In this episode, Dani Filth, the iconic frontman of Cradle of Filth, opens up about the creation of their 2004 fan-favorite single, "Nymphetamine Fix." He discusses the atmospheric recording sessions with producer Rob Caggiano, which captured the band's signature dark and gothic sound. Dani also explores the song's lyrical themes of yearning and loss, reflecting on its portrayal of a destructive relationship akin to a drug addiction. Additionally, he touches upon the collaboration with guest vocalist Liv Kristine, whose ethereal vocals added a haunting contrast to the track. This episode offers listeners an intimate glimpse into the creative process behind one of Cradle of Filth's most beloved songs.

A review of the debut album from North American symphonic metal act Everdawn entitled ‘Cleopatra'. Everdawn isn't an entirely new band, but a reconstituted version of a previous act Midnight Eternal. The musician you're most likely to recognize from Everdawn – and a key additional in the changed lineup from Midnight Eternal – is bassist Mike LePond who many might know from Symphony X, also Ross The Boss band, Death Dealer, and many other projects. He brings a steady, veteran presence to this new incarnation of the band. Another fresh face in the lineup is vocalist Alina Gavrilenko, who also goes by the moniker Alina Snowmaiden, taking the vocal duties in place of Midnight Eternal singer Raine Hilai. To my ears, and one of the big differences with this new Everdawn release for those who heard Midnight Eternal's album, is that Raine's voice was a bit more Liv Kristine-esque, while Alina's vocals bring a bit less sweetness and more muscle. Now, in terms of what Everdawn offers on ‘Cleopatra', the listener can expect fairly straightforward European-style symphonic power metal. There's more emphasis on the power here than the symphonic style, and you won't find any massive backing orchestrations along the lines of Xandria or Sirenia. As far as the singing, its mostly operatic soprano female vocals occasionally bonded with clean male singing. No growls in this one. Listening through this album about a half dozen times, I come away generally impressed. There is something different and interesting in each song. While they don't get very progressive stylistically – mostly adherering to clear verse-chorus structure – they still mix it up and surprise on occasion. I'll say I found the second half of the album was somewhat stronger than the first. Looking at that first half: the rocking, up tempo intro “Ghost Shadow Requium” was decent but let off the gas too much and might have been better placed mid-track list. Both the title track “Cleopatra” and “Your Majesty Sadness” had the band going for a big sound. I do give points for effort here, and truly did enjoy both songs – but I'm not sure they quite nailed it with the choruses on each being a bit of a let down. “Stranded In Baglore” – which I believe is the first single released off the album, is a decent, catchy track. I could see this being one I'd enjoy more live than on record. But as I moved further into the album I found more to appreciate, or maybe their approach just grew on me. “Infinity Divine” has maybe the best vocal melody on the record building to a great crecendo – echos of Tarja Turunan – really excellently done. “Rider Of The Storm” and “Lucid Dream” both show the guitars attacking with even heavier riffage and more solid operatic highs from Alina, plus some nice keyboard work. The song “Heart Of A Lion” is the most anthemic track and could be right off a Leaves' Eyes album. And then there's Toledo 712 AD, which is entirely instrumental! Easily the heaviest song and a sterling headbanger. Looking back over the entire tracklist I'm not knocking the earlier album songs, but those later on the agenda seem to come with an overall more ‘metal' feel. The party really develops the further you listen in to this one. So, how do I rate this album ‘Cleopatra'. Well, as far as debuts go, this is pretty strong; give em three points for that. Delivering solid symphonic power metal based out of North America – where the genre needs more representation - earns them five more points. The first half of the album wasn't as strong as it could've been – minus a point, but the second half more than made up for it – plus two points. Total it up and that's 9 out of ten for Cleopatra. It's early so far, but so far ‘Cleopatra' is my fav album of 2021! Listening to this release really I'm very much looking forward to hearing more from the Everdawn and perhaps the opportunity to see them live in the future.

