When you’re in the middle of a pandemic and make the decision to open your schools to full-time in-person learning, it’s good to know you have health experts on the payroll. South Jersey Catholic Schools have some of the most well-trained nurses working in them today. Our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh talk to three - Shayna Benson from Saint Margaret Regional School; Cele McEvoy Walter from Paul VI High School; and Mary Beth Abate from Assumption Regional Catholic School - about how they helped the schools reopen, worked with parents, and cared for both students and staff as they lived through the pandemic. We had a great conversation about how these healthcare professionals stay on top of the medical news and keep people cared for, this year and every year. On this week’s episode Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh welcome two distinguished guests to talk Catholic Schools and schools choice, Superintendent of the Office of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Camden, Dr. Bill Watson, and John Schoenig the Senior Director of Teacher Formation and Education Policy for the University of Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). In this role, he leads the ACE Teaching Fellows Program - the largest provider of Catholic school teaching talent in the United States - and its Program for Educational Access (PEA), an advocacy and leadership formation enterprise that helps develop and implement policy that expands financial access to faith-based schools. In addition, he serves as a faculty member and Fellow of Notre Dame's Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI). As Catholic Schools Week begins across the nation, the quartet discuss the uniqueness of this ministry and why school choice programs are vital for many families and why states should be encouraged to provide more resources so students have more options beyond their local public school. Dr. William Watson and Dr. Robert Lockwood chat with our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh about the common questions Catholic Schools are getting regarding in-person and remote instruction this year. Dr. Watson explain how South Jersey Catholic Schools are thriving even under the pressures caused by a pandemic that seem to have come from nowhere. It certainly has pushed Catholic school leaders and teachers to think outside of the box to be able to teach remotely and in person, simultaneously. Dr. Lockwood, who is the new addition to the Catholic schools office, has been working hard to make sure teachers feel prepared and well equipped to maintain the quality of instruction that characterizes our Catholic Schools and gives an update on standardized testing this year. Marianela Nunez also has some professionally joyful news to share with our listeners at the end of the show! It’s our 200th episode! Traditionally, we prefer to do live shows in front of an audience when we hit a new centennial mark, however this year we had to put a halt to that to comply with pandemic guidelines. So instead, we decided to record a Zoom episode with all of our hosts and a few of our favorite guests from the past year. (Not only are we celebrating 200 episodes but we’re also celebrating a belated one year anniversary to our three co-hosts who started on the show on October 9, 2019). On this week’s podcast, our quartet of hosts - Mike Walsh, Mary McCusker, Kari Janisse, Marianela Nunez - welcomed onto the show: Kevin Hickey, Executive Director, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden Donna Ottaviano-Britt, Director, Office of Discipleship & Leadership, Diocese of Camden Fr. Peter Gallagher, Pontifical North American College Fr. Joshua Nevitt, Director of Catholic Identity, Holy Spirit High School Mary Beth Peabody, Communications Manager, Office of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Camden The nine discussed the evolution of the Talking Catholic show and its expansion into the YouTube universe with several other shows. We also chatted about how all of our guests have transitioned into the on-line universe with great success, as they had to move from in-person to virtual events and communications this year. It’s a great chat this week, very uplifting and provides a lot of tips for those who are looking to make a bigger splash in the on-line world. This episode is available in both the audio format (everyplace podcasts can be accessed, and in our regular time slots on Domestic Church Radio) but also as a video podcast at youtube.com/talkingcatholic. Joining us this week is acclaimed Catholic speaker, author and academic Dr. Hosffman Ospino, Associate Professor of Hispanic Ministry and Religious Education, as well as chair of the Department of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Boston College. Dr. Ospino’s research explores the dialogue between faith and culture and the impact of this interchange upon Catholic theological education, catechesis, and ministry. He has served as the principal investigator for several nationally recognized studies on how the Hispanic Catholic presence is transforming parishes, schools and organizations. Dr. Ospino was also a keynote speaker at the Diocese of Camden’s Convocation of Catholic Leaders in 2018, which is why we asked