41-year-old IM Renier Castellanos had all but given up on earning the Grandmaster title. His life was getting busier, and after 2 potential GM norms were not ratified by FIDE, he felt like it just wasn't meant to be. But his friends and Killer Chess Training co-workers, GM Jacob Aagaard and Kallia Kleisarchaki convinced him to keep trying. In turned out that was all it took! Two weeks ago, Renier got his final GM norm, to earn the title of Grandmaster at age 41. In our interview, Renier reflects on the lessons he has learned, and why he thinks he was still able to earn the title in this challenging era despite not working on chess as much as he did in his 20s. Renier also shares his own advice on chess improvement, some book recommendations, and discusses what he observed from facing Super GM level players like GM Vladimir Fedoseev. In this interview about grit and determination, author and former professional basketball player Dan Grunfeld tells the harrowing story of how his grandmother escaped the Holocaust during World War II. Dan goes on to describe the challenges his grandmother, grandfather, uncle, and father faced as they moved to the United States to begin a new life for themselves after the war. Unable to speak English, Dan's father, Ernie Grunfeld, used the resilience he inherited from his parents to turn himself into a high school basketball phenom who went on to become a collegiate All-American, Olympic Gold Medal winner for Team USA in 1976, and an NBA player and executive.Dan describes his personal duty to honor his grandmother, father, and their family legacy by honing his skills, body, and mind so he could be the best athlete and person he can be. He wraps up the conversation by describing his own path to becoming a standout college basketball player and his unrelenting willingness to overcome a brutal knee injury that nearly ended his chances at a professional basketball career. Dan Grunfeld is a former professional basketball player, an accomplished writer, and a proud graduate of Stanford University. An Academic All-American and All-Conference basketball selection at Stanford, Dan played professionally for eight seasons in top leagues around the world, including in Germany, Spain, and Israel. Dan is the author of the critically acclaimed book, By the Grace of the Game, and his writing has been published more than 40 times in media outlets such as Sports Illustrated, The Jerusalem Post, and NBC News. Dan earned his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2017 and lives with his wife and sons in Northern Virginia, where he works in venture capital.

Author and former professional basketball player Dan Grunfeld joins me in The Locher Room for the 16th episode in the Conversations with Alan series.Dan will be here to share the story of his father, former Milwaukee Bucks player and general manager Ernie Grunfeld who is the only athlete in NBA history whose parents survived the Holocaust. As a longtime figure in the public eye, audiences knew very little about his background. His son, Dan, in his book By the Grace of the Game, details what the Grunfeld family had to endure during the Holocaust, how basketball transformed Ernie from immigrant outcast to an Olympic gold medalist for the United States.By the Grace of the Game is a story of an ordinary family thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Surviving the horrors of the Holocaust, deceiving a brutal communist regime, and adapting to life as illiterate refugees caring for a dying son in New York City are only the beginning. The true improbability of this family story lies in the discovery of a game – the game of basketball – that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie together generations of a fractured family. If the magnitude of an American dream is measured by the intensity of the nightmare that came before and the heights of the triumph achieved after, then By the Grace of the Game recounts an American dream story of unprecedented scale. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden, from yellow stars to silver spoons, this striking family saga traverses the vast spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations, carried on the shoulders of a simple and beautiful game, a vehicle no one could have predicted. With antisemitism and attacks on Jewish people on the rise, please join us for another important conversation.Original Airdate: 10/26/2022

In this episode of Politely Pushy, he talks about Web3 and what it means for our money. According to Simon, Web3 is the “digital version of sticking it in the vault” (or under your mattress, in the cookie jar, behind a loose brick in the wall), by allowing us to be our own bank. And FedNow? He could do a whole episode on that. If you want to learn more, check out what Simon says here.

The first shiur of this year's "Machshavah Lab" series for women was a unique one, in which I attempted to convey the biggest insight from my philosophical-anthropological journey to the Crow Reservation in Montana in August 2022. The crux of this insight derived from two sources: (1) my conversation with a Crow Elder, and (2) a commentary from Rav Hirsch, supplemented by ideas from the Sefer ha'Chinuch and R' Yochai Makbili. Although today's shiur deviates from my usual style (i.e. collaborative analysis of a text), I hope you find that this idea enhances your appreciation of Torah, as it did mine.----------מקורות:רש"ר הירש - ויקרא יט:כזדברים יב:א-המכות פרק ג משנה טזספר החינוך מצוה טזDr. Dayan I. Peter, of course, is an accomplished Grandmaster and a renowned opening theoretician who has worked as a trainer for 8 World Championship match winners, first with GM Viswanathan Anand, and in recent years with GM Magnus Carlsen. For this podcast, Peter takes us behind team Anand's mindset and preparation, as they helped Vishy prepare to defend his title against GM Boris Gelfand in May of 2012. This continues a series, as Peter discussed Anand's 2010 match with GM Veselin Topalov in Episode 177. For a chess history enthusiast like myself it is such a treat to get a blow by blow account of a World Championship match from someone who had a prominent role in the match and a ringside seat. Please read on for timestamps, links to topics referenced can be found on the podcast webpage.  You can review any of the games from the match discussed here:  https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1025310 03:30- Since we are discussing events of 10 years ago, I thought we should ask: Does Peter think that he has a good memory?  11:00- We begin by discussing the 2012 pre match training camp, in Bad Soden, Germany in January of 2012. Peter convened with Anand and fellow team members, GMs Radoslaw Wotjasek, Surya Ganguly, and GM Rustam Kasimzdhanov.  21:00- How did the team feel about Gelfand as an opponent for Vishy?  32:30- Perpetual Chess is brought to you in part by Chessable.com. When Dan Grunfeld's grandmother was a teenager, “Life was nothing more than a loving family, a tall tree, and an endless supply of sweet, juicy cherries.” But in an instant, the Nazis overran Europe and murdered her parents and five siblings in the Holocaust. Somehow Anyu and a sister survived the liquidation of the Budapest ghetto and after she married another Holocaust survivor, they escaped the Communist rule that dominated Eastern Europe after the war and emigrated to New York City. Dan's father, Ernie, was bullied because he couldn't speak English and lost his beloved older brother to leukemia. But before his brother passed, he predicted that Ernie would overcome all his obstacles and become great.Basketball gave him the chance to fulfill this prophecy, and as his parents worked long hours in their fabric store, Ernie honed his game, earning a scholarship to the University of Tennessee. There he formed a dynamic partnership with Bernard King, and “Ernie and Bernie” rode roughshod over their SEC competitors. Soon, the little boy who was picked on was a strong man standing atop the Olympic podium with a gold medal around his neck, then an NBA champion, and later the GM of the Knicks and Wizards. His son Dan followed in his footsteps, starring at Stanford and playing pro ball in Europe for eight years. All the while, Anyu was the family's rock, as Dan shares in his moving family history By the Grace of the Game. In this episode, Dan reveals: How his grandmother survived the Holocaust with the help of an unsung heroWhat it was like for a family to leave everything they knew to come to New YorkWhy he keeps a spoon beside his bed as a potent symbol of the human will to endureHow basketball gave his father a chance to transform an immigrant family's story What the game and his family story have taught him about hard work, perseverance, forgiveness, and hope The time a young Carmelo Anthony blocked his shot into the stands during his first practice at ABCD CampHow Jamal Crawford was asking him for help on how to be better in Mike D'Antoni's offense with the New York KnicksTo hear the rest of Dan's profound story, read By The Grace of the Game, and connect with him on his website and via Twitter.

