Ecologies of Care in Times of Climate Change: Water Security in the Global Context (Policy Press, 2024) investigates and analyses places in Europe, North America and Asia that are facing the immense challenges associated with climate change adaptation. Presenting real-world cases in the contexts of coastal change, drinking water and the cryosphere, Michael Buser shows how the concept of care can be applied to water security and climate adaptation. Exploring the everyday and often hidden ways in which water security is accomplished, the book demonstrates the pervasiveness and power of care to contribute to flourishing lives and communities in times of climate change. Michael Buser is an Associate Professor of Community Collaborative Practice at the University of the West of England, based in Bristol. Before that, he earned degrees in the Fine arts and Urban and Regional Planning. Michael has explored through his research, both developing an understanding, and subsequently addressing, the challenges that people and communities face while living in fragile and precarious environments. Of such, many of his applied research projects have been in South Asia and the UK, ranging from mental health and wellbeing to water security and climate adaptation. Based on this work, he was twice the winner of the Researcher of the Year within his University's Dept. of Architecture and Built Environment. In The Promise of Sunrise: Finding Solace in a Broken World (Green Writers Press, 2025), a former Bronx Zoo zoologist and award-winning nature writer, Ted Levin, spent Covid rediscovering his valley and the joys of watching the season pass, day by day by day. The book is a chronicle of his rediscovery of the Thetford, Vermont hillside on which he lived and a recounting of the daily joys of observing home ground as Levin (like many of us) was forced by Covid to stay home for nearly two years. In the end, he sold his home and moved to Hurricane Hill in Hartford, Vermont, which ends the narrative, although he continues the same routine. Ted has been a Naturalist at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and then was a teaching zoologist at the Bronx Zoo in New York.  After studying Ornithology in graduate school, he served as a Naturalist at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich VT … and also was on the faculty of New England College in Henniker, NH. This book, is the latest in a long list of his books and publications going back to the 1980s. besides his previous natural history books, he has written and illustrated a book for preschoolers, contributed to a photo journal on the Everglades and has provided illustrations for two books on poetry. His many articles can be found in such publications as The New York Times, News Day, The Guardian, Audubon Magazine and even Sports illustrated. Of particular note, Ted won the prestigious John J. Burroughs Medal, a recognition that hi-lights the best of natural history writing. Each day, every single person in the United States, all 324 million, discards about five pounds of waste. Be it a bottle that gets placed in a recycling bin or a piece of paper crumpled and tossed into the waste bin, every bit of the daily 1.6 billion pounds cast-off has a story. Everyone's Trash: One Man Against 1.6 Billion Pounds (Peter E. Randall Publisher, 2024) is full of those stories. It will wake you up and give you hope. As the author, Duncan Watson, says, "More people in America recycle than vote. Recycling is more popular than Democracy!" Watson began his personal trash journey in his pre-teens as an attendant at a small municipal recycling center in Northern California. After a brief stint as a child voice actor for Charlie Brown, he spent several years wandering the resource management desert looking for a better paying gig. He has been a restaurateur in his family's restaurant, and done a number of other stints in the hospitality arena. He has worked at the US EPA, and for the last 30 + years worked for the City of Keene. NH's Dept. of Public Works. During that time, he was honored with a Recycler of the Year Award and he was also inducted into the “Hall of Fame” by the Northeast Resource Recovery Association. He has also spent many years on the Board of that regional cooperative market for recyclables. He did receive a master's degree in Resource Management and Administration from Antioch New England Graduate School. Professor Michael Simpson has been the Director of the Resource Management and Administration graduate program at Antioch University New England, in Keene, NH.  Currently, he is participating in the Circular and Low Carbon (CALC) project, in conjunction with International Sold Waste Association and the City of Rotterdam, NL. For more than a decade, Ethan Tapper has been recognized as a thought-leader and a disruptor in the worlds of forestry, conservation, and ecosystem stewardship. He has many years of experience managing private and public forestlands. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, including Forester-of-the-Year, by the Northeast-Midwest Foresters Alliance. Ethan lives in Northern Vermont, where he manages a 175-acre forest and homestead called ‘Bear Island'…and rumor has it he is a musician in a punk-rock band. In his tender and fearless literary debut, Tapper proffers a more complex vision. He writes that we must act now in order to protect ecosystems, and that the actions we must take will often be counterintuitive, uncomfortable, even heartbreaking. In striking prose, he shows how bittersweet acts—like loving deer and hunting deer, loving trees and felling trees—can be radical expressions of compassion. In this poetic and visionary book, Tapper weaves a new land ethic for the modern world, reminding us that what is simple is rarely true, and what is necessary is rarely easy. Countless decisions await. There are no perfect solutions; only endless bittersweet compromises. How to Love a Forest: The Bittersweet Work of Tending a Changing World (Broadleaf Books, 2024) offers a clear-eyed, hopeful vision of a world in which so much is wrong and so much is worth saving. Michael Simpson has been actively working, researching and teaching in the watershed management and wetlands fields for 40 years. He is a licensed wetlands scientist where he has conducted numerous delineations, wetland assessments and restorations employing a variety of assessment approaches and data collection