Isi and Ajay kick off episode 14 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism by paying tribute to the late, great American auteur David Lynch. They discuss the pleasures of Lynch's oneiric style, his keen eye for American mass culture (and the horrors it conceals), and recent re-watches of Twin Peaks and Dune. The two then reprise episode 13's review of 2024 pop culture. Along the way, they discuss year-end film releases (Brady Corbet's The Brutalist, Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, Gints Zilbalodis' Flow), HBO's The Penguin, and recent gaming highlights (Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess) and lowlights (Indiana Jones and the Great Circle). Closing out the episode are pre-2024 cultural revisits, including Barry Lyndon, the Infernal Affairs trilogy, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, The Case of the Golden Idol, Inside Man, and Koyaanisqatsi. The podcast is produced by Ryan Lentini.

It's the final month of year, which means it's time again to celebrate the reason for the season and make it another DePalmber to ReMalmber as we fire up another Brian De Palma series, DePALMBER: PART DE, with 1987's The Untouchables, directed by De Palma, written by David Mamet, and starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Charles Martin Smith, Robert De Niro, Billy Drago and Patricia Clarkson. A 1930s Chicago gangland drama about the prohibition war on Al Capone, it's a quintessential Dad Movie that found second life as a classic video store rental in the decade-plus after its release, and this week J Mo finally catches up with a movie that was the talk of the schoolyard some 25 years ago now. Plus: No trips to the theater to discuss this week, but we look to streaming for an in-depth report on the Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce fanfic Lifetime Original holiday film, Christmas In The Spotlight. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, The Untouchables is currently streaming on Paramount+ at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Constantine, Sweethearts, When Harry Met Sally..., Kiss The Girls, Our Little Secret, Den of Thieves, Under Paris, Downtown Owl, Anthony Jeselnik: Bones and All, American Gangster, Dear Santa, Smile 2, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Josie and the Pussycats, That Thing You Do!, Blow Out, Mission: Impossible, Air Bud, The Departed, Infernal Affairs, and The Naked Gun 33 & 1/3 among others. DePalmber: Part De continues next week with Brian in full erotic thriller mode as we check out 1984's Body Double, which unfortunately at present is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

It's the cop drama-thriller box office dynamo, INFERNAL AFFAIRS!We're going full spoilers on the movie discussion this week. Summer of Hong Kong continues, and today we're pivoting from the 80's and martial arts into the 90's and emotions! And who else could we be talking about but Wong Kar-wai and his 1994 breakthrough, CHUNGKING EXPRESS!While a touchstone for HK cinema today, Wong Kar-wai's big splash into the arthouse scene was anything but at the time. We're discussing how Wong found his way to his style leading up to CHUNGKING, how it captured the Hong Kong attitudes at such a precise moment, and the different relationship phases we recognized in these characters, in addition to highliighting Tony Leung's sad eyes. We're also connecting CHUNGKING EXPRESS to our previous HK movie, YES MADAM and 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN to chart just how we've arrived here. Plus, we get some some surprise foreshadowing for our next episode and the finale of our Hong Kong series: 2002's INFERNAL AFFAIRS!

Spice up again: DUNE kommt noch einmal ins Kino. And it's a wrap, wieder eine Sendung gut gefüllt. Buona sera. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von Radio Bob!

In 2002, Tony Leung and Andy Lau starred in the Hong Kong classic Infernal Affairs, which Martin Scorsese remade in the US as The Departed; twenty years on, the inspiration flows in the opposite direction, Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street a clear reference point for this fictionalised tale of real-life stock market manipulation, deeply embedded corruption, and the growth of a multi-billion-dollar company from meagre beginnings on the back of scams, confidence, appearences, and lies, with Leung starring as charming, oleaginous company founder and Lau as the anti-corruption official on his tail. We had terrific fun in The Goldfinger. Which isn't to say it's a perfect film. We have our issues. The imagery could be more expressive - though director Felix Chong (another Infernal Affairs alumnus: he wrote the trilogy) clearly has an eye for visual impact, and there's lots to be impressed by. We'd like to know why Lau's corruption investigator believes that chasing Leung's CEO is worth the disruption and danger to his family, beyond simply justice. We'd like any similar insight into what drives Leung, beyond simply greed. And if it is simply justice and greed, we'd like it to be better sold, bigger and brasher. We'd like the clash between the two to be more explosive. And the rather pat ending induces eye-rolling. But never mind all that. The Goldfinger is an entertaining and exciting tale of the rise and fall of a business empire that lived and died based on the fundamental corruption of the system and interests that built and supported it. Recorded on 30th December 2023.

