Eye on NPI - Orion Fans' ML2010 Mini-lab

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2023 9:03

This weeks EYE ON NPI is a real throwback for us, it's the Orion Fans' ML2010 Mini-lab (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/o/orion-fans/ml2010-mini-lab), a portable engineering toolkit built into a suitcase for easy transport. This Mini-lab reminds us of the MIT Nerd-Kit used in digital and and analog design classes that require construction of circuit labs (http://web.mit.edu/6.111/www/project-photos/s98-projects-photos/s98projects.html). These suitcases were durable ...and super heavy! Thankfully we did not have to carry them back and forth to home each day - there were lockers in the lab. Many a digital-lab student wished we could keep the kits after finishing the course but sadly nerd-kits were not for sale - and we shudder to think what fate would befall us if we neglected to return them. Which is why this NPI caught my eye...finally I can have my very own nerd-kit thanks to Orion Fans and Knight Electronic Products. This silver suitcase contains many common analog and digital-logic tools to help prototype projects on a breadboard: Breadboard Power supplies Function generator stimulus Sweep ramp generator stimulus Pulse generator stimulus Protoboard I/O ports Switches Indicators Heavy-duty carrying case The solderless breadboarding area is made of three 630-point solderless breadboards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/solderless-breadboards/638), so large circuits with many breakout and dev board PCBs can be laid out. There's also a separate perf-board area (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/prototype-boards-perforated/636?s=N4IgTCBcDaIA4FMBOAzABAIwPYEMkBMQBdAXyA) for higher-frequency work that could be affected by the breadboard capacitance, or when you want more mechanical stability. The perf-board snaps out when your project is done. The power supplies are where analog hackers are going to be happy, particularly folks who are designing exotic motor/power systems or audio/synthesizers: it has both +5, -5, +12, and -12V at 1 Amp output split supplies, and isolated-ground +18 and -18V at 1 Amp outputs, all with 0.1% line/load regulation and short circuit protection. For AC supply design - rare to find, so if you need it this will be a blessing - there's 15VAC center tapped that can supply 500mA. The power supplies are fused, and controlled by a large on/off rocker. Another great feature for analog hackers: there's also a full-featured function generator (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/function-generators/630), with sine/square/triangle out - up to 18Vpp and +-10V DC offset with selectable decade ranges from 1Hz to 1MHz, and low distortion under 100KHz. There's inputs for FM, AM and sweep modulation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulation), for low-frequency RF experimentation. There's also a plethora of connectors and switches so you don't have to figure out how to panel mount connectors or work out mechanical stabilization. For toggle switches, there are 2x SPDT momentary toggles, 2 x SPDT toggles, and 8x logic level toggle switches. D-Sub connectors also: DE-9 and DE-25 in plug and socket format. For connecting to other test equipment, 3x BNCs. And for input/output, 8x red LEDs, a 1K pot, a 100K pot, and an 8 ohm 1/4 W speaker. The Orion Fans' Mini-lab toolkit (https://www.digikey.com/short/bdhcv3pw) would make a great resource at a lab, workshop or classroom. It's hefty and durable but that also means it'll last a long time. It's an excellent step up from just cobbling together parts that can come loose, and you can put it away safely between hacking sessions without the risk of someone 'borrowing' a part! And best of all, it's in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order today and you can be prototyping in style on your very own Mini-Lab by tomorrow afternoon.

The effect of random and systematic visual stimulation on entrained infraslow quasi-periodic global waves in human brain activity