The MHOD reviews the latest album from Leaves' Eyes, Sign of the Dragonhead! Leaves' Eyes is a German-Norwegian symphonic metal band from Stavanger, Norway and Ludwigsburg, Germany. They were formed in 2003 by Liv Kristine, the former lead singer of Theatre of Tragedy and the entire line-up of Atrocity. To date, the band has released six studio albums, a single, six EPs, one live album and a DVD. Most of Leaves' Eyes' lyrics, written by Liv Kristine, concern Norse mythology and the Viking Age. The melodic singing vocals of Liv Kristine are occasionally backed up by death growled vocals from Krull, identified under the vocal style Kristine refers to as "beauty and the beast". On April 15, 2016, the band announced they had parted ways with lead-vocalist and co-founder Liv Kristine. They also revealed that she would be replaced by the Finnish singer Elina Siirala of EnkElination. Since then both parties have given different accounts about how the split happened with the band stating a decision on Kristine's departure was taken in January. While it was stated this had been a mutual decision, Kristine disputed this and indicated she was dismissed and it was not her decision. Legal proceedings have started. On April 18, 2017 Siirala made her debut with the band at the Hammersonic festival in Jakarta. It was also announced that a tour edition of the album King of Kings is set to appear in June.
The warrior longboats are coming back ashore with Leaves' Eyes 7th full-length studio album, "Sign Of The Dragonhead." Produced through Germany's Mastersound Entertainment by Leaves' Eyes' own Alex Krull and Thorsten Bauer, this is the band's first full release featuring new singer Elina Siirala. Fans got a taste of her work via the 2016 EP Fires In The North, but this album gives a much fuller sampling of her skills and a better sense of what fans can expect from this new incarnation of Leaves' Eyes. In brief: if you are an admirer of Leaves' Eyes previous catalogue, you'll relish "Sign Of The Dragonhead." The album picks up musically where 2015's “King Of Kings” left off, with a similar production style and lyrical themes. The mixture of styles and pacing from track to track makes this an eminently listenable album, with haunting ballads such as “Fairer Than The Sun” seguing seamlessly into headbanging anthems like “Shadows In The Night." Clocking in at just over 45 minutes, it's a balanced and well-conceived album from beginning to end. As a big fan of symphonic metal, I am aware of the potential pitfalls this genre holds. Bands who are able to avoid recreating Nightwish's sound still can move so far into melodic territory that the music becomes indistinguishable from commercial hard rock. No worries here on either front. With their new album, Leaves' Eyes maintains their own distinct sound, navigating the treacherous shoals of “beauty vs. beast” vocals, folkish elements, Viking lyrical imagery, and big orchestrations. The band utilizes all these tools effectively, in ways that never come off as derivative. Vocalist Elina Siirala's singing is quite impressive throughout "Sign Of The Dragonhead," her voice expressed with variety and heart. Elina's delivery is distinct from predecessor Liv Kristine, but not so much that fans will see her addition as a radical retooling of the band's sound. Her voice gives extra punch to the Celtic-inspired pace of standout tracks “Across The Sea” and “Völva." As usual with Leaves' Eyes, Alex Krull's harsh vocals are used judiciously and in just the right places to give extra aggression and “oomph." Like previous Leaves' Eyes releases, folk sounds play a key role, but the band wisely meters them out, with fiddles, pipes, choirs and acoustic guitar nurturing rather than overwhelming the songs on which they appear. “Riders On The Wind” is a great example of this balance, providing the perfect meshing of sonic metal and folk kick. Krull and Bauer did an impressive job in producing this album: the mix is clean and lively, making the music that much more exciting. This is a solid metal album, and one I won't forget when considering the best for 2018 at the end of the year. This album is very consistent, and the only negative I might mention is that there's not any single track that leaps out as a ‘must-hear' classic like the songs “My Destiny” or “Hell To The Heavens” from previous albums. However, with zero filler – no weak submissions here – and so much good material, Leaves' Eyes will have a tough time determining which songs will represent this album on setlists. With "Sign of the Dragonhead," Leaves' Eyes further solidify their niche as one of the strongest symphonic metal bands going.
