Jacinda steps down, Pfizer gives away drugs, OpenAI's Kenyan workforce, and Mark Prince is excited about recession-related deaths
FRIDAY WRAP: Jacinda steps down, Pfizer gives away drugs, OpenAI's Kenyan workforce, and Mark Prince is excited about recession related deaths
Alcohol and other drugs are sometimes accompanied by harms from use. However, use only accounts for some of the variance in substance use harms, and their are strategies, and harms can be reduced through other means aside from reductions in substance use. This is particularly important because many who use substances do not have a desire to quit or cut down on their use, even if they do experience harms. In this episode, Dr. Mark Prince discusses the literature on protective behavioral strategies, or any behavioral strategy that may reduce the harm of substance use, often through reduction of risky behaviors while using (i.e., drinking and driving) or through changes in the way the substance is consumed (i.e., drinking water in between alcoholic drinks). Dr. Prince is an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of Addiction Counseling in the Department of Psychology at Colorado State University. Click here for Dr. Prince's paper quantifying the variance unexplained by alcohol consumption alone.
Advertisers often talk about supporting Black- and minority-owned media companies. It's Mark Prince's job to help them turn those pledges into action. As SVP and head of economic empowerment at Dentsu Media, he pushes brands to consistently diversify their media mix – and move away from one-off investments.

MicroOLED is a company that develops high-performance OLED microdisplays for near-to-eye applications. Power efficiency and brightness are two areas where they excel, and the company is bringing that display technology to life through the ENGO Eyewear product line.Eric studied physics, optics, and electronics in grad school before working on visual systems for defense contractor Thales. He then went on to work at, what is today named Technicolor, but back then was Thomson, on imager technologies and strategic sourcing. There has been plenty of talk among advertisers and agencies about the need for brands to move ad dollars to minority-owned publishers to ensure they are reaching as many potential customers as possible. As svp and head of economic empowerment at Dentsu Media, Mark Prince is charged with turning that talk into action. “We're guiding our internal investment and strategy teams to make sure that we have the framework that really fosters the inclusion of our diverse-owned outlets, working hard to remove the barriers that have long existed depending on the type of media that we're working with in this space and also making sure that our diversity vendors are heard,” Prince said in the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast. An important aspect of Dentsu's economic empowerment team is that it doesn't sit in a silo but is part of the media agency's investment group. “It was really important that we have a seat at the table where the dollars are being allocated,” Prince said. The economic empowerment team's involvement in Dentsu clients' investment strategies will play a role in ensuring that the agency group is able to meet its goal of 15% of its annual budget across media, creative and customer experience management to be spent with diverse-owned suppliers by 2025.

Isaiah and I talk about the past few weeks: DoubleShot Latte Art Comp, Seattle, CoffeeFest, Victrola, and Ferraris' film in Kansas City. Isaiah requested that I play some 80's Christian Rock, so I couldn't resist digging for some of the old jr. high favorite lipsync tunes. Oh, and our podcast wouldn't be complete without... Mark Prince.
It's the second half of the SCAA Convention. Isaiah and I team up to tell the rest of the story. Mark Prince, Ethiopia, Billy Wilson, Doug Zell, Chris Baca and mini me, Synesso, Barefoot Andy, siphon coffee, Caribou, the Holy Coffee Bean, and the USBC. Drink more coffee.
It's the BIG 50th episode of AA Cafe! Isaiah and I bore you through one more episode. We encourage you to ask questions (of Nick Cho mostly). Mark Prince of Coffeegeek calls in and praises the DoubleShot Coffee Company - what a sweetie pie. I tell a little about my trip to Guatemala (don't miss the mugging). And I ask a lot of questions about coffee processing.
