The first 45 minutes of this conversation are FREE! Listen to the extended version of this episode when you subscribe to Patreon here. Dr. Mara Gordon joins the pod to share what it means to be a size-inclusive physician and why it's time to rethink weight in medicine. We discuss why it's harmful to center medical care on a patient's weight, the stigma and negative health consequences of medical providers prescribing intentional weight loss, how to advocate for yourself with your physician, declining to be weighed at the doctor's, why BMI is so problematic, caring for and treating diagnoses without weight loss, and her thoughts on the GLP-1 hype. Mara also opens up about what she regrets as a physician prior to finding fat-positive medicine, and how she came to see the harms of anti-fat bias and diet culture more broadly.  In the EXTENDED version (a bonus episode that you can find at www.patreon.com/fullplate), Mara answers questions about: her concerns about GLP-1s like Ozempic, and what we can do to think about them differently how larger bodied humans can advocate for themselves at the doctor's office without giving the unwritten message that they're “noncompliant” or don't care about their health how to deal with being told weight loss will help a specific health condition (like diabetes, joint pain, sleep apnea) why folks in larger bodies need to receive the same treatments offered to thin-bodied folks how “obesity” as a pathological condition has its roots in the pharmaceutical industry, and it started in the 90s   More about Dr. Mara Gordon: Dr. Gordon is a family physician and writer based in Philadelphia. She worked in public health in Tanzania and Malawi before returning to the Philadelphia area to attend medical school at the Perelman School of Medicine at the  University of Pennsylvania, where she was awarded the Zervanos Family Medicine Award for a medical student going into family medicine. The center services 6,000 families annually, with programming from food pantries, holiday assistance to addiction services, job and ESL support.  Major Sanchez described their membership, 60% Camden residents, from pre-school to the elderly, with programming for all.  Membership for all of the facilities is just $17 per month, with scholarships available.  It takes donations, volunteers and members, Major Sanchez invites all to learn more at CamdenKrocCenter.org.

Latinos are disproportionately affected by extreme heat due to climate change. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than 40% of Latinos are more likely to live in places that are too hot to work outside for a full day. Cooling centers are proven to help lower the risk of heat-related illnesses and deaths. As the heat index soared into the hundreds this past weekend, the Siena Francis House in downtown Omaha opened its cooling center for the first time in 2024. The Salvation Army Kroc Centers are a network of state-of-the-art community centers located throughout the US. Most Kroc centers feature everything from swimming pools and weight training, to after school youth programs and even a worship center. Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, said that she took a tour of San Diego and it was then that she recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place, a place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children's social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. She described The Kroc Center as being a beacon of light and hope in the community. Mrs. Kroc entrusted The Salvation Army with $90 million to build the first Kroc Center in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. In our last episode, you heard from each of the seven Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers across the western U.S., from San Diego to Salem, Oregon, to Kapolei, Hawaii. It was 20 years ago that the first Kroc Center opened in San Diego, California. The 12-acre, 132,000 square-foot facility was a realization of Joan Kroc's dream for all people to have recreational, educational and cultural arts opportunities.   And just under a year before it opened, Tim and Cindy Foley were appointed its administrators, just as the foundation was being poured. Today, Lt. Colonel Cindy Foley is Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in the Northwest Division and Lt. Colonel Tim Foley is the Divisional Leader for Officer Development. Back then, they were given the job to create the program and business structure—really, the template for what the Kroc Centers would become across the nation. The Foleys are on the show today to give us a window into that year. Twenty years ago, the first Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center opened in San Diego, California. It was a realization of Joan Kroc's dream for all people to have recreational, educational and cultural arts opportunities.  During her final visit to the center before her death, Joan Kroc, the widow of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, said “The reality of what the Kroc Center has become to San Diego is beyond my imagination.”  In October 2003, she left a $1.5 billion bequest to The Salvation Army to build similar community centers around the country. The result is twenty-six Kroc Centers—a network of state-of-the-art community centers that provide children and families with opportunities to both discover and develop their passions and talents within their own neighborhood, just as Joan Kroc dreamed. To help us celebrate this 20th anniversary of the first Kroc Center in San Diego, I'm joined in this episode by a local representative of each of the seven Kroc Centers in the western U.S. They will introduce themselves and share an inside look at the unique offerings at their Kroc Center.  So, allow me to introduce to you today the Kroc Centers in San Diego; San Francisco; Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Salem, Oregon; Phoenix; Kapolei, Hawaii; and Suisun City, California.  EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. Welcome today's Beacon, Tony Frazier.  Talk about a true inspiration! Tony currently serves as the director of the Kroc Center in Salem, Oregon, USA.  He describes the mission of the Kroc Centers as providing fun, healthy and educational settings for lower income families.  Tony also runs the White Boards Consulting company. This wasn't his first venture into helping others and his passion is to help at-risk youth.  He has accomplished this is many ways including teaching construction trade skills with Habitat for Humanity, proctoring them at home with his wife and leading a workforce project.  To him, its personal, and he tells us about it in his story. Through it all, his vision to help and inspire others through challenging the status quo has remained clear.  Even when it meant taking pay cuts, beating the streets and knocking on doors to get funding for the projects.   Some inspirational quotes from Tony in this episode: "When you know who you are, what you're driven by and how you want to do life, people come around the campfire." "Once you understand what's driving you, you've got to go do it or life doesn't feel right." "Search your soul and decide who you want to be." "When you feel stuck, realize everything is a choice and what do you want to choose?" "If you really want something in life, help someone else get it." "There's no greater joy in life than living out who you are and giving yourself to the world in that space." "Don't aspire to be a leader but aspire to be a person who can lead." Please show Tony some love if you were inspired by him today!  You can contact him via email at:  Tonyfrazier2017@gmail.com or whiteboardcp@gmail.com (his consulting company). Don't keep Tony's vision and mission to help others to yourself.  Share this episode with a friend or on social media.  Tag me on social when you do so that I can give you a shout out. On IG @Cari.Normand  on FB @ Cari Yocom Normand or on LinkedIn @ Cari Normand. A message like Tony's deserves to be spread so that like-minded individuals can come together and change the world!
