Standing ovations from the U.S. Congress have only emboldened Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose new killing spree threatens a regional, if not an even larger war. Tens of thousands of mourners packed the streets of Tehran for the funeral of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated early Wednesday, July 31st in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh was visiting for the inauguration of the country's newly elected president. In the last years of his life, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. rejected duopoly politics and challenged the roots of the crises we face, what he called the triple evils of racism, capitalism and militarism. As many people active in the Civil Rights Movement moved into the Democratic Party, Dr. King taught that the movement must be independent of political parties and be "the conscience" of them. For this, Dr. King was shunned and hated. In this interview from MLK Day in 2015, Kevin Zeese and I spoke with Kymone Freeman, co-founder of We Act Radio in Washington,DC, JasiriX, an activist and artist out of Pittsburgh, PA, and Cat Brooks, an activist in Oakland, CA about the revival of the radical Dr. King and how they are continuing his work in their communities. ON THE GROUND FOR FEBRUARY 14, 2020 If you think that this year's Iowa Caucus is proof that the U.S. is quickly becoming a banana republic, wait until you hear about the proceedings inside the federal court where the Venezuela Embassy Protectors are on trial. And then to the movies: What other flicks from 2019, in addition to the Oscar-winning 'Parasite,' offered sharp critiques of the neoliberal order? I speak with writer and activist Kymone Freeman. Gerald Horne on White supremacists in the U.S. military - and much more. UPDATE: There was a MISTRIAL in the case of the VENEZUELA EMBASSY PROTECTORS, meaning that the jurors did not decide to convict or acquit. The protectors are counting this as a VICTORY but need to ascertain whether the Trump administration will attempt to retry them. On their website, DefendEmbassyProtectors.com, the defendants state that "While a mistrial is better than finding the four guilty, they are not through with the process. The judge ordered the four to return to court on Friday, February 28 at 9:30 am so the government can decide whether to drop the charges or try the case again. The four defenders with the support of their legal team and this defense committee are making preparations for a likely second prosecution." In most D.C. neighborhoods, there’s a person you have to go see to get anything done, and to get in to see them, you usually need an introduction. In Anacostia that person is Teresa Howe-Jones. The 83-year-old troubleshoots overdue bills, tenant issues and other problems. She has a 2,000-person phone list, and she knows how to use it. Anacostia Unmapped contributor Kymone Freeman invites her to his station, We Act Radio. Plus we hear poet Fred Joiner perform "Song for Anacostia."
Anacostia. The Southeast D.C. neighborhood was originally known as "the remainder of the District." And in many ways, that’s how it’s been treated and thought of for years. This spring, WAMU 88.5 presents Anacostia Unmapped, a project that invites people who live and work in the community to take us inside. First up, we introduce one of the project's producers, Kymone Freeman, whose day job is running We Act Radio. He's been thinking about where Anacostia fits on a city map. Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
The recent massacre of nine people in a black church in Charleston, South Carolina by a white supremacist highlights the racist culture that is particularly prevalent in the South and has amplified the call for removal of symbols such as the Confederate flag. The attack demonstrates that institutionalized racism is not isolated to the police and judicial system, it is pervasive in the educational system, government and in our neighborhoods. And it is not limited to the United States but extends around the world, particularly where the US Empire and other colonists have interfered. Kymone Freeman, an activist and artist, and Reverend Graylan Hagler of the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Washington, DC join us to discuss the state of racism in the US and around the world today. For more information, visit www.ClearingtheFOGRadio.org.
JUNE 25, 2015 African Americans and the entire nation join in a collective wake after the assassination of nine African American church members by a White supremacist in Charleston. Clearing the FOG with co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese
The month of October has been dedicated to the issues of mass incarceration, racially-biased policing, militarized policing and the abusive behavior and extrajudicial murders being carried out by police. Over the weekend of October 10, thousands of people converged in St. Louis, MO to demonstrate for justice in the murders of Michael Brown and other Black men killed by police. On October 22, thousands of people marched and protested in 80 cities from coast to coast. There is tremendous momentum right now to change policing in the United States. On this program, our guests talk about what is happening in Ferguson, MO and other areas of the country and about next steps in this struggle. Especially we discuss what response would be constructive in the high likelihood that the officer who shot Michael Brown is not indicted by the Grand Jury.
