Trump's return is not just a political comeback—it's a warning. As the tendency towards fascism gains strength in the U.S., what does that mean for the world's most powerful empire? And what kind of resistance can actually stop it?On this episode of Dispatches, Rania Khalek is joined by Eugene Puryear to break down what rising fascism looks like in an American context, from the weaponization of ICE to the collapse of international law in Gaza, and why anti-imperialism must be at the heart of any movement that wants to fight back. They explore the legacy of US empire, the limits of liberalism, and the dangers of accelerationist fantasies as Gaza burns and the global order unravels.Watch the full episode by becoming a patron: Patreon.com/BreakthroughNews
Trump increased already huge tariffs today, bringing total tariffs on China to 125% of goods (at 104% at the time of recording). China has retaliated, and the stock market plunged $7 trillion in value after tariffs were announced last week (before bouncing back after this recording). Trump says this is about bringing back jobs, but what is the reality? The real “Trump program” is coming into focus as the administration dramatically changes U.S. domestic and foreign policy. It's “Robin Hood in reverse,” take from the poor to give to the rich. Trump and the billionaires are using the attack on DEI and “woke” policies as a Trojan horse for all-out war against Black America. They're targeting the achievements and reforms of the civil rights movement, which expanded democracy for all U.S. residents. The stage is now set for an epic battle about the direction of this country. Trump previewed his priorities in a press conference this week, saying he would consider military force to seize the Panama Canal and Greenland, declare the Gulf of Mexico the ‘Gulf of America,' and that “all hell will break out” if the Israeli hostages are not returned by the day he takes office on January 20, 2025. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump appear to be neck and neck in the presidential election, bringing the possibility of a second Trump term closer to reality. But would a Trump victory really bring the end of democracy and the rise of fascism? Brian Becker and Eugene Puryear put election 2024 in its historical context, reviewing key moments to understand this moment such as the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, the rise of Hitler's Germany, and the George Floyd uprisings. Over the past week, Israel has begun a major escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon with the "pager attack" on the Lebanese population, assassinations of senior Hezbollah leadership and airstrikes in southern Lebanon that has killed at least 500 people and led to thousands to flee their homes. Israel has called this strategy "De-escalation through escalation," and done it with the full support of the Biden-Harris administration. In our latest episode, Scott talks with host and producer of Breakthrough News Eugene Puryear about the escalation, how it effects politics and movement politics in the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign. They also talk in depth about the connections between the black liberation movement and the Free Palestine movement. They also discuss why black churches and organized labor have supported a ceasefire, why the mainstream environmental groups haven't. And finally how there is increasing support of socialism, dislike of capitalism in the U.S. and the backlash to that growing consciousness. This week we offer a special episode featuring Project Censored's recent “Decoding Democracy” series, a collection of interviews showcasing media scholars, journalists, and activists discussing how an informed public and an independent press are vital aspects of any free and just society. These excerpts are part of the larger Project Censored aim to empower individuals to better navigate the media landscape and political climate, becoming more engaged citizens. The focus of the series is to promote critical media literacy education while harnessing the power of a free and independent press to spur more broadly and deeply informed civic engagement among the electorate. Among the many commentators featured in the Decoding Democracy video series, and included in this radio broadcast, are Mnar Adley, Nora Barrows-Friedman, Eugene Puryear, and Victor Pickard. The post Decoding Democracy: Exploring Critical Media Literacy Education, Independent Journalism, and Civic Engagement appeared first on KPFA.
Just over 100 days away from the 2024 election, Joe Biden has dropped out of the race and endorsed Kamala Harris, signaling to the Democratic Party that there should be no debate, no other nominations and certainly no floor fight over delegates at the upcoming Democratic National Convention next month. This of course comes after a period where there were no real primaries for the Democratic Party. That's not unusual when a sitting President is running for reelection, but questions about Biden's ability to beat Donald Trump this year have lingered for quite some time.Today, we want to get into who Kamala Harris is, what interests she represents and what the absolute lack of democracy in the so-called Democratic Party means for social movements and real change through November and beyond. We're joined by activist, author and journalist Eugene Puryear, host of The Freedom Side Live on Breakthrough News.Support the Show.
