Feb. 7, 2024, marks the 28th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a global movement that aims to inspire and encourage young girls and women around the world to get active, play sports and break boundaries. But the barriers are real. There are societal prejudices and fewer opportunities for girls to get into sports—and even more stereotypes about Jews as un-athletic, giving young Jewish girls twice as many hurdles to overcome. Chelsey Goldberg knows those hurdles firsthand. Growing up in California, her only option to play hockey was to play in a local boys' league, eventually rising the ranks of women's hockey to play professionally in Canada and the United States. She spent years lobbying the Maccabiah Games to create a women's hockey division—a fight she won in 2022, when she became the captain for Team USA at the Maccabiah, winning silver. Goldberg joins Menschwarmers co-host James for a frank talk about the value of sports for women and girls and what the future looks like. Plus, Gabe and James take a deep dive into the keffiyeh controversy that overtook the recent NHL All-Star Game in Toronto, in which the singer of the national anthem wore a piece of clothing that vaguely resembled a keffiyeh. And we respond to a few listeners to wrote in after our last episode about Jewish NHL players. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. Our intro music is by Coby Lipovitch, and our outro music is "Organ Grinder Swing" by chēēZ π. This show is a member of The CJN Podcast Network. One of the lesser-known consequences of the horrific Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, has been the shutdown of normal life for Israelis living in northern Israel: hundreds of families who live near the border with Lebanon had to be evacuated from their homes to escape the barrage of rockets fired by Hezbollah forces, which continues to this day. And that has meant the suspension of hockey games and practise for the small coterie of Israeli players in the country's hockey program housed at the Canadian-founded arena in Metulla. But thanks to Canadian supporters of the Israeli hockey program, the Vancouver and Winnipeg Jewish communities, and Maccabi Canada, twenty hockey players between the ages of 12-18 got a break from the tension and anxiety of living through the war, with an all-expenses-paid two week trip to Canada. One group visited Vancouver, while another visited Winnipeg-where they got to practise at the Winnipeg Jets' training arena, meet with Indigenous elders and the local Jewish day school, and even throw some strikes at a local bowling alley. Last month, the teens travelled to Toronto to end their trip, with the requisite stop at the CN Tower and a visit to what some might consider the shrine to the game of hockey: The Hockey Hall of Fame. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, producer Zachary Kauffman speaks to Liv Sharabi, 18, who plays defence for the Israel Women's National Team; Maksim Dashanov, also 18, who played defence on Israel's gold-medal winning U18 Men's National hockey team at the 2023 World Championships in Iceland, and to chaperone Melissa Wronzberg, a veteran Canadian women's hockey player. What we talked about: Learn more about Mike Levin and the Israeli U20 Men's national hockey team's quest for gold at the IIHF World Championships in Bulgaria last weekend, in The CJN. Read why Israel's U20 men's hockey team nearly didn't play the 2024 IIHF tournament for Division lll, in The CJN. Hear player Melissa Wronzberg on The CJN's Menschwarmers podcast on why women's hockey had a moment during the 2022 Maccabiah games in Israel. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Religions and Diaspora Affairs correspondent Judah Ari Gross and news editor Amy Spiro join host Anne Gordon, in for Amanda Borschel-Dan, on today's episode. Gross updates us on reactions to the Western Wall conflict regarding the harassment of several bar and bat mitzvah celebrations a few weeks ago. Where the State of Israel has been lukewarm in its response, the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency is seeking a hard line against the disruptive conduct. Gross also sets the scene for the 21st Maccabiah Games, which are now going on in Israel. These so-called Jewish Olympics are a kind of ingathering of the exiles, bringing Jewish athletes from all over the world to compete. But will they drum up support on the local front? Sticking with the sports theme, Spiro elaborates on the most recent woes of the Beitar Jerusalem soccer club, from the team's need for a budget to the furious fans who fear their team will be disbanded. She also explains why Israel has already chosen its Eurovision 2023 contestant. But will pop star Noa Kirel go the distance to compete? Discussed articles include: Jewish Agency demands boosted security at Western Wall after ‘despicable' protest Rainbow of flags as largest-ever Maccabiah kicks off in Jerusalem with Biden on hand Paying the penalties: The stranger-than-fiction rise and fall of Beitar Jerusalem Chart-topper Noa Kirel chosen to represent Israel at Eurovision 2023 Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. United States correspondent Jacob Magid and health reporter Nathan Jeffay join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. United State President Joe Biden is in Israel through Friday. Magid speaks to us about some last-minute housekeeping Israel has been doing to reduce potential friction. One of the stops on Biden's itinerary is a rare evening appearance for the opening ceremonies of the Maccabiah games. Some 10,000 Jewish athletes and support staff have arrived in the Holy Land to participate in a variety of sporting events over the next three weeks. What's Biden's role here? Unquestionably, the question on everyone's mind is whether the trip will result in an expansion of the Abraham Accords to Saudi Arabia. Is this just media hype, or a realistic achievement? Jeffay updates us on a major study that shows that fourth COVID-19 vaccine shots have provided a 72 percent reduction in death rates among the most vulnerable Israelis. In light of a successful vaccination campaign for polio boosters over the past few months, the Health Ministry said it would stop administering the vaccine to children over the age of six. Jeffay explains this change of heart. Jeffay reports on Diindolylmethane (DIM), a chemical found in broccoli and cauliflower, that could be used to speed up the healing of skin wounds. And finally, in a promising super preliminary study, scientists measure if coma patients are processing relatives' voices and other sounds around them. Discussed articles include: Ahead of Biden visit, Israel delays hearing on construction in East Jerusalem Major Israeli study: COVID death rate among elderly slashed by 72% after 4th vaccine Health Ministry touts 99% polio vaccination rate among babies Israeli study: Chemical heals wounds twice as fast, could be antibiotic alternative Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Editor David Horovitz and environment reporter Sue Surkes join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode. United States President Joe Biden is set to arrive in Israel this week. Let's hear what Horovitz sees as the goals and potential outcomes of the trip. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced he would resign late last week. How could this power shift affect the UK's relationship with Israel? The annual state of nature report that came out on Thursday has concluded that Israeli nature loses an equivalent of a medium-sized city to development every year. What else did the report find? Israel is set to be 1st in the world to pipe desalinated water into a freshwater lake -- the Sea of Galilee. We learn why this may, or may not, be a boon to nature. A doctoral student at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in southern Israel is using fungi to create insulation for the construction industry. Another brick in the wall of sustainable development? Discussed articles include: Biden: Upcoming flight from Israel to Saudi Arabia a ‘small symbol' of warming ties Iron Dome, Yad Vashem, Maccabiah, Bethlehem: Biden's 2 days in Israel and West Bank Who could replace Boris Johnson as UK's next prime minister? Belfast, a broken menorah, listening to survivors: Johnson's notable Jewish moments Israeli nature loses equivalent of a medium-sized city to development every year Israel to be 1st in world to pipe desalinated water into a natural lake, the Galilee Student harnesses fungi to create sustainable building material Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts.