procedures, as well as designing wetlands for treatment of NPS run-off and wastewater. He has also held a position as graduate school Professor at Antioch University New England, where he has taught courses in wetlands ecology, watershed science and management, climate science & climate vulnerability and adaptation His primary research has been funded by both US EPA and NOAA, which has focused upon impact to natural systems and built infrastructure in riparian corridors and estuaries, from changes in land-use combined with increases in storm intensity and frequency due to projected climate change. Join Dave as he talks with writer and New York Times contributor Aatish Taseer about what he saw last year when he went on pilgrimages into the hearts of three faiths. To watch the episode, download the #e360tv channel app to your streaming device–Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV–or your mobile device. You can even watch it on the web.Devin: What is your superpower?Jen: My superpower is seeing connections between different topics–different passions that people have. To me, the connection between shopping local and investing local is all the same.Jen Risley is the operations manager for the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), a national nonprofit working to advance the interests of local businesses; she also serves as the editor of the Main Street Journal, a publication advocating for local investing, especially via crowdfunding.Jen's roles harmonize remarkably well. She simultaneously encourages people to shop and invest in local businesses. She describes AMIBA's holiday season push to encourage local shopping this way:From November 1st till the end of the year, we're trying to remind people to shift as much spending as they can to locally-owned businesses. So, from your meals and celebrations to your gifts and gift-making supplies, there are just lots of opportunities to make those decisions to buy locally. It doesn't have to just be those big gifts. It could be what you eat during the day. We're trying to make it clear to people that there are just lots of choices over the holiday season. We're here to help remind you to make those shifts in your spending. The more you spend locally, the more dollars recirculate in your local economy. That means more jobs for your community. It could mean a summer job for your teenager or your grandchild. It means more charitable contributions to the causes that you care about, and it means it could potentially influence what your town or your city looks like in terms of land use. So there are lots of things that happen when you choose to buy local.Similarly, she makes the case for local investing under the Main Street Journal (a substack newsletter) banner:The Main Street Journal is through Michael Shuman. He's a local economist and an author. He spends a lot of time looking at how people can move their money from Wall Street to Main Street through investment crowdfunding where they live.On our website, we have [investment opportunities] allocated by region. So, if you live in the southwest, you could see this huge list. But you can go to the southwest and go, “Oh wait, is there anything in Utah or Arizona?”Of local investing, Jen says, “Their success means your success!”In her work, Jen uses her passion for connecting ideas as a superpower.AI Episode Summary* The guest, Jen Risley, is the operations manager at the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) and the editor of the Main Street Journal.* The focus of the conversation is on the importance of shopping local and supporting locally-owned businesses.* The initiative, known as Shop Indie Local, aims to encourage people to shift their spending to local businesses from November 1st to the end of the year.* Shopping local helps to support the local economy, create jobs, and contribute to charitable causes in the community.* It is easy to be tempted by the convenience and affordability of online platforms like Amazon, but shopping local has a more significant impact on the community.* Tips for shopping locally include making a conscious decision to shift some spending, asking friends for recommendations, starting small with local food options, and exploring local farmer's markets or co-ops.* Jen also works on promoting local investing through crowdfunding in the Main Street Journal.* Local investing through crowdfunding platforms like Wefunder helps to support local businesses and allows investors to make a profit.* By connecting different topics and passions and sharing them on social media, Jen believes that she can inspire others to learn and make connections as well.* Jen encourages people to follow hashtags related to their interests on social media platforms, engage with the conversations, and share their own findings and insights with others. How to Develop Connecting Ideas As a SuperpowerJen's superpower is connecting ideas. She recalls how she first employed that ability for impact during college:I wound up going to Kenya, um, for a semester program, which was something I've always wanted to do but never had the opportunity because of living in a household with a single mom. We never really had the opportunity to travel or get exposed to different cultures like that. I was able to go through my university and have that chance to see how different life can be, how different life is to so many people around the world. I went from thinking small in my suburban town to thinking huge and realizing that everything I ever thought about the world was completely not wrong but just completely limited. By having that experience and coming back from it with a whole new mind view. One of the things that I took with me from that experience was my relationship to food and just how strange it was when my homestay brother was saying, “You go to school all day, or you go to university, who stays at home and makes the food?” I started to explain, “Well, we have grocery stores that we go to…” I realized as I was trying to explain to him what my reality was, how strange the reality became. When I came back home and started looking around and going, “Wow, this really seems wrong to me,” I was able to connect with other people who were doing great work in my community. We started working with some of the local farmers in our community. Back then, bovine growth hormone was the big topic. It was just thinking about how farmers were