Today, we get serious about ScEmma. After years of teasing it, we're finally tackling the complicated romance between the X-Men's Scott Summers and Emma Frost. It's a relationship born out of pain and surprise. Maybe it was not meant to last, but we can't ignore the lessons found within their passion. We begin our counseling session at the end of Grant Morrison's iconic New X-Men run, discussing the Assault on Weapon Plus, Planet X, and Here Comes Tomorrow storylines (issues 142 - 154). The psychic affair is known, out in the open for every X-Man and reader to judge. Scott and Emma are thrown apart, and their reunion must wait until Magneto's done with Manhattan. Once face-to-face, the riddle of their relationship could be the answer behind an apocalyptic future. What's Jean got to say about it all? Helping us navigate possible romantic catastrophes is Dr. Nicole Lepera and her book, How to Be the Love You Seek: Break Cycles, Find Peace and Heal Your Relationships. What hope does ScEmma have if Scott and Emma are alienated from their authentic selves? Can any relationship survive when one or both parties feel broken? New X-Men issues 142 - 154 were published by Marvel Comics between June 2002 and May 2003. They were written by Grant Morrison and penciled by Chris Bachalo, Phil Jimenez, and Marc Silvestri. They're inked by Tim Townsend, Al Vey, Aaron Sowd, Andy Lanning, Simon Coleby, BATT, Joe Weems, Billy Tan, and Eric Basaldua. The colorists were Chris Chuckry, Steve Firchow, John Starr, Matt Milla, Beth Sotelo, and Brian Buccellato. The letterers were Chris Eliopoulos and Rus Wooton. Five years ago, we launched this podcast with Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Back then, our conversation concluded with a tumultuous debate surrounding Grant Morrison's New X-Men and the complicated three-way that seemingly shattered an iconic Marvel Comics romance. With so much life lived since those early podcasting days, we return to New X-Men issues 127 through 141, this time examining them through the lens of Scott Summers and Emma Frost. Are they the one true pairing? Is the question even fair? Once again, we use The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman as our relationship guide, exploring Scott and Emma's Love Tank levels and considering how each could benefit from recognizing the other's Love Language. By shifting our relationship focus and surviving five strange years on this planet, our response to Morrison's New X-Men is totally different from how we previously reacted. Our hearts are open in new ways, but are we ready to declare ourselves #TeamScemma? We celebrate and reflect on five years of Comic Book Couples Counseling. Thanks to all of you reading this post and listening to our episodes, we've managed to grow our show and ourselves tremendously. We owe you. We love you. Also, we're joined this week by several artists and listeners who steadied themselves and braved our CBCC Hotline. Well, the plague has come to the Superhuman Registration Podcast, and none are spared. So we're skipping our usual episode format this week, and instead Stephen is taking a closer look at the career of letterer extraordinaire Chris Eliopoulos!
This week, we are joined by TWO very special guests: Kelly Thompson (Black Widow / Captain Marvel / Amazing Spider-Man) returns along with Ed Brisson (Predator / Batman Incorporated / Beyond the Breach) as we look back on their collaboration with Matt on Uncanny X-Men!IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books! Our theme song is “Where's the Poison” by Summer PeopleEnjoy!Hey again. So this episode is a little different. This is actually something Kelly, Ed, and I talked about doing a while ago but never got around to. We all talk regularly and are pretty close friends (despite Ed's obvious disdain for me on the podcast), so getting together to discuss our 10 issue run of Uncanny X-Men made a lot of sense to us. It seemed like a fun way to relive a crazy moment in all of our careers, give fans a behind the scenes glimpse at the book, and maybe even learn some stuff about ourselves. It was Kelly who really pushed for this to actually happen though, but she doesn't have a podcast and I do, so I win.Meanwhile I'm trying to not feel weird about the fact that my internet