Coach Kevin Hickey, Today we are talking to Coach Kevin Hickey. Coach Hickey is currently an assistant coach for Coach Scott Sorenson at Northland College. Coach Sorenson has been the leader of this D3 college in Wisconsin for the past 11 seasons. I met Coach Kevin during my last year working for Coach Rob Murphy at Eastern Michigan. I was blown away with his story. As we all know, life happens. And, Kevin is a great example of this. He started his college education at Bowling Green University. At BG, Coach Kevin was both a student assistant coach and video coordinator for Coach Louis Orr. Life happened and Coach Kevin left college to tend to his mother, who was having some health issues. In the meantime, Coach Kevin would then go to work for Coach Jimmy Reddy at Canton High School. Coach Kevin would assist Coach Reddy and coach the freshman and JV teams at Canton. Making the decision to return to college, Kevin enrolled at Eastern Michigan. He finished his degree as a student assistant coach with the EMU Men's program. After graduating from EMU, Coach Kevin was hired by Coach Ricky Yahn at Concordia University. After gaining incredible experience working for Coach Ricky, he was hired by Coach Scott this past summer. Coach Kevin is in year one with the Northland College men's basketball program. If you are a coach, who has been told numerous times that you can't be a college coach - for numerous reasons - then, this is a conversation for you. Coach Kevin's story will INSPIRE you to continue to chase your dreams. Follow Coach Kevin Hickey @coach_khickeyFollow Tell Me Your Story Coach @CoachKevinDro

Casualties are a fact of military life. Whether the result of a training accident, peacekeeping operations or full scale combat, the military has made the commitment to guide families through the very difficult circumstances of a service member's death with the aid of Casualty Assistance Officers (CAO). Sadly through repetition the U.S. Army has created training and programs and processes that are world class. Unfortunately, when the odd circumstances surrounding the captivity of Bowe Bergdahl by the Haqqani network in Afghanistan and Pakistan occurred, it highlighted the deficiencies of the CAO program when addressing prisoners of non-state actors and violent extremist organizations (VEOs). This isn't the story of Bergdahl's ordeal. It's the experiences of Kevin Hickey the CAO for the Bergdahl family and he joins Ron Granieri in the studio to discuss his observations over five long years supporting them. He's researching and proposing improvements and changes to the traditional CAO program to make sure that the U.S. Army is prepared for situations like the Bergdahl's when it happens again one day.

We don't often think about the professionals working for the Church, but in every diocese in the world professionals work every day to keep the lights on, provide services, handle the accounting, staff the schools, and a myriad of other blue-collar and white-collar jobs. With that in mind we brought a few of our favorite people together to chat, both in terms of why they work for the Church and who they look to hire. Joining hosts Jen Mauro and Mike Walsh today are Diocese of Camden professionals Karen Fisher, manager of parish-based senior programs for VITALity Catholic Healthcare Services; Kevin Hickey, executive director of Catholic Charities; and Dr. Bill Watson, Superintendent of Schools. It's a great conversation on the personal, professional and spiritual fulfillment that can be found working for our faith. On Slice 21 we blow the final whistle on Loaf 1 of the podcast with referees and all round characters Barry Kelly, Niall Ward and Ken "Bangie" Gunning. Kevin Hickey, the award-winning chef from The Duck Inn, joins Anna to offer some invaluable Thanksgiving cooking tips as you prepare to cook your turkey for the upcoming holiday.