When Lily and Alex entered a packed gymnasium in Queens, New York in 1972, they barely recognized their son. The boy who escaped to America with them, who was bullied as he struggled to learn English and cope with family tragedy, was now a young man who had discovered and secretly honed his basketball talent on the outdoor courts of New York City. That young man was Ernie Grunfeld, who would go on to win an Olympic gold medal and reach previously unimaginable heights as an NBA player and executive. In By the Grace of the Game: The Holocaust, a Basketball Legacy, and an Unprecedented American Dream (Triumph Books, 2022), Dan Grunfeld, once a basketball standout himself at Stanford University, shares the remarkable story of his family, a delicately interwoven narrative that doesn't lack in heartbreak yet remains as deeply nourishing as his grandmother's Hungarian cooking, so lovingly described. The true improbability of the saga lies in the discovery of a game that unknowingly held the power to heal wounds, build bridges, and tie together a fractured Jewish family. If the magnitude of an American dream is measured by the intensity of the nightmare that came before and the heights of the triumph achieved after, then By the Grace of the Game recounts an American dream story of unprecedented scale. From the grips of the Nazis to the top of the Olympic podium, from the cheap seats to center stage at Madison Square Garden, from yellow stars to silver spoons, this complex tale traverses the spectrum of the human experience to detail how perseverance, love, and legacy can survive through generations, carried on the shoulders of a simple and beautiful game. The guys follow up on the NBA Social Coalition Initiative. We had James Cadogan on last summer and he mentioned the many things the Coalition had lined up. The Coalition now has a Change the Law, Change the World social media presence. Marcus Freeman taking over at Notre Dame is an amazing thing. Notre Dame did something good for the players. Marcus Freeman was given the job for no other reason other than he deserves and earned it. Congratulations to Deion Sanders and the Jackson State Tigers for winning the SWAC Championship. The guys discuss the chances of Prime leaving for a bigger program.Dan Grunfeld, Former NBA Player; Author, 'By The Grace of the Game'This book is a detailed story about the Grunfeld family, what they went through and the role basketball played. This story has always been within Dan. His grandmother who is still alive lost many family and friends during the Holocaust. His grandfather lost everyone. When Dan was young, he knew something happened within his family but didn't exactly know what. His grandmother told the stories as he got older and matured. His grandparents were Holocaust survivors who came to America and were always working. They encouraged Dan's father, Ernie to play basketball. Many people have shared stories with Dan about his family over the years. His grandparents closed their store for two weeks to see Ernie win gold in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. After surviving the holocaust, the family then had to survive Communist rule before coming to America.

Abel Grunfeld, Head of Growth at Riverside, joins host Jake Jorgovan today. Riverside is a startup that helps creators like podcasters achieve their ‘why' through user-friendly technology. The platform offers several advantages such as better audio and video capture quality, instant upload to the cloud to prevent loss of the material, and great editing tools. Grunfeld shares that this great UX was accomplished through their product strategy approach. They patterned the product with their target user base in mind. Seeing a lot of creators using video conferencing tools like Zoom to record podcasts was an indicator that the market needed Riverside. So the product was built exactly to that specification, on both the front end and the back end.Grunfeld talks about continuing the product roadmap of providing the right user experience for their creator customers. Improving the editing process and the core flow for creators is a key feature they are working on, which will allow creators to save a lot of time. Riverside equates this time savings as a competitive advantage that would make their platform a preferred one for their target ICP.Grunfeld believes the biggest driver for their growth is the product. The product, initially used for political debates, has iterated and improved. He stresses the importance of listening to your users, their pain points, and putting yourself in their shoes. Once these align, you will have a valuable product to share with them. Are you a business leader seeking to crack the strategy of aligning your product to customer needs? Then this episode is the right one for you.Resources:Website - Riverside.fmTwitter - Riverside.fmTwitter - AbelGrunfeldLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/abelgrunfeld/This episode is brought to you by Content Allies.Content Allies helps B2B tech companies launch revenue-generating podcasts.