producing milk and learning from them, why they weren't happy with going in the direction others were telling them to go in terms of their local food system. That was one great opportunity to get frustrated with the system, learn from people who were in the system, and then again, share what I was learning and connect with other people to hopefully change some other people's minds. That was a great experience and taught me a lot that I'm still carrying with me.Having developed this ability to connect ideas, Jen offers some guidance for developing this skill:If we're talking about social media or online media, it's just starting with a platform that you're interested in or that you're already using. I use a lot of hashtags, so I'll start following a hashtag that is connected with something that I want to learn. So, if it's cooperatives or it's employee-owned businesses, you learn what hashtags people use. Then, every day or so, I start to look at the stream of conversation that's happening around that topic. On Twitter or whatever it's called now, I'll like whatever I want to read later, and then I'll go back to it. So, I'll have all these different primary resources to look at.Then, something that I've been lucky to be able to do is we have a weekly paper, and so they let me write an article every month. As I'm looking to see what topics are coming up, I know eventually, I'm going to have to write something that is accessible to enough people in my community. So yeah, I'm learning. But then I have to figure out, “Okay, my neighbors, are they going to care about employee-owned businesses? How can I make that a little bit more important to them?”So it is that kind of like putting your ear up to social media, having questions, but then seeing what other people are talking about and then finding a way, whether it's a blog post or on Substack or something, that's going to hold you accountable for actually producing something that you can then share with others. With Jen's guidance and example, you can improve your ability to connect ideas and communicate them. With practice, you may make this a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest ProfileJen Risley (she/her):Director of Operations, American Independent Business AllianceAbout American Independent Business Alliance: The mission of AMIBA is to build a strong local economy movement by supporting the growth and development of local business alliances and networks that are committed to the following objectives:- Supporting local independent businesses in growing and thriving- Building a strong local economy that is diverse, inclusive, and equitable- Working to mitigate climate change and adapt to the damage brought on by global warmingWebsite: https://amiba.netTwitter Handle: @theAMIBACompany Facebook Page: http://facebook.com/theAMIBAOther URL: https://monadnock.thelocalcrowd.coopBiographical Information: Jen served as an early organizer of her local food co-op in 2007. Devin: What is your superpower?Jen: I think my superpower is finding the connections between things, meaning connections between different pursuits or different silos or different movements.Jen Risley of the American Independent Business Alliance, commonly abbreviated as AMIBA and pronounced like amoeba, joined me for a great conversation about the power of moving our money to deploy it locally. AMIBA has been advocating for local businesses for a long time. Traditionally, its Move Your Money Month effort in April has focused on moving your banking to a local community bank or credit union. This year, the team has expanded the scope to include more discussion of local investing, including through crowdfunding.AI Summary* Jen Riseley is the Director of Operations for the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA).* AMIBA's Move Your Money Month initiative encourages investment in independent businesses through community banks, credit unions, and crowdfunding.* Riseley discusses the evolution of local business support and changes in the banking industry.* She shares information about AMIBA's Choose Indie Sustainable Month, which promotes cooperatively owned businesses and triple-bottom-line businesses.* Riseley discusses her personal story and interest in local economy work.* She sees connecting different ideas and movements as her superpower for promoting local businesses and building community.* Jen encourages people to support local businesses and utilize resources like the AMIBA website and social media.* She emphasizes the importance of investing in and supporting local communities.* Jen shares tips for making strategic connections between ideas.Jen found her passion for local business about a decade ago. “I got really interested in forming a food co-op in our community. So, that is kind of what sucked a lot of my energy and enthusiasm in from working with all these locally owned businesses to create a local food co-op that was going to boost our local food system.”The co-op she helped form is thriving. “It's been wildly, fantastically successful,” she says.“It was just amazing that we could go from opening a store to expanding seven years later, surviving COVID and then thriving and able to celebrate on the other side of everything,” Jen says.Throughout her career, Jen has developed an ability to find connections between disparate efforts to create success. How to Develop Connecting Movements As a SuperpowerPart of what drives Jen's superpower is a powerful curiosity. “It's hard for me to stay in one lane,” she says. Her work at the co-op helped bring together separate parts of the local economy built around food to benefit them all through collaboration.Jen sees her leadership in AMIBA's Shop Indie Art Month as an example of what comes out of her superpower. Rather than conceive of art in a traditional sense, she broadened the effort to essentially include all creators.Jen offers a couple of suggestions for enhancing your ability to make these sort of connections.First, she says, it starts with a love of research, which grows out of a genuine desire to understand a topic. You don't have to limit yourself to boring academics; she notes that she finds social media to be a fun and relevant way to learn about a topic.Second, she sees a need to consciously seek an outcome. She is often working against a calendar for one of the local business-themed months at AMIBA or in her monthly article in the local paper. Having a