"You downloading me? You listenin' to me?!" That's right, it might sound like a DeNiro themed episode, but we actually turn our attention the legend behind the camera, one Martin Scorsese, as Dave, Mikey, and #XLessDrEarl discuss and rank some of their fave Marty films. First, a quick catch up, then a spoiler free review of the latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon", then the return of the Rotten Tomatoes game, this time with a little Scorsese Potpourri. Then, the guys rank and discuss each of their fave Top 5 Scorsese directed films, with the full knowledge there a ton of them they haven't seen. Nonetheless, it still makes for a great conversation, as they discuss thoughts on "Goodfellas", on "Color of Money" (and Mary Elisabeth Mastrantonio, of course), on "Taxi Driver" and a ton more. Then, once the credits role, Steve signs off, and Casey counts 'em down, a special aftershow, spoiler filled review of "Killers of the Flower Moon"... chatting about the cast, the cinematography, the music, some Easter Eggs, how Lily Gladstone matched up with DeNiro and Leo, and the film's Oscar -- and Deucie -- chances. The films discussed and where to find them at time of recording: Australia! (Hulu) Boxcar Bertha (Amazon Prime; Tubi) Bringing Out the Dead (Amazon Prime; Paramount+; MGM+) Cape Fear (Starz in Menacing) The Color of Money (for rental) The Departed (for rental) Goodfellas (for rental) Infernal Affairs (for rental) Internal Affairs (Amazon Prime) The King of Comedy (Plex) Mean Streets (for rental) Silence (Paramount+) Taxi Driver (for rental) The Wolf of Wall Street (Netflix; Paramount+)
Episode 6: The DepartedRelease Date: 2006In this week's episode, we discuss one of our favorite Martin Scorsese films - the only film that won him his first and to date only Oscar - The 2006 multi-starrer, the mobster crime drama - The Departed. The Departed is a remake of the HK film Infernal Affairs with an all-star cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, and Alec Baldwin; Vera Farmiga plays the love interest of both Damon and DiCaprio's characters. The Departed was a critical and commercial success, receiving acclaim for its direction, performances, screenplay, and editing. It won several accolades, including four Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards: for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. We both watched it in the theatres when it was released and 17 years on when we rewatched it for this podcast, we still rated it high on entertainment but we did find a few loopholes in the script - however, the acting by Leo & Matt still remains the highlight of the movie along with the shocking deaths of the main characters. We did conclude that Scorsese loved Wahlberg or his character Digman over the rest of the cast - tune into the episode to find out why! Synopsis: South Boston cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of gangland chief Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Billy gains the mobster's trust and climbs up the ranks, Frank implants his mole Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) to infiltrate the police department and report its activities to him. When both organizations learn they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin must figure out each other's identities to save their own lives.IMDB Link: The Departed Where to Watch: Prime Video - Rent/BuyBest scenes:Baldwin - Wahlberg Best ScenesCranberry JuiceEveryone hates everybodyYou called me from a dead man's phoneTrivia: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Trivia/TheDepartedMusic from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/hey-pluto/the-paradeLicense code: MIE1N7HAVI6KJOSGContact Us:Email: thetalkingtalkies@gmail.com Twitter: @_talkingtalkiesInstagram @_talkingtalkiesBenny (@RealBennyMan) /...