Abstract: Infraslow ( less than 0.1Hz) electric activity, involved in attention and arousal fluctuations, serve as the unique neurophysiological basis for infraslow BOLD fluctuations. Particularly, the dynamics of infraslow electrical activity in both resting and task-performing human brains exhibit a quasi-periodic pattern (QPP) of consistent, phase-locked spatiotemporal BOLD signal changes. However, it is unclear how environmental stimuli affect the infraslow dynamic QPP or how the ongoing infraslow dynamics might modify the response to the environment in awake humans. To investigate this, we presented checkerboard sequences flashing at 8Hz to subjects. This is a salient visual stimulus that is known to produce a strong response in visual processing regions. Three central questions were investigated: 1) how does visual stimulation affect the QPPs compared to rest, 2) how does variability in visual stimulus onset affect the QPPs, and 3) how does the BOLD response to visual stimuli depend on the phases of the QPPs. Two different visual stimulation sequences were employed, a systematic stimulation sequence in which the visual stimulus appeared every 20.3 secs and a random stimulation sequence in which the visual stimulus occurred randomly every 14~62.3 secs. Three central observations emerged. First, the systematic condition produced a different spatiotemporal pattern of infraslow dynamics compared to both the resting-state and the random stimulation conditions. Second, the QPP was more frequent in the systematic condition with significantly shorter intervals between consecutive QPPs compared to the random condition. Third, the BOLD signal response to the visual stimulus across both conditions was swamped by the QPP at the stimulus onset. These results provide novel insights into the relationship between intrinsic patterns and task-evoked brain activity. Copy rights belong to original authors. Satellite shadows through stellar occultations by Paul J. Groot. on Thursday 22 September The impact of mega-constellations of satellites in low-Earth orbit during nighttime optical observations is assessed. Orbital geometry is used to calculate the impact of stellar occultations by satellites on the photometry of individual stars as well as the effect on the photometric calibration of wide-field observations. Starlink-type satellites will have occultation disks several arcseconds across. Together with occultation crossing times of 0.1-100 msec, this will lead to photometric `jitter' on the flux determination of stars. The level of impact for a given star depends on the ratio of the integration time of the frame over the occultation crossing time. In current-day, CCD-based synoptic surveys this impact is negligible (