Donald Trump just survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally, irreversibly changing the state of U.S. politics. How did the US end up with a two-party dictatorship? Are Trump and Biden really the only options? Does lesser evil voting work? If it's meant to prevent the worst case scenario, then how come it didn't prevent the genocide in Gaza? Is third party voting really as useless and fascist enabling as Democrats say? To discuss this and more Rania Khalek was joined by BT's Eugene Puryear. This is just part of this episode. The full interview is available for Breakthrough News Members only. Newly released treaty negotiation documents show that Ukraine and Russia were very close to ending the war—more than two years ago, in April 2022. But U.S. imperialists and NATO have worked with and strengthened the right-wing in Ukraine to achieve their long-term goals in the region, including endless war, no matter how many people die. Brian Becker is joined by Eugene Puryear, co-host of The Freedom Side, to discuss the newly revealed documents showing how the Ukraine war nearly ended two years ago but were sabotaged by the intervention of the White House and the Ukrainian far-right. They discuss how Ukraine's economy has been totally mortgaged to U.S. and European interests. Trump is beating Biden in the polls in several key swing states. The Democrats have pushed the logic of ‘the lesser of two evils' argument for years, yet the country has moved to the right. They give voice to many key issues people are struggling with, but their solutions never address the roots of them and often they sabotage their own meager solutions. The Socialist Program presents a new special 3-part, more than 5-hour-long podcast series on the legacy of Russian Marxist V.I. Lenin, based on a class series by Brian Becker at The People's Forum in November and December 2023, enhanced with historical audio recordings and more. This series provides a specific approach to studying Lenin's writings for a new generation of socialist organizers. It discusses the war in Gaza and the struggle of the Palestinian people for national liberation, and outlines Lenin's organizational and tactical outlook in the era of modern imperialism. This is Part 2 of Lenin and the Path to Revolution Below are details of historical audio clips included in this episode that may not be otherwise identified by listening: 12:28 - Eugene Puryear speaking at the National March On Washington for Palestine, November 4th 2023 30:04 - Brian Becker speaking at anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., January 18, 2003 56:37 - ‘John Brown's Body' - popular song in the U.S. Civil War 1:36:28 - Joe Biden (then a senator) speaking in Congress, 1986 /// Help make this show possible by joining our patreon community at patreon.com/thesocialistprogram
How can the Palestinian struggle for freedom and dignity take lessons from the Black Liberation Movement? Historical circumstances are clearly different yet there are similarities. Both are located in a colonial-like situation, where a powerful oppressor dominates another less powerful group. Racism is a major factor. The Black Liberation Movement and Malcolm X's eloquent voice and militant politics resonate with Palestinians struggling for their freedom. Liberation struggles are not easy. Resistance to change is entrenched. Power does not readily give up its prerogatives. 2CDs

In this conversation we welcome Eugene Puryear back to the podcast to talk about the recently published book The Black Belt Thesis: A Reader which was compiled by The Black Belt Thesis Study Group and features a foreword by Eugene Puryear. The reader itself was published by 1804 Books, and they have published a lot of really good stuff recently that I just want to take a moment to shout-out. They recently along with the Palestinian Youth Movement translated and published The Trinity of Fundamentals which hopefully we will be hosting a conversation on at some point soon. They also recently published a translation of Ghassan Kanafani's The Revolution of 1936-1939 in Palestine and of course the collection of Hugo Chavez's speeches that we discussed with Manolo de los Santos last year and much more. So I just say that to say if you go pick this book up from them, that there is a bunch of really good stuff you can grab while you're there. Eugene Puryear is a journalist, activist, politician, and host on Breakthrough News. He is a founding member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and is the author of Shackled and Chained: Mass Incarceration in Capitalist America. In this discussion we ask Eugene to contextualize the origins of the Black Belt thesis, to discuss some of the articulations and development of the thesis as undertaken by Comintern and the CPUSA. We discuss some of the organizing implications of it, its role in the development of the US communist movement particularly with regards to Black people, and the challenging of the problem of white racism as it exists within