Continuing their examination of the assumptions underlying today's dominant AI narrative, David and Kate explore the distinction between AI as a product and AI as a sociotechnical system. They reflect on the often-invisible infrastructure, labour, resources, and governance structures that sit behind AI technologies, and discuss why understanding these systems is essential for making informed choices about technology, impact, and innovation. The conversation highlights how different assumptions about ownership, trust, and accountability shape the technologies we build and the societies they serve.

Campus Talks: What lies behind the success - or failure - of international branch campuses?

Times Higher Education

International branch campuses are back in the spotlight with countries including India, Vietnam and Greece opening to foreign institutions for the first time. And with international student flows coming under pressure from government policies, stretched student finances and emerging host countries, transnational education (TNE) and branch campuses offer an effective alternative for reaching overseas students. But while there are many success stories of now well-established branch campuses all over the world, there have also been plenty of failures. There are currently 387 international branch campuses open across 85 countries. A further 73 have opened and then closed, according to research by C-BERT. So, what causes some international branch campuses to flourish while others collapse? To find out, I spoke to Christine Ennew, who served as provost and CEO of the University of Nottingham Malaysia from 2013 to 2016, having been part of the team who travelled to Kuala Lumpur in 2000 to establish this pioneering branch campus. Christine spent five years as pro vice-chancellor at the University of Nottingham and most recently was provost at the University of Warwick until she retired in 2023. We discuss the thinking behind branch campus endeavours, what is needed for sustained success, common criticisms of branch campuses and what impact, if any, the UK government's new international education strategy may have. For more insight on related topics, check out our spotlight guide on how to deliver value for international students.

A famous journalist once wrote, “The true secret of editing is to know what to place in the wastebasket.” That's good counsel for those who seek to live in grace during 2026 as well. The secret of successful living is knowing what to throw away, what to forget, what to discard. In the desk of life from 2025 there are likely many things you'd do better to be without. Throw away the slights and the insults you received in the old year. Hanging on to them this long has already caused you to be something less than the kind and gracious person you've wanted to be. Throw away the grudges you've nourished during the last 12 months. Though they've probably provided you with many moments of bitter satisfaction, they haven't deepened your faith or your kindness even a little. In 2026, collect coins if you wish; collect stamps; collect postcards; collect tropical fish. But don't collect grudges. They are part of what lies behind that ought to be forgotten. And finally, throw away your sins when you've repented of them, for Jesus promises to do the same: “I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more” (Heb 8:12). “As far as the east is from the west, so far He removes our transgressions from us” (Psa 103:12). Grace lets us lean into the future with joy and expectation. So stay in it. -Bill Knott

