Abstract: We occasionally misinterpret ambiguous sensory input or report a stimulus when none is presented. It is unknown whether such errors have a sensory origin and reflect true perceptual illusions, or whether they have a more cognitive origin (e.g., are due to guessing), or both. When participants performed an error-prone and challenging face/house discrimination task, multivariate EEG analyses revealed that during decision errors (mistaking a face for a house), sensory stages of visual information processing initially represent the presented stimulus category. Crucially however, when participants were confident in their erroneous decision, so when the illusion was strongest, this neural representation flipped later in time and reflected the incorrectly reported percept. This flip in neural pattern was absent for decisions that were made with low confidence. This work demonstrates that decision confidence arbitrates between perceptual decision errors, which reflect true illusions of perception, and cognitive decision errors, which do not. Want to become a damn good elk hunter? You could listen to every elk hunting podcast in the world but until you develop a system you are going to stumble around in the woods trying to figure it out. What do every single one of the best elk hunters in the world have after years of honing their skills? a system. A system that allows them to find elk as soon as they hit the ground, get close to those elk, and then capitalize in the red zone. It's not some secret they know that know one else does, it's having a system and putting in the work. After interviewing hundreds of hunters and my own experience from the Oregon cost to the prairies of Montana I have put together my 4 step system in Elk Hunt 201 Course. Want to go from 101 to 201 this is the framework you need. Please note this is not for the newbie. If you are looking for a course on how to gut an animal this is not it. Chiam Loyd is a talented and tough young up and comer. He joined myself, Lampers, Mark Livesay, and Brad on this last bear hunt. It's a great conversation, enjoy.
Abstract: Predictions based on learned statistical regularities in the visual world have been shown to facilitate attention and goal-directed behavior by sharpening the sensory representation of goal-relevant stimuli in advance. Yet, how the brain learns to ignore predictable goal-irrelevant or distracting information is unclear. Here, we used EEG and a visual search task in which the predictability of a distractor's location and/or spatial frequency was manipulated to determine how spatial and feature distractor expectations are neurally implemented and reduce distractor interference. We find that expected distractor features could not only be decoded pre-stimulus, but their representation differed from the representation of that same feature when part of the target. Spatial distractor expectations did not induce changes in preparatory neural activity, but a strongly reduced Pd, an ERP index of inhibition. These results demonstrate that neural effects of statistical learning critically depend on the task relevance and dimension (spatial, feature) of predictions. Copy rights belong to original authors. Gentlemen, The idea of homesteading, and living off the land is something so foreign to us now. I’m think about it, when is the last time you had to WAIT for your favorite fruit to be in harvest for you to eat it. When is the last time you seriously had to WAIT at all? While I have enjoyed growing up with plenty of options to eat, and a grocery store right by my house I think my soul really missed something not being exposed to the idea of homesteading at a younger age. TUNE IN TODAY as we talk to some of my favorite folks The Lampers on why the homestead, and what benefits this could have on a marriage, family, and society at large. Gardening and hunting experts, Ryan and Hillary Lampers discuss why growing it yourself is the next step many need to take to stay healthy. Show Notes: https://highintensityhealth.com/224 Learn how to Garden: https://highintensityhealth.com/garden Key Takeaways 03:15 Bow hunting season is late summer/early fall, when the buck’s antlers are soft, full of blood and covered with velvet and October’s hunting season with guns, deer are hard horned and they stay in the dark timber. 05:31 Deer/elk antler velvet is sold as a testosterone /growth hormone booster. There is not much research pointing to deer/elk antler velvet being androgenic. 08:34 In most states, at age 10, children can take a hunter’s safety course and can receive a hunting license. 13:35 Bear fattened on blueberries is the Lampers family’s favorite meat. 18:08 Life sustains life. Hunters respect and care about animals. 22:59 We have a disconnect and ambivalence toward food and its value. It is one of the reasons that food waste statistics are staggering. 24:36 Food is at the core of life. A close connection to food helps to connect you to other important things in your life. 28:20 Back country hunting is hard work. The Lampers process and preserve their meat themselves. 33:18 The Lampers goal is eliminate the need for grocery store food. 34:59 Energy from an animal may be imparted to you when you consume it. 38:13 Organic does not mean that the animal was happy. Hunters take happy animals who live lives the way they were meant to be lived. 42:04 Nature generally eliminates unhealthy animals before the hunter can find it for food. 43:46 Hunting is about more than food. 45:32 The skill of hunting is something that is taught from one hunter to another. 51:55 Many of us do not understand hunting, known a hunter or know anything about hunting. 54:15 Hunting is highly regulated. 58:36 Ryan practices shooting every day. He wants to know that when he takes a shot at an animal that it will be a clean ethical shot. 01:01:01 You take the biggest animals, taking out the older animals that are no longer breeding. 01:01:51 Ryan makes all of his food for his hunting trips. 01:08:34 Cooking over a fire at camp after a hunt is one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. 01:11:02 Directly after the kill, the meat needs to be cooled. 01:12:46 The meat is bagged in a cloth bag to keep it clean and keep it away from bugs/flies. 01:14:40 Within one week, you can change your microbiome by hunting and gathering your own food. Your diversity increases. 01:17:18 Hunters are conservationists and environmentalists.