dropped out and I disappear from the show for 4 minutes and not only does no one notice, but the show actually runs much better. But the joke is on them because while I was waiting for my modem to reboot I made myself an egg cream and they just had to keep talking to each other about Infinity Stones or something. To read the complete series you can pick up UNCANNY X-MEN: DISASSEMBLED in paperback or fancy hardcover wherever comics are sold. And if you want to see what the book is all about, you can read the first issue for free here. I'm not sure Marvel knows that that is up there, so maybe keep this between us. Maybe they do? I don't know. I guess a few Marvel folks read this newsletter. Everyone be cool. You should check out Ed's excellent newsletter here to stay up to date on all the cool stuff he has going on.I shouldn't have to tell you where to find Kelly's newsletter since she's basically the cohost of this show at this point, but just in case you missed it you can click here.A big thanks to all our collaborators on UNCANNY X-MEN for making it beautiful and fun- Mahmud Asrar, R.B. Silva, Adriano Di Benedetto, Yildiray Cinar, Pere Pérez, Rachelle Rosenberg, Mirko Colak, Ibraim Roberson, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessey, Guru-eFX, Joe Caramagna, Chris Eliopoulos, Leinil Francis Yu, Edgar Delgado, Elizabeth Torque, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Roberto Poggi, Matt Milla, and Jason Keith. And lastly, a huge loving thanks to our editors for putting up with us, making sure the book came out, and making sure it was good- Chris Robinson, Darren Shan, and Jordan D. White. As always you can listen to older episodes of IDEAS DON'T BLEED here or wherever you get your podcasts. And if you aren't subscribed to this newsletter you can do so below. Get digital comics, discounts on cool stuff, new podcasts sent to you every week, and even get comics not available anywhere else.Tune in next week for part two to see if Ed makes me cry.Stay safe. Take care of each other. Try to notice when people disappear.-Matthew RosenbergNYC 10/17/22 This is a public episode. It's the simple story of a letterer-turned-cartoonist, who conquered the world of children's entertainment with the ongoing Ordinary People Change the World book series and the associated Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum cartoon on PBS. But how did Chris Eliopoulos climb this mountain, you ask? Well, listen to the episode. But if you want the Cliff's Notes version: he started out as a highly successful and prolific letterer and font designer, who among other things, hand-lettered the first 100 issues of Savage Dragon (past guest Erik Larsen is a friend). Chris was bit by the cartooning bug on that same title, where he introduced Desperate Times as a backup feature. After a bigger stint on Marvel's Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius (and the Misery Loves Sherman webcomic), he hooked up with writer Brad Meltzer for the aforementioned kids' book series, which takes a heroic look at historical and contemporary real-life figures. And then, just for fun, the pair created the Xavier Riddle show, where the main character interacts with the figures from the books. The newest books in the series, which takes a turn into the fictional, are I am Superman and I am Batman, which drop on September 27. Go get 'em!You can follow Chris on all the socials @chriseliopoulos._______________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. It's Hawkeye time! Again! Specifically the second half of 2012's classic by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos (with Annie Wu and Francesco Francavilla rounding out the regular artists.) Jaina and Elias are digging into the tumultuous last 12 issues (that's #12-22 and an annual, for those keeping score at home,) the contemporaneous history of the issues, and fighting to figure out what order to talk about the dang issues in. Seriously! It's nearly as complicated as some of the "War of Kings" stuff.Next book club, we're reading the blessedly short "Taskmaster: Unthinkable" from 2010. It's four issues and collected in a single trade. Easy! Find it through your local library or back-issue bin. Next episode however, things take a turn for the fantastic. Excelsior!