Jurors aren't just weighing evidence in the Brian Walshe case — they're weighing behavior. They're deciding which version of events feels psychologically possible, which narrative aligns with human behavior, and which actions simply don't match the story being told. Today, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott helps us understand the psychological patterns prosecutors are highlighting. We explore why certain types of deception — calculated lies, rehearsed narratives, contradictory explanations — point to deeper issues than simple panic or misunderstanding. Shavaun walks us through the mechanics of deceit: how people maintain double lives, how they separate public persona from private behavior, and what happens internally when the truth starts closing in. We look at the early-morning searches revealed in court and discuss what they suggest about planning, awareness, and emotional state. We also examine the defense's theory that Ana died suddenly and Brian responded in fear rather than violence. Shavaun explains what a real shock response looks like, how grief manifests, and why certain behaviors line up more with self-protection than panic. Then we broaden the view: the warning signs in troubled relationships, the risk spike when someone prepares to leave, the emotional danger of perceived betrayal, and what it means when financial motive intersects with escalating conflict. These are the patterns professionals see every day in cases that end in violence. Shavaun's perspective gives viewers the tools to understand not only this case, but the psychology behind deception itself — and why credibility is often the real battleground inside the courtroom. #HiddenKillers #BrianWalsheTrial #PsychologyExplained #TrueCrimeInsights #ShavaunScott #CrimeBehavior #CourtroomCoverage #AnaWalshe #ManipulationTactics #TrueCrimeCommunity Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? A Trump White House video blames Democrats for the government shutdown — accusing them of pushing $1.5 trillion in spending, “open borders,” and even “health care for illegal aliens.” Chris Cuomo shows how these exaggerated claims are designed to stoke anger, divide voters, and make outrage the easiest path to political wins. Cuomo examines why both parties exploit grievance, how shutdown threats are more about blame than solutions, and the growing role of social media in fueling America's hate machine. He challenges the idea that division is inevitable — and asks what it would take for Americans to stop rewarding politics of outrage. In this week's session, we dive deeper into Brian's inner world as he unpacks the painful feeling of being a “second-class citizen” in his relationship with Bethany. What does it mean to feel unimportant to the person you love and how does that hurt turn into anger? We explore how Brian's anger is rooted in a longing for connection, not control, and how his unspoken sadness transforms into name calling as he's trying everything he can in his power trying to be heard.  Meanwhile, we examine how Bethany copes with his anger, often retreating and rationalizing, which only deepens their disconnection. This episode is about building awareness and learning to catch the hurt before it becomes a fight. This week's prompt: Think about a time you felt overlooked or unimportant in your relationship. Where did you notice the feeling come up in your body? In this explosive conversation, former School District teacher Laura Boulton reveals the disturbing pattern of institutional failure that she uncovered during her 23-year teaching career. What began as standard mandatory reporting of student disclosures about sexual assault evolved into something far more sinister—a suspected pedo ring within the district with connections potentially dating back to the 1980s.Boulton, an immigrant from Malaysia who built her American dream through education, shares how her commitment to student safety ultimately cost her the career she loved. After students reported sexual misconduct to her—both peer-to-peer incidents and staff-student violations—she discovered the district was systematically mishandling these reports, directing teachers to report only to administrators rather than law enforcement as legally required. The consequences for Bolton's advocacy were severe. Twice suspended and eventually forced to resign, she faced what she describes as the district's four-part strategy: "delay, deny, discredit, distract." Yet in a bewildering contradiction, the district paid her $400,000 in a settlement while simultaneously banning her from all district properties until 2027.Through her nonprofit Phoenix Advocacy, Boulton now helps families navigate similar situations, working with law enforcement and politicians to reform mandatory reporting protocols. Her message is clear: the safety of our children must transcend politics, institutional reputation, and personal career considerations. For parents, educators, and concerned citizens, this conversation serves as both a warning and a call to action. As Boulton powerfully states, "We were all children once and we all deserve to be safe."To learn more about her story, CLICK HERE. Today's show opens with a huge win for women and girls in sports! Donald Trump just signed and Executive Order removing men from women's sports and women's spaces and he gave credit to swimmer Riley Gaines for being a leader in that movement. Even CNN had to admit nearly 80% of the country is also in favor. Michael Shellenberger puts out a piece in Public identifying both USAID and the CIA as being behind the 2019 impeachment of Donald Trump. The same PsyOps and color revolution tactics used overseas can easily be seen being used here in America. As a reminder, we get a montage of how the Legacy/mainstream media and the Left used those techniques for propaganda during Trump's first term. A reminder, Donald Trump had to remove David Lebryk, a career Treasury Department official because he refused to follow on the pause of foreign aid. He continued to push payments out the door to the tune of billions before being removed. As to the open border, new information confirms DHS, the Biden Regime and USAID funded the entire flood of illegals into our country. It wasn't by accident. Next, we go through both the Trump Executive Order putting a temporary pause on foreign aid and moving USAID under the State Department. While the Left is lying about USAID being “shut down,” the truth is, once again, Trump and his team showing us how well they thought this through. Not only is everything Constitutional, it's so well-timed so as to force Congress to reassess the budget themselves during the pause. Oh, a reminder, for those worried about Elon Musk having access to private information. The Treasury payment system was being run by a Nigerian migrant who, in December of 2024, was in place with the Chinese hacked into the Treasury. Today is the birthday of Ronald Wilson Reagan. In honor of that, we bring you a quote from him about government taxes and government spending. We then close with a short video produced by the White House, outlining the accomplishments of Trump's first two weeks in office. Author Mike Curato wrote Flamer as a way to help young queer kids, like he once was, better understand and accept themselves. It was met with immediate praise and accolades — until it wasn't. When the book got caught up in a wave of Texas-based book bans, suddenly the narrative changed. And like so many books that address queer identity, Flamer quickly became a flashpoint in a long, messy culture war that tried to distort the nature of the book.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