On a all new episode of the Criterion CULT Film Podcast we go undercover with the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs from directors Andrew Lay and Alan Mak. Then we go deep and philosophical with Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 film Point Break.
The Departed was a pretty good film, although we have an office-wide dispute over whether it's better than Infernal Affairs. Before you settle down to watch the Hong Kong original in its glorious Mandarin dub though, we recommend checking out this podcast to learn the Chinese of the streets. Otherwise the plot won't make much sense. Bonus points if you can spot our mole ahead of time. Episode link: https://www.chinesepod.com/0573

Internal Affairs (2002) (Hong Kong) Infernal Affairs is a 2002 Hong Kong action thriller film co-directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. Jointly written by Mak and Felix Chong, it stars Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong, Eric Tsang, Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen. The film follows an undercover Hong Kong Police Force officer who infiltrates a Triad, and another officer who is secretly a spy for the same Triad. It is the first in the Infernal Affairs series and is followed by Infernal Affairs II and Infernal Affairs III. The film was selected as the Hong Kong entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards but was not nominated. Miramax Films acquired the United States distribution rights and gave it a limited US theatrical release in 2004. The Departed (2006) The Departed is a 2006 American epic crime thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by William Monahan. And not wise guys, because they don't know how to spell. Next week's movie: Jackie Brown (1997) You can join the conversation every Wednesday at 7pm EST on Twitch and Youtube! Odds and Ends: T.J.'s got one last Oscar nominated movie to talk about, and it's the worst one yet; we talk about the prestige zombie drama The Last of Us, that's actually just okay to us because we're cultured film guys who regularly watch prestige dramas, so it's like whatever, really. Feature Film: Speaking of prestige dramas, Love on a Leash! One of the most bizarre movies we've had the pleasure of covering on the show, director Fen Tian's magnum opus is something that really needs to be seen (but not heard, if you're doing scene transitions) to be believed. Meet Alvin Flang, or Prince, or whatever, and just like Lisa, you too will want to fuck your dog. In this episode of Inside the Box, Trevor and David discuss The Infernal Affairs Trilogy.
This week, we watch the quintessential Boston film. The Departed (2006), directed by Martin Scorsese.
2003 was a very abnormal year(那一年是极不平凡的一年)。The SARS pandemic(非典) and war in Iraq(伊拉克战争) broke out(爆发)。 2003年,SARS was raging(“非典”肆虐),很多城市的空气中was filled with the smell of white vinegar and isatis root(充斥着白醋和板蓝根的味道)。People were panic buying. The price of isatis root for a few yuan increased tenfold.(几块钱一包的板蓝根涨价十倍。)• raging /ˈreɪdʒɪŋ/ adj. 猛烈的• tenfold adv.& adj. 十倍地(的)钟南山是抗击“非典”(SARS)的一面banner (旗帜),当时已年过花甲的他,took the lead in fighting the epidemic(带头奋战在抗疫一线)。 (“Hospitals are battlefields. As soldiers, who do we not rush to?”) • take the lead in doing 带头……• deja vu /ˌdeɪʒɑ:ˈvu:/ 似曾经历过的感觉春节后,病毒扩散,到了4月,Beijing became the hardest hit area(北京成为疫情重灾区)。 “小汤山奇迹”之后,the "SARS" epidemic entered an declining point(“非典”疫情进入拐点 )。• declining /dɪˈklaɪnɪŋ/ adj. 中国经济飞速发展2003年,中国加入WTO(World Trade Organization)刚两年,距离北京奥运会举办还有五年。