Welcome to another episode of The 5G Guys! Dan here again, on the last two shows I have been flying solo as my co-host Wayne continues to travel the world. While he is jet-setting, we thought it would be the perfect time to get the latest insight into how real the 5G interference issue is for the US aviation industry. This is not a topic I would dare tackle alone. Rather, I thought we could all go straight to the source himself.  In today's episode, I am joined by the one and only Vance Hilderman. Vance is the CEO of Afuzion and incorporated one of the world's largest aviation and safety-critical services companies. They provide advanced consulting services in software and systems development with a primary focus on safety, critical aviation, automotive systems, and more! Vance truly is the expert witness for aviation and he has the best-selling book to prove it.  Hit play to get caught up to speed on everything 5G Interference! If this is your first time listening to the show, let me catch you up to speed.  Back on episode 17: FLASHPOD: Why 5G Has Been Delayed - The FAA's Warning to Verizon and AT&T We discussed how the FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin warned about potential risks to aviators in the US using older radio altimeter technology that new 5G deployments in a new frequency band (called C Band) could cause interference.  In response, AT&T and Verizon announced they would be delaying their start to deploying 5G in their newly acquired C Band spectrum one month from Dec 5th, 2021 to Jan 5th, 2022.  Clearly, that didn't happen since it's almost the Summertime of 2022.  Fast forward to episode 22: 22. FLASHPOD: Updates on the 5G standoff between AT&T/Verizon and US aviation industry We got an update on the latest situation covered, the history that led up to the current situation, FCC, telecom, airline input into issues, and more.  We've offered the perspective from our side in the telecom industry, so now let's turn the tables and get the perspective from the avionics side. During this conversation, Vance shares his awesome perspective on what's going on with the 5G situation and how a solution could be close. Hear how different industries and governments around the world are coming together to see this technology succeed. You'll also hear Vance's perspective on how the aviation industry is booming and how we could start seeing flying cars, electric planes and so much more sooner than we think.  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Imagine this, you're getting ready for a big event you are hosting and you have done everything you can do to make sure the party goes perfect. You got the best food, booked the entertainment, made sure you got a babysitter, you pulled out your best clothes, you're getting ready to leave, and then out of nowhere... Your preparations and planning take a 180 and the party has to be moved...   Well, we imagine the executives of Verizon and AT&T have a similar feeling right now.  Welcome back to 5G Guys! Last week (Nov 2, 2021) the FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin warning about potential risks to aviators in the US using older radio altimeter technology. That the new 5G deployments in a new frequency band (called C Band) could cause interference. In response, AT&T and Verizon announced they would be delaying their start to deploying 5G in their newly acquired C Band spectrum one month from Dec 5th, 2021 to Jan 5th, 2022.   Listen in as we discuss what this breaking news means for the big three carriers and how that affects our economy. We talk about exactly how much money this delay will cost, why the FAA is bringing this up now, and other possible theories for pushing the rollout to the beginning of next year. There are a lot of different factors that go into green-lighting these decisions, we go over some of these and more in today's episode. One thing is for sure when the private sector crosses with federal agencies it makes for some interesting dynamics and news we‘ll be sure to keep an eye on. Despite the disappointing nature of it all, both Verizon and AT&T are committed to serving over 100 million people next year alone. Abstract: Age-dependent functional changes are mirrored by declines in both the central nervous system (CNS) and in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and have been related to pathological aging. Prior studies have demonstrated inter-dependence between central and autonomic events that contribute to cognition. Moreover, our group recently identified a temporal coupling of Autonomic and Central Events (ACEs) during sleep using electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure heart rate and electroencephalography (EEG) to measure sleeping brain rhythms [40]. We showed that heart rate bursts (HRBs) temporally coincided with increased slow wave activity (SWA, 0.5-1Hz) and sigma activity (12-15Hz), followed by parasympathetic surge (RRHF) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Given that there are paralleling age-related declines in both the ANS and CNS, the current study investigated how these declining systems impact ACE coupling during daytime naps in older and younger adults. Despite, lower overall EEG activity during ACE windows in older adults, both younger and older adults showed HRB-modulated increases in SWA and sigma during wake and N2. However, older adults did not show the same pattern during N3. Furthermore, while younger adults demonstrated a RRHF increase only after HRBs, older adults showed an earlier rise and maintenance of the RRHF. Taken together, our results demonstrated that ACE activity remains generally intact with age. Given that age-related deterioration in autonomic and central nervous system activity is implicated in pathological decline, the general maintenance of alignment between the two systems is intriguing and may facilitate novel insights to aging. Abstract: Bistable perception is characterized by periodic alternation between two different perceptual interpretations, the mechanism of which is poorly understood. Herein, we show that perceptual decisions in bistable perception are strongly correlated with slow rhythmic eye motion, the frequency of which varies across individuals. From eye gaze trajectory measurements during three types of bistable tasks, we found that each subject gaze position oscillates slowly(less than 1Hz), and that this frequency matches that of bistable perceptual alternation. Notably, the motion of the eye apparently moves in opposite directions before two opposite perceptual decisions, and this enables the prediction of the timing and direction of perceptual alternation from eye motion. We also found that the correlation between eye movement and a perceptual decision is maintained during variations of the alternation frequency by the intentional switching or retaining of perceived states. This result suggests that periodic bistable perception is phase-locked with rhythmic eye motion. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Abstract: Findings from neuroimaging studies show low replication rates, but the origin of the problem is not clear. The current project explored the extent of the time-of-day dependent metabolic variation to the replication crisis. Using data from the human connectome project (HCP) release S1200, cross-spectral density dynamic causal modelling was used to analyse time-dependent effects on the hemodynamic response and effective connectivity parameters in the spontaneous fluctuations (>0.1Hz) of the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal. Hierarchical group-parametric empirical Bayes found no support for time-of-day variations in effective connectivity, whereas the hemodynamic parameters exhibited a significant time-of-day dependent effect. It is concluded that these findings urge the need to account for the time of day in data acquisition of future MRI studies. Moreover, data from the human connectome project suggest that the relationship between functional and dynamic connectivity and the BOLD signal might not be direct. Coupling between fast and slow oscillator circuits in Cancer borealis is temperature compensated

