If you raise animals on the island of Kodiak (Alaska), it comes as no surprise to see a hog, cow, or horse get brought in by plane or ferry. Kelli Foreman, Assistant Executive Director at Kodiak Baptist Mission, took everything she learned from her upbringing in Nebraska to be a goat farmer while raising a family in this unique part of the country. With three boys and a whole slew of farm animals to raise, it's no wonder her days start when the rest of us are still in bed.

I talked to Katrina Benton this week. She is a Realtor friend out in Kodiak Alaska. We spoke about the market there and what life is like on the island. Pros and cons of living there? Erin Marie Gilbert As I've mentioned in other episodes, each year, an average of 2,250 people disappear in Alaska, twice the national average.  According to the Alaska State Troopers, approximately 1,520 people currently are listed as missing in Alaska. The cases date back to the 1950s. Some of these people vanished on purpose, and others suffered unfortunate accidents. We know a few met with foul play, though. They were alive, well, and happy one moment, and then they suddenly disappeared without a trace. The two stories I'm covering in this episode describe every parent's worst nightmare, and in both cases, I can't help but wonder why more wasn't done at the time to search for these young women. Since both cases technically remain open, though, the public cannot access Jonnie Renee White the police files, and perhaps authorities have done a great deal over the years to search for Erin and Jonnie. Kodiak Alaska is best known for its Big Game Hunting and in particular Trophy Brown Bear hunting. Bears over 10 feet tall are common with a few getting much bigger than that. These bears weigh as much as 1500 pounds and have no natural predators. "When I moved to Alaska and started my garden there was no dirt.  Well I can't have dirt delivered so I had to make my own.  The traditional way of composting would take too many years.  I researched it.  Hot composting was how I made dirt." "I add the green stuff and brown stuff and in a few days it heats up.  I turned it and it would cool down, then heat up again.  In a few weeks, not years, I had dirt!" "Sharing what I do is important.  I've written for Alaska Magazine and I've also submitted photographs.  I've been a keynote speaker at garden conferences and if I can garden in Kodiak then you can do it wherever you are in the world."