这一年,"globalization" was still a fashionable hot topic(“全球化”仍是一个时髦的热门话题)。 ( "We look forward to 2003 and to the next 20 years.”)———那是一个充满希望的时代。• moderately /ˈmɑ:dərətli/ adv. 适度地• prosperous /ˈprɑ:spərəs/ adj. 繁荣的英国《金融时报》撰写《世界应心平气和地对待醒来的中国》一文,并引用拿破仑的名句:“中国是一只沉睡的雄狮,一旦它醒来,整个世界都会为之颤抖。”(“China is a sleeping lion. Let her sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world.”)中国经济的增长,来自于:• Foreign trade power formed by "Made in China" (“中国制造”形成的外贸力量)• 以房地产(real estate)为代表的内需市场2003年,“温州炒房团”在全国购置房产,北京、上海、深圳、杭州等,房价约在5,500 yuan per square meter(5500元/平方米)以上。• estate /ɪˈsteɪt/ n. 庄园,地产3. 互联网2003年, e-commerce was in its infancy(电商处于萌芽状态),非典的危机却令电商达到一个a new peak(新高峰)。其中,阿里巴巴在电子商务领域一骑绝尘。网易(NetEase)股价攀升,32岁的丁磊,成为福布斯富豪榜上(on the Forbes Rich List),首位互联网出身的中国大陆首富。• infancy /ˈɪnfənsi/ n.婴儿期;初期这一年,网易推出了一款名为《梦幻西游》(Fantasy Westward Journey)的游戏。这一年,QQregistered users(注册用户)数exceeded(突破)2亿,成为年轻人的社交“新宠”。• exceed /ɪkˈsi:d/ v. 超过,超出4. 影视A. 有人说,2003年,是Hong Kong's entertainment industry(香港演艺圈)最黑暗的一年。“非典”让影院空空如也, film production in Hong Kong was put on hold(香港的电影制作也被迫停顿)四个月。而且,演员张国荣和梅艳芳先后passed away(离世)。2003年4月1日,张国荣从24楼纵身一跳,从此,人间再无张国荣。2003年12月30日,梅艳芳去世。2003年,香港电影《无间道》(Infernal Affairs)系列came to an end(迎来完结)。• put on hold 搁置;延期;暂停• pass away 对“去世”的委婉说法• come to an end v. 结束,终止B. 那一年,看春晚(Spring Festival Gala)仍是过年重要的消遣(an important pastime),经典的春晚节目层出不穷。2003年小品中,喜剧演员(comedian)赵本山作为心理医生,为中了大奖的范伟治疗心理疾病。• pastime n. 消遣,娱乐C. 那一年,very good TV dramas emerged one after another(好的电视剧层出不穷)。央视推出《大染坊》;《金粉世家》里,董洁、刘亦菲惊艳了一代人;《还珠格格3》为这个创造收视神话的系列画下句号;《粉红女郎》至今仍是中国都市剧的标杆;张纪中版的《射雕英雄传》《天龙八部》以及苏有朋版《倚天屠龙记》相继热播。5. 流行音乐2003 was also an eventful year for pop music,流行音乐界也有很多大事。周杰伦在这一年出了专辑,再次斩获多个大奖。林俊杰发行第一张专辑,正式出道。蔡依林带着《看我72变》,冲进了大众视野。Jay Chou, JJ Lin and Jolin Tsai really made the front pages that year!周杰伦、林俊杰和蔡依林真的登上了当年的头版!这一年,金曲奖(Golden Melody Awards)上,Eason Chan was crowned (陈奕迅封王)。• make the front pages 成为头版• crown v. 为…加冕2003年,出了很多歌曲,成为之后几年KTV必唱歌曲。比如:刘德华的《17岁》陈奕迅的《十年》孙燕姿的《遇见》容祖儿的《挥着翅膀的女孩》朴树的《那些花儿》刘若英的《原来你也在这里》……俄国诗人普希金说:"The past will become a kind memory."(“过去了的,会变成亲切的怀念。”) In a blink of an eye(转眼间),2003年,已经是20年前了。希望20年后,我们再一起回忆2023年。请留言告诉我们:2003年,你在做什么?灵感来源于公众号:最爱历史。

With The Aviator, Martin Scorsese proved that he was in on Leonardo DiCaprio for the long haul. And for DiCaprio, the film -much to Garrett's chagrin- gave him the credibility he had been looking for since being the apple of every teenage girl's eye in Titanic. So what would they do for a follow up? How about going back to Scorsese's gangster roots? With a William Monihan script that generated a fair amount of buzz, and source material in Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs that was near the top of many critic's top of the year list, it would seem Scorsese had a lot to work with. You enter a cast that included Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Vera Fermiga, and Alec Baldwin among others, and you have all the makings of another notch on the belt of the two focuses of this series. But even with The Departed finally getting Scorsese what some say is a long deserved Best Picture win, does it live up to what the boys were expecting? And will Matt be allowed to speak about a movie he's been looking forward to talking about since this retrospective started, instead of sitting back and letting Mike and Garrett argue? Listen below to find out!

After all, if you can perfectly preserve a 14th-Century Persian carpet in a climate-controlled glass vitrine, shouldn't you be able to look after your staff, too? Tune in to find out.
