In this solo episode we dive into an insidious fear, one that most of us don't think we have, yet it rears it's head when we least expect it.  The Fear of Success. While we can all relate to the fear of failure, public embarrassment, etc.  We don't realize that our dreams and goals may be extinguished by the fear of success. We delve into the phenomena of "Tall Poppie Syndrome" and the "Crabs in a Bucket" mentality. Also referenced (and highly recommended) is the book "Change Your Story, Change Your Life" by Kendra Hall.  This book relates to all obstacles that may keep us from achieving our goals, not just the fear of success. The book "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" by Susan Jeffers, PhD is also referenced.  This book will be revisited frequently in the episodes relating to fears of all kinds. Welcome back to the Beacon's of Bravery podcast, where we rejoin the "What keeps us stuck? series."  Today I have a special guest, Colleen Frazier.  One of my very best childhood friends.  We lost touch after our high school senior trip, but reconnected 5 years ago.  We decided this past Christmas that we needed to go on a trip to celebrate turning 50 this year. So we did just that and this episode gives a run down of our adventure in the UK and Ireland.  Yes, you could say it was "just a trip."  But we learned so much about ourselves and others during this time.  Its a broader perspective that can help us get "unstuck" in our lives.  I needed it, and if you're feeling stuck, I hope you will listen in to be inspired to do something you want to do, especially if it involves leaving your comfort zone. Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2022 17:59

We're starting our themed series "What Keeps Us Stuck" with the first culprit--Perfectionism. Perfectionism is what (we think) makes us appear good on the outside, while it keeps us small and unfulfilled in our lives, especially if we want to achieve new things and big goals.  It's what also keeps us from being relatable. Even if you don't self-identify as a perfectionist, you should listen in to see how we all have a shade of perfectionism and also to help you understand the perfectionist you love. We explore Brene Brown's explanation of perfectionism in her book "Daring Greatly" where she explains that this is one of the armors we pick up in our early years to protect us from feelings of shame and judgement.   We also share quotes from Cathy Heller's book "Don't Keep Your Day Job", a quote from author Daniel Pink, some information from Carol Dweck's YouTube video on perfectionism, a quote from the famous inspirational speaker Les Brown and some helpful information from Sam Laura Brown's podcast "The Perfectionism Podcast." I highly recommend you check out any and all of these people's work if you identify that perfectionism may be holding you back from fulfilling your dreams.  Credit goes all to them, I've just curated their information and given examples from my own life. If you enjoy this episode, or if you would like to be a future guest,  please let me know by tagging or DM'ing me on social media @ Cari.Normand or Beacons of Bravery on IG, Cari Yocom Normand on FB or email me at Beaconsofbravery@gmail.com.  Let me know how perfectionism has affected your life.   And a huge thank you for listening, sharing and reviewing the Beacons of Bravery podcast.  You are why I'm here and I love to hear your feedback!