Abstract: Coupled oscillatory circuits are ubiquitous in nervous systems. Given that most biological processes are temperature sensitive, it is remarkable that the neuronal circuits of poikilothermic animals can maintain coupling across a wide range of temperatures. Within the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of the crab Cancer borealis, the fast pyloric rhythm (~1Hz) and the slow gastric mill rhythm (~0.1Hz) are precisely coordinated at ~11{degrees}C such that there are an integer number of pyloric cycles per gastric mill cycle (integer coupling). Upon increasing temperature from 7-23{degrees}C, both oscillators showed similar temperature-dependent increases in cycle frequency, and integer coupling between the circuits was conserved. Thus, although both rhythms show temperature dependent changes in rhythm frequency, the processes that couple these circuits maintain their coordination over a wide range of temperature. Such robustness to temperature changes could be part of a toolbox of processes that enables neural circuits to maintain function despite global perturbations. Copy rights belong to original authors. M., Machado Curbelo, C., Leisman, G., Beltran Leon, C. Abstract: The fast Fourier transform (FFT), has been the main tool for the EEG spectral analysis (SPA). However, as the EEG dynamics shows nonlinear and non-stationary behavior, results using the FFT approach may result meaningless. A novel method has been developed for the analysis of nonlinear and non-stationary signals known as the Hilbert-Huang transform method. In this study we describe and compare the spectral analyses of the EEG using the traditional FFT approach with those calculated with the Hilbert marginal spectra (HMS) after decomposition of the EEG with a multivariate empirical mode decomposition algorithm. Segments of continuous 60-seconds EEG recorded from 19 leads of 47 healthy volunteers were studied. Although the spectral indices calculated for the explored EEG bands showed significant statistical differences for different leads and bands, a detailed analysis showed that for practical purposes both methods performed substantially similar. The HMS showed a reduction of the alpha activity (-5.64%), with increment in the beta-1 (+1.67%), and gamma (+1.38%) fast activity bands, and also an increment in the theta band (+2.14%), and in the delta (+0.45%) band, and vice versa for the FFT method. For the weighted mean frequencies insignificant mean differences (lower than 1Hz) were observed between both methods for the delta, theta, alpha, beta-1 and beta-2 bands, and only for the gamma band values for the HMS were 3 Hz higher than with the FFT method. The HMS may be considered a good alternative for the SPA of the EEG when nonlinearity or non-stationarity may be present. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

What use is an F-call? From DC to Daylight is a term that until I became an Amateur, I'd never heard of and since becoming licensed I've bumped into it more than a couple of times. Once you sit and think about it, the notion, from DC to Daylight makes perfect sense, but what does it mean? I'll start off with that I'm not talking about Cheap Therapy for your Inner Problem Child - the Rock band based in San Jose, California. So, DC, or Direct Current, as opposed to AC, or Alternating Current does not change frequency, that is, the positive and negative poles never swap over, so the frequency that they switch at is 0Hz or zero times per second. If you reverse the poles, the frequency at which you do that, say flick a switch once every second, the frequency is 1Hz. AC does it 50 or 60 times per second, or 50 or 60 Hz. As you keep increasing the frequency, you'll come past 160m, just below 2MHz, 80m around 7MHz, etc, onto 2m around 145MHz, 70cm and up to WiFi at 2.4GHz, then 5.8GHz, eventually, you'll get to a frequency of around 400 THz, where you'll bump into visible light where the wavelength is 750nm. So, DC is 0Hz, Daylight is 400 THz, so from DC to Daylight means from 0 Hz to 400 THz. Said in another way, DC to Daylight means "all frequencies". Of course, you could point out that there are frequencies above daylight, indeed there are. It's really a short hand term and as amateur radio terms go, it's one of the more explanatory ones. Now all you need is a DC to Daylight radio, and you'll be able to listen to everything that goes on anywhere - provided you have an appropriately tuned antenna - Hi Hi. I'm sure there are terms you've come across that make no sense. Have a look around, or better still, contact another Amateur and work it out together. The only silly question is the one you didn't ask. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

The Binaural Banjo

Don't think I've done this before, but I went with a 1Hz binaural beat on this one after I saw somewhere that it is supposed to cause euphoria and endorphin release. Sounds good to me! After Tuesday I'm sure most of us here in the States will be ready for some endorphins. I'm ready now. This is also a long one - about 15 minutes. It may be too long to sustain such a simple arrangement and melody, but not for a lack of trying. I did the guitar and banjo parts and experimented with several counter melodies, harmonies, bridges, etc. but found that everything else just got in the way.So I ended up making the intro and outro longer, which was probably the best thing anyway.Includes embedded artwork, lossless version to be posted soon. Enjoy!Brothers

Combining experimental volcanology, petrology and geophysical monitoring techniques