the history of the US left and white workers as well. Also Eugene discusses the centrality of national oppression within the political economy of US capitalism. Along the way we talk about some of the contributions from figures like W.E.B. Du Bois, Harry Haywood, Louis Thompson Patterson, Claudia Jones and others. A couple of other things I want to highlight is that we have been hosting a lot of conversations over on our YouTube page recently the majority of which we have not released as audio episodes. We will link that in the show notes, but also you can just find it by searching Millennials Are Killing Capitalism on YouTube. The other thing I want to note is we do have another round of our study group starting back up. For this cycle we will be reading Orisanmi Burton's amazing book Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression and the Long Attica Revolt. I can't wait to read that text and discuss it with folks so sign up for that if you're interested it will be on Wednesday nights at 7:30 PM ET starting on April 17th it is for patrons of the show and we'll put a link to that in the show notes as well. And as always the best way to support our work is to become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism The Black Belt Thesis: A Reader Millennials Are Killing Capitalism on YouTube Tip of the Spear Reading Group (for patrons)

Be it in the Mediterranean or the heart of Africa in Congo, colonialism isn't past, it's a modern day disaster. In the first half of the show, journalist and activist Eugene Puryear brings us information on the so-called silent holocaust taking place in the Congo, where some 6 million people have died as nations across the region and the world vie for the more than $24 trillion worth of natural resources within Congo's borders. Next up, Giulia Messmer from Sea Watch explains her organization's rescue work in the Mediterranean, how European nations are moving to criminalize migration, cross-border solidarity, and more. A series of regional conferences called the Dilemmas of Humanity are taking place in preparation for an international conference in South Africa in mid October. Clearing the FOG speaks with Eugene Puryear of BreakThrough News about the recent meeting in Atlanta, which is part of this process. Puryear speaks about the significance of the Stop Cop City movement and the necessity of leadership coming from frontline communities in the South. On July 26, former President Mohamad Bazoum was removed from power by a military general, Tchiani. This has set off a wave of condemnation and threats of military intervention from the US and France, for whom Bazoum proved to be a reliable ally. Thousands have rallied to support Niger's new leadership since July 26, reportedly carrying banners reading ”Down with France” and “Foreign bases out”. The US has about 1,100 troops in Niger and France has about 1,500.Rather than analyze the reasons behind abject poverty and anti-Western sentiment in Niger and much of the region, Western countries led by the US and France are pointing to Russian interest in the region while purposely ignoring their own neocolonial history. To understand the situation in Niger and how it impacts the rest of the African continent, and the greater geopolitical landscape, we're joined by Eugene Puryear, an author, activist and host of The Freedom Side on Breakthrough News.---To sign the petition we mentioned in the introduction opposing the McCarthyist attacks on those speaking out against a new Cold War with China, go to https://peoplesforum.org/sign-onSupport the show

Eugene Puryear, host on BreakThrough News, joins Rania Khalek and Kevin Gosztola to discuss the violence that has unfolded this past week in Sudan.Fighting has escalated between General Abdel Fattah Burhan and Sudan's military and General Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemedti) and a paramilitary force known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).During the conversation, Eugene describes who the players are and how the people of Sudan are caught in between their jostling for power. He also addresses the widespread claim that somehow Russia must be behind the skirmishes.Later, Kevin asks Eugene and Rania to comment on the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and their partnership with the Sesame Workshop on programming for children in Iraq. Samantha Power, a warmonger and poser for human rights who leads USAID, characterized the project in a very nauseating way.The show concludes with Eugene reacting to the U.S. Justice Department indicting Chairman Omali Yeshitela of the African People's Socialist Party and at least two other members affiliated with the Black liberation group. In 2022, the FBI targeted them in raids.Yeshitela spoke at an antiwar rally in Washington, D.C., on the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The demonstration, which was livestreamed by BreakThrough News, also called for diplomatic negotiations instead of further escalation in the war in Ukraine.