It’s our 200th episode! Traditionally, we prefer to do live shows in front of an audience when we hit a new centennial mark, however this year we had to put a halt to that to comply with pandemic guidelines. So instead, we decided to record a Zoom episode with all of our hosts and a few of our favorite guests from the past year. (Not only are we celebrating 200 episodes but we’re also celebrating a belated one year anniversary to our three co-hosts who started on the show on October 9, 2019). On this week’s podcast, our quartet of hosts - Mike Walsh, Mary McCusker, Kari Janisse, Marianela Nunez - welcomed onto the show: Kevin Hickey, Executive Director, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden Donna Ottaviano-Britt, Director, Office of Discipleship & Leadership, Diocese of Camden Fr. Peter Gallagher, Pontifical North American College Fr. Joshua Nevitt, Director of Catholic Identity, Holy Spirit High School Mary Beth Peabody, Communications Manager, Office of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Camden The nine discussed the evolution of the Talking Catholic show and its expansion into the YouTube universe with several other shows. We also chatted about how all of our guests have transitioned into the on-line universe with great success, as they had to move from in-person to virtual events and communications this year. It’s a great chat this week, very uplifting and provides a lot of tips for those who are looking to make a bigger splash in the on-line world. This episode is available in both the audio format (everyplace podcasts can be accessed, and in our regular time slots on Domestic Church Radio) but also as a video podcast at youtube.com/talkingcatholic. Making his triumphant return to the Talking Catholic podcast is Kevin Hickey, executive director of Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Camden. One of our favorite recurring guests, Kevin chats with us this week about the organization’s Justice for All ceremony, this year being held virtually on October 8, 2020. For 17 years, the South Jersey Catholic Charities agency has held the Justice for All dinner to showcase the great work being done in the region and to raise much needed funds. The agency is able to serve approximately 24,000 individuals each year, in large part because of funds raised by the Justice for All ceremony. It is the largest fundraiser held by the agency and all funds raised from the event are used for direct client services. Since its inception in 2004, it has raised more than 1 million dollars, every penny of which is used to meet the needs of the poorest and the marginalized – families who are homeless or facing homelessness, those with mental health or substance abuse crises, individuals struggling with hardships such as losing their jobs or being forced to choose between paying for food or medications. The Justice for All event also honors those who have proven a life-long commitment to serving the poor and the vulnerable, highlighting their work and their commitment to charity and social justice. This year, Catholic Charities will bestow five Disciples of Mercy awards on individuals and groups, as well as the Saint John Neumann award to Bishop Dennis Sullivan of the Diocese of Camden for his long-time support of Catholic Charities. If you would like to watch the event or support the event through sponsorships or by partaking in their on-line auction, go to https://catholiccharitiescamden.org/jfa2020/. Former White Sox pitcher Kevin Hickey defied the odds again and again in his life, getting a contract with the White Sox on a tryout in 1978 and later receiving a World Series ring in 2005. It's a surreal journey that you have to hear to believe. Chuck Garfien speaks with Kevin's brother Tom about Kevin's upbringing, growing up two blocks away from Comiskey Park (1:30), the stories behind his White Sox tryout despite never playing organized baseball (5:45), his major league debut in 1981 (10:30), notorious bar fights (13:00), teaching Charlie Sheen how to pitch for the movie Major League 2 (22:00), getting a job with the White Sox (25:10), his part in the A.J. Pierzynski/Michael Barrett fight (28:30) and much more.
The Indianapolis Colts bounced back in a big way in Week 11 as they dominated the ground attack, and put another quality defensive effort in the books. However, in Week 12, and on a short week at that, the Colts will have their hands full with Deshaun Watson and the Houston Texans in NRG Stadium. On today's show, Kevin Hickey of the Colts Wire, joins Matt Danely to take a look at the current state of the Colts, as well as a look ahead to their Thursday Night Football matchup. The Colts have a few key pieces ruled out for the game, and another handful who are still questionable -- including T.Y. Hilton -- but luckily, the Texans are banged up as well. This meeting could not be more important for the Colts. They currently have the same record as the Texans, but the Colts hold the tie-breaker as it currently stands. With a win Thursday night in Houston, the Colts will ultimately hold a two-game lead over their AFC South foes, and remain undefeated within the division. The Colts will need to get their running game on track without Marlon Mack there to lead the way, the receiving corps may have to continue another game without Hilton, and the offensive line is looking to put another quality game together while improving their pass protection in the process. The Colts' defense has been the team's strength over the past several weeks, and they're going to need another impressive outing against Watson and this Texans' offense who will be looking to bounce back after a massive Week 11 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Matt and Kevin discuss all of this and more as the Colts hope to create more space between themselves and the rest of the AFC South. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Please make sure you listen to the end to hear Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle’s remarks to the people of the Camden Diocese as he accepts the Saint John Neumann award for his work with Caritas Internationalis. Today’s hosts, Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh, are joined by Kevin Hickey, CC’s Executive Director; Samantha Astley, Volunteer Coordinator; and Jose Sanchez, Program Director.

