Finishing up my breakdown of Andrew and Polly's Forever Young, it's clear the song hit on some major themes for me. Being able to adjust to the unexpected, whether physical or emotional, and keeping a song in my heart all the while, have been critical factors contributing to my state of health. But engaging life with a youthful sense of awe and wonder and joy is an absolute “must have” as I travel along my personal path of wellness.
I continue breaking down one of my favorite children's songs. There's a lot about truth packed into a few lines of lyrics and, though I perceive it very difficult for a child to learn to be truthful to themselves and others, we might as well start teaching it as young as possible. It's a shame, however, that long before most kids grow to be thoughtful and true they leave the encouraging lyrics of kids music behind and we hope they continue to follow a parent's guidance and become the best they can be.

Lyrics: Verse 1 (sung at the beginning) On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain Refrain: So I'll cherish the old rugged cross Till my trophies at last I lay down I will cling to the old rugged cross And exchange it someday for a crown Verse 2 (sung at the end) Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left his glory above To bear it to dark Calvary [Refrain] Verse 3 In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died To pardon and sanctify me. [Refrain] Verse 4 To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then he'll call me someday to my home far away, Where his glory forever I'll share. Lyrics: Verse 1 (sung at the beginning) My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. Verse 2 (sung at the end) When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in ev'ry high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain] Verse 3 His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. Lyrics: Verse 1 (sung at the beginning) O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands have made I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow'r throughout the universe displayed Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art, how great art! Verse 2 (sung at the end) When through the woods And forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down From lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; [Refrain] And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin; [Refrain] When Christ shall come With shout of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, “My God, how great thou art.” [Refrain] Much of the information from this episode is drawn from Then Sings My Soul: 150 of the World's Greatest Hymn Stories, along with some of the finest information Google could furnish. Lyrics: Verse 1 (sung at the beginning) To God be the glory, great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life gate that all may go in. Refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son, and give him the glory, great things he has done! Verse 2: (sung at the end) O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood! To ev'ry believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives. Lyrics: Verse 1 (sung at the beginning) When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, "It is well, it is well with my soul." Refrain: It is well with my soul; it is well, it is well with my soul. Verse 2: (sung at the end) My sin oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! my sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more; praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! [Refrain] Verse 3: And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trumpet shall sound and the Lord shall descend; even so, it is well with my soul. Lyrics: Verse 1: (sung at the beginning) Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne. Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee, and hail him as thy matchless king through all eternity. Verse 2: (sung at the end) Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o'er the grave, who rose victorious to the strife for those he came to save; his glories now we sing who died and reigns on high, he died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. Verse 3: Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side, rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified; no angels in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bend their wond'ring eyes at mysteries so bright. Verse 4: Crown him the Lord of peace-- his Kingdom is at hand; from pole to pole let warfare cease and Christ rule ev'ry land! A city stands on high, his glories it displays, and there the nationals “Holy” cry in joyful hymns of praise. Verse 5: Crown him the Lord of years, the potentate of time, Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime. All hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou hast died for me; thy praise and glory shall not fail through all eternity. Amen. Music and audio editing by Mike Tetrault. Lyrics: Verse 1: (sung at the beginning) 'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take him at his word; just to rest upon his promise, and to know, "Thus saith the Lord." Refrain: Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I've proved him o'er and o'er! Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! Verse 2: (sung at the ending) O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust his cleansing blood; just in simple faith to plunge me ‘neath the healing, cleansing flood! [Refrain] Verse 3: Yes, 'tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease; just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace. Lyrics: Verse 1: (sung at beginning) When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Refrain: Trust and obey, for there's no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey. Verse 2: (sung at ending) Not a shadow can rise Not a cloud in the skies But his smile quickly drives it away Not a doubt nor a fear Not a sigh nor a tear Can abide while we trust and obey [Refrain] Verse 3: But we never can prove the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay; for the favor he shows, for the joy he bestows, are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain] Verse 4: Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we'll walk by his side in the way; what he says we will do, where he sends we will go; never fear, only trust and obey. In this episode, Pastor Joel and his friend Christopher Lord unpack the popular modern hymn, "In Christ Alone" written by Keith Getty / Stuart Townend. Lyrics:Verse 1:In Christ alone my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my songThis Cornerstone, this solid GroundFirm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peaceWhen fears are stilled, when strivings ceaseMy Comforter, my All in AllHere in the love of Christ I stand.Verse In Christ alone! - who took on flesh,Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness,Scorned by the ones He came to saveTill on that cross as Jesus died,The wrath of God was satisfiedFor every sin on Him was laidHere in the death of Christ I live.Verse 3There in the ground His body lay,Light of the world by darkness slain:Then bursting forth in glorious dayUp from the grave He rose againAnd as He stands in victorySin's curse has lost its grip on me,For I am His and He is mineBought with the precious blood of ChristVerse 4No guilt in life, no fear in death,This is the power of Christ in meFrom life's first cry to final breath,Jesus commands my destinyNo power of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from His handTill He returns or calls me homeHere in the power of Christ I'll stand.Podcast Outro: Arrangement of "There is A Fountain" used with permission by Ryan Foglesong & Brian Steckler of ENFIELD