Shannon Wallis is our featured guest today.  You won't want to miss her story because each of you will relate in some way. Shannon is currently quite successful as an author of the outstanding book "WE the Change:  Launching Big Ideas and Creating New Realities."  She is also a consultant and coach to high level leaders. But this hasn't always been her story.  She describes her humble beginnings in a dysfunctional family living below the poverty line--that's why she believes change is truly possible. In her book, and this episode, Shannon describes her pilgrimage on El Camino de Santiago, a 500 mile track across northern Spain.  It's used as a metaphor for our life journey. Some of my favorite quotes from her book: "Dragons are found guarding the treasure, the bigger the dragon, the bigger the treasure...facing and fighting the dragons is required to complete the journey."  And as Shannon describes in this episode, this dragon is often our inner critic who whispers in our ear that we are not worthy of the treasure. As Shannon describes the most trying day in the pilgrimage, she relates a story of how we are never alone.  We need to find the help and supporters that will keep us on track. And then there's her husband Joe's famous advice that reverberates throughout the journey: "It wouldn't be a pilgrimage if it weren't challenging."  Meaning anything worth getting in life comes with a bit of a price and requires effort. Here are a list of her recommended books: "Your Lion Inside: Discover the Power Within and Live Your Fullest Life" by Kimberly Faith "Path of Least Resistance: Learning to Become the Creative Force in Your Own Life" by Robert Fritz Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership" by Joseph Jaworski   You can reach out to Shannon directly at:  shannon@cascadeleadership.solutions or another staff member at: carmen@cascadeleadership.solutions or on the Shannon Wallis Solutions Facebook Page. Some of the topics we cover in this episode are: -how a person (and especially a woman) can be confident and not have to apologize for it -how its your reaction to your circumstances, not the circumstances themselves, that can change your perspective on life--even in the midst of family addiction, miscarriage, bankruptcy and illness. -how God is always pursuing you, even when you're not pursuing Him -how we are all perfectly imperfect -how to keep what is good in your life, honor what was hard and commit to changing what you can -how being passionate about what you do can give you confidence -how we can't do it alone.  Let your friends help you. She drops a golden social media nugget:  before you post, pause, because the moment is fleeting but what you put out there is forever. Her book recommendations include:  "The Shack" by William P. Young.  "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" by John Mark Comer and "Greenlights" by Matthew McConaughey Some of her favorite quotes are:  "Smile where you are...God is."  and "Don't let your blessings become your burdens." Welcome today's Beacon Abigail Roberts.  She's a breath of fresh air!  Among her many achievements as a 19 year old college student, here are a few: She started a non-profit called "What's Your Dash?" as a 13 year old.  (You'll hear more about this during the show). She's a Division 2 athlete and scholar.  She's an actress and most of all, a compassionate young woman who has a heart for others and for God. If you're jaded about the future, or the younger generation, take heart and listen to this amazing guest!  She holds herself to a high standard and has dealt with perfectionism and people-pleasing, but she's learning how to give herself grace.  She says that it's only when we have an abundance of grace for ourselves that we can truly give it to others. We discuss many things that you will relate to, no matter your age. One of her favorite quotes is by Erma Bombeck that goes like this:  "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left.  You could say I used everything you gave me." She mentions a favorite book/devotional called "New Morning Mercies." by Paul David Tripp  and also "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" by John Mark Comer. Give Abi some love if you connect with her message.  Screenshot the show title and share it on social media or DM her on IG @Abigail.Roberts19.  You can also find out more about "What's Your Dash?" on the FB page of the same name. Meet today's Beacon, Alysha Myronuk.  Wow, does she have a life story to tell!  From body dysmorphia in childhood, to losing her parents at an early age, to marriage and divorce at an early age, suicidal thoughts/attempts and alcohol and prescription drug abuse, to name a few. She was even present during a mall shooting!  But that's not the end of her story, in fact she is grateful for all of it. Alysha has turned her seeming tragedies around, and has coined the term "Myrony." (my + irony) which are those crazy things in life that lead us to the right place. Things we discuss in this episode: -we all start out free and uninhibited, but then start to compare and shrink ourselves, this is when our body shaming begins -if you don't go through things, you aren't able to help others.  We go through everything for a reason -when you're suicidal, it may be one person or one thought that can give you strength and pull you through -being grateful even in the midst of chaos and drama One of my favorite quotes from her during this podcast was:  "It was the ugly that I had to go through so that I could see the beauty in what I was ultimately being prepared for." And another:  "sometimes when things aren't moving the way we want them to move, its because we still have something to learn." Here are some of the highlights: -how to pivot your career, and the blessings of a pandemic -how to stop believing everything your environment is telling you--for example, that you need to be quiet and meek in order to get along -that "comparison is the thief of joy" -how to break out of the walls that you surround yourself with -how to "just start" even if you don't know exactly what you're doing yet -her advice to stop multitasking because it makes you lose your focus and you can't give people your undivided attention.  You will be unique by putting your phone down and giving someone your undivided attention. Laarni is an author of the newly released book:  "Standing in Strength: Inspirational Stories of Power Unleashed." We discuss introversion and extroversion, resilience, getting unstuck and that fear is a normal reaction to stepping outside your comfort zone.