In general, an understanding of the complex processes acting before and during volcanic eruptions is approached from various different sides, e.g. laboratory experiments on fragmentation and/or bubble burst eruption mechanisms, petrological analysis of the eruptive products and various geophysical monitoring and source localization techniques. Each of these techniques can deliver valuable insights by adding pieces of information about the physical processes that drive the volcanic activity. However, often studies are focussing on a single aspect of the process, without setting the results in a more general context. Often, this strategy is absolutely valid, when the focus is laid on a single piece in the complex chain of processes taking place in volcanic eruptions. This must fail when the results aim to suggest a valid model for the combined observations at volcanoes using the above described techniques. The resulting models of volcanic source mechanisms and eruptive features can therefore lead to biased assumptions. This study aims to close this gap between laboratory experiments, petro-chemical analysis and modern geophysical monitoring and source localization techniques in a case study of Mt. Yasur (Vanuatu) volcano. The presented laboratory experiments on explosive volcanic eruptions upon rapid decompression show that decompression rate is the dening parameter in the experiments and that a scaling to large-scale processes is valid. Furthermore, a model is presented that correlates measured particle velocities to decompression rate and initial gas-overpressure. This model is used to estimate source volumes and overpressures at Volcan de Colima (Mexico) and Mt. Yasur (Vanuatu). A petrographically and geochemically characterization of Mt. Yasurs eruptive products suggests a shallow magma-mingling process at both of Mt. Yasurs active craters, perhaps due to rejuvenation of material slumped from the crater walls into an open conduit system. A study on the time-reversal imaging technique and its ability to detect the details of finite rupture (or time-variant) processes shows that the limitations of TR imaging start where the source stops being point-localised with respect to the used wavelength. Inversion of the source mechanisms of Strombolian explosions at Mt. Yasur are performed using a multi-parameter dataset consisting of seismic, acoustic and Doppler-radar data. Time-reversal imaging and moment tensor inversion are used to invert the source location of the seismic long-period (f < 1Hz) signals, which is supposed to refl ect fluid movement at depth. The source is located in the north-east of the crater region in a depth of several hundred meters. Furthermore, the source volume of the radiated infrasound signals is estimated from fundamental resonance frequencies. The results showed that the maximum particle velocity measured with the Doppler radar correlates nicely with the estimated source volumes lengths. The inverted seismic moment does not show any correlation with the estimated slug sizes, i.e. the slug size does not map in seismic moment. This is an important information, as it states that a larger source volume does not necessarily produces a larger seismic moment. From these combined results, a common feeder system for all active craters at Mt. Yasur is proposed. The differences in event recurrence rate at the three active craters are believed to be controlled by either the conduit geometry or variations in degassing or cooling rate. Strombolian-type eruptions at Mt. Yasur are suggested to be due to the burst of gas slugs with lengths and overpressures comparable to volcanoes showing similar eruptive patterns. The results illustrate the importance of combined studies that overcome the limitations of single disciplines. In this way, a more comprehensive view of volcanic eruptions and the associated observations is possible. Such a multi-disciplinary approach will contribute to a better understanding of volcanic processes and the associated hazards.

Abstract: Working memory (WM) is an executive function that can improve with training. However, the precise mechanism for this improvement is not known. Studies have shown greater WM gains after a period of sleep than a similar period of wake (Kuriyama et al. 2008a; Zinke, Noack, and Born 2018), with WM improvement correlated with slow wave activity (SWA; 0.5-1Hz) during slow wave sleep (SWS) (Sattari et al. 2019; Pugin et al. 2015; Ferrarelli et al. 2019). A different body of literature has suggested an important role for autonomic activity during wake for WM (Hansen et al. 2004; Mosley, Laborde, and Kavanagh 2018). A recent study from our group reported that the temporal coupling of autonomic and central events (ACEs) during sleep was associated with memory consolidation (Naji et al. 2019). We found that heart rate bursts (HR bursts) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep are accompanied by increases in SWA and sigma (12-15Hz) power, as well as increases in the high-frequency (HF) component of the RR interval, reflecting vagal rebound. In addition, ACEs predict long-term, episodic memory improvement. Building on these previous results, we examined whether ACEs may also contribute to gains in WM. We tested 104 young adults in an operation span task (OSPAN) in the morning and evening, with either a nap (with electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG)) or wake between testing sessions. We identified HR bursts in the ECG and replicated the increases in SWA and sigma prior to peak of the HR burst, as well as vagal rebound after the peak. Furthermore, we showed sleep-dependent WM improvement, which was predicted by ACE activity. Using regression analyses, we discovered that significantly more variance in WM improvement could be explained with ACE variables than with overall sleep activity not time-locked with ECG. These results provide the first evidence that coordinated autonomic and central events play a significant role in sleep-related WM improvement and implicate the potential of autonomic interventions during sleep for cognitive enhancement.
