Does wearing a helmet make cyclists "less human"? We speak to the academic behind the study + Tour de France does Netflix review!

On episode 53 of the road.cc Podcast, George and Ryan are joined by Dr Mark Limb, the academic behind a recent much-discussed study from Australia which concluded that cyclists are perceived to be less than fully human, and that those who wear helmets and hi-vis gear while riding their bikes are viewed as less human than those who do not. An urban planner, lecturer, and self-described utility cyclist, Dr Limb says he was inspired to study the public's perceptions of people who rides bikes after being “shocked” at another recent study which found that cyclists are dehumanised by an alarming percentage of the population. In an in-depth and interesting interview, he discusses the role of helmets and hi-vis gear in categorising and potentially ‘othering' cyclists in the eyes of other road users. He also explains the limitations of his recent research, which he describes as a “pilot study”, and the need for a more in-depth look at the ‘othering' of road users and why cyclists can be dehumanised, as well the all-important relationship between infrastructure and the creation of a “normal and safe” cycling culture. Normalising cycling, he concludes, is key to humanising those who ride bikes. In part two of the episode, Ryan, Suvi, and Adwitiya chat about the Netflix series we've all been binging the past few weeks: Tour de France Unchained. The trio discuss the series, who exactly it's aimed at, and how well it captures the essence of professional cycling and its biggest bike race. Oh, and they also come up with a few animal-inspired pitches for the sequel…

Melodie Thurman is a native Portland resident.  Born and raised on a farm outside of Portland, Melodie was a tough girl who could keep up with the boys, and bucked her share fair of hay, chased cows, and assisted in all manner of farm chores. Melodie’s life changed between the ages of four and five when she became the victim of sexual abuse that lasted for six long years. Once free, Melodie has fought to change the conversation.  She knew from her own experience that there is no point in trying to understand or move past sexual abuse.  It isn’t something she ever wants to understand. The abuse that she lived through is something she will keep front and center, as a constant reminder to never stop fighting for those who can’t, speaking for the voiceless, and encouraging those who have been affected by sexual abuse to accept who they are in spite of it.   Melodie just finished her first book on changing the conversation around sexual abuse and has dedicated her life to continuing to change the conversation around the world.  Melodie believes that if we are ever going to see things change, the survivors have to stand up and speak out. Melodie’s book title was born from all her experiences. “All the things I wish you never said. ~ a survivor's guide to talking about sexual abuse.” Melodie found that the more she talked about sexual abuse the more she realized how large the gap is between survivors and those who have not experienced it personally.  She realized how much the survivors need those on the other side and how, with a little guidance, those very people can actually help to bring about healing and acceptance. Social Justice Warriors tell us we must never criticize people's feeling or desires, no matter the cost. They say this makes us more humane. But what if doing so actually makes us less human? In this show, we'll explore the three great virtues of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty and discuss why a feelings-based culture actually makes us more like animals than it does human beings.

Seven years ago chatbots - those robotic texting machines - were a mere curiosity. They were noticeably robotic and at their most malicious seemed only capable of scamming men looking for love online. Today, the chatbot landscape is wildly different. From election interference to spreading hate, chatbots have become online weapons. And so, we decided to reinvestigate the role these robotic bits of code play in our lives and the effects they’re having on us. We begin with a little theater. In our live show “Robert or Robot?” Jad and Robert test 100 people to see if they can spot a bot. We then take a brief detour to revisit the humanity of the Furby, and finish in a virtual house where the line between technology and humanity becomes blurrier than ever before. This episode was reported and produced by Simon Adler. Our live event was produced by Simon Adler and Suzie Lechtenberg. Support Radiolab today at Radiolab.org/donate. Note from the Managing Editor: In the original version of our “More or Less Human” podcast, our introduction of neuroscientist Mavi Sanchez-Vives began with mention of her husband, Mel Slater. We’ve edited that introduction because it was a mistake to introduce her first as someone’s wife. Dr. Sanchez-Vives is an exceptional scientist and we’re sorry that the original introduction distracted from or diminished her work.   On a personal note, I failed to take due note of this while editing the piece, and in doing so, I flubbed what’s known as the Finkbeiner Test (all the more embarrassing given that Ann Finkebeiner is a mentor and one of my favorite science journalists). In addition to being a mistake, this is also a reminder to all of us at Radiolab that we need to be more aware of our blind spots. We should’ve done better, and we will do better.  - Soren Wheeler

Most of our societal problems stem from not respecting our nature, chiefly our natural inclinations for movement, nutritious food, and time outdoors away from digital stimulation. There is a community role in fitness and promoting healthy lifestyle change. Eating healthier and working out are far harder to do against the tide of a culture that doesn’t value these things, and our education system fails to create any understanding of competency in physical literacy or nutrition. Justin Lind and Shane Trotter explore these issues and more. They make a case for shifting your training mindset toward skill acquisition, and examine why kettlebells and calisthenics are ideal tools for this approach. They discuss the societal causes of poor mental health that may relate to the rise of mass shootings, exploring the role of an environment devoid of outlets for physical, mental, and emotional health. This is a thought-provoking discussion that touches on everything from the relative academic performance of boys and girls, to play, rites of passage, and physical education. Mental health and physical health cannot be conceived of separately. We should seek to train the whole person with an understanding of the inseparable dependency of our physical, emotional, and mental states. People are starving for what the fitness community offers. It is up to us to bring them in the door.

Michelle Killebrew is a “social optimist.” In this episode of The Social Network Show, she speaks with listeners about her conviction that social technology is helping us be more human, rather than less, as many fear. Ms. Killebrew leads customer-centered marketing strategy for Social Business at IBM. Since earning a BS in Economics at Santa Clara University in the heart of Silicon Valley, Michelle has worked in IBM's Enterprise Marketing Management division, thoroughly integrating Coremetrics analytics into campaigns. She then headed up IBM's World Wide go-to-market and demand generation organization in the Smarter Commerce initiative. Now she is refining the definition of social business and creating research-based content to guide businesses in embracing it. Together Michelle and Dr. J discuss whether engagement with online communication seal us off from genuine face-to-face relationships. Whether we are inclined toward optimism or skepticism, it is important to realize that technology can be used for good or ill. Public engagement in debate and analysis of the issues involved, such as privacy, security, social skills, and human empathy, is crucial, while apathy and defeatism is a worse enemy than any of the threats technology presents. Michelle Killebrew's talk on this subject, delivered at TEDx, University of Nevada in Reno, can be watched on YouTube and you can visit her website to learn more about Michelle. Michelle Killebrew is passionate about marketing, especially innovative online marketing strategies that deliver a superior brand experience - from initial acquisition through to loyal customer - and increase growth and profitability. She currently leads the go-to-market strategy for IBM Social Business, where her team focuses on messaging and solutions that define social business and demonstrate how organizations can embrace this next information revolution in the workforce. Previously, she headed up the worldwide go-to-market and revenue-bearing demand generation campaign strategy for IBM's new Smarter Commerce initiative, where her team was responsible for marketing B2B/commerce and enterprise marketing management solutions to meet the needs of the empowered customer. Michelle has over 15 years of high-tech marketing and holds a B.S. in Economics from Santa Clara University. You can connect with Michelle on LinkedIn and read her recent articles on ClickZ