On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with Ryan and Hillary Lampers of Hunt, Harvest, Health. So… about a month back--Aron Snyder hit the big 4-0. And I’m well on my way to 43. We’re not exactly old, but we’re not spring chickens either. We’re fit for two older guys--in fact, we’re in better shape now than we were in our early 30s--and we’re pretty happy about that. But father-time isn’t backing down and it’s more important than ever to live well--both physically and emotionally. And that’s why I’m pleased to have Doctor Hillary Lampers and my good buddy Ryan Lampers, aka Donnie Vincent Lampers, on today’s episode of Gritty Bowmen. Ryan is an absolute stud when it comes to bowhunting public lands. And his wife Hillary is a doctor--but not your regular, everyday, run of the mill doctor that I generally mistrust except in the case of dire emergencies; Hillary is the kind of doctor that actually treats root causes of physical distress instead of simply prescribing drugs to treat symptoms. Hillary and Ryan started a podcast this past December called Hunt Harvest Health--and I’m so glad they did! I’ve been listening to their podcasts on backcountry meal prep, gardening, testosterone, cortisol and other hormones, gut health and the second brain, hunting and more. This past year has been a whirlwind of life-changing events for me. Admittedly, I’m not as fit or feeling quite as froggy as I did a year ago. If you’ve got little kids around while you’re listening to this podcast, you may want to revisit this episode when they’re not around. This is a talk about health--it’s not time to be squeamish. We talk about things like poop, S.E.X., how to increase testosterone, love languages, etc. You’ve been warned. Some of you may be thinking that this “health stuff” is boring or that this medical talk is way too complex--but it’s really not--and I truly believe it is life-changing information. So I encourage you to buck-up and take notes. And when you’re done with this podcast, go subscribe to the HUNT HARVEST HEALTH PODCAST and continue learning how to feed your Temple of Power.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I get to hang out with my friend, Ryan Lampers; although I call him Donnie Vincent Lampers. Ryan has a very Donnie Vincent-esque look that makes me think of films like Rivers Divide and Tera Nova--and when I look at Ryan, I find myself reciting Donnie lines in my head like, “Sometimes hunts go quick. Sometimes they take years. But one thing’s for sure, there’s always a story… and one that’s usually worth telling.” Or this line, “Don’t confuse me with being anything else other than proud. Proud to be a hunter. It’s time we stop apologizing for how we get our protein. This is who we are.” But Ryan is not Donnie. Although I would argue that he gives Donnie a run for his money in the cool hair department. Ryan is Ryan. A tough dude who consistently kills old and mature big game animals on public land on over-the-counter hunts, year after year. And his success rate doesn’t surprise me after watching him compete at my first Train To Hunt course in Enumclaw Washington earlier this year. Ryan can shoot--most importantly, he can shoot under extreme pressure. I watched him do this at two Train To Hunt events. And I tried mightily to throw him off his game--heckling and taunting him. Sticking a camera in his face and threatening to show the world his failures. All in good fun, of course. I was impressed. And not only can he shoot, he can grind physically; winning a podium spot at three separate Train To Hunt Challenge Events. And he’s a cool dad to boot. On this podcast we talk about what it takes to be a good hunter. I ask Ryan how he succeeds on public land, OTC hunts on big, big-animals every year. It’s good stuff. I really like Ryan Lampers. You will too.