They'll get up and run some more. Chorus: Spin around once, spit on the ground! Spin around twice, spit on the ground! Spin around thrice, spit on the ground! You're in! Verse 2: Idiots run a 100K, on a path down by the bay, Do it in a half a day, and the next they run some more. Idiots running down the street, smiling at the folks they meet, Eating Oreos, oh, so sweet to help them run some more. Bridge: Smile. Drink water. Don't die. You're in! Verse 3: Idiots running in a skirt, wear high heels, oh, my they hurt! If they stumble, they'll rub some dirt and then they'll run some more. Idiots running on the trails, up and down and through the vales. Run too far lose five toenails, before they run some more. Verse 4: Idiots running in a funk, getting hit by an angry skunk! They smelled real bad and you'd have thunk that they'd not run some more. Idiots running on and on, past midnight and on till dawn. Lacking sleep, they start to yawn, and still they run some more. ©2013 Mike Neifert

Kory wrote this song in 2014 but decided to include a recent recording on the Sword of the Spirit Podcast page! This is a song that is transparent about very real struggles, but also recognizes that any and all victory--in times peace or of war--belongs to God alone. LYRICS: Verse 1: Lord, I can't go on without You; This war is one I cannot win. In the chaos, I will seek You, For You calm the storm within. Pre-Chorus 1: Though my heart breaks within me, Let my praises rise to Thee. Chorus: I'll fix my eyes on the One Who gave His one and only Son. In times of peace or of war, God, the victory is Yours. Verse 2: Lord, my feet give way beneath me; I've fought this battle for so long. Though it may never be easy, You are here to lead me on and on. Pre-Chorus 2: Though my mind is far from pure, Make it clean and make me Yours.
"All Glory to God" is a worship song written by Kory Labarga. One of the goals in writing the song was to juxtapose our pre-Christian lives (sung in the verses, which are full of minors and a somber tone) with our new lives in Christ (sung in the more upbeat pre-choruses, choruses, and bridge). We sincerely hope this song blesses people! Lyrics: Verse 1: Our lives were vapid and blind, veiled by deepest night-- Each step a wandering guess when we couldn’t see the light. Distressed and never content, how could we not know our need? In war, rebellion and scorn, we battled the God of peace. Pre-Chorus: But You gave Your Son to save us, And in Him the day is won. Chorus: All glory to God, Who in love draws us near, Overflowing with grace And forever here. Abounding in mercy, You chose to atone; Now we sing with the heavens To You alone. Verse 2: Our hearts were stony and scarred; we knew not the God of grace. Our minds believed Satan’s lies, and we could not seek Your face. Pre-Chorus 2: Our hearts have changed forever, And in joy we follow You. Bridge: You've given us eyes, and we see, New hearts to believe. By Your love, You have saved us; By grace, we're redeemed. Now forever we'll praise The God of all days. We delight in the One Who saves.
