queer, and non-anthropocentric alternatives to a colonial and capitalist world. For them, some of those alternative worlds take the form of collective gardens where they love to work with plants, soil, water, animal, and human neighbors.*Show NotesMusic:Tom Bonheur https://www.instagram.com/dj.g3ntil/Kovd, Kvelden, Tell What You Know, Ivory Pillow, and Fever Creep by Blue Dot Sessions https://app.sessions.blue/Podcast:“The Wordless Place” Lulu Miller https://radiolab.org/podcast/wordless-place“Why Podcast?” Hannah McGregor and Stacey Copeland https://kairos.technorhetoric.net/27.1/topoi/mcgregor-copeland/index.htmlShort Film:Anointed, Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner and Dan Lin https://www.kathyjetnilkijiner.com/videos-featuring-kathy/Film:Pulse, Kiyoshi KurosawaAdditional sounds from:“Interview with Tanya Tagaq,” Alicia Atout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FupatQbcTeM“Open Dialogues: Daniel Heath Justice,” Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrBN8_IGuuw“Monster 怪物,” United for Peace Film Festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8OJulGi1Rg*Works CitedBouich, Abdenour. 2021. “Coeval Worlds, Alter/Native Words.” Transmotion 7 (2). https://doi.org/10.22024/UniKent/03/tm.980.Butler, Judith. 2003. “Violence, Mourning, Politics.” Studies in Gender and Sexuality 4 (1): 9–37. https://doi.org/10.1080/15240650409349213.Chion, Michel. 2017. Getting to have a full understanding of those who lived here before us is just so very vital....On this very special episode we dive into a vital docu-series which is now on CBC Gem. It's time for 'Telling Our Story'.From page one of the history books, the notion that the First Nations were “discovered.” is a little ridiculous. In a sardonic look back, we're told that the Europeans were the ones who were discovered, starving on their boats, with Jacques Cartier losing 11 men to scurvy before being given a vitamin-laden conifer tea by Iroquois Chief Donnacona. With this starting point, turning history right-side up, Telling Our Story connects beautiful natural scenery with tales and traditions and eloquent and charismatic protagonists from 11 First Peoples – 11 cultures speaking 11 different languages – who inhabited what's now Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. They are: Abenaki, Anishinaabe, Atikamekw, Cree of Eeyou Istchee, Innu, Inuit, Kanien'kehá:ka, Mi'kmaq, Naskapi, Huron-Wendat and Wolastoqiyik. Their stories are, in turn, heart-warming, heartbreaking, hopeful and absolutely vital..After it's premiere at TIFF we had the unique pleasure of sitting down with director Kim O'Bomswain about the origins of the project, the multi-platform nature of it all, being able to experience mass audience reactions at a festival like TIFF and so very much more.Telling Our Story is streaming on CBC Gem now.
An interview with author and activist Philippe Blouin who was a co-editor of the important collection "The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival." The project is described this way: "The first collection of its kind, this anthology by members of the Mohawk Warrior Society uncovers a hidden history and paints a bold portrait of the spectacular experience of Kanien'kehá:ka survival and self-defense. Providing extensive documentation, context, and analysis, the book features foundational writings by prolific visual artist and polemicist Louis Karoniaktajeh Hall (1918–1993)—such as his landmark 1979 pamphlet, The Warrior's Handbook, as well as selections of his pioneering artwork. This book contains new oral history by key figures of the Rotisken'rhakéhte's revival in the 1970s, and tells the story of the Warriors' famous flag, their armed occupation of Ganienkeh in 1974, and the role of their constitution, the Great Peace, in guiding their commitment to freedom and independence. We hear directly the story of how the Kanien'kehá:ka Longhouse became one the most militant resistance groups in North America, gaining international attention with the Oka Crisis of 1990. This auto-history of the Rotisken'rhakéhte is complemented by a Mohawk history timeline from colonization to the present, a glossary of Mohawk political philosophy, and a new map of Iroquoia in Mohawk language. At last, the Mohawk Warriors can tell their own story with their own voices, and to serve as an example and inspiration for future generations struggling against the environmental, cultural, and social devastation cast upon the modern world." The Mohawk Warrior Society is one of the most successful militant organizations in North America. Their predecessors were key to the defeat of the French in Quebec and the United States in the War of 1812. Today, the Warriors are best known for their role in the 1990 Oka standoff against the Canadian army. In the new book, The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival, the movement for the first time tells its own history. We are joined by the editors of this unique anthology of resistance, Philippe Blouin, Matt Peterson, Malek Rasamny and Kahentinetha Rotiskarewake and also by Kwetiio and Karennatha who, along with Kahentinetha, are members of the group Kanien'kehà:ka Kanistansera, the Mohawk Mothers.