specific deadline for a product helps to activate her thinking. Finally, she focuses on making her work relevant to other people. This, I think, is a lynchpin piece of her model. It is when she starts thinking about how a topic or movement that is important to one group of people may be relevant to other groups that she makes the connections that define her superpower.By following Jen's advice and counsel, you can make connecting movements into a skill that could become a superpower, enabling you to do more good in the world.Jen will speak at SuperCrowd23. She'll be a vital part of a panel discussion entitled, “Why Founders Who Know How to Network Raise More Money.” This will be a great session for entrepreneurs. Research interests include the social impacts of tourism and sustainable tourism in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with three college professors — Professor Joe Conto, Professor Eric Holmlund, and Associate Professor Kelly Cerialo. This week's discussion focuses on sustainable tourism and how it links into the new Master's program that Paul Smith's College offers. My guests share the inspiration behind launching the new program and their vision for how it will support the long-term professional education of those in the travel and tourism space. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Why everyone is so excited about the new Master's program in Sustainable Tourism Management Why sustainability is a thread that's woven through many of the courses at Paul Smith's College Who the program is for, including mid-career professionals and people newly out of their undergraduate education who want to gain an environmental credential When you can apply to the new Master's program The importance of balancing out the social, economic, and environmental impacts of tourism How the current Paul Smith's College students are receiving the idea of this new program What sparked the idea and gave the team their inspiration for the new program Studying Sustainable Tourism Management What's unique about the model that Paul Smith's College has built for their brand new Sustainable Tourism Management Master's is that it is a low residency model which enables people from various backgrounds and industries to join. Professor Kelly describes the types of students that they are expecting to enroll in the new degree, from mid-career professionals interested in learning more about sustainability who may or may not currently work in the tourism sector, to entrepreneurs working in a tourist destination who are interested to learn more about sustainability, to recent graduates in the travel and tourism sector. Sustainability is a Headline Theme Sustainability is something that the current students at Paul Smith's College have in mind all the time. Professor Kelly shares more about why the upcoming generation of travel and tourism professionals is drawn to sustainability as a headline theme. Professor Paul shares his discussions with former students who are out in the workforce about their interest in returning to further study, focusing on sustainability because it is an area they see as the future but also personally important to them. One of the most significant shifts he has seen over the last 10-12 years is the genuine belief that sustainability is a necessity in every industry. Inspiration for the New Program Professor Eric discusses why Paul Smith College is launching the Sustainable Tourism Management Master's and why they feel that now is the right moment to include the new program in the offering. All three guests share their pleasure that sustainability really is a leading issue in the consciousness, psyche, and future strategy of students graduating in the last ten years. They highlight that sustainability is more than a buzzword; it's a strategy for both surviving and flourishing into the future. In this episode, I talk to my friend Becca Berkey about the more recent pivotal moments in her life – the convergence of many nearly simultaneously. In one year, Becca got pregnant at 37, lost two family members on the same day, and then the world shut down due to the pandemic. But the most interesting part about her story is her journey that brought her to live authentically – driven by her values. My favorite part of this story is how she describes her journey – as a vase with cracks that eventually shattered to be reborn as something new, perhaps a mosaic table. We are a product of our journeys, and I hope many moments of Becca's journey resonate deeply and help someone feel slightly less alone.Becca Berkey is an interdisciplinary learner, researcher, and educator with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Butler University, a Master's degree in College Student Personnel from Miami University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England. The ALL ME® Podcast Mental Health: Current State of Collegiate Athletes – Dr. Chelsi Day In 2022 alone, 3 college student athletes took their own life due to the pressures of trying to balance performing at the highest level of their sport and in the classroom while also trying to maintain a healthy social life. It's evident how difficult that is and the pressure it puts on a young individual. What are the primary factors that are contributing to the mental health issues and illness found in collegiate sports? How can young athletes successfully manage everything and still have adequate balance between life and sport? Should parents of young athletes not demand so much of their children, especially when it comes to being successful in that sport. These are the questions we discuss with Dr. Chelsi Day, Sports Psychologist for The Ohio State University Athletics Department. About Chelsi Day, PsyD Dr. Chelsi Day is a licensed psychologist who specializes in clinical sport psychology. She was a diver at Miami University where the team won two MAC Championships during her time. Following her tenure as a Redhawk, she obtained a master's degree in sport psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a master's degree from Antioch University New England followed by a doctorate in clinical psychology from Antioch. She has worked in private practice with high school, Olympic, and professional athletes, in college counseling settings, and most recently was the director of counseling and sport psychology at Indiana University before joining the OSU SPAWS staff in the fall of 2019.