Africa's Sahel region is experiencing historic shifts as anti-colonial sentiment sweeps across the region, with the French military being kicked out of one country after another after failing to rout insurgencies fueled by their own policies. France and its allies have responded by blaming disinformation, authoritarianism, and the west's favorite boogeyman: Russia. Meanwhile the security situation in the Sahel continues to deteriorate. To help break it all down, Breakthrough News journalist Eugene Puryear joined Rania Khalek on Dispatches.
In this episode we begin by discussing some of the international news stories of the week, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran committing to a path towards re-establishing diplomatic ties through the negotiations held in Beijing with the help of China; the 10 year anniversary of the passing of Hugo Chavez, who took on the mantle of leading the Bolivarian Revolution along with his people; the recent US-Cuba Normalization conference held at Fordham University March 10-11; the upcoming Call to Action on March 15+16 to call the White House incessantly to demand Cuba be removed from the State Sponsor of Terrorism List; the upcoming rally and demonstration/march in DC on March 18th....along with a few other stories. We then transition to discussing the recent censorship of Black Power Media, an independent media coalition of incredible organizers, historians, educators and activists who were given a vague conclusion that they "engaged in election misinformation" leading to a 7-day post ban, and then told this was 1 of 3 strikes before their entire account is removed. Dr. Jared Ball was on BreakThrough News with Eugene Puryear and Rania Khalek talking about it and it struck a cord with me, so wanted to show love to the Comrade Jared Ball and all the folks at BPM, but also connect it to the confusion, lack of revolutionary awareness, consciousness, and history that the Western, Euro-Amerikan and European Left is ignorant of or intentionally ignoring. Let me know what you think! ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE!
The Real Path to Peace in Ukraine, a conference sponsored this month by the People's Forum and the ANSWER Coalition in New York City, was the kickoff of a new antiwar movement in the United States. People from all walks of life are opposing the U.S.-NATO proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, especially as the Zelenksy regime shows again its dangerous desperation. We feature for the hour journalist, author and activist Eugene Puryear and Green Party Candidate for the President of the United States, Dr. Jill Stein. They are both introduced by researcher and activist Manolo De Los Santos. The show is made possible only by our volunteer energy, our resolve to keep the people's voices on the air, and by support from our listeners. In this new era of fake corporate news, we have to be and support our own media! Please click here or click on the Support-Donate tab on this website to subscribe for as little as $3 a month. Emma hosts Dr. Nicholas Kardaras to discuss his recent book Digital Madness: How Social Media Is Driving Our Mental Health Crisis-and How to Restore Our Sanity. Then, Emma is joined by Eugene Puryear, co-host of the Breakthrough News show, to discuss the recent civil and social unrest in Haiti. Emma first runs through updates on FED policies bringing a big win for predatory payday lenders and a whole lot of bad stuff otherwise, before diving into the turmoil in the UK with PM Liz Truss stepping down just 44 days into her term. Doctor Nicholas Kardaras then joins as he and Emma get right into looking at remote schooling during the pandemic as the full melding of education and technology, with COVID coming at the tail end of a decade-and-a-half-long decline of mental health coinciding with a massive increase in screen time and immediately seeing rates of depression triple and rates of screentime double. After a brief conversation on the greater proof of correlation between screentime and rates of loneliness and feelings of isolation (with a very clear generational trend), they dive into how the whistleblowing of Frances Haugen brought to light how actively aware Facebook/Instagram was of the impact of their platforms on driving these conditions, and why the greater toxicity of these platforms isn't due to their unique algorithms (which really rely on the same playbook as any other platform) but their popularity. Wrapping up, they tackle the biggest policies the US government could take in breaking up the power of Big Tech and creating accountability for the impact of their products, exploring what a repeal of Section 230 would mean, what an anti-trust approach would entail, and the actual endpoints of their toxic programming. Then, Eugene Puryear gets right into parsing through the political developments in Haiti since the assassination of President (by decree at that point) Jovenel Moïse, somehow bringing about an even less legitimate reign of US-backed Ariel Henry, and solving none of the issues of unrest and state deterioration – instead pushing even more neocolonial policies onto a people who have been failed by a century out US interventionism. After a quick history of US intervention in Haiti, Puryear and Emma tackle the particular failure of the Biden Administration's treatment of Haiti, with their promotion of Henry largely stemming from his acceptance of their abusive policies to Haitian migrants – something that already forced the resignation of a US Special Envoys for Haiti. They wrap up the interview by parsing through what we can do to push US legislators towards developmental and state-building policies grounded in Haitian autonomy. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as Valerie from AZ calls in to discuss Mar-a-Lago modding, Sandy from Ontario dives into her city's politics, and Ben Shapiro discusses the difference between fake Jews (Israel Haters) and real Jews (Ben Shapiro disciples). Lara Logan and Eric Bolling discuss the shadow of the end of days that looms over America, and Chris from Hawaii dives into the evolution of the manosphere and the integral nature of projection and fear to that community's rhetoric. The crew also dives into DeSantis' entrapment of formerly-incarcerated people into voter fraud and Matt Walsh's devastating denouncement of anime. Vaughn from Washington discusses American education and its failure to confront uncomfortable issues, plus, your calls and IMs! Russia has been hit by multiple major attacks, including sabotage in their Nordstream energy pipelines and the explosion on the Crimean Bridge. The bridge is a vital supply route to and from the peninsula with military supplies. Russia responded with missiles hitting Kiev. As NATO and Europe send further weapons and technology, the war is quickly escalating. Where is it going? The Ukraine war is escalating—dramatically. Russian President Putin & U.S. President Biden both made major and dramatic speeches in the last day, after a successful and U.S.-backed Ukrainian counter-offensive earlier in the week. What did Putin and Biden reveal in their addresses and where is this headed? Brian is joined by Eugene Puryear, the host of the BreakThrough News podcast The Punch Out, co-host of the BT live video show The Freedom Side, and a writer, including the article “Should we really blame NATO for the Ukraine war?” Please make an urgently-needed contribution to The Socialist Program by joining our Patreon community at patreon.com/thesocialistprogram. A few months ago Democrats bragged that Americans were so supportive of President Biden's "unprecedented" Russia sanctions turning the ruble into rubble, that they couldn't wait to pay higher gas prices. But now that prices are higher with no end in sight, Americans are irate with high costs eating into their earnings, and Democrats and Republicans are pretending the sanctions they enacted have nothing to do with it. Meanwhile mainstream economists are warning of a possible recession and saying the only way to get inflation down is to raise interest rates and unemployment. And that's exactly the Fed's plan. To help us make sense of what's happening, how we got here, and what should be done to contain it, Rania Khalek is joined by Eugene Puryear, a journalist for Breakthrough News and host of The Punch Out.You can listen to all episodes of Rania Khalek Dispatches anywhere you get podcasts.0:00 Intro2:24 What's really behind inflation? 11:24 Sanctions on Russia20:22 Intentionally raising unemployment to save capitalism 32:16 What is a recession? As the U.S./NATO proxy war in Ukraine against Russia rages, the imperialist establishment is increasingly united behind a strategy of escalation. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says the United States is ready for anything after Russian officials warn of the danger of nuclear war. Brian and Eugene Puryear discuss how the NATO powers are implementing their strategy of fighting a long-term proxy conflict against Russia as well as Russia's move to end gas sales to Poland and Bulgaria amid all-out economic warfare waged by the west. They also put these current developments into a historical perspective and explore how relations between the peoples of the region were completely different during the Soviet period. After decades of nonviolent resistance, abolitionists take up arms and start killing pro-slavery forces in the lead to the Civil War. Prequel to our recent episode 'LIKE MEN OF WAR: How Black Soldiers Whipped the Confederacy' with Eugene Puryear of BreakThrough News.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy gave a high profile address to Congress calling for stepped up US involvement in the war — especially through the imposition of a "no-fly zone." While this idea is presented as a humanitarian move, the reality is that such an action would mean that the two largest nuclear-armed powers would be in a state of war with each other. Brian and Eugene Puryear discuss this and more of the latest developments in the Ukraine war.