that event’s executive director, Donna Ottaviano-Britt, on to the show to talk about some of the ways the Convocation has led to the percolating of new ideas in our parishes. The duo give our hosts, Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh, and our listeners a lot of great information that should provide a roadmap into the future for our parishes. At the beginning of September, Catholic Schools in South Jersey reopened for five-day a week in person learning, with a virtual option for families who decided to utilize it. To give us an update and insight into how the new school year is moving along, our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh welcome Patti Paulson from Holy Angels Regional School in Woodbury, NJ; Joe Cray from Wildwood Catholic Academy, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bill Watson and Marketing Coordinator Mary Beth Peabody from the Office of Catholic Schools. The foursome offer a great deal of detail as to how the schools have reopened, their successes, their challenges, and how the Catholic School dynamic is uniquely positioned to offer in-school learning during Covid times. For school parents across the country the questions they’ve been asking most are: 1) will schools reopen for in-class education and 2) if so, how will it be done safely? The answers to those very questions have been the primary focus of the Diocese of Camden’s Office of Catholic Schools all summer. Recently, they released a FAQ on the process (https://catholicstarherald.org/questions-and-answers-about-the-2020-21-school-year/) that schools have followed to make possible safe in-person education. To add more depth about the roadmap that South Jersey Catholic Schools are following, we welcome Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bill Watson and Communication and Marketing Manager Mary Beth Peabody to the show. Our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh pepper the duo with these questions and more on behalf of Catholic schools parents. It’s a great conversation that results in a lot of answers about logistics and procedures, as well as what research informed them. The end of the 2019/2020 school year was a new experience for everyone involved in education. After speaking with a few graduating seniors last month, we decided to chat with two teachers about their experience with emergency remote teaching. Joining us this week is Holy Spirit High School religion teacher John Clement and Saint John Paul II Regional School first grade teacher Patricia Babnew. Our hosts Marianela Nunez and Mike Walsh were all ears as the two teachers explained the incredible paradigm shift that took place in South Jersey Catholic Schools in a very short period of time. It was no small endeavor moving from in-person education to remote learning, but across the Diocese of Camden, stories like these were seen at every school. It’s been a weird few months and we’ve been bringing you a lot of heavy topics. Mike Walsh needed a break so he called over to his house a rare podcast of all four of the Talking Catholics hosts. For the first time since before March, Mike, Mary McCusker, Kari Janisse and Marianela Nunez had a chance to chat without the use of a Zoom call - they sat six feet from each other on Mike’s patio furniture. It’s a low-key interview, just talking about what they’ve been up to since mid-March, how they’ve kept their spirits and spirituality up, and what they hope to see in the very near future. The event do a little Catholic trivia to wrap up the episode :) Listen to Talking Catholic on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, SoundCloud, Alexa or at https://talking.catholicstarherald.org/show/talking-catholic/ You can also catch us on Domestic Church Media radio Sundays at 11 AM or Mondays at 4 PM https://domesticchurchmedia.org. Like the rest of the world, our podcast isn’t immune to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. But, also like the rest of the world, we will soldier on in new and different ways. So this week, via Zoom teleconferencing software, Mike Walsh grabs a few of his favorite co-hosts and guests for long conversation about how they’re handling the required social distancing. Joining him this week are Talking Catholic YouTube Channel hosts Kari Janisse, Star Martinez, Donna Ottaviano-Britt and Lex Keefer, Compartiendo Tu Don YouTube Channel host Marianela Nunez, and Director of Parish Nursing for VITALIty Catholic Healthcare Services, Nicole Keefer, RN. And, since we have so many YouTubers on the show, we’re posting the full video of the interview on-line at https://www.youtube.com/TalkingCatholic [Producer Note: please excuse the sound quality of these kinds of teleconferencing interviews. This is one of our most emotional podcasts yet. Less than 24 hours before we recorded, our co-host Marianela Nunez and guest Marybeth Peabody, both from the South Jersey Catholic Schools office, were crossing the border back and forth from Texas to Mexico, bringing food and water to South and Central American refugees, as part of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden's’ 11th Share the Journey solidarity pilgrimage. Joined by co-host Mike Walsh and Catholic Charities' Mary McCusker, they discuss the first-hand encounters and experiences that they faced on their journey, which was informative, heartbreaking, uplifting, and everything in between. To learn more about the solidarity pilgrimages, go to - https://catholiccharitiescamden.org/stj/