In this episode we have a roundtable discussion grounded around the book The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival. For this discussion we have all four of the editors of this book, Philippe Blouin, Matt Peterson, Malek Rasamny and Kahentinetha Rotsikarewake. In addition Karennatha and Kawenaa, two other members of Kanien'keha:ka Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) joined the conversation. The book we discuss does a lot of things. It presents the works of Louis Karoniaktajeh Hall, it discusses what the Mohawk Warrior Society is, and Louis Hall's influence and participation and activation of that movement as an autonomous political force. It also discusses some of the history of their vibrant and at times quite successful struggles against colonialism, but also against forces of assimilation, annihilation, and appropriation. The book also provides a number of resources to help understand the philosophy embedded in Mohawk language and thought, in which the Mohawk Warrior Society is grounded. This is a sovereign tradition of anticolonial resistance to genocide that crosses the imposed colonial borders of the US and Canada, and still exists in defiance of setter law and ways of knowing. As is discussed in the show, it is also potentially a guide or an offering. The Mohawk Warrior Society has out of necessity often been a somewhat secretive formation, this book and conversation offer a glimpse into their world view, and it's incumbent upon us to listen in and take note. This virtual roundtable features six guests. Due to time constraints there is just a lot that we weren't able to get to in this conversation and so we really encourage folks to pick up the book and read it. We'll include links in the show notes. The book's editors and our guests are: Kahentinetha Rotiskarewake is a Kanien'kehá:ka (Gon-e-en-gay-ha-ga) from the Bear Clan in Kahnawà:ke. Initially working in the fashion industry, Kahentinetha went on to play a key role as speaker and writer in the Indigenous resistance, a role which she has fulfilled consistently for the last six decades. During this time, she witnessed and took part in numerous struggles, including the blockade of the Akwesasne border crossing in 1968. She has published several books, including Mohawk Warrior Three: The Trial of Lasagna, Noriega & 20–20 (Owera Books, 1994), and has been in charge of running the Mohawk Nation News service since the Oka Crisis in 1990. She now cares for her twenty children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kahentinetha means she who is always at the forefront. Philippe Blouin writes, translates and studies political anthropology and philosophy in Tionitiohtià:kon (Montréal). His current PhD research at McGill University seeks to understand and share the teachings of the Teiohá:te (Two Row Wampum) to build decolonial alliances. His work has been published in Liaisons, Stasis and PoLAR. He also wrote an afterword to George Sorel's Reflections on Violence. Matt Peterson is an organizer at Woodbine, an experimental space in New York City. He is the co-director of The Native and the Refugee, multimedia documentary project on American Indian reservations and Palestinian refugee camps. Malek Rasamny co-directed the research project The Native and the Refugee and the feature film Spaces of Exception. He is currently a doctoral candidate in the department of Social Anthropology and Ethnology at the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. And as I said Karennatha and Kawenaa who are two other members of Kanien'keha:ka Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) joined the conversation as well. It was an honor to host them. Transcript available here. Hey, kids! After some much-needed rest, we're coming back next month with new episodes! In the meantime, don't get caught up in the capitalist sensation of much of the New Year "self-improvement" mindset. Instead, we recommend using this time as a reminder to prioritize wellbeing and care. As such, we're bringing back this conversation from Season 2, where we discuss what self care is (and is not) with Patricia Petit-Liang, host of Fatal Attraction on CJLO 1690AM.-----Do The Kids Know? is a weekly series of discussions between community workers, Prakash and Kristen, that unpack race, media, popular culture, and politics in KKKanada (That's Canada spelled with three K's) from an anti-colonial perspective. Our goal is to bring nuance to sensationalist media as well as to uncover the ways in which white supremacy, capitalism, and colonialism is shaping our movements and behaviours. Our tenth 'MINI' INDIGENA of the season runs the gamut as usual, with MEDIA INDIGENA regulars Ken Williams (assistant professor with the University of Alberta's department of drama) and Kim TallBear (U of A professor in the Faculty of Native Studies) joining host/producer Rick Harp Saturday, June 11 via the Callin app to discuss... • Riffing off “an African sense of western gender