David Almond marks 25 years of his extraordinary book, Skellig, with a walk from Seahouses to Bamburgh in Northumberland. As he tells Clare, it's a landscape that has long inspired his imagination and writing. Skellig tells the tale of Michael, a young boy who befriends a magical creature - part owl, part angel – that needs Michael's help to survive. The book has won multiple awards, been adapted for stage, film, radio and opera and translated into 40 languages. As they walk, David tells Clare how his childhood in the north-east shaped both his character and writing, and discusses why walking is a necessary pleasure. The stretch of coastline they're exploring is rich with historical, religious and cultural significance and the entire region has provided inspiration for David's writing over the years. They met at Seahouses Harbour and walked through sun, rain and wind to the most dominant man-made feature in the area - Bamburgh Castle.Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen Gregor

The Smile is a trio comprising Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner. That Yorke and Greenwood are members of Radiohead assures keen interest the band. Nick Ahad talks to Jonny Greenwood about Wall of Eyes, The Smile's second album. After many years Greenwood still enjoys making music with Yorke, and drummer Tom Skinner adds to the excitement. The winner of this year's Artes Mundi prize, the UK's leading international contemporary art prize is Taloi Havinian, an artist from the Autonomous Region of Bougainvillle – an island nation in the South West Pacific. Havinian joins Front Row to discuss her work which has been described as a “visual composition of the experiences of Bougainvilleans with colonialism, mining, resistance, and land and water protection, from the 1960s to the present day.” Sexism and misogyny are rife in the music industry, a boys club where sexual harassment and abuse are common, according to a Government report. The musician Self Esteem has her say.A report from the rugged, mythical coast just outside of Newcastle, the location which inspired David Almond's A Song For Ella Grey, an award-winning novel being adapted for stage by Zoe Cooper and directed by Pilot Theatre's Esther Richardson.Presenter: Nick Ahad Producer: Ekene Akalawu
Pilot Theatre, a York-based touring company that creates theatre for young people is to tour England in February and March 2024 with an adaptation of David Almond's book A Song for Ella Grey, written by Zoe Cooper and directed by Pilot's Artistic Director, Esther Richardson. BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to Esther while the production was still in rehearsal about the play, its North East setting, having a TikTok star in the title role, the process of adapting a challenging novel for the stage and the current state of theatre for young people in the UK. A Song for Ella Grey will open at Northern Stage in Newcastle 1–15 February 2024, before moving to York Theatre Royal 20–24 February, Theatre Peckham 27 February to 2 March, Hull Truck Theatre 5–9 March, Liverpool Playhouse 13–16 March and Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford 19–23 March.
The Dry Heart by Natalia Ginzberg Ginzberg was an Italian writer who died in 1991 and in the past few years her books have been translated and reprinted and finding a whole new audience. The Dry Heart was first published in 1947 and is a very short novel about a women who shoots her husband. It's incredibly moving, and brutal but told with her astonishing style - very clear writing, minimal description, just movement and action. Dazzlehands by Sacha Cotter and Josh Morgan, Skellig by David Almond
This is the twelth episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. To wrap up season two we are bringing you the last two picture books set in the Moomin universe written by Tove Jansson. Both of these books are a bit difficult and inaccessible! They're very interesting to Moomin fans in that they show the later stages of Tove's journey with her little trolls, and how she felt about them towards the end of her life. The Dangerous Journey is a portal fantasy that sees human girl Susanna enter the Moomin world and travel through a series of gorgeously bleak watercolor landscapes. The Moomins are barely in this, and when they do appear, it's time for Susanna to go. We talk about the many influences on the art and writing of Jansson and read the book as a kind of retrospective of her life. Villain in the Moominhouse has no official translation into English and is kind of hard to find! You can read a fan translation by Teresa Ronayne here: https://kupdf.net/download/the-unwanted-guest-final-version-03-09-small_58d46345dc0d60893ec34667_pdf This is a more typical story shape for the Moomins, except it's all set inside the Moominhouse. Little My is awakened by a horrible smell - eventually the whole house is roused to search out the pungent intruder. Again, we have characters from all different Moomin books and comics humbled together, in a very much larger than canon house. This book is a photo picture book: each illustration was staged inside a large Moomin dolls house that Tove worked on in collaboration with her friends. It's more of a sculpture than a book? Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are The Boy Who Climbed Into the Moon by David Almond (honourable mention to How to Stay Sober When You'd Rather Be Dead which you can borrow from overdrive here: https://clevnet.overdrive.com/clevnet-ADVANTAGEKEY/content/media/1475832), Where the Wild Things Are (the movie). And Nina's Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is All About Agatha.

Trump gets subpoenaed by the January 6th committee. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to take a wrecking ball to higher education admission policies designed to help level the playing field for Black students and students of color. According to a bombshell report in Bloomberg by Josh Eidleson, a former manager at Starbucks in Buffalo, NY testified under oath to the National Labor Relations Board that he was “instructed to single out and discipline pro-union employees.” The manager, David Almond, testified that “Starbucks higher-ups listed names of employees the company had determined supported the union, and told him to punish them.” Leonard Leo begins to get the national scrutiny he deserves in a New York Times report on his influence and powerful right-wing network. A new study published in the ILR Review shows that “unionization throughout one's career is associated with a $1.3 million mean increase in lifetime earnings, larger than the average gains from completing college.” Pennsylvania Republicans have introduced their own version of the “Don't Say Gay” bill, which is even more restrictive than Florida. ACLU has filed a complaint against the Central Bucks School District with Civil Rights Divisions of the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education. The complaint argues that the district is in violation of both Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment for creating a hostile environment for LGBTQ students. The Proud Boys can be heard yelling “We are Penn State!” Yes, a Penn State group calling itself “Uncensored America,” founded by former president of Penn State's chapter of Turning Points USA and a field organizer for Trump in 2020, is bringing the founder of the Proud Boys, Gavin McInnes, to Penn State on October 24th. Billed as a “comedy show,” Nittany Lions will certainly be treated to all the hilarity of McInnes's misogyny, racism, and advocacy for political violence. Former Central Bucks school board member tweets out a thread about the ongoing trauma resulting from her time on the school board during the rise of extremism in the district. The Rings of Power finale is streaming now. House of the Dragon is closing in on the end of its first season, too. We can look forward to the coming of season 2 of the Wheel of Time

This month on Even the Trunchbull, we have a listener recommendation! Namely, Momo by Michael Ende (well known as the author of The Never Ending Story) as our chapter book, on a theme of ‘Time' – so that's what we've gone with! Momo is part celebration of community and part prescient cautionary tale about the dangers of the busy modern world. Momo and a magic tortoise called Cassiopeia must rescue the city from the faceless men in grey, who are determined to steal everyone's time. That's paired with picture book Clocks and More Clocks by Pat Hutchins (well known beloved picture book writer and one time narrator of Rosie and Jim). This one is both educational and wonderfully daft – essentially a gorgeously structured joke about the passage of time, in which one gentlemen fills his house with rather a lot of clocks. I talk about what I'm reading, how I'm doing with anxiety, what game I'm playing, and a fear that's creeping into my mind concerning the “return to normal” and how “post-pandemic” won't feel like returning to normal because Mom is dead. Also, side note: I talk about both of these books in a very mingled way and want to be clear here that Heaven's Eyes is by David Almond, and Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah. As always, I swear and talk about a lot of heavy stuff; you've been warned. I haven't had time to participate in the Prompts challenges lately, but I'm still including the link to that and my Twitter. Phil was born in Hull, where he grew up wanting to play football for Hull City. His first job was as a care worker in a children's home. Nowadays, when he's not writing, he works as head of sales and marketing for the independent book publisher, David Fickling Books, who publish Philip Pullman. We talk about getting into reading through comics and graphic novels, agree on a book that's a masterclass in structure and characterisation – a checklist of excellence, Phil calls it – and the joy of the rollercoaster of writing a story for the first time. When it comes to marketing, Phil believes in the power of the voice and is reassuringly passionate about supporting a writer through their career, and not just the debut, when they are the shiny new thing. But writers must put the work in too. Exploring landscape and environment in David Almond’s writing. Award-winning author David Almond and StoryMachine curator Janet Smyth discuss the ways in which his writing explores the connections between past and present; civilisation and wilderness; and language, myth and folklore. David’s latest novel, Bone Music, follows Sylvia as she moves into wild Northumberland from the city of Newcastle. She feels alien in this seemingly empty landscape, until she meets Gabriel, a strange-yet-familiar boy. As they roam the forests and fields together, she sees nature with new eyes. Bone Music is a book of hope and joy, which celebrates humanity and explores the deep connections between ourselves and nature. Part of a five-part series exploring diverse aspects of childrens’ literature.
Taylor Swift, who recently won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, has today released a new album called Fearless (Taylor's Version), which is an exact remake of her 2008 breakthrough album, Fearless. Music critic Sophie Harris explains why Taylor is repeating herself and reviews the new record. Tom Sutcliffe discusses HRH the Duke of Edinburgh's interest in art and literature with Jonathan Yeo, who painted his portrait, and Ian Lloyd, author of The Duke: 100 Chapters in the life of Prince Philip. Skellig author David Almond discusses his new novel Bone Music. Set in the forests and fells of Northern England, it's about a young girl who connects with a spiritual ancestor from the stone-age. Critics Jan Asante and Kohinoor Sahota discuss the provocative new Amazon drama, Them. Does it offer something new in the politicised American gothic horror genre or is it just a Jordan Peele rip off? David Almond is a British writer born in Newcastle on the north side of the Tyne and raised in Gateshead on the south of the river. His writing is infused with the culture and language of the northeast.David's latest book Bone Music is an extraordinary prose poem that distils and amplifies many of the themes from his earlier work. It's the only novel that I have read cover to cover and then immediately started at the beginning again and read from cover to cover, so I was thrilled to welcome David into The Reading Corner.
The state released a report saying Fall River and state agencies should have protected 14-year-old David Almond, who died in his father's custody. WBZ NewsRadio's Karyn Regal has the story.
To wrap up series five, we're doffing our hats to audiobook narrators. First Nina and Matt meander down memory lane, reminiscing about books on tape we listened to in the 1990s. Then we move on to recommend a clutch of excellent narrators: Cecelia Ramsdale, who performed Pog by Padraig Kenny Ben Onwukwe, who we enjoyed reading Ikenga by Nnedi Okorafor Aoife MacMahon, who amongst others has performed Begone the Raggedy Witches by Celine Kiernan David Tennant, with The Wizards of Once series by Cressida Cowell, and others And Malcolm Hamilton, David Almond's regular audiobook performer it seems, who reads The Boy Who Climbed into the Moon and The Tale of Angelino Brown We crowdsourced this one a little bit - thank you to all who submitted your favourite audiobook narrators! Here are the other recommendations that we got: Huw Parmenter, reading Cart and Cwidder by Diana Wynne Jones Alex Jennings, reading The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper Miriam Margolyes, reading Matilda by Roald Dahl and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by CS Lewis Carl Prekopp, reading the Half Bad series by Sally Green (fyi, this is YA, not kidlit) Simon Russell Beale, reading Children of the Red King, by Jenny Nimmo Episode Transcript will follow later this week, and will be available here - https://eventhetrunchbull.wordpress.com/home/transcripts/ And as always you can check out our bookshop dot org shop front here - https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/trunchbullpod What A Wonderful Day is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License by Shane Ivers of silvermansound.com

"They tell us that we live on a tiny crowded island. They try to tell us that we are tiny within ourselves. Tell them to come up here with the skylark, to forget what they think they know, and to look down upon the vastness of the North." David Almond, from Sing the North. Welcome to our audio series which explores the work created for the New Narratives for the North East project through a series of four podcast episodes. Join us in this episode to explore the North-East's distinctive urban spaces and explore how those on the inside read and think about our cities and towns Hear from many of the writers involved in the project about the ideas that inspired their work and also their relationship with the region and regional identity. Through interview and extracts of their work as well as the varied sounds of the North East, many of the themes of the work come to the fore. Here we discuss what makes this part of England distinct and what its future might look like. The characters that emerge are not just those of the writers, but also that of the sea, or the Wall, or indeed the multi-faceted region itself. New Narratives for the North East is a New Writing North commission with the North East Cultural Partnership supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This series is produced for Durham Book Festival, a Durham County Council festival supported by Durham University and Arts Council England. The series was made in York by Sonderbug Productions with music specially composed and recorded in Newcastle by Jayne Dent.

Snide (Snide London) is aimed at customers who care about how they look, enjoy spending money on superior brands, and yet are keen to let the world know they don't take themselves too seriously. They are sophisticated but have a sense of humour and a sense of irony. The brand is a parody of fake items from the Far East. Snide is the slang for a fake in London and they are also sometimes called Jekyls (Jekyls and Hydes = Snides). Their tag line is 'Never Knowingly Right' and the designs all feature a small, and often very subtle mistake. These mistakes, although often not nearly as subtle, often appear in fake goods as their manufacturers are not au fait with the English language or Western culture. Their shirts and polo shirts feature a small logo that, at first glance, resembles Ralph Lauren's Polo design, but on closer inspection it's actually an old-fashioned golfer, hitting a rugby ball, with a hockey stick. In this episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interview David Almond, Founder of Snide London about the backstory of how the brand concept was born. It was a fake luxury watch showing the date of the 41st of January which first got them thinking about how they could use subtle mistakes in their graphics as the ethos for their new brand. Our host Peter Brooker and David also talk about the importance of an original brand story, using high quality materials and fabrics, the fake news zeitgeist, conducting market research at clothing exhibitions, the effects of Covid-19 on trade, and adopting social media for branding.Whilst we have your attention, be sure to sign up to our daily MenswearStyle newsletter here. We promise to only send you the good stuff.

This week we're reading around the theme of loneliness and we're reviewing one of Matt's all time favourites, the Boy Who Climbed into the Moon by David Almond. We talk about determinism, Jesus-like characters, free will and the space/time continuum. And then we talk about Beegu, with special focus on alien hieroglyphics, the colour yellow and what big ears are for. We did some extra research around The Boy Who Climbed into the Moon because Matt loved it so much, and we thought we'd share what we found here in the show notes. The North East of England's Case for Culture is a bold plan to raise £300 million for art projects. Instead of being an adjunct to development culture is seen as the key to the region's redevelopment. But only a few years ago Newcastle cut its arts budget entirely. Organisations are exploring new ways of working. Jim Beirne of Live Theatre takes John Wilson to the pub the theatre runs, the profits of which pay for a new play every year. It also owns restaurants and prime office space, to fund its theatre and outreach projects. The Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell has just launched a new organisation, Magnetic North East, to foster the identity, music and traditions of the North East. It has released an album of songs and tunes, new and old, about the River Tyne, by artists ranging from Jimmy Nail to the Unthanks. Last Friday it held a grand concert in the region's village hall - Auditorium One of The Sage, featuring famous North East artists such as Paul Smith of the band Maximo Park, young folk musicians and a host of children giving a world premiere of a work by David Almond.Kathryn Tickell, John Mowbray - the High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, and a prime mover in the Case for Culture, David Almond, who wrote Skellig, the Olivier Award winning playwright, Shelagh Stephenson, whose new play is set in her hometown of Tynemouth, all contribute to John Wilson's exploration, as he rambles around Newcastle, of the role of art in the regeneration of the North East of England.Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May.
Newcastle writer David Almond investigates the story of a wild child who was said to roam the Yorkshire Dales near Crackpot Hall in the 1930s - and makes a surprising discovery. Crackpot Hall is an ancient, ruined farmhouse near the village of Keld, which lies on the crossroads of the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast Path in Swaledale. In its time, it has been a hunting lodge, an office for the local lead-mining industry and a family farm. The acclaimed children's writer David Almond has long been intrigued by Crackpot Hall, and for decades has travelled west from his home near Newcastle to visit it. Recently, his curiosity was rekindled when he read about Alice, a four-year old child who was said to have been discovered roaming wild near Crackpot in the 1930s. Led by the fabled laughter of Alice, David set out to find the wild child again and hear her story. Prepared to engage his imagination as a writer if facts alone failed, David was amazed by what Crackpot could still reveal. Spoiler Alert: Alice was 4 years old when Ella Pontefract and Marie Hartley, the author and illustrator of a 1930s guide-book to Swaledale declared they had found her - "with a mocking, chuckling laugh" as she roamed alone with her dog and cats near Crackpot. Like many others, David believed Alice to be a figment of the two women's imagination, so he set out to make a programme about how places create stories. He found Alice, now 88, living in a village near Carlisle, and as full of laughter as ever. With music arranged by the Leeds-based composer Emily Levy. Producer: Beaty Rubens.
Anne McElvoy explores whether it is worth getting hot under the collar about blue collar history with historian Alison Light, David Almond and Eliza Carthy. Once upon a time the working class were heroes; their close-knit communities were celebrated. Has this working class disappeared along with the great industries- steel -coal and ship building - that brought them into being? Is the working class now a figment of other people's dreams or nightmares? This event was recorded in front of an audience at the Free Thinking Festival at Sage, Gateshead on 02.11.14.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the writer David Almond. Most of his work is for children but the adults who populate the juries of heavyweight literary prizes really like it too. The accolades began with his first novel Skellig published in 1998 when he was 47; it won the mighty "Whitbread Children's" award and then many others besides.Ever since, he's been acclaimed for his ability to craft complex, philosophical narratives with strikingly down to earth characterisations. He grew up just outside Newcastle in a big, Catholic family and his childhood features heavily in his stories. He says "Each of my books has had to be written - there was something that had to come out."Producer: Alison Hughes.

David Almond talks about his prize winning novel, Skellig, which is loved by children and adults alike. Skellig is the story of what happens when a Newcastle boy finds a strange man living in the garage of his new home. Michael sets out to help the ill Skellig recover. With him is his new unconventional friend Mina, who David Almond says is the star of the book. She introduces Michael to the worlds of nature and evolution, and to William Blake's poetry, his drawings of angels, his views on education. David says that when Mina walked into the book she brought Blake with her. David Almond's story centres on the imaginations of children - is Skellig an Angel, or perhaps a man evolving into a bird? In the programme, David refuses to confirm either, saying that to him, Skellig is as much of a mystery as he is to the reader. Recorded at the Lit and Phil Library in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