Chris Eliopoulos may have has simple beginnings, just a young boy who liked doodling at pizza parlors. From there, he has gone on to having a small empire. Chris got his break in comics to be a letterer, working on thousands of books over the years. During this time, he mad friend and had some incredible opportunities, including one to set up his own digital lettering shop. Virtual Calligraphy (VC) now completes the majority of the Marvel digital lettering. His love of drawing never diminished, and he was able to contribute to a few books before he got the opportunity to develop a series dear to our hearts, Franklin Richarrds, Son of a Genius. A truly fun and entertaining series that utilizes his great whimsy and talent to create a unique take on the child of our second favorite team of four. But that is not all. Chris is also the co-writer and artist of the very successful I Am series of books. These children's books look at the fascinating lives of histories most important figures. Presenting them in an easy to digest format. And then, just to cap it all off he also has his own TV show. Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, which is about Xavier, his sister and their friends at the Secret Museum. They time travel to the past to interact and learn from historical heroes. This just goes to show you that your dreams can come true, even if you only want to draw on napkins in a pizza parlor. Thanks to iFanboy Patrons, it's Talksplode time. Already a successful author, Brad Meltzer made a big splash in comics after taking over Green Arrow from Kevin Smith, and following that up with the Identity Crisis mini-series, with Rags Morales, a story that is still talked about today. Then he won an Eisner Award for his work on Justice League, along with Gene Ha. Then he became a TV host, in addition to still churning out his best selling books. In recent years, along with collaborator, cartoonist Chris Eliopoulos, Meltzer has released 19 historical children's books in the Ordinary People Change the World series, the two most recent being I Am Walt Disney and I Am Marie Curie, both out now. ABOUT THE BOOK I am Harriet Tubman by Brad Meltzer, Christopher Eliopoulos Harriet Tubman's heroic and pivotal role in the fight against slavery is the subject of the fourteenth picture book in this New York Times bestselling biography series This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great—the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America's icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This volume focuses on Harriet Tubman's brave heroism as part of the movement to abolish slavery. As one of the key players in the Underground Railroad, she helped enslaved African Americans escape and find freedom. Four years ago, #1 New York Times bestselling author and History Channel host Brad Meltzer was frustrated that his three children were looking up to princesses and reality stars. Nazi soldiers take Jones into custody and tie him and Marion up in Malta for some reason. Then some other Nazis lift the lid off the Ark to reveal . . . our guest Chris Eliopoulos!
For once Belloq makes a speech that works to his advantage, to the point where our guest Chris Eliopoulos thinks René is the hero of the movie.
Blow up the Ark? Blow up the girl? Blow up the Ark but not the girl? Blow up most of the Nazis but not guest Chris Eliopoulos? We should have thought this out more.
The Ark is carried through a desert canyon. That's it. But somehow our guest Chris Eliopoulos was still interested enough to stay.
We were all excited to peek inside the Ark before the ritual Belloq talks Dietrich into, but then Chris Eliopoulos showed up and distracted us.
Jesse Blaze Snider is our guest to talk about his latest book BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT. Jesse Blaze Snider and co-writer/producer Will Knox’s groundbreaking online comic book/music anthology will appear in print for the very first time this October from Image Comics. BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT features six epic illustrated stories set to the music of geek culture-inspired “Black Light District” EP, with art contributions from these stellar talents: Chris Burnham (NAMELESS, OFFICER DOWNE), Phil Hester (MYTHIC, Green Arrow), Jason Pearson (BODY BAGS, Legion of Superheroes), Andrea Tamme (Adventure Time), David Witt (The Growler Magazine), J.K. Woodward (Fallen Angel, Star Trek), Michael Spicer (MYTHIC, Sons of Anarchy), Erik Larsen (SAVAGE DRAGON), and Chris Eliopoulos (SAVAGE DRAGON, Pet Avengers). “This [project] is a love letter to comics, said Snider. “These are the most personal songs I’ve ever written—while they’re superhero metaphors, I think they’ll be personal to everybody, because they’re based in emotions I think everyone has felt.” In BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT, comics and music come together to tell six separate stories with one thing in common: everything is at stake. "Jesse gave us a melody and lyrics for inspiration, then just let us do what we do,” said Woodward. “It was not only one of my favorite creative experiences, but, in my opinion, my best sequential work produced to date.” Hester added: "Working on Madhattan with Jesse, Erik [Larsen], and Chris [Eliopoulos] was a joy.” "I can't think of a time I've worked harder or been more filled with the spirit of inspiration than working on this cover,” said Burnham. “I can comfortably look at this piece and know in my heart that PummelHorse was me at my all-time peak.” BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT: SIX ISSUES (ONE SHOT) hits comic book stores Wednesday, October 12th.