Too many times the weight of planning and running a successful gig crumbles the unprepared. A well planned and booked event is the creme-de-la-creme of the DIY scene; a creation of band alliances, new friendships blossomed and sick riffs to be shared and shredded. Majority of times the uninitiated may take on the incredible task of seeing a gig, festival, or booked show through and expect it to fall into place, when in reality...things are much more tedious than expected! Venture with Nick, Noah and Kevin into the vast abyss of preparing a show.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/whydiypodcast)

The day before she was honored at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, Inc.'s Justice for All dinner, Sr. Norma Pimentel, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, sat down with Mike and Pete for an engaging talk on her work working with immigrants leaving federal custody having crossed the U.S./Mexico border, its joys, and its struggles. As the Indianapolis Colts prepare for their Week 3 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles the personnel availability for both teams is not pretty. Each squad faces a loss of multiple heavy contributors, which ironically also will feature the return of Carson Wentz for his 2018 debut. The Colts won't have Jack Doyle, Anthony Castonzo or Marlon Mack against a very stout Philly front seven, but the Eagles' backfield is coming in with a depleted backfield and receiver corps which may be a lot for Wentz to deal with in his first game back. Today we welcome Kevin Hickey (Colts Wire) to dive into what the Colts have left for them to throw at the Eagles on both sides of the ball, and Michael Kist (Bleeding Green Nation) joins in the second half of the show to take a look at the other side of the equation. The Colts certainly have their hands full this Sunday, and will likely see tight end Erik Swoope elevated to the active roster in place of Doyle, and we should expect Margus Hunt to pull double duty with, both, Denico Autry and Hassan Ridgeway already confirmed to be OUT in this one. Can the Colts defense find success by going after the Eagles' offensive strengths? Will Jim Schwartz be able to out scheme Frank Reich considering their familiarity with each other's respective tendencies? We look at all of these situations and much more in our Week 3 primer to get you all set for this weekend's game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Airwaves Full of Bacon 16: Greg Biggers of the Sofitel Vs. The City • What's Next After the City Shut Down Underground Chef Julia Pham • Kevin Hickey Returns To Bridgeport • Kate Bernot Leaves Chicago For Beer Click on the above to go to iTunes, Stitcher, Twitter or Facebook. ______________________________________________________________________________ It's the city episode! All the stories have to do with dealing with this city... and the City. (1:16) First up, chef Greg Biggers of Cafe des Architectes in the Sofitel Hotel takes me inside their circuitous kitchens to tell the story of how he had to work with the City to get to do the things he wanted to do... notably, make cheese. It's a great look inside the health and regulatory process in Chicago. (20:06) Then I talk with underground chef Julia Pham, whose Relish Underground Dining came to a halt when she was busted by the City. After that, I list some of my favorite Asian restaurants in the Argyle area. I wrote about Nha Hang here, and made this video about the old Sun Wah. Here's more about Double Happiness, where we met up. (35:05) Kevin Hickey's the Duck Inn marks his return to Bridgeport. We talk about that most traditional of old school Chicago neighborhoods, including mentions of Ricobene's and Bridgeport Bakery. A much longer version of this ran in two parts here and here at the Reader. Here's the original Duck Inn, c. 1935, owned by his grandmother (the lady behind the counter). (50:01) And finally, I talk with Kate Bernot, late of Redeye, about leaving Chicago. Here's her farewell piece.