With the Diocese of Camden's inaugural Soccer Cup taking place this Saturday, June 15 at Saint Augustine Prep in Richland, Mike and Pete discuss all things fútbol with three of the day’s organizers: Marianela Nunez, Field Director of Latino Enrollment in the diocesan Office of Catholic Schools; Claudia Trani-Melgar, Communications and Outreach Coordinator for Saint Clare of Assisi Parish, Swedesboro; and Jose Rodriguez, diocesan Coordinator for Youth, Young Adult, and Hispanic Ministries. As she celebrates 20 years dancing with the company, she takes Radio Four's Beaty Rubens behind the scenes, sharing what it means to be a Principal Dancer today. The programme focuses on her preparations to dance the two key roles in the much-loved classic, La Bayadere - the temple dancer Nikiya and the princess Gamzatti. It reveals glimpses of her at home in her native Buenos Aires over the summer, follows her as she travels into work, attends specially - designed Pilates classes and studio rehearsals with the great Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova (who recreated Marius Petipa's 1877 Indian Classic for a contemporary audience in 1989) and culminates with her triumphant opening night, leaving her in her dressing room with her feet in a bucket of ice and surrounded by vast bouquets of pink roses. Beaty Rubens also hears from Natalia Makarova, the Royal Ballet's Kevin O'Hare and the leading Russian dancer who partners Marianela, Vadim Muntagirov. Now at the very top of her game, Marinanela Nunez is also a wonderfully charismatic individual, whose love of dance and enthusiasm for life in the Royal Ballet effervesces in this lively depiction of a true artist. After 101 episodes, Mike missed his first episode (feel better, pal). Don't despair though, Pete got a co-host upgrade this week in the person of Marianela Nunez, Director of Latino Enrollment for the Office of Catholic Schools in the Diocese. The duo speak with friend of the show, Dr. Bill Watson, Director of Curriculum and Assessment for the schools office. They chat about the good work that’s happening in today’s South Jersey Catholic Schools, and the difference a Catholic school can make in youth’s lives - think of it as a pre-show for Catholic Schools Week at the end of this month. Pete and Bill also trade hot takes on the Phillies offseason and the upcoming Eagles playoff game and Marianela gushes about the new addition to her family during the holidays (hint: woof, woof!).
In the past 8 days, Bishop Dennis Sullivan and the Diocese of Camden have hosted two unprecedented meetings. One with 16 Dreamers facing an uncertain future as DACA remains in limbo and another with 40+ Catholic school student leaders in a poignant discussion about violence targeting schools around the nation, most recently in Parkland. In this podcast, Mike and Pete discuss how each meeting unfolded with people who were there to see it, Mr. Kevin Hickey from Catholic Charities, Camden; and Marianela Nunez and Mary Beth Peabody from the Diocese of Camden’s Office of Schools. As Catholic Schools Week kicks off this Sunday, we invited principal Molly Webb to join us as we chat all things education. She is in her second year leading Resurrection Catholic School in Cherry Hill, NJ. Also joining us is another educator and our pinch hitting co-host, filling in for an ailing Pete Sanchez, Marianela Nunez, Diocese of Camden Schools Office Field Consultant for Latino Enrollment. This duo of education experts join Mike to talk about how Catholic Schools provide a holistic learning experience for students, cultivate a joy-filled community for entire families, and give young people a leg-up as they become leaders in their communities.
With Christmas just a few days away, we sit down for a chat about the merry season with our friends from the Diocese of Camden’s Schools Office: Dr. Bill Watson, Marianela Nunez and Mary Beth Peabody. Mike, Pete and the crew discuss how schools and students are preparing for Christmas and reminisce about some of our favorite Christmastime memories.
We have another SPECIAL podcast this week, we are offering it in two languages! For our English listeners, Mike and Pete sit down with Andres Arango, Bishop's Delegate for Hispanic Ministry. For Spanish listeners, Marianela Nunez, Catholic Schools Office field consultant for the Latino enrollment program, takes the co-host chair and joins Pete and Andres for the interview. Both podcasts discuss this weekend's V Encuentro, which will bring together South Jersey Hispanics for day of reflection, faith sharing, and missionary discipleship. Both podcasts also touch on evangelization, Pope Francis, and what gifts Hispanics bring to the Catholic Church.
This week the absolutely delightful Marianela Nunez, Latino enrollment field consultant for South Jersey Catholic Schools, joins Pete and Mike to discuss growing up in the Dominican Republic, the differences between being a Catholic in the U.S. vs. Latin America – especially as it relates to schools, and why all Catholics should be taking part in V Encuentro activities.