discourses” (as detailed in the book The Invention of Women by Oyeronke Oyewumi), Kim wants to know what Rick and Ken's dating dealbreakers are; • Ken delves into the story of Cree/Métis scholar Réal Carrière, who told CBC he was rejected for a job by higher-ups at the University of Saskatchewan—despite the wishes of a mostly Indigenous hiring committee—due to a lack of documentation; • Boardgaming nerd Rick shares news sent his way about Ezhishin, the “first-ever conference on Native North American typography” set for this November; • monthly Patreon podcast supporter Mark asks us to discuss Bill 96, the new Quebec language law which will effectively require English-schooled students “of Kanien'kehá:ka, Cree, Inuit and Algonquin ancestry … to master two colonial languages to attain a college degree”

Giles is back in corduroy with some new potential slayer step-sisters, Drusilla as The First is wriggling and giggling about, Xander and Andrew *cannot* stop flirting, and Turok-Han is really, really strong. “There is no accurate picture” of how many indigenous people have been murdered or gone missing in Colorado, according to our guest today, Raven Payment. Amid a growing, international movement to address the crisis of MMIR — Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives — she helped form a task force to take on the issue locally. Step one? Push for legislation to create a state office that can figure out exactly how big this problem even is. Today on the show, Host Bree Davies talks with Payment, who identifies as Kanien'kehá:ka and Anishinaabe, about her work on the task force and how the creation of this office could help Indigenous people all across Colorado. Our guest Raven Payment mentions a couple of times how the Urban Indian Health Institute's 2017 report on MMRI was a catalyst for organizing around this issue. If you're interested, here's a link to that report: https://www.uihi.org/resources/missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-girls/ 30,000 hippies are descending on an as-yet-undisclosed location in Colorado this summer. It's an annual event called the Rainbow Gathering, and it's got lots of folks really worried. Dear friend of the pod Helen Zalztman (The Allusionist, Answer Me This!) joins us today for a deep dive into linguistics in Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Why does Giles' leatherbound book use a "Y" in Vampyre? Why does television rely so heavily on Latin to convey magic spells? Where does the word "coven" originate? Did Buffy coin the term "wiggins"?! In the words of one Jenny Owen Youngs, wow wow wow Wow WOW. We celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Torrance High School, aka Sunnydale High, with hundreds of your beautiful nerdy faces — and it was one of the best nights of our damn lives. We are going through some of our favorite high-school moments from Buffy, including the infamous Oedipus Rex performance at the end of "The Puppet Show," (17:22) the meeting of The Mayor, Faith, Buffy, Angel and everyone else in "Choices," (33:12) and that romantically terrifying lovers-to-ghosts possession in "I Only Have Eyes For You" (55:14). Oh, and then we prove that Buffy and Faith absolutely totally entirely had sex with each other (1:10:20). It was truly a night for the books.+ THE BUFFY + FAITH HAD SEX PowerPoint PresentationTODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO WATCH US LIVE: 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF BUFFY AT SUNNYDALE HIGHAn epic evening of live music, conversation, special guests, and oh-so-much laughter broadcast live from Torrance High School!momenthouse.com/bufferingthevampireslayerLOCATE YOUR HOSTS UPON THE INTERNETJenny Owen Youngs: @jennyowenyoungs; jennyowenyoungs.comKristin Russo: @kristinnoeline; kristinnoeline.comBuffering the Vampire Slayer: @bufferingcast on twitter, facebook, and instagramLearn more about our team at bufferingthevampireslayer.com/our-team Special Guests: LaToya Ferguson, Morgan Lutich, Evan Ross Katz, and Joanna RobinsonScoop up Evan's new book "Into Every Generation A Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts"Produced by: Kristin Russo, Jenny Owen Youngs, and Zoe ReganEdited by: John Mark Nelson & Kristin RussoLogo: Kristine Thune+++SUPPORT US ON PATREON!Advance Music, Bonus Episodes, Live Concerts, Book Clubs, wheeeee!!patreon.com/bufferingcastSCOOP SOME MERCH!Smash the Patriarchy with Buffering T-Shirts, Hoodies, Sweatpants, Pins!bufferingthevampireslayer.com/shop+++We acknowledge that we and our team are occupying unceded and stolen lands and territories. Andrew is cosplaying as Spike and being interrogated by Xander and Anya while Actual Spike is drinking blood out of bags and shattering chairs to bits (at the behest of another More Evil Spike). The scoobies would do well to remember that there are manacles in the basement, and everyone else would do well to remember that they could USE THE DOOR instead of BREAKING THE F*CKING WINDOWS AGAIN